Check your water meterWater rates notices are landing in letter boxes across the Southern Downs from this week and Council is urging residents to check their water meter if they believe there is a discrepancy.CEO Rod Ferguson said that people often question their water rates bill, and the first step before calling Council should be to check the reading on your water meter is close to that on your statement.“It won’t be exactly the same as some days have passed since the meters were read, but it should be proportionally greater,” Mr Ferguson said. Instructions on how to read your water meter are in the water conservation measures pamphlet enclosed with your water rates notice.It is also recommended that residents perform an overnight leakage test to check for any leakage at pipes and taps.Instructions for overnight leakage test - If you read your water meter last thing at night and then first thing in the morning you can calculate how much water is being lost through leakage.For this to be accurate, you must not use any water during the night. Subtract the previous night’s reading from the morning reading. This gives the volume of water ‘lost’ overnight. If you lose more than one litre per hour, you should check for dripping taps, faulty toilet cisterns or other forms of leakage.Any more than 10 litres lost per hour is very significant and should definitely be investigated.If the these checks reveal a possible discrepancy in the Water Rates Notice issued to you, residents can contact Council on 07 4661 0300 or 07 4681 5500.

BAD JOKE OF THE WEEKA young man was walking through a supermarket

to pick up a few things when he noticed an old lady following him around. Thinking nothing of it, he

ignored her and continued on. Finally he went to the checkout line, but she got in front of him.

“Pardon me,” she said, “I’m sorry if my staring at you has made you feel uncomfortable. It’s just that you look just like my son, who I haven’t seen in a long

time.”

“That’s a shame,” replied the young man, “is there anything I can do for you?”

“Yes,” she said, “as I’m leaving, can you say ‘Good bye, Mother!’ It would make me feel so much better.”

“Sure,” answered the young man. As the old woman was leaving, he called out, “Good bye, Mother!”

As he stepped up to the checkout counter, he saw that his total was $127.50. “How can that be?” he

asked, “I only purchased a few things!”

“Your mother said that you would pay for her,” said the clerk.

“Anne’s Got the Kettle On for Cancer”There’s nothing like a “cuppa” between friends at any time for a chat and catch up, but when the iconic Aussie tradition also serves to raise money to benefit such a vital organisation as the Cancer Council of Australia, it takes on a whole different meaning. Well known Allora identity Anne Lawson has been hosting “cuppas” at her home as part of the Cancer Council of Australia fundraiser, “Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea” for the past twelve years. Anne has the “kettle boiling” for another successful event to be hosted at her back yard at 5 Jubb Street from 10 am on Thursday May 26th.After Anne, her husband Robert and their family dealt with the pain and suffering associated with son Denis’ diagnosis with Ewings Sarcoma in 1999, and the subsequent three year battle Denis fought before losing his life, Anne was motivated to do something to support cancer research. She had considered the “Shave for a Cure” fundraiser, before settling on an annual morning tea under the banner of “Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea”. Anne Lawson’s Biggest Morning Tea is now firmly entrenched in Allora’s community calendar, and a regular contributor to the charity at the forefront of the battle against

During the month of May, more than a million people nationwide will sip their way through morning teas at work, school, home and in the community. Anne is expecting a similar turn out in the relaxing surrounds of her garden, “we can expect a number between 25 & 50” she suggests confidently.The morning tea will also feature a multi draw raffle open to all, event raffle where winners must be in attendance and lucky door prizes. Anne & Robert are familiar faces selling tickets in aid of cancer research throughout the community, and encourage everyone to catch up with them at the Allora Foodworks this Saturday or Warwick’s Rose City Centre escalator on Wednesday, May 25th, to secure $2 multi draw tickets. Birds of a FeatherThe Allora Showgrounds will play host to “poultry in motion” this Sunday, when the Southern Downs Poultry Club hosts their 2011 “Young Bird Show”.Poultry Club spokesman Rebecca Gallaway said the annual event was looking to be at least as big as recent years, with over a hundred entries expected in what has evolved into a popular exhibition of fowl & water fowl in the region. The “Young Bird Show” will bring poultry enthusiasts from as far away as Brisbane, northern New South Wales & Kingaroy to compete against many local exhibitors from across the Southern Downs.The competition will be of a high standard with award winning exhibitors including Warwick’s Warren Schelbach having birds on display. “Poultry sections will include soft feather bantam, hard feather bantam, large hard feather, large soft feather, pullet & water fowl” Show Chief Steward Ms Gallaway advised, “with the top award being the ‘Bird of the Show’”. While those showing the poultry will in the majority of cases be experienced exhibitors, novice poultry breeders and community members with an interest are more than welcome to attend and get an “education”, especially with breeds such as Langshans, Silkies, Sussex, Wyandottes, , Game, Old English Game & the rare Malays all on display. Warwick VIC to report to local tourism organisationThe Warwick Visitor Information Centre (VIC) will now be managed by the local tourism organisation (LTO) Warwick Tourism & Events (WTE) under CEO Tracy Vellacott.The handover, set to happen by end August this year, was passed in Southern Downs Regional Council’s April General Meeting on Wednesday 27 April, after a report by the Tourism Transition Group at the previous week’s Community Services committee meeting.Previously the VIC was managed by the regional tourism organisation (RTO), the Southern Downs & Granite Belt Tourism Association (SDGBTA).The VIC will remain in its current location, with WTE and SDGBTA exchanging offices.“This change has been driven by Council and its desire to manage tourism expenditure,” said WTE chair, Greg Newey.“We see the VIC as a very effectively run organisation with great staff and volunteers,” Mr Newey said. “We have no intention of making any changes, and will look to provide a supportive role, whilst concentrating on our existing charter as an event organising group.”“We think it will be useful to have a more direct link between WTE and the VIC.”Chair of SDGBTA, Margaret Cairn, said it was a good move for all concerned.“The Warwick VIC is specifically for Warwick operators and people visiting Warwick so it makes sense for that to be managed by the local tourism body instead of a region wide body.”Chairman of the Tourism Transition Group Cr Vic Pennisi said he was happy to see the progress being made, and the positive way that all stake holders have approached the process.“Given the complexities of tourism I see this transition as a positive step forward in achieving Council’s preferred model,” Cr Pennisi said.“Whilst Council is focussed on the direction it wishes to take, it acknowledges that without the goodwill of the stakeholders involved, the task would be less than enviable.”

The Allora Central Picture Theatre has changed hands and considerable improvements have been carried out. (The Central Theatre was built by Joseph Sharpe in 1916 and from 1919 it was leased to the Star Picture Company which comprised six local identities including Joe Sharpe, Hubert Deacon and Harry Reppel. Following the deaths of Joe Sharpe in 1919 and Mrs. Grace Sharpe in 1934, the theatre was in the hands of Miss Beryl Sharpe when it was sold to Mr. A. C. Cameron in 1936)

Allora’s Past 100 years ago May 1911Progress at Goomburra

On Thursday night last, the Rev. S. Baggaley accompanied by Messrs. H. G. Deacon and A. L. H. Cooke (churchwardens) visited Goomburra to discuss with the people there, the practicability of erecting a new church building instead of repairing the old church. Mr. Deacon made a full explanation of the circumstances and a discussion culminated in Mr. J. E. Nussey moving that it is advisable to build a new church at Goomburra instead of making repairs to the old building. Messrs. S. E. Wright and M. Maker spoke in favour of the proposal and the motion was carried unanimously.

Attempted Train SabotageThe railways authorities have been advised that an attempt was made to sabotage the train on the Allora branch line yesterday. The Hendon Station Master reported that several large stones had been placed on the line near Kates’ Siding. The 1.30 train from Allora, as usual, had the tender in front of the engine, nevertheless Driver Tom Robinson noticed the obstructions, which had they not been seen, were quite large enough to derail the train. The driver deserves credit for his foresight especially when taken into consideration that the tender was placed first.Local police upon investigation discovered that a couple of children had placed a number of stones on the line and have been warned against repeating the offence. Owing to their tender age they apparently did not realize the severe consequences of their actions.

Haig Avenue closed to general trafficSouthern Downs Regional Council advises that Haig Avenue, Warwick, which provides access to the underground car park for Rose City Shopping Centre off Fitzroy Street, has been closed to general public access due to stability concerns about a nearby building.Community members reported possible movement in the sandstone wall of the property at 84 Fitzroy Street on 21st April, with Council immediately closing the Avenue pending an engineering inspection.An independent engineering report has since certified that the wall is sufficiently stable to allow for “very infrequent” single vehicle truck deliveries to the Shopping Centre to continue for the next two weeks.A further investigation of the structural integrity of the wall will continue, with a view to installing a stabilising structure.Haig Avenue is closed to general public access until further notice.

Correctly position your sat-nav or risk fines The state's peak motoring body is warning motorists to ensure their satellite navigation device is properly positioned before heading out on the roads, or risk being fined. RACQ Technical Researcher Russell Manning said it was against the law to position sat-nav devices in places that obstructed driver vision. “The most common type of sat-nav at the moment is the ‘hang on’ aftermarket device, many of which attach to the windscreen with a suction cup,” he said. “It’s amazing how many people stick them in the centre of the windscreen, with no thought given to the effect they have on the driver’s view of the road and potential traffic hazards. “If you’re fitting a sat-nav unit to the windscreen, it shouldn’t be placed directly in front of the driver, but instead should be placed at the lower right corner of the windscreen to minimise driver obstruction.” Queensland regulations state that these items must not be mounted in such a way as to block a driver’s vision of the road. Mr Manning said police could fine motorists for having sat-nav units that obstructed the driver’s field of view. “It’s also important to ensure the sat-nav units are not in places where they may cause injury in a crash. This includes potential head strike zones or on the windscreen or other places where a deploying airbag may contact them. “Avoid placing it on the left side of the windscreen if a passenger airbag is fitted, as the screen is usually used to deflect the deploying airbag into its correct position,” he said. Mr Manning said motorists should be aware of the dangers of using the device while on the road. “It’s just like a mobile phone. Bundaberg Retain Division League TitleBundaberg dominated the 2011 Holcim 47th Battalion Trophy Championships on their home turf at Salter Oval over the past weekend, emerging as undefeated Champions and retaining the title won last year.In the second year of the 47th Battalion Trophy Championships, district teams from across the Central Division, formed in late 2009, gathered to battle for Divisional supremacy, and for selection in the Central Division side to contest the QRL State Open Championships on the Gold Coast in June.The Toowoomba Clydesdales side, that included Wattles utility player Luke Baker, showed they were a force to be reckoned with on the first day of competition accounting for Gladstone 28 – 6, and Burnett 24 – 16. The Clydesdales finished Day 1 ahead in their group, which included Sunshine Coast, Burnett & Gladstone; while Bundaberg emerged leading group 1 ahead of Rockhampton, Central Highlands and Border League.The Toowoomba combination buckled on Sunday morning to Sunshine Coast 12 – 16, but had done enough to snatch a semi-final start against the host centre. The tough encounter against Sunshine Coast took its toll on the Clydesdales, and they struggled to gain a foothold against a Bundaberg side that improved as the carnival progressed. Bowls Club NotesThis Saturday, 7th May there is a golf/bowls day as per Sports Club notes. All bowlers, members and

The Penrith Panthers five-eight, who is enjoying a purple patch of form currently despite his club’s wayward season, has been somewhat of a journeyman on his way to reaching his NRL century.After debuting as a 17 year old in A Grade for Wattles against the Warwick Cowboys at Father Ranger Oval in August 2001, Burns headed for Brisbane for the 2002 season with Eastern Suburbs Tigers. The Tigers being a feeder club for the Cronulla Sharks, the talented back got the call to go to Sydney the following year. He spent two seasons with the Sharks, a highlight being an appearance in the 2004 NSWRL Jersey Flegg (Under 20) Grand Final. His Cronulla side was devastated when opposition five-eight Jamie Soward kicked a field goal in extra time for the Sydney City Roosters to win the match 14 – 13. Soward went on to be part of St. George-Illawarra’s NRL Grand Final winning side last year.Burns impressed Manly Sea-Eagles Coach Des Hasler and spent three seasons from 2005 with the northern beach club, debuting in the NRL in his initial season with Manly against Penrith on July 9th, before going on to play in forty first grade

games with the club. Injury and some suspensions interfered with Burns’ two year stint with the North Queensland Cowboys, where he turned out in 32 matches, before heading back south to link with Penrith for the start of the 2010 season. His appearance in last weekend’s 18 – 26 loss to the New Zealand Warriors was his 28th match in a Panthers jersey, and 100th in the NRL.The Texas born Burn’s did not reach his landmark achievement on Australian soil however, running on instead to Auckland’s Mt. Smart Stadium, where team mate and Penrith fullback Michael Gordon also racked up 100 NRL games.Premiership success still eludes Travis Burns at the game’s elite levels, last celebrating finishing as a member of a season Champion side, with the Inglewood/Millmerran Under 13’s of 1997. The former Darling Downs Schoolboys under 11 Captain played his junior rugby league with Inglewood/Texas and Inglewood/Millmerran when the two clubs combined, before lining up with Wattles juniors as a 13 year old. He was an outstanding representative footballer, with both the Warwick & District JRL and the South West “Mustangs” junior sides. He went on the play 31 games in Wattles senior grades (Under 17 & 18) in the 2000/01 seasons, winning the Vince Bermingham Memorial Trophy as Wattles Best & Fairest Under 18 in 2001, also gaining selection in the Toowoomba Clydesdales and

South West Division Mustangs Under 17 teams that year.Wattles supporters along with the Texas rugby league fraternity were hopping for a Panthers win on Sunday to celebrate the century of matches, Travis also joining the ranks of Shane Webcke and Kirk Reynoldson as former Wattles players to go on and play 100 NRL matches.

score of 55 was Jim Muir. The runner up with a 60 was Kel Strange. Pin shots went to Kel Strange on the 3rd & 13th, Adam May the 12th. On the 7th it was Jim Muir and the 16th Adam May. Congratulations to Elizabeth Muir who beat all the boys to be closest on the 4th hole.This month there will be a change for the Monthly Medal due to the Zone 3 carnival being held on 15th May at Goombungee. The monthly medal will now be held the following week 22nd May.Thanks again goes out to the guys maintaining the course – well done.

Match reports for Round 3, 30.4.2011, Wattles V SuburbsFlynn Electrical U7’s: The boys put in another great effort against Suburbs on Saturday, after getting off to a slow start. Ruben Sullivan, Darcy Minninkin, Lachlan Peardon and Liam Ruhle all made some great try- saving tackles. Backing-up was a highlight of the game this week, and the boys were able to string together 12 passes before the tackle was completed in one play. Liam Ruhle, Michael Shingles, Andrew Willet, Rubin Sullivan and Lane Eastwell all scored tries this week, with Liam kicking one goal. Jed Esson, Lachlan Quirk and William Ranger were all on hand to assist in plenty of tackles.Clifton Foodworks Award: Liam Ruhle.Red Rooster Award: Ruben Sullivan.Wattlebrae Stud U8’s: A great game by U8’s this week with the team getting better and better as the game progressed. Great defensive work shown by Jon Nolan complimented the blistering speed of Mikey Duncan and Jacob Meddleton. Strong running from Jackson Pogany, Ben Willet and Thomas Darcy was another feature of this game. Lachy Meacle showed his worth as a classy dummy half scooting over in the second half for a try. This week Ryley Lever was used to great effect as an impact player in the second half. Sam Scott, Harry McMahon and Elija Hall once again put some much needed steel into the U8’s. Tries were scored by Jacob Meddleton (2), Lachlan Meacle, Michael Duncan and Jackson Pogany (2), with one goal each to Jacob, Michael and Jackson.Clifton Foodworks Award: Jon NolanRed Rooster Award: Jacob MeddletonSuperior Silage U10’s: The U 10’s proved to be a formidable opponent for the Hornets this week, running in 4 converted tries to take the 2 points with a 24-12 win in Warwick. Will Flynn had a great game in both attack and defence, earning himself the Clifton Foodworks Award, and Ty Norris received the Red Rooster Award for running the ball up with great determination. The team showed some great ball skill, with plenty (for the most part) of controlled passing, and everyone shared the load in defence. Matt Christensen showed twice how to run straight and hard from 20 metres out and was rewarded with tries on both occasions. Tries were scored by Tyler Gillam, Matthew Christensen and Nathan Gibson, converted by Regan Eastwell, Tyler Gillam, Juston Free and Matthew Christensen.Clifton Auto Ag Repairs U11’s: Wattles U11’s certainly showed Suburbs a very clean pair of heels this weekend in a

game which saw the Warriors run in 14 tries and work very well defensively to keep the young Hornets scoreless. Nick Brown and Lachlan Henry worked good in the halves, and Darcy Brady, Lachlan, Brad Newman and Dylan Hounslow-Cullen demonstrated some brilliant broken field play, all scoring tries for their efforts. Some good support play was shown by the team with the forwards working very well making good ground for the backs, and this is an area the coach feels can be improved on further in the weeks to come, making the U11 Warriors a force to be reckoned with. Try scorers for the U11’s were: Dylan H-C (4), Darcy Brady (2), Hayden Smith, Lachlan Henry (2), Nick Brown, Chris O’Neill (2), Bradley Newman and Jacob Blades, with conversions by Dylan, Darcy, Lachlan, Nick, Mitch Potter, Jacob Willet and Chris. Full time score 78-0. Best tacklers: Jacob Blades, Nick Brown and Chris O’Neill.Clifton Foodworks Award: Chris O’NeillRed Rooster Award: Mitch Potter.Superior Silage U13’s: Wattles were defeated 20-18 by Suburbs in this tightly contested match. The side showed that when they control the ball and complete their sets they can score points, but they will need to work harder in defence if they are to be a force this year. James Moore played well at prop taking the hard runs up the middle and was strong in defence. Paul Christensen and Robert Bradfield did some good work down the edge of the field, while Joe Willet did some great defensive work, scoring a try by diving over from Dummy half. Matt Timbs ran strongly and was rewarded three tries. Paul Christensen kicked one goal to round out Wattles score. Liam Duncan showed skill in his first game back this year. The team is still adjusting to international rules and playing a different style of game, and tighter discipline and improved defence will only strengthen their game. Best players this week: James Moore, Paul Christensen and Robert Bradfield.Allora Foodworks Award: James Moore.Clifton Real Estate U14’s: In a see-sawing, entertaining game of football, the U14 Wattles succumbed to a 24-32 defeat against the Suburbs Hornets. Dalton Nielsen was very strong in both defence and attack. Max Somes ran strongly and was always hard to stop. Lack of effort and concentration at key times was the difference between winning and losing in this match. Once again the team relied on the support of the U13 players who stepped up to boost their numbers, with Matt Timbs performing very well in the older age group, scoring his fourth try of the day for the U14’s. Joe Morris, Matt Timbs and Max Somes (2) were try scorers for the U14’s, with Will Bashford kicking four from four goals.Allora Foodworks Award: Dalton NeilsenCarlowrie Park U16’s: The U16’s were unlucky not to come away from this match with a few more points on the board, after trying gallantly against the Suburbs Hornets. A few unsuccessful tries in the first half saw the Warriors working hard in defence to keep the Hornets at bay- Nick Pails led the tackle count at 19, with Nick Morris, Tim Sharpe, Justin Newman, Thomas Henry and Jimmy Willet all achieving double-figures in tackling. First points on the board came from a great try by Dale McAntee after a change in direction from play of the ball by Thomas Henry. The Warriors looked set to make a comeback in the second half of the game when Brodie Frizzell caught an intercept to run in his first try under the posts, and Dale McAntee stepped up and showed signs of his old form. The team showed promise in their ability to regain the ball from the kick-off, and some solid goal-line defence at times. Ben Comerford took a great high ball from a Suburbs bomb, and Justin Newman’s “never say die” determination and great cover defence is inspirational. Matt Willet played well until he was injured, and we wish him a speedy recovery. The full time score of 16-36 shows that there is still room for improvement in defence and enthusiasm, and all players need to dig deep and stay in the game and they will reap the rewards.Foodworks Awards this week go to: Nick Pails, Carl Christensen, Jim Willett and Nick Morris.Red Rooster Award: Brodie Frizzell.
