Many of the other entrants in the Open Challenge were seasoned Australian Stock Horse Society members who regularly compete at a National Level. Kira also won the Youth Judging competition for her age group and on her other mount, Woolerina Lego, won the Gordon Country Juvenile Campdraft.Another local rider to do well in the Open Challenge was Glenn Evans, who placed equal 3rd riding the stallion, Kirkbys Stud Credit, owned by Dan and Jenny Redgen of

Braeview Stud, Warwick.Local campdraft enthusiast Sam Campbell and the mare, The Braes Mudginberri Music, placed equal 2nd in the Novice Campdraft and took home the trophy bridle made by Branch member, Arthur Crumblin, for the highest placed Australian Stock Horse. Sam and wife Sarah, along with Sarah’s parents, Ian and Sue Gordon, are regular supporters and sponsors of local campdraft events, this year sponsoring both the Junior and Juvenile Campdrafts.Several ASH Branches in SE Qld run annual Futurities, but cattle are not always available for their events and the opportunity to work stock was greatly appreciated by all who attended, especially considering the lack of rainfall we’ve received over the past months. Looking Back…William Mitchner

William Mitchner was born possibly Wilhelm Maichsner in Lewin, Germany, on the 2nd August 1841. He came to Australia in about 1872 and was employed as engine driver in Francis Kates’ flour mill in Drayton Street in Allora. He left to go tin mining at Stanthorpe before returning to Allora to lease Francis Kates’ general store on the Drayton and Herbert Streets corner. He accumulated a great deal of wealth in his lifetime and at the time of his death on the 1st June 1918 his estate was valued at over £37,000 (about $3,000,000 in today’s values). Hubert Deacon, auctioneer and commission agent of Allora, and the Union Trustee Company were named as joint executors of his estate. William Mitchner had a reputation of being very tight fisted and hard to deal with. After his death in the Wilga Private Hospital in Toowoomba, the matron wrote to Hubert Deacon suggesting that the £13 petty cash left at the hospital be divided up amongst the nurses in view of the hard time that he had given them. Hubert was sympathetic to the request because he had done a great deal of unpaid work in helping draw up the will and administering Mitchner’s affairs while he was in hospital but the Union Trustee Company said that the money should be paid into the estate.William Mitchner left instructions that his body be embalmed but this was not carried out. If he died in Allora he was to be buried in the Allora cemetery but if he died elsewhere he was to be buried in Warwick. In his will he left his share holdings to the Toowoomba General Hospital and the Warwick Hospital. He left £1,500 to the Warwick cemetery for a shelter shed to be built in his memory and £800 to the Allora cemetery for the same purpose. He left £200 to be invested for 50 years and the interest to be divided between the Catholic Church and the Church of England in Warwick. £100 was left to the two churches in Allora on the same conditions.Mitchner’s will provided £750 for the

building of a stone or brick Church of England at Hendon. As this was not sufficient money for the purpose, and there was no call for a church at Hendon, the money was held in trust. In the 1990’s the money was finally released to be used for the maintenance of St. David’s Church in Allora. Hubert Deacon was left Mitchner’s fire-proof safe, kitchen table and use of his Allora house for twelve months. The balance of the estate (about £27,000) was left for charitable purpose in Mitchner’s home town of Lewin in Germany. This was to be administered by Ferdinand Tautz, parish priest and police magistrate in Lewin. Ferdinand Tautz, the illegitimate half brother of William Mitchner was to receive, with his wife and son, £600 personally.William Mitchner had rental properties in Allora, Warwick and Toowoomba and held nearly £13,000 in mortgages. One of the mortgages that he held was over the Railway Hotel at Hendon occupied by Mrs. Sarah Neylan. Daniel Neylan had died from the effects of excessive alcohol consumption in 1882 leaving her a widow at 33. Daniel’s will stated that she could not inherit the hotel if she remarried a Protestant, effectively holding it in trust until she died. “Widow” Neylan mortgaged the hotel to William Mitchner for nearly £1,000. In Hubert Deacon’s opinion he took advantage of her lack of business knowledge. Nearly every Friday he would return to Hendon on the train from inspecting his Warwick properties. He would have his evening meal at the hotel, stay overnight and return to Allora after breakfast. Mrs. Neylan did not pay monetary interest on the mortgage but anticipated being remembered in Mitchner’s will. When she found out that

she wasn’t she sent a bill to the executors for £390 being for 5/- a week board and lodgings for 30 years. The executors rejected the claim although Hubert Deacon thought that she had been badly treated.Probate of the will was granted on 2/8/1919 although appeals to the Queensland Supreme Court and the High Court of Australia over the validity of some of the bequests caused the executors to be still administering parts of the estate in 1928, ten years after William Mitchner’s death. Court and legal fees consumed a fair portion of the estate.,

Cemetery Shelter ShedThe Southern Downs Regional Council has engaged a heritage consultant to report on the ongoing maintenance requirements of the shelter shed at the Allora cemetery. Recently a delegation from the Allora and District Historical Society met with Ben Gall (Australia Heritage Specialist) and his assistant Gemma, Brian Weeks (Maintenance Overseer

S.D.R.C.) and S.D.R.C. staff member Carol Morris to outline their views on the significance of the building. The shelter shed was built with a bequest of £800 in the will of William Mitchner who died on the 1st June 1918. £150 of the money was to be invested by the Cemetery Trustees (then the Allora Shire Council) for the ongoing maintenance of the shed. The

building was to include a belfry and bell which was to be rung on the approach of funeral processions. In addition, a plaster bust of William Mitchner was to be installed with the sign “This shelter shed is the gift of William Mitchner, for the benefit of the Public. Born August 2nd 1841. Died 1st June 1918.”Because of the time of his death and his German background it was to be nearly 10 years and several cases before the Supreme Court before William Mitchner’s estate was finalised. At a poorly attended public meeting in February 1920 it was moved by William Burge that the money not be accepted to build the shelter shed. This

Apply now for The Hon David Littleproud MP Bursary to help rural women access tertiary education

most remote communities in the state – said many students were forced to move from their local community in order to pursue further study after finishing school.“Targeting education at students is a continual effort: identifying those with the motivation to study, tracking their progress and supporting their ambitions are all important factors,” he said.“This bursary is designed for a female first year, full-time student in a tertiary course, such as university, TAFE or the Conservatorium of Music. I believe it is important to support and nurture a variety of study fields.”To be eligible for the bursary, applicants must also be a constituent of the Maranoa electorate, although they may have relocated for their studies. They must also be an Australian citizen or

Permanent Resident of Australia.“We understand that moving out of your local community to pursue further study can be daunting and costly. That’s why I think this is such a great initiative by the NCWQ,” he said.“I hope to see many young people return to the bush and apply their skills in a range of different industries to grow our region. That’s why I’m committed to supporting our youth and giving them every opportunity possible.”Applications for The Hon. David Littleproud MP Bursary close Monday, June 4, 2018.Almost 30 bursaries are currently on offer for the 2018 NCWQ Bursary program. For more information on the NCWQ Bursary program and how to apply, check out:ncwq.org.au/bursaries-3

was seconded by Andrew Hamilton, Allora Shire Clerk, a son-in-law of William Burge and probably a cemetery trustee. W. J. T. Neale, chairman of the Allora Shire Council, said that he was against accepting the money in any shape or form. An amendment was passed that the executors of the will be approached to cover the costs of calling tenders and preparing plans and specifications, and that another public meeting be called at a later date.In October 1925 the Allora Shire Council as Cemetery Trustees called tenders for the building of the shelter shed. During WW2, probably due to anti-German sentiment, the

bust was twice maliciously removed, the second time it was not recovered. In 2004 the Allora and District Historical Society applied for a Queensland Government grant through the Regional Arts Development Fund to replace the bust. This was supported by the Warwick Shire Council. The new ceramic bust was created by Yvette Burge. To aid the planning of an ongoing maintenance program, the heritage consultant is calling for any old photos of the building to see if there have been any changes over the years. If you have any photos please contact any Historical Society member.

Continued from page 5… Dresses and models needed for FeteThe Allora-Clifton Anglican Parish is on the search for Wedding dresses and models as part of the upcoming Fete in October this year. The parade will showcase an historical collection of wedding dresses spanning from the 1930s to the current trends of today. The Fete is an annual event preceding Clifton’s Country Week, which is held yearly in October.Organised by the Allora- Clifton Anglican Parish, the Fete is alternated annually between the towns’ two Anglican churches. The event operates as a major fundraising tool for the church with the aims of engaging the community. In previous years the Fete has held face painting, raffles, stalls and live music for families across the region to enjoy.Wedding parade organiser Kerry Denne has urged people who are interested in not only the Fete but modelling and bridal gowns to get in touch.“At the moment we are looking for people that are interested in modelling wedding dresses

of many kinds,” Mrs Denne said.“We aren’t looking for people with specific modelling experience, so we encourage everyone interested to get in touch with us,” she said.Mrs Denne also said that the event remains a highlight on the Parish’s calendar.“Every year the Parish looks forward to the event and getting the community engaged,” she said. This year’s event will mark the first bridal parade conducted by the Anglican Parish.“I’m really looking forward to this one in particular because we’ve never done something like this before.”“The bridal parade will be a fantastic addition to an already spectacular event that the community can participate in,” Mrs Denne said. The Fete is set to commence on 12th October in Clifton later this year. For information about the event and modelling enquiries, contact Kerry Denne on 0401 368 636.

that overwhelmed the bottom of the ladder Southern Suburbs Tigers 70 - 14 at Toowoomba’s Glenholme Park on Saturday in breezy cool conditions. The Warriors also retained the prestigeous Ragh Family Trophy courtesy of the winning A & Reserve Grade results. The trophy was presented by former Wattles player and Toowoomba & Queensland Country representative David Ragh to Wattles captain Dale Perkins.Coach Travis Burns rested a number of his regular top graders including himself against the struggling Tigers.Tom Morris filled Burns number 6 jersey in admirable style, making his official A Grade debut after appear-ances in pre season trials.Another to make his debut outside trials was Jesse Miles, the son of Wattles 1997 premiership winning captain Steve ‘Skeeta’ Miles.Wattles first and reserve grade sides will enjoy a bye round this weekend, the premiership leading top graders can put their cue in the rack until June 17 when they run on at Toowoomba’s Herb Steinohrt Oval in the 2018 Madsen-Rassmussen Trophy final. The second on the ladder Garth Lonergan & Michael Crank coached reserve graders are also in calcula-tions for Toowoomba Rugby League Reserve Grade President’s Cup final on the same program, depending on fixture results from this coming weekend. Rated the best support player in the TRL by coach Burns, Ty Gardner posted first points in the match with a 7th minute try to have the Warriors leading 6 - 0.

Fellow forwards Dale Perkins and Jesse Miles followed suit with touchdowns to have the Warriors scoring at better than a point a minute, leading 18 - 0 after fourteeen minutes.Winger Isaac Waters scored to open the Tigers points account, and minutes later the home side added another try by hooker Angus Hearn to be back in the game trailling 10 - 18.Any hopes the Souths supporters harboured of a boil over eroded by halftime with Wattles adding tries by wingers Blake Lollback & Braydon Wilson and back-rower Nathan Gaulton to lead 36 - 10 at half time.Andrew Richardson scored on the end of a play of many hands in the opening minutes of the second half to ease the Warriors juggernaut in to motion for the second stanza.Quicksilver winger Braydon Wilson crossed for his tenth season try seven minutes later to add to the Warriors total, leading 46 - 10.Souths hooker Damian Mills snared a try in the 53rd minute, the last points the home side would add in the one sided game. When Nathan Gaulton was sin binned for striking three minutes from full time the Warriors were reduced to twelve, but the reduction had little affect on the outcome. Wattles added another three tries to their total with Richardson completing a hat trick himself when he cruised in to touch down in the final minute of the game.A clever tactictical play by coach Burns was to move former Queensland Under 18 front-rower Will O’Gradey to halfback for the last ten minutes of the match.Possibly the biggest Wattles halfback ever, the 187 cm tall & 115 kg O’Gradey, grand son of Allora’s Don & Michelle Crawford, was sharp at the

QBANK Launches 2018 Everyday Hero AwardsQueenslanders have a chance to recognise their local heroes with nominations now openb for the 2018 QBANK Everyday Heroes Awards. The awards, now in their fifth year, aim to honour Queensland’s frontline and public service workers, as well as youth aged 17 years and under, who have gone above and beyond to help their community. QBANK CEO Mike Currie said that he was looking forward to hearing the amazing stories of those across Queensland who have made a difference. “We have five adult categories as well as a Young Everyday Hero Award for those aged 12-17 years of age, and it is always tough to choose just six recipients who exemplify the qualities of an everyday hero,” Mr. Currie said. “Last year we saw nominations ranging from police officers who have shown astounding courage in difficult situations, through to teenagers who have demonstrated leadership and compassion by starting social sporting groups for children with disabilities in their community.“I am once again thrilled to hear these stories from across the state which make me proud to be a Queenslander, and to be part of an organisation that looks after Queensland’s everyday

heroes.”Seven highly respected judges from across the various sectors will select award recipients based on their proven track record of professional commitment and community dedication, com-monly through fundraising and charity work, supporting the vulnerable or disadvantaged, mentoring and leadership or spreading community aware-ness. Awards are presented in six categories including: Achieve-ment, Ownership, Dedication, Working Together, Excellence andthe Young Everyday Hero Award.Winners receive prize money of $1000, with a further $1000 donated to a charity of the award recipient’s choice. half time. The Tigers brought a smile to supporters faces when Darryl Hippi added a home side try five minutes after the break.Wattles went on shut out the game very convincingly scoring seven further tries as they coasted to victory.“We turned around of shortfalls in the second half” noted co-mentor Lonergan, “we stuck to our structure and improved our completion rate allowing us to stack on plenty of points.”Of Wattles 21 man line-up, eleven players crossed the strip for tries, co-coach & centre Lonergan nailing a hat trick and winning Player’s Player honours.Back-rower Alex Morris played his best game of the year, with his brother Jo Morris also shining in the result befor running on in A Grade. Duggan brothers Michael & Mark also impressed in there first game back from injury.Wattles 68 (Garth Lonergan 3, Dale McAntee, James Kedar, Nick Morris, Joe Morris, Jordan Henry, Harry Shooter, Matt Wiedman, Alex Morris, Michael Crank, Tyrone Jowett tries; Dale McAntee 7, Joe Morris goals).Souths 12 (Brandon Nothdurft, Darryl Hippi tries; Wayne Binge, Djarwyn Burns goals).Under 18 - While the Southern Suburbs Tigers senior grade teams have sadly struggled this season, the continuing existence of the 80 year old club a significant concern, their Under 18 combination are competition front-runners.The Tigers have eight wins from ten appearances this season to date, and are firmly perched on the third rung of the TRL Mark Phillipson Betta Electrical Premiership ladder.
