Having made it through anoth- er busy year, we yearn for a reprieve where we can catch our breath and experience some rejuvenation and renew- al. However, as many of us know quite well, the summer season often fails to feel very restful, as it can present different burdens from the rest of the year. Oftentimes summer schedules and traveling can add to our weariness, and we return from vacations in need of a vacation. How then can we experience some much-needed rest during yet another busy season of life? I believe these scriptures can help us as we seek that goal. Be still, and know that I am God. – Psalm 46:10a The temptation for many of us this summer will simply be to go, go, go! However, God’s Word gives us permission to stop and be still. Taking time for rest (Sabbath) is not simply a suggestion by God but ra- ther a commandment. God knows how desperately we need rest in our lives because He too took time to rest following His creating of the world (Genesis 2:2-3). Not only is rest important for us as creatures but, as the Psalmist makes clear, as those created by God it’s imperative that we make time to be still so that we can truly reflect upon the majesty of our Creator. So make it a priority this summer to carve out time each day to simply be still in order to reconnect with the source of all life: the great I AM. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own. – Matthew 6:34 These words of Jesus may seem rather pessimistic at first glance, given his acknowledgment of daily troubles, and yet Jesus is simply be- ing a realist. Each day brings with it the potential for troubles, fears or anxieties. If we not only face those daily realities but also pile on worries concerning future realities, the stress of it all may indeed overwhelm us. Thus Jesus teaches us to take life one day at a time, which should help to minimize the stress in our lives, or at least make it manageable. This admonishment by Jesus does not mean that we shouldn’t plan for to- morrow, as there’s obviously a need to do some of that in our lives. However, we should live every day with the confidence that the future is securely in God’s hands, and see each day as an opportunity to glori- fy God, to advance His Kingdom, and to give thanks for the blessings He bestows on us each day. Do you have a day to give? 24 hours to change the life of a child? So not to offer “false advertising”, let me explain! Generally looking at a school calendar, KIDS HOPE USA mentors meet with their children once a week from early October to late May. Counting weeks, this gives us roughly 30 weeks of mentoring or 30 hours. NOW we eliminate the hours there is no mentoring….

1 week for Thanksgiving break 2 weeks for Christmas vacation Snow days TCAP testing weeks Spring break Class parties/trips Occasional times your child is absent

Suddenly, the commitment doesn’t look like too much! The time you give, alt-hough priceless & precious to a child, isn’t as overwhelming as it appears. One hour, one child, approximately one day in your life, to change a life. Will you consider becoming a special friend to a child at Sanborn Elementary this year? Contact LaRae if you’d like more information at [email protected].

Hey Kids!!! Get ready… Wednesday Night Live is coming back in September! Bring a friend on Wednesday nights for age-appropriate actives and programing for kids ages pre-k through 5th grade! This year TIM Team will help lead the worship time and teach you with skits and new games to help you become better friends with Jesus! We can’t wait to see you!

FC has set up a fund to provide meals and health care for the independent orphanage visited by our Haiti Missions team in June, and Lucas has offered up his beard to help get funds rolling in!

Donate to the Haiti Orphans fund between now and July 31, and with every donation you get to vote to SHAVE or to SAVE the beard! Donations will be tallied on July 31, and the choice with the most funds will determine the fate of Lucas’ beard. (Pastor Dan mentioned something about putting his pension fund towards the SHAVE fund.)

You can donate on-line through our website, FCLC.org, or in the offering plate. Please indicate “Haiti Orphans Fund” and “Shave” or “Save” in the memo of your check.

Please consider serving for this short term of July & August in the following positions: USHERS, COMMUNION ASSISTANTS, GREETERS, ACOLYTES and WELCOME CENTER

We are also looking for a couple, two people or a family to serve on Saturday evening worship on the first Sunday of the month for July, August and September.

Tranquil water feature by columbarium

Dove sculpture by FC member, Parker McDonald

Pastor’s Perspective, Cont. They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. – Acts 2:32 Finally, taking a lesson from the Early Church (which we have been studying this summer through the lens of the book of Acts), we hope you will make it a priority to spend time at Faith Community this summer. As you will see from the pages of this newsletter, there’s a lot going on at the church this summer, so you should have no trouble finding a place to connect. First and foremost, we hope you’ll join us for weekend worship as we gather together to praise and glorify God. If you desire to dive more deeply into God’s Word, there are many Bible studies being offered throughout the week and on Sunday mornings. If you’re seeking fellowship opportunities in order to make connections with others here at FC, there are likewise many options available for doing so. And, of course, we hope that we all will continue this summer to lift each other and our world up in prayer, as the Spirit promises to work mightily through it. While verse 32, which opens that passage in Acts, is incredibly important for us as a body of believers, it runs the risk of keeping our attention focused internally. Thus it’s crucial that I, likewise, lift up verse 47b which reads, “And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.” This, once again, brings us back to our new mission statement: “Connecting a broken world with Jesus.” Above all else we do this summer, may we commit both as a congregation and individually to this mission; whether we find ourselves on mission trips, traveling with family or friends, or just going about our daily lives here at home. In Christ Alone, Pastor Erik

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT

Neal and Laura Carver Neal and Laura Carver joined Faith Community in 2002 after they had met Pastor Dan at various school functions and decided to give Faith a try. They had previously worshiped at other churches in Longmont but found a home at FC. They said it just feels like family here.

Neal was born in Texas but grew up in Arizona where his father managed a hardware store and later owned a restaurant. Laura’s father was in the military and the family moved around quite a bit and she graduated from high school in Alaska.

Neal and Laura met when they were students at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff. They were friends for a couple of years before they started dating. After graduating with a business and financial administration degree, Neal began working in the business office of a construction management company in California. Laura did her student teaching in Arizona. After a short engagement Neal and Laura were married in 1980 in San Clemente, CA, during the worst rainstorm of the year. The wedding flowers did not show up, but the pastor’s wife picked daisies for Laura and the wedding party to carry. Laura carried a single daisy in a white Bible for the ceremony. She knew this was a sign from God for their marriage!

During the early years of their marriage, they moved quite a bit and lived in TN, AK, OR, ID, CA and NV. In 1988 they visited Colorado and decided that they would like to live here, so Neal sent resumes to several companies and was offered a job with Miniscribe in Longmont. Approximately seven years later, Neal and some partners bought out a division of the company, Technistar (robotics), and ran that company for 10 years. After working for a company in Estes Park for a year, Neal went to work for Applied Films which then became Applied Materials. During that time, Laura and Neal moved to Italy for two years.

Laura graduated with a teaching degree and taught high school English, Speech and Drama before returning to school at UNC to earn a degree in counseling in 1991. She worked for the Weld County DA’s office and worked with Weld County youth for 3 years. She has been in private practice for 20 years – 18 years in Greeley and 2 years in Longmont. Laura said she loves what she does!

The Carvers have two children: Daniel is 30 and lives in Aurora and works in marketing and Katie is 26 and lives in Ft. Collins and works as a police officer.

Laura and Neal love serving at Faith Community and in the community. They both volunteer to provide Hope Sack Lunches and they both serve in the Welcome Center at church once a month. Laura said that serving in the Welcome Center is a small commitment and a great way to meet people. She is able to help most people with their questions and needs but said, “If I don’t know something, I just tell people that I’ll ask Gloria and she will get back to you”. Laura also volunteers her time each Tuesday afternoon at the church and provides free counseling by appointment. She also volunteered with Hospice Grief Groups for 10 years. Neal and Laura have also volunteered in the past by bringing communion to shut-ins. Neal is currently serving on our church council as President of the Congregation. He is very grateful for the talented and supportive committee.

Something to Think About….Something to Think About….Something to Think About….

In last month’s issue of Faith Communicator under the above title, the question at the end got my attention: “What is your definition of a tithe?”

The Old Testament definition of 10% of annual produce or earnings doesn’t seem to apply today because most of us are paid weekly, bi-monthly, or monthly. The 10% tithe today, and by the

way God was fair when He used per cent because whether you make $20,000 per year or $200,000 per year, it is the same for each of us, is on our current income.

God established this early in the Old Testament but the Bible also says in Malachi 3:6 that “I am the Lord and I never change.” This is repeated in several New Testament scripture.

My definition of the tithe would be “a tenth of the first fruit (gross amount) of our monthly income to Faith Communi-ty Lutheran Church.” That is why the first check I write each month is to FCLC.

Malachi 3:10 says … “Bring all the tithes into the storehouse (FCLC) that there be food in My house, and try me in this,” says the Lord of Hosts, “if I will not open for you the windows of heaven and pour out for you such blessing that there will not be room enough to receive it.”

FCLC is where we are being fed on the scriptures, in prayers, teachings, and worship and is the reason I used it in my definition of a tithe.

The question is “should we tithe, and why?”.

The answer is yes because God, the creator of the universe and owner of all things (“the earth is the Lord’s and the fullness therein”), tells us to. The answer to “why” is so that He can pour out blessings upon us. I don’t know about you but I can use all He has to offer and all I have to do is obey Him.

Church Governance Task Force Report

Our Executive Committee recently commissioned this task force to review our staff organizational chart and our church governance structure since we've added 2 new pastors this past year. Furthermore, we've had a growing sense that as a larger congregation, we are probably more than ready for a restructuring of our church council since it really hasn't changed much in 25 years.

The task force met in June and has already proposed short and long-term changes which our EC (Executive Committee) and pastors are reviewing. These will then go before our church council for approval. Long term changes, if approved by council, will go before the congregation at our Annual Meeting in January. Please watch for upcoming reports. As always, your prayers and feedback are welcome.

June Council Meeting Minutes

Treasurer’s Report: Rob Ney presented the May report. Still trending negatively, down 10%. Need to increase attend-ance. Down 10% in giving, 12% in attendance. Why aren’t people coming? Staff has formed shepherding groups, di-viding all the 400 families, and they call them to find out their status. Feedback/Status report requested for council by the next meeting.

Old Business:

Bob Ucman – Update on ‘council/governance review’ task force: We need to restructure the church as a professional church, not a small church. Asked for blessing of council and moved to form a task force to look at management system through this period of growth. Using a governance expert, the task force will make recommendations for the long term. A motion was presented to establish a governance model task force, providing short and long term recommendations for the management structure of the church. The motion was seconded and approved

New Business:

Constitution review – Article 10 - no issues or problems.

Ministry Updates:

Worship and Arts – Damian Wise and Diane 50-60 servants are required each weekend. Worship and Arts presented 2 productions last year. Some of the small

groups that comprise the ministry are Leap of Faith, KICS, TIM Team and worship teams. A Bible verse that re-flects their purpose is John 4:23.

The ministry was blessed by some upgrades to the sound booth and some microphones through a gift KICS Dinner Theatre sold out both nights for “God of This City” Worship team holds monthly BBQs during the summer to build community among the various worship teams. Challenges:

Saturday worship numbers are way down Volunteer base for summer shows Lack of participation and scheduling conflicts among worship teams (maybe burn-out) Get Amplify service to next level Retaining quality musicians

Strategies: More venue concerts Worship outreach to the community Grow in-house talent Off-site worship service Increase quality of Worship Team (arrangement, continuity) Metric for gauging growth: attendance, increased team involvement, Grow TIM Teams Would like to pay some musicians

Outreach

Committee is working on creating a brochure to explain their activities. The Ministry distributes the First Fruits Giving, 20% of offerings, through an application process. 38 organizations,

mostly faith-based, were awarded grants of up to $500. Requests of over $500 typically require a 2 month process, to allow the committee to pray about their action.

Over last 5 years have distributed $779,585. Grant applications are submitted annually. Good Samaritan committee helps individuals that need immediate help for living expenses, such as utility bills,

rent, etc. Some funds are also designated in addition to First Fruits. Will be in the Boulder County parade, handing out info on fans. Atwood Shelter: one unit is sponsored as transitional housing Life Tree Cafe: Team is working on finding an off-site location for an additional offering. Sandwich sign message and money for paint is provided by Outreach Select where the holiday and special offerings will be sent. Past destinations have been Philippines typhoon vic-

tims, local fire and flood victims and others. In-gatherings: Life Choices, food & clothing, backpacks and baseball caps, etc.
