Letters to the Editor…To the Editor,A few "thank yous" need to be said. Firstly to Penny McKinlay of Gardens of the Downs for supporting and encouraging us to be part of the Allora Autumn Festival. Each garden and their owners proved that by offering a diverse range of gardens there was something to please everyone. One question asked during the weekend, who kept the money raised? All money went back to Gardens on the Downs to pay insurance and distributed evenly back to garden owners. Plus every one had the opertunity to make a donation to a charity of their choice. At least three local charities will benefit from the weekend. Also a big thank you to Christine Gleeson and her band of eager helpers. Overall a very successful weekend. All feedback has been positive.Rod & Lynn Close,Roseneath Cottage

T Model AdventureMr. G. Whatmore (manager of Queensland Motor Agency Ltd) driving a Model T Ford, set out from Brisbane on Friday on a three day trip to Wilson’s Downfall, N.S.W., via Toowoomba, Allora, Warwick and Stanthorpe. On Sunday he set out from Stanthorpe at midday for the return journey via Warwick, Maryvale and Spicer’s Gap. On reaching the Range, the track was no more than a surface indication obscured by grass 4 to 5 feet high. Much valuable time was spent in finding the trail and the base of the range was not reached until 6 p.m. when darkness had set in. The road would be hard to negotiate in daylight but at night it

was dangerous with deep water courses and fallen timber. The summit was reached at 9 p.m. and the descent on the Boonah side was even more dangerous with washouts, boulders and fallen timber. The car was allowed to skid down the mountain with the brakes locked, until plunging headlong into a large watercourse 5 to 6 feet deep and coming to rest vertically on its front wheels. With the aid of levers cut from young saplings and after three hours labour, the car was gradually lifted onto the road and found to be not the slightest bit damaged. The motorists continued the journey at a good pace by the light of the full moon, travelling via Marburg and Ipswich, reaching Brisbane at 3 a.m. (15 hours after leaving Stanthorpe). They claim that this is the only time that the Gap has been crossed by a motor car after dark.

RailwayThe Legislature has finally authorised the extension of the railway from Toowoomba to Warwick. The first section is now in progress and the works are being fairly executed. The bridges at Spring Creek, Emu Creek and Dalrymple Creek are in the course of erection and the timber has been laid down at the sites of most bridges between Toowoomba and Allora, the termination of the first section. The earth works and the delivery of ballast and sleepers also proceeds satisfactorily.

'Rattle of the Brains' Trivia NightThe Annual St Patrick's 'Rattle of the Brains' Trivia Night was hotly contested last Friday night at the Allora Community Hall. A large crowd gathered to test their knowledge on an array of topics, and in the end only one point separated the top 4 teams!! The winning team scored 69 points, while there was a 3 way tie for second place on 68 points! As well as the trivia questions which were read out by well known local Glyn Rees, there was a huge multi draw raffle and a lively auction called by local rodeo identity Scott Keogh. The crowd was well fed with nibblies, pizza and supper, all served by St Patrick's year 6 students, and an enjoyable evening was had by all!The night would not have been a success without the generous financial support and donations from our local and regional sponsors. The St Patrick's school P&F sincerely appreciate this generosity and would like to extend special thanks to our sponsors: Black Toyota, Warwick Daily News, Darling Downs Tarpaulins, Munro Law, Gordon Country, Pacific Seeds, Headstart Australia Child Care Centre, Allora Pharmacy, Wilson & Rigby Allora Paint & Panel, Allora Post Office, Railway Hotel, Commercial Hotel, Vanderfield, Dupont Pioneer, Michael Maher Sand & Gravel, Dwan Drilling And Water Services, Olsens Produce, BNW Accountants, West Talgai Grazing, David Gengos Accountants, Allora Grain & Milling, Naturalite Studio, Allora Butchery, Jenco

Yes!!! Matthew Qualifies for OlympicsAllora should have its first ever Olympic representative when competition begins at the Rio de Janeiro Olympics in August. Local man, Matthew Denny threw an Olympic qualifier of 65.37m in discus at a competition in California on the weekend. This is Matthew's second trip to the United States since March in his quest to throw an Olympic qualifier. On his first trip, he threw a best of 64.73m which was tantalisingly close to the qualifying distance of 65m. He returned home to re-group and travelled back to the U.S. last Wednesday, this time accompanied by Grahame Pitt, his Toowoomba-based coach.Grahame made a jubilant phone call to Matthew's family in Allora on Sunday morning and there was much excitement when parents, John and Karen and grandmother, Pat Goldsmith and the extended family received the news. His father, John, said that they were thrilled that Matthew's determination had paid off: "We are so proud that he never gave up. Matthew has had to be focussed and make many sacrifices to achieve this level in his sport. He talked to the Australian head coach after the competition and he has been congratulated by Queensland and Australian Athletics on social media."Matthew will return to Allora this week. He will be celebrating his 20 birthday on Thursday.

Southern Downs on track with pitch for Games pre-event trainingSouthern Downs Regional Council is on track with its pitch to attract teams to the Southern Downs region for 2018 Commonwealth Games pre-event training.Council’s “Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games Pre-event Training Destination Proposal”, launched earlier this year, showcases the best of the Southern Downs’ sports fields and facilities, which could cater for many of the sports to be represented at the Commonwealth Games in 2018.Southern Downs Regional Council’s Mayor, Cr Tracy Dobie said the Office of the Commonwealth Games had confirmed the Southern Downs as a suitable host for pre-event training.“Representatives from the Office of the Commonwealth Games undertook an inspection of sporting facilities across the Southern Downs and gave us the green light to proceed with our pre-event training destination plan.“Since then, the Southern Downs Pre-event Working Group has been off and running.“They’ve reviewed the details of all Gold Coast 2018 Games guest countries and have selected thirteen diverse countries, drawn from Africa, Asia, Europe and Oceania, that may find the Southern Downs sporting facilities attractive.“Our destination proposal has a strong focus on trying to attract teams from these regions to the Southern Downs region to enjoy our world class sporting infrastructure.“Equally though, we are focussed on the prospect of creating opportunities for cultural and educational exchanges, as well as strengthening partnerships with these guest countries.“Council and the working group are hopeful that relationships forged during the pre-event training stage of the 2018

Commonwealth Games will facilitate long term ties, with business and tourism opportunities resulting in prosperity for all parties involved into the future.“The pre-event destination proposal is a prime strategy aimed at increasing the profile of the Southern Downs on the international stage.“We want to use the destination proposal to encourage athletes and their families and friends to visit and enjoy the Southern Downs region during their stay for the Games,” she said.

Wattles v SuburbsU8 Steele Rudd Service Station - The U8 Warriors went head to head with Suburbs in Warwick. Congratulations to the whole team for an outstanding effort in attack and spreading out and moving up in a line in defence. Great work by Joshua Millard and Harry Wright taking control in

first receiver. Yamuna Sternback continues to improve her dummy half skills scoring 2 tries. Good determination shown by Jack Dal Santo, Zarrah Blackwood and Cameron McKinney running the ball strongly. Player of the match was Max Parry for tackling anyone who ran in his path and taking 6 strong runs braking through the line rewarding himself with a try. Well done Warriors!U9 Cook Haul - Saturday the team made the short journey to Warwick to do battle with Suburbs. With most of the team fronting up after Gala Day it was a slow start for some. Our whole team ran well in attack, each run making metres. Players dominating the attack this week included Corey, Billy, Atticus, Lewis, Nixon and Wil. A stand out this week was Atticus with his breakaway try, Billy and Lewis with the support of their team mates also scored tries. The team’s defensive line worked well this week, moving up and using the sideline to our advantage. Suburbs had to work hard for their tries. Noah was a stand out in our defence this week after a slow start he tackled with gusto in the final quarter. Morgan, Takira, Zac and Patrick worked the field well and supported in both defence and attack.Sam’s Ice Cream van provided each team with a free ice cream for their Man of the Match/Most Improved Player; this honour was awarded to Nixon.A big thank you to Tyler and Regan from the U16’s for running water for us and doing our game stats. It is fabulous to see the older players supporting the younger teams. This week we have John Wiggins U16 coach joining us at

training to work on our defence; previously we have Ian Brady U13 coach work with us on our tackling. As a team we appreciate the assistance of the coaches of our higher grades.U10 Eastwell and Sons - The Under 10's couldn't of gotten off to a better start this week, receiving the ball from the kick off Wattles had the perfect set making plenty of metres through our forwards then moving the ball quickly wide to score a great team try out wide. The game was played at a high standard with strong defence and some good attacking football. Wattles crossed for 9 tries to Suburbs 4. We work hard in defence every week at training and its starting to pay off, our line defence was very pleasing, with 2 and sometimes 3 players in tackles. It was a big effort this week considering most of the Wattles Under 10's played the day before at a gala day at Allora.Best on ground this week was awarded to Elijah Bowe & Piper Brady. Well done Wattles Under 10's.U11 Clifton Auto Ag Repairs - The team played their best game of the season. With an excellent defensive line that held the Suburbs players at bay and an attack that showed what the team is capable of, each and every player gave their very best to highlight what this team is made of. Player of the match went to Liam McKinney who played an outstanding game but special mention has to go to Lachlan Robson who put in a great effort. Overall, each player deserves credit for the win. Well done boys.U12 Ryanie for Tyres - The boys tried hard this week, but we're not the same team that won convincingly last time out against Millwood. Our line speed is a area of our game that needs to be improved on in the coming weeks. Darcy Minnikin was easily our best on ground with strong running in attack and solid defensive efforts, Ashley Greentree is trying hard and being quite creative with the ball in hand and Joseph Bange continues to improve the little things. The u11 players Lachlan Peardon, Ruben Sullivan, George Nott and Liam McKinney are doing a good job. Eli McKinney, Todd Newport, Marcus Blackwood, Max Peters, Darcy Gorkow, Liam Ruhle lifted their intensity in the 2nd half and improved their overall game structure. Keep trying hard boys.U13 Hopper Haulage - Once again there was no game for this age group.U14 Clifton Real Estate - The boys came away with their first win for the season, defeating Suburbs 20-8. It was the best game of the season with all boys putting in maximum effort. Jayden played a great all round game and lead the way in attack with strong running and even scoring the first try of the match. Seb's defence was yet again one of the strongest, earning him man of the match honours. We welcomed back travis who also played very well at lock. All the boys played extremely determined footy, especially in defence. thank you to all the under 13 boys who played up for us.Try scores: Jayden Lamont, Rylan Saville, Jack Bashford and Aaron Stace.

TRL: Obee’s Summary Round 10Warwick 24 drew with Souths 24 - In the Hutchies match of the day. The Game produced a cliff hanger when Warwick and Souths drew at Father Ranger oval 24 all. The scoreboard could not split the sides even at half time when the score was 12 all.

Dylan Galloway scored a good individual try to unlock the scores just after half time and then, man of the match Warwick fullback, Craig Donn chased his own grubber to get the Cowboys to a 24-12 lead with 30 minutes remaining.Warwick were their own worst enemy when they came up with some coach killers and probably had a chance to settle the match down. Unfortunately for the Cowboys, the game never settled and was played at an amazing pace throughout.Souths showed why they are undefeated when they scored under the posts after an Aaron Cherry break where he found Corey Blades backing up. Then, that man, Aaron Hooper intercepted a Cantwell pass to score his second 90 metre intercept in as many weeks to level the scores at 24 all with 20 mins remaining. The last part of the game was anyone’s. Luke Nolan attempted a field goal with 5 minutes remaining only to see it hit the crossbar. Each side had their chances but a draw was the best result is a very close game.If there was a winner, it was Souths who secured a Madsen Rasmussen trophy berth. Who their opponent is anyone’s guess.Souths 24 (Aaron Hooper 3 Corey Blades tries Luke Nolan 4 goals) drew with Warwick 24 (Brook Croft, Paul Cantwell, Dylan Galloway, Craig Donn tries Mick Bloomfield 2 Dylan Galloway 2 goals,)Highfields 40 d. Goondiwindi 0 - Highfields were all smiles on Saturday night after a satisfying win over the Goondiwindi boars. The Eagles led 18-nil at half time and went on with it in the second half to wrap up match 40-nil. Eagles Coach Gus McKellar was very pleased with his side’s performance especially defence.Eagles Centre Sean Hamel returned after a few weeks on the sideline with a rib injury and was awarded man of the match.Goondiwindi still show plenty of enthusiasm and the back row of Michael Offerdahl, Jack Laidlaw and Levi Wilson never gave up for GoondiwindiHighfields 40 (Blake Appo 2, Sean Hamel, Braydon Mitchell, Jarrod Lee, Zane Miller, Jayden Motley tries Jarrod Lee 6 Goals)Pittsworth 42 d. Brothers 12 - Pittsworth returned to form with a convincing win over Brothers in a surprising result at Club Pittsworth on Saturday night. Brothers have played well this

Wattles Under 18s Jersey SponsorsThis year saw Wattles Under 18s jersey sponsors change, after a long association with Alan and Debbie Smith's Allora Foodworks store. Wattles welcome Wilson and Rigby and Willett Electrical (both of Allora) on board as major sponsors for the Under 18 team and thank Peter and Anne Morton and Brett and Melissa Willett for their sponsorship. South East Engineering Services of Clifton and Hughes Car Sales, Toowoomba are sleeve sponsors for the Under 18s. Wattles are also grateful for their support. Both Brett and Peter were on hand on Sunday to present the Under 18 boys with their jerseys prior to their game. On behalf of Wattles and the Under 18s team, Tim Duggan presented Brett and Peter with a commemorative jersey. We wish the Under 18s all the best for the remainder of the season.

season and would have fancied themselves but big games from the Danes’ Braydon Gibbs and Matthew Briggs secured the two premiership points. The win may have come at a cost for the Danes with serious injuries to Thomas O’Sullivan (knee) and Luke Hellyer (thumb)The scores were locked at 12 all at half time. Brother’s defence went missing and Coach Liam Cullen agreed his team needed to work on that area. Whilst disappointed he pointed out that Mitch Revell continues to have a great season.
