Church Staff Rev. Scott Stancil Pastor Ricky Stark Minister of Students & Education Carol Petty CDC Director Hayley Smith Ministry Intern Encourager THE FIRST BAPTIST LYMAN WEEK OF FEBRUARY 24, 2010 Family and friends, I have nothing to say! Normally as I sit and write to you the Lord brings so much to mind that I must prayerfully narrow it down to the message I feel led to communicate, but today…nothing. Well, that’s not exactly true. I feel compelled to share with you the scripture that has meant the most to me in recent weeks. So, no thoughts of my own, just the Word! I hope the Lord will use it mightily in your life as He has in mine. “For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give an account.” (Hebrews 4:12-13) “Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporal, but what is unseen is eternal.” (2 Corinthians 4:16-18) “Continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you to will and to act according to his good pleasure. Do everything without complaining or arguing, so that you may become blameless and pure, children of God without fault…” (Philippians 2:12-15) I pray that God will use His Word to profoundly impact your heart with encouragement, direction and conviction. May He and He alone, rule our hearts and guide our every step. In the Student Ministry wersquove been studying the life of Abraham

recently When we look at his life we donrsquot see any hesitationmdashjust faith

and obedience When God tells him that he and his barren wife aremdashin

their old age no lessmdashgoing to have descendants as numerous as the stars

in the sky Abraham does not bat an eye The very next line in Scripture

states ldquoAbram believed the Lord and he credited it to him as

righteousnessrdquo Nevertheless Abraham had questions and he was not afraid to be real

and open and honest with God we should take this cue from the father of our faith and

stop trying to hide our uncertainties and anxieties from Godmdashafter all He already knows

them And like so many of us Abraham was guilty of trying to ldquohelp God outrdquo Perhaps

he thought like so many of us have been taught ldquoGod helps those who help

themselvesrdquo Many people think this saying is from the Bible Itrsquos not Itrsquos a saying from

the deist Benjamin Franklin who did not believe that God was concerned with the affairs

of man (and morally speaking Franklin certainly lived as though this were true) But this

saying is completely antithetical to the teachings of Scripturemdashbecause we canrsquot help

ourselves and thatrsquos the problem Sinners canrsquot save themselves and finite creatures

cannot do the impossible

Abraham wanted to help God produce this heirmdashfirst by considering the adoption of his

servant Eliezer to be his heir and then by sleeping with his maidservant Hagar But God

did not wantmdashand He certainly didnrsquot needmdashAbrahamrsquos help in accomplishing His

purpose God wanted to show off and sure enough barren Sarah in her old age gave

birth to the promised son who would be the forefather of our Messiah Jesus I wonder

how often I get in the way of God doing His thing What in your life are you wrestling

with anxious over or just plain angry about Instead of trying to fix it yourself why not

turn it over to the Great Fixer Therersquos a line from a Bebo Norman song that says ldquoThis

could be all about just letting gomdashor this could be all about just holding onrdquo I wonder

how this might apply to your faith today Is there something you need to let go of Or

do you just need to hold on tight to Jesus to get you through it Or both Whatever it is

turn it over to the God of the Impossible who works all things together for our good
