has for too long not been taken seriously. Lawrence Springborg MP proposed a toast to the RSL. He thanked the RSL Sub Branches of Allora, Clifton and Leyburn for hosting the luncheon to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the RSL in Australia and showcasing the RSL’s support of servicemen and women. In his speech, the President of RSL Queensland, Stewart Cameron encouraged members of the many RSL Sub Branches in attendance to take a resolution to the next RSL State Conference for their organisation to use their strength of numbers to change the culture of the defence department. He said that the Defence Department had to be persuaded to ‘open the door’ to step up and follow up on ex-service members.Jim Corby, President of RSL Allora Sub Branch acted as Master of Ceremonies. Jim thanked the members of Allora, Clifton and Leyburn for their assistance in arranging the luncheon. The success of the function was enhanced by the attention to detail by the organising committee under the leadership of Allora Sub Branch Treasurer, Kath Turner. The tables were set in black and white linen. Red poppies placed on grey serviettes added a touch of colour. Balloons in the colours of Invictus, black, grey and yellow added to the overall effect. Deeny Kohler-Caporale was in charge of the catering. She presented a tasty three course menu that was enjoyed by all. Deeny in her risqué style, along with Warwick jazz band provided musical entertainment during the afternoon.Traditional entertainment was provided by the Thistle and Heritage Highlands who with Colin Christelow on trumpet played “Sounds of Kuwait” a piping tribute to the forces of Iraq at the start of proceedings and “Minstrel Boy” an Irish Patriotic song which became a signature tune of WWI at the end of the day.Members of the RSL Warwick Sub Branch conducted the Missing Members Ceremony, a tradition carried out an official RSL functions. The Ode of Remembrance was recited followed by the Last Post, a minutes silence and the Reville played by Colin Christelow.Rev. Dennis Mooney, chaplain for the Allora RSL Sub Branch said Grace and Stacey Turner sang the National Anthem.(If you wish to view Sarah’s speech on Facebook, search for DiJo Mentoring. Letters to the Editor…Dear Editor,Australian parents are spending an estimated $67 million on cough and cold medicines that are known to be ineffective and in some cases potentially harmful. The Australian Child Health Poll found that a third of kids under six-years are being given cough and cold medicine even though they are not recommended for this age group. What’s particularly disturbing is that among parents who are giving these products to their young children, 74 per cent said they were told to do so on the advice of a pharmacist, and 64 per cent on the advice of a doctor.Parents of young children who are advised to use an over-the-counter cough or cold medicine should challenge the advice; if your child is under six years of age, don’t buy it.We also found that an estimated $74 million a year is being spent on vitamins and supplements even though there’s no proven health benefits for kids on a normal diet and with no nutritional deficiencies.Dr Anthea Rhodes,Director, Australian Child Health Poll

BAD JOKE OF THE WEEKMr. and Mrs. Brown had two sons. One was named "Mind Your Own Business" & the other was named

"Trouble".

One day the two boys decided to play hide and seek. Trouble hid while Mind Your Own Business counted to one hundred. Mind Your Own Business began looking

for his brother behind garbage cans and bushes.

Then he started looking in and under cars until a police man approached him and asked, "What are you doing?"

"Playing a game," the boy replied.

"What is your name?" the officer questioned.

"Mind Your Own Business."

Furious the policeman inquired, "Are you looking for trouble?!"

The boy replied, "Why, yes."

TWO EXHIBITIONS RICH IN STORIES AND TECHNIQUEWarwick Art Gallery is pleased to present two exhibitions that are rich in content and technique and that also happen to be the work of seven talented local artists. Got Mittens Too and Confluence will be officially opening on Friday 16 September and will be on display until late October.Got Mittens Too is Peter Osborn’s first solo exhibition at Warwick Art Gallery. Peter has a background in structural engineering design and has studied visual arts at the University of Southern Queensland. His works include ceramic figurative sculpture and watercolour illustration. The 100 year commemoration of the Anzac involvement in World War 1 became a personal journey when he read the diary his grandfather wrote while on service at the Western Front. This brief document provided many poignant images of the conflict and devastating loss of life. “I became interested in my grandfather's WW1 experiences after my uncle sent me a scanned copy of his diary from that time,” said Peter, “ He arrived in France in mid 1916 as a sapper with the 13th brigade of the 4th Division AIF and somehow survived, particularly the third battle of Ypres where his younger brother was killed.

The title of the exhibit Got Mittens Too comes from an anecdote related by my grandfather when, after the German soldiers raised a banner proclaiming “Gott mit uns” (God is with us), the Allies responded with a banner “Got mittens too”

In addition to the exhibition Peter has designed a catalogue book featuring excerpts from the diary, text and images from the exhibitions. The book is available from the Gallery during the exhibition.Confluence is a collaborative textile landscape that was conceived during a workshop at Jumpers and Jazz in July in 2015 facilitated by textile artist, Dorothy Haig. Participating artists experimented with a variety of individual methods of printmaking based on traditional techniques, while exploring the broad concept of resilience. The six artists, all based on the Southern Downs except for Dorothy Haig who has recently moved to Maleny, have created beautiful printed works on fabric that together take a timely look, on many levels, at the resilience of Outback Australia.Got Mittens Too and Confluence will be on display from TODAY, Thursday 15 September until Sunday 28 October, 2016. You can the artists at the official opening on Friday 16 September at 6.30pm. This is a free event and anyone is welcome but please rsvp to the gallery on 07 46610434.

Letter from the FrontMr. John Warfield of Hendon received a telegram from Base Records, as follows:- “Now reported your son, Private Harry

Warfield, admitted Fourth Northern General Hospital with gunshot wound to leg, severe”. We hope very sincerely that the news next coming to hand will be of the best. By a recent mail Mr. Warfield was in receipt of a very cheery letter from his son, Harry, who it appears had been appointed honorary secretary to the brothers (four, including himself). He has several times tried to resign his position, being of the opinion that other members of the firm should undertake the burden of correspondence occasionally, but up to the time of writing they had firmly declined to accept his resignation. However, he fulfils the duties admirably, and his last letter is full of interesting items. He mentions having come across another old Talgai lad, Dick Martin, and had also seen Charlie Sanderson several times. From every point of view he compares France very favourably to Egypt, of which he entertains no pleasant recollections.(Harry Warfield was returned to Australia in 1917 as were his brothers Herbert and Sid at the end of the war. Sergeant John Warfield was killed in action in France in 1918).

Think FAST this Stroke WeekA staggering fifty percent of Australians don’t know the signs of stroke, putting them at serious risk of disability or even death. With National Stroke Week having kicked off this Monday, the Stroke Foundation is urging Queenslanders to think FAST and learn the signs of stroke before it’s too late.

Stroke Foundation Queensland Executive Officer Libby Dunstan said Stroke Week was about educating the community that speed saves when it comes to stroke.“There will be more than 9,400 strokes in Queensland this year and sadly many people miss out on accessing life-saving treatment as they don’t get to hospital on time,” Ms Dunstan said.“We want the community to be aware that stroke is always a medical emergency. When you have a stroke, your brain cells start to die at a rate of almost two million per minute.“Being aware of the signs of stroke and knowing to call 000 as soon as it strikes is crucial in the fight against this terrible disease.“We need all Queenslanders to get involved by helping us spread this important message this Stroke Week,” she said.Throughout this week more than 2500 activities are expected to be held around the country. Activities range from awareness morning teas, displays and talks, and health checks.

Throughout the week, all Queensland locals are encouraged to:• Organise an awareness activity• Fundraise for the Stroke Foundation• Host a health checkMs Dunstan said research has shown the stakes are high and that even a fifteen minute delay in accessing treatment can rob stroke survivors of a month of healthy life.“With the community’s support we want to send a vital message to all Queenslanders this Stroke Week: act FAST if you think you or a loved one is having a stroke,’’ Ms Dunstan said.“Too many locals are unaware that a speedy reaction to stroke could mean the difference between life and death.“Stroke doesn’t have to be a death sentence, it is treatable but people need to know the signs of stroke and get to hospital fast.“This Stroke Week we are encouraging community members to get involved and help us spread this life-saving message.“It is all about bringing people together to have fun, while raising awareness of stroke.”Think FAST this National Stroke Week and raise awareness of stroke. Find out more at www.strokefoundation.com.au.National Stroke Week runs from September 12 to 18. It is an annual event which aims to raise the awareness of stroke within the community and encourage Australians to take action to prevent stroke.

Allora Pony Club NotesAt the recent Cambooya Gymkhana our young Allora riders acquitted themselves very well for a small team, right from the march-past onward. The little contingent of three consisted of - Shelby Turk, Amy Morris and Sarah Moŕris.Shelby handled herself and her smart pony in a very competent manner and was placed among the trophy winners in her class.Amy and Sarah rode in the beginners lead-in events as it was only their second attendance at gymkhanas. However, they both showed such improvement that they completed some if their events off-rein; they were very pleased with their ponies' performance.Perhaps we'll be seeing a lot more of these youngsters making up a proud Allora team of the future.

Council appoints new Advisory Committee membersAt a special meeting held last week, Southern Downs Regional Council has appointed a number of community representatives to its eight Council Advisory Committees.Council called for expressions of interest in August from persons, including those aged 25 years or less, to become community representatives on the Advisory Committees following the adoption of a new Advisory Committee Policy and Terms of Reference for the eight committees.Southern Downs Mayor Tracy Dobie said Council was heartened by the overwhelming number of expressions of interest received from community members across the region.“There was a terrific response from the community to the expressions of interest process.“I think this is testament to the interest and enthusiasm in the community to engage with Council on matters of importance to them, and to bring their experience and knowledge to the table.“Council sees the Advisory Committees, and their members, as crucial cogs in the wheels of our local government,” she said. The role of the Advisory Committees is to provide strategic rather than operational advice to Council, and the advice should be in relation to the entire region. Advice provided through Advisory Committees will be reported back to Council through the Minutes of each committee. The Mayor added that each of the Advisory Committees will revisit their Terms of Reference at their inaugural meeting and work towards creating a vibrant vision and strategy for each of the areas they manage.“Advisory Committee members will be asked to think of the future and the important role Council can play in meeting the needs of new communities, as well as planning for critical infrastructure.“I would like to thank sincerely, all those community members who took the time to submit their interest, and on behalf of

Council, may I congratulate those that have been appointed,” she said. The Advisory Committee Community Representatives appointed by Council are:

Allora Sports Club – Night Bowls Results – Week TwoEver watched a bowler after they deliver, their body moves either left or right to match the bias of their bowl. Well that is the way with most bowlers, but look around the Allora bowling green and you see arm flapping, jumping up and down and a new movement – twerking. New bowler Alana gave us an excellent example.Great to see new team Maydan (Rusty, Alana and Bryce), putting down some great shots. Skip, Rusty had us calling in the experts to adjudicate on two occasions. One end was ruled a non-event after Rusty’s bowl and the jack end up out of play, although we did concede that he had a toucher. He other winning ‘smash’ won his team 5 points! Results of play – Honda Hawks 12 v Zoolanders 11; Lawn Grubs 13 v Roonicks 11; The Three Amigos 21 v Team Engel 3; The Old Boys 13 v Doesn’t Matter 9; Frog and Swallow 17 v Riches Rat Bags 8; The Men’s Shed 9 v Maydan 7; Railway Hotel 14 v Swimming Pool 13This week Rink 1 was the lucky rink. Honda Hawks won the winner’s prize and Zoolanders were runners-up. Six Packs all round.Lucky raffle prize winners were Dennis Allen, Beetle, SLUG, Barry Donegan. Rusty, Ashleigh and John Cochran had a chance to cut the cards. No luck there and the Jackpot next week is $60.00. Lucky toucher winners were Tom Bazley, Aaron Simpson, Tim Hentschell, John Cochran, Russel Mc. M and Paul Parker.Thank you to sponsors Allora Sports Club, Railway Hotel, Swimming Pool, True Value Hardware, Frog and Swallow, Paul Parker, Painter and I.G.A.
