Allen County-Scottsville Lady Patriot/Patriot Basketball Schedule 2011-12 (See Girls, on Page 19) By Don Meador C-T Sports Editor Allen County-Scottsville may have dropped a fifth consecutive game last Fri- day against the Glasgow Lady Scotties but the Lady Patriots’ efforts down the stretch left an air of excite- ment in the gym. Glasgow won the game 62-56 but not before AC-S put together an impressive 24-7 final eight minutes. “We played 11 strong and Glasgow played seven,” said AC-S Coach Brad Bonds. “They got really tired. Our intentions for the second half were to keep the pres- sure on and hopefully wear them down. Things started to go our way.” After three periods Friday night, the Glasgow Lady Scotties led 55-32. The huge lead came about primarily after the Lady Scotties put together a 25-7 first period, taking advantage of a rough eight-minute span for AC-S. “We weren’t playing that bad,” Coach Bonds said. “We just couldn’t get anything to go our way. Our shots just would not fall and we didn’t have the energy level I want- ed us to have. It just seemed like every ball bounced the wrong way. I felt like I was in the twilight zone.” The Lady Scotties—on the strength of seven of 16 from the floor and nine of 10 free throws—grabbed the early double-digit lead. However, in the second eight minutes, AC-S regrouped. Baskets from Morgan Rich, Holly Robinson and Savannah Gregory as well as five-of-six free-throw shooting revived the offense. Defensively, AC-S increased the pres- sure. The result was a 13-10 quarter in favor of the Lady Patriots. Glasgow led 35-20 at halftime. “In the second quarter, our kids decided they finally wanted to play basketball,” Coach Bonds added. “At halftime we made a few mi- nor adjustments and came out with a lot of energy. In the second half we competed with a team that’s ranked highly in the state.” The Lady Patriots cut the Lady Scotties’ lead to 12 af- ter a Rich put-back at the 7:12 mark of the third. Glas- gow regrouped and actually looked to be pushing the game open until the final frame, when AC-S chipped away at Glasgow’s 23 point lead. The late-game run be- gan as the Lady Patriots attacked Glasgow’s zone defense with crisp passing and a three-point barrage. Inside the first minute of the fourth, Lauren Yokley drained back-to-back threes to trim the lead to 17. Glas- gow pushed the lead back to 19, only to see Bre Boards and Rachel Carter connect on threes to close the gap to 13, 57-44, with 5:19 left. Lady Scottie Shailika Smith scored inside to increase the lead to 15. Carter answered with a second three to trim the lead to 12. The run continued as the Lady Patriots switched to an inside game plan. Rich dished out back-to-back as- sists to Robinson for points in the paint. Then, Sandy Young’s rebound basket at 1:31 capped off a 9-0 run and trimmed the lead to six, 59-53. Moments later, after Smith scored inside, Rich canned a three to pull AC-S within five, 61-56, with 10 seconds left. The Lady Scot- ties went on to escape with the 62-56 win. “It took every one of us,” Bonds said. “I’m so proud of these kids and what it showed. It’s still a loss, but it’s one that you digest a lit- tle easier with the fact that we played as well as we did. We can’t dig ourselves a hole and get down by that much. Hopefully, we can correct some mistakes and keep getting better.” Rich paced the Lady Pa- triots with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Smith led all scor- ers with 26. The Lady Patri- ots were 20-57 from the floor (35.1 percent) including six of 14 from three-point range. At the foul line, AC-S was 10-14 (71.4 percent). AC-S forced Glasgow into 17 turnovers, were even with the taller team on the glass and outscored the Lady Scot- ties off the bench, 17-6. Ten of the 12 Lady Patriots who played in the game scored. The Lady Patriot effort against the Lady Scotties was refreshing given the fact that AC-S was playing a fourth consecutive game against an opponent ranked among the state’s top 22 teams. A week earlier, AC-S lost to third-ranked Monroe County and last Tuesday, dropped a 58-41 contest to 15th-ranked Bowling Green.
