Hollywood Police Chief Chadwick Wagner will retire in January after five years as the city’s top cop.

Wagner, 52, is leaving amid reports of significant friction with his new bosses at City Hall – City Manager Cathy Swanson-Rivenbark and her top assistant Frank Fernandez, the new director of public safety.

“They are making his life miserable every day,” said Jeff Marano, senior vice

president with the Broward County Police Benevolent Association.

“He’s not getting along with them and they have asked him to leave a little earlier than he’d planned,” said the head of another police department who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Hollywood spokeswoman Raelin Storey confirmed that Wagner is retiring, but said there is “no truth to the rumors” of conflict.

“There’s no tension that I’m aware of,” said Storey. “Chief Wagner will have

completed 30 years of service for full retirement in January.

Wagner did not return phone messages seeking comment.

CHANGING OF THE GUARDSwanson-Rivenbark replaced short-

lived City Manager Doug Hewett in June. Hewett resigned in June in the wake of his drunk-driving arrest on Easter Sunday.

The new city manager soon created a new assistant’s job to oversee the police and fire departments.

Fernandez, who retired in 2010 as deputy chief of the Miami Police Department, was hired in August to be the city’s first assistant city manager for public safety. His annual salary: $136,000.

Fernandez’s arrival has touched off speculation that he’ll become Hollywood’s next police chief – an idea Swanson-Rivenbark would like to extinguish.

“She made it very clear to me that our assistant city manager was hired to

be an assistant city manager and that his expertise would be critical in helping lead recruitment efforts, but that there is no plan for him to serve as police chief,” said Storey.

UNION TALKS STALLED

News of Wagner’s imminent departure comes as contract negotiations have broken off between the city and PBA union. The old agreement expired Sept. 30.

“The city would love for him to leave early,” said Marano. “The city manager cannot control the chief and she needs to break the union.”

Both sides are waiting to see what happens in next week’s election. If the commission becomes more union friendly, Marano could declare an impasse and seek commissioners’ support to get a contract.

“They don’t want to do anything before the elections. The incumbents here are very nervous,” said Marano.

The PBA considers Fernandez “anti-employee” and wants Wagner around as long as possible “because of all the turmoil,” said Marano. “They don’t like the PBA, and especially me.”

It is also hoped that the chief will “nurture somebody from the inside” to take over when he leaves. Marano declined to say whom the PBA would support as a new boss for the approximately 300-officer department.

WAGNER AS CHIEF

Wagner, a graduate of North Miami Beach Senior High School and Barry University, was named interim chief on Nov. 1, 2007 and hired to the permanent post a few months later.

He replaced Chief James Scarberry. who retired amid accusations that he had leaked information about a federal corruption probe into several top police commanders and the mayor.

Prosecutors said the leak led them to prematurely close an undercover investigation in which FBI agents posed as heroin smugglers in a mob family. Five Hollywood officers pleaded guilty in the case.

Wagner gained national attention in 2008 when he held a press conference to declare that the 1981 abduction and murder of 6-year-old Adam Walsh was solved and that longtime suspect Ottis Toole committed the crime. Toole died in prison in 1996.

Wagner offered no new evidence, however, and suggested city detectives had botched the investigation.

The chief based his decision on a report prepared by a retired Miami Beach detective and Walsh-family confidant who last year co-authored a controversial book about the case.

World War II hero honored by Mayor BoberBy Caron Conway | LEaD CorrESPonDEnT

When Hillcrest resident Dominick Pellicano attended the Mayor’s Veterans Day Barbeque on Nov. 11, it was more than an occasion to be honored for his service to his country. It turned into an opportunity to create a positive memory from his difficult experiences during World War II.

Pellicano, 93, isn’t one to participate in Veterans Day observances or veterans organizations, and the old Army buddies he had kept in touch with after the war have all passed away. But his most significant loss was the death of his wife of 63 years, Carmela, on Oct. 19. His daughter, Barbara Pellicano-Tisi, thought the second annual Veterans Day event hosted by Mayor Peter Bober would give her father something to look forward to and lift his spirits.

Pellicano-Tisi encouraged her dad to bring along his medals: a Purple Heart he received for shrapnel wounds and the Soldier’s Medal for pulling two injured American servicemen out of a burning Jeep that had hit a landmine. Pellicano happened to meet avid WWII memorabilia collectors Arthur and Linda Metzler, who were so impressed with the veteran’s service that they introduced him to Bober and Florida Senator Eleanor Sobel.

“Artie called my father a ‘true

American WWII hero,” Pellicano-Tisi said.

Pellicano, who was drafted into the Army eight months before the start of the war at age 21, served five years in France and in Germany, where he suffered trench foot, a medical condition caused by prolonged exposure of the feet to wet, cold and unsanitary conditions. A serious kidney infection during his military service ultimately resulted in the need for dialysis treatments three times a week.

Pellicano also was hit by shrapnel in his hands and a leg, with another piece striking his ammunition belt and lodging in a cartridge. “The doctor said, ‘You’d have been dead,’” he recalled.

The plane transporting Pellicano to the hospital nearly crashed, leaving him with a fear of flying that has kept him off airplanes ever since. An even worse fear is evoked by unexpected reminders of wartime such as a car backfire.

“I still jump—any explosion, any loud noise,” he said. “War is horrible. You’re

always afraid, always afraid you’re gonna get it. You never know if you’re gonna come out.”

Pellicano downplays his act of heroism in saving the lives of two fellow servicemen as shells were popping all around him. “You acted on your instinct,” he said. “You just

do it.”He expressed concern for today’s

soldiers because the weapons technology is so advanced. And he laments the proliferation and great expense of wars in modern times.

“World War II, that was a good war,” Pellicano said. “Some of the wars they start now are useless. It seems like one war ends and another one starts, one after the other.”

After he was wounded and discharged from the Army, Pellicano was a letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service for 30 years in his native Bronx. He finally retired for good at 65 after working as a guard for 10 years at the U.S. Coast Guard Armory.

Other than the occasional frightening reminders of his WWII service, “My memory, my past, is completely wiped out,” Pellicano said. “But one thing I will never forget, and that’s my wife.”

While many of his post-war memories may need refreshing with family photos, Pellicano’s daughter said he’s still sharp as a tack at 93. These days, Pellicano-Tisi is focusing on keeping her father busy, trying to find a regular penny ante poke game or woodworking club that fits into his dialysis schedule.

“My mom was his hobby,” she said. “When you get old, just each other is enough.”

First Broward Commissioners to leave office due to term limits

Broward County Mayor Rodstrom is retiring from public service after 30 years of accomplishment in public office. He was elected to the county commission in 1992 being vice chair in 1994 and 1999, chair in 1995 and 2000, vice mayor in 2011, and mayor in 2012.

Mayor Rodstrom’s career in public service began as a Fort Lauderdale City Commissioner in 1982. During his term, he also served as vice mayor and mayor of Fort Lauderdale. Later he would be appointed to serve as the mayor of Sunrise in 1998.

Over the past 20 years, Mayor

Rodstrom has been the guardian of fiscal responsibility, using his knowledge and financial expertise to expend taxpayers’ money wisely and with prudence. This austerity led to a AAA bond rating, the highest bond rating available and higher than that of the federal government, allowing Broward County to save millions of dollars due to its sound financial status and expertise in budget planning.

Commissioner Ilene Lieberman was first elected to the county commission in 1996 serving Broward County more than twenty-seven distinguished years as an elected official.

Commissioner Lieberman served as vice-chair and chair of the Broward County Commission in 1997 and 1998. She then served as vice-mayor and mayor in 2003 and 2004. She was first elected to serve on the Lauderhill City Council in 1984. She has also served as president of the Florida Association of Counties.

Her accomplishments during her decades of public service are far reaching and include everything from helping to save lives to building a new courthouse to complex legal issues to adopting kittens from Broward County animal care.

Under her governance Broward County experienced a whirlwind of change that included forming “Vision Broward,” which is a community-driven plan that created a working blueprint for economic growth in Broward County. She also initiated a successful effort to provide for organ transplant surgeries in Broward County.

A new mayor and vice

mayor were selected by the commission on Nov. 20. Two new county commissioners, former Florida State Representative Marty Kiar (Broward County District 1) and former Florida State Representative Tim Ryan (Broward County District 7) were sworn in to office at the November commission meeting.

monthly feature

Benny is a 4 ½ month old rescue. I’m told he is a “Schnorkie”, part Mini Schnauzer and Yorkie. Benny is a very smart, and a very loving puppy. He knows how to throw his ball, and every morning, he likes to play “Prancer Head”. First thing in the morning he has to take mine, or my husband’s finger gently in his mouth and walk us around the house. It’s like he is showing us off. Benny has big plans! He has decided to give back to the community, and become a therapy dog. He will be starting training in about a month. He will visit hospitals, schools, and ALF’s. He wants to continue bringing smiles to not only people on the street, but people in need of a little TLC. We are so proud of our Fur Baby! Parents: Justin & Sherry Malinchak.

Leung Healthcare is one of South Florida’s most innovative healthcare organizations, providing a full spectrum of healthcare services and wellness programs throughout its locations in Hollywood, North Miami and North Miami Beach. Treating patients ages 12 and up, the medical practice specializes in Primary Care Internal Medicine and Family Medicine, with a special interest in Senior Health and Preventative Medicine.

Leung Healthcare works to improve and enhance the overall health and wellbeing of its communities through high quality patient care and education. Informative monthly wellness seminars are given by Leung physicians and guest medical specialists where topics range from “prevention of dementia” to “how to prepare healthy diabetic-safe meals”. All patients are welcome to participate.

Some programs that are popular among the senior community are the “Physician Supervised” exercise program and the “Silver Sneakers” exercise program, where seniors ages 65 and up participate in a 45 minute low impact dance cardio workout. The program supports seniors in living a healthy lifestyle says instructor, Tom, “The class is very popular. It teaches the students how to stay active while doing things at home like watching TV. Sometimes the classes are so full that you can’t even get a seat”.

For added convenience, Leung offers a special pharmacy delivery service and

transportation to and from patient’s homes to the centers. Each week, welcome breakfasts and office tours are available to seniors with Medicare in order to meet the doctors and staff.

THE LEUNG STORYBoard Certified in Internal Medicine,

Gilbert Leung M.D. began his practice in 1983. In 1984, wife Theresa Leung left her career as Medical Record Administrator of Mt. Sinai Hospital to join her husband in growing the family business and to dedicate more time to raising their three children. Together they built the first Leung Healthcare building in North Miami. Since then, the family has expanded their practice to occupy three locations and

now employs 6 doctors and one Advanced Registered Nurse Practioner (ARNP). Their three grown children participate in the operations as well with their two sons having earned Medical Degrees and their daughter recently graduating from Law School. Many patients have received continued service from the Leung practice since its opening in 1983.

The holidays are right around the corner. Make this the year that you actually get to enjoy them by spending a few minutes organizing your parties, gift lists and holiday cards – right now! The Greater Hollywood Chamber of Commerce membership directory is a valuable resource in making these plans and also serves to support your local community at the same time. Don’t forget you’re A.B.C.s! Always Buy Chamber!

For example, is there a house party or an office gathering that you need to coordinate? Why not have them catered by a chamber member? Just visit the chamber’s website at www.hollywoodchamber.org and click on the “Member Directory” at the top right of the screen. The “search” feature on the chamber’s online membership directory makes it easy to choose a quality caterer. In just five minutes you can request more information from a few different caterers and feel like you’ve actually made headway in your party planning.

Need more help with your party? Type the words “party” or “event” into the keyword section and you’ll find more assistance on that front, as well. From party planners to event decorators to party video production, the chamber has just about everything you need to help you plan the best holiday party ever. Another five minutes spent and you can make progress on that front, too.

Have you booked a restaurant for your office party yet? You don’t have to stick with the same old place. There are dozens of restaurants in the chamber’s membership directory. Browse the list and

you are certain to find a cuisine and location that’s ideal for a luncheon or dinner gathering of any size. Then make a few phone calls or click on the links to some of their websites and explore the opportunity of holding your party there. Ten minutes spent researching this will alleviate the stress you’ll feel later if you don’t get this accomplished before everyplace is booked up!

Now, to tackle the gift list. Sure, you could wait until the last minute and head to the local drugstore or grocery store to buy generic gift cards. Or, if you really want to make a good, thoughtful impression, try shopping locally and making a more personalized gift list. We like the idea of buying gift certificates to one of our local

restaurants, stores and service providers. Sure, it takes a few more minutes, but you’ll feel so much better giving something thoughtful and eliminate the embarrassment of giving a generic gift. Dedicate 15 minutes to this task now!

Are holiday cards on your to-do list? The chamber has numerous graphic designers, photographers and printers that can make your family or business stand out in the sea of cards this year. Make a few phone calls or click on a few website links and explore the services they offer. Get it done now so you won’t be stressed about it later.

By breaking the work involved with the holidays down and tackling the pieces early, you can spend more time later actually enjoying and celebrating the holiday season. It just takes a little planning on the front end and a little help from www.hollywoodchamber.com.
