NATIONAL STRATEGIC ASSET The UK Government has designated The Bristol & Bath Science Park as one of three strategic national assets for the development of advanced technology.

FIRST MAJOR OCCUPIER The first major site occupier is the National Composites Centre (NCC), which is a member of the first national High Value Manufacturing Catapult Centre. Their 8,500m2 building is BREAAM Excellent. Tier One members include Rolls-Royce, Airbus, VESTAS, GKN and Agusta Westland.

Recently, the UK Government announced further funding to enable the NCC to double its capacity by spring 2014.

The NCC is an independent, open-access national centre that delivers world-class innovation in the design and rapid manufacture of composites and facilitates their widespread industrial exploitation.

A key part of the Government’s UK Composites Strategy, the NCC brings together dynamic companies and enterprising academics to develop new technologies for the design and rapid manufacture of high-quality composite products. The combination of academic and business strengths speeds progress from laboratory to design to factory and into products; ensuring that the UK has the means to succeed in intensely competitive global markets.

The state-of-the-art NCC building opened at the Park in November 2011. The Bristol city region is already at the forefront of composites development, both as a research hub and as a manufacturing base, and the NCC is able to capitalise and build on this.

The NCC works with centres of excellence around the UK, including regional composites centres and the University of Bristol’s Advanced Composites Centre for Innovation and Science (ACCIS), now relocating to the Science Park.

NCC ACTIVITIES INCLUDE:

1 Providing manufacturing facilities at an industrial scale and rapid manufacturing processes capable of building prototypes to validate design concepts

2 Becoming the hub of the UK’s effort to develop and implement rapid composite manufacturing technologies and systems

3 Leading the co-ordination of a strengthened network of regional centres of composites excellence

4 Providing direction and focus for fundamental research and collaborative links with UK universities

5 Helping to develop and co-ordinate training to support the skills base necessary for applying advanced and specialist composite technologies

KEY STAKEHOLDERS The involvement of the universities of Bath, Bristol and West of England is integral to the success of the Park, particularly in terms of reputation and standing.

Each year the universities of Bath and Bristol achieve research excellence ratings for over 80% of the research that they conduct in the science, technology, engineering and maths subjects. Over 2,000 PhD students are awarded degrees every year from the three universities.

Other key stakeholders include the West of England Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP), South Gloucestershire Council and the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills.

GATEWAY POLICY The Park has a Gateway Policy which describes the preferred occupier as science, technology or research based. The objective of the policy is to support the development of diverse and robust research business communities.

When ideas collide, sparks fly and innovation happens. We call this Creative Collision. Creative collisions connect businesses, spark new ideas and inspire success.

There’s no telling where a new idea will come from, so we’ve designed networking and conferencing facilities and other shared spaces that encourage people to meet, mix and collaborate.

At the heart of this is the Forum; the place to eat, meet and network. It’s a bright and airy central space, linked to the Innovation and Grow On centres, and open to occupants and the community. Every aspect of this modern, spacious building is designed to actively encourage innovation.

From a fortuitous chance meeting, to the informal sharing of ideas over lunch at Friska’s café, the comfortable break-out spaces and the adjoining conference rooms; the Forum offers different spaces to suit your pace and purpose.

Why not take a virtual tour? To explore the Forum and the rest of the Science Park, visit our website www.bbsp.co.uk and click on the Virtual Tour tab at the top of the Home page.

INFORMATION & COMMUNICATIONS TECHNOLOGY

One of the region’s core economic strengths is its ICT sector, particularly in microelectronics. Second only to the USA, Europe’s largest concentration of silicon chip designers is found in this region. Groundbreaking collaborative research and expertise has attracted key players to the region in wireless communications (Motorola, Orange, Toshiba), photonics (Bookham, QinetiQ, Thales), semiconductors (Broadcom, picoChip, Infineon, St Microelectronics, Xmos) as well as in the supercomputing (HP, Advanced Numerical Simulation Research Centre) and software sectors. With support from organisations such as Silicon South West and two five star research establishments in Bath and Bristol, the South West ICT sector is sure to thrive.

RENEWABLE TECHNOLOGIES

Environmental Technologies is a dynamic, emerging sector consisting of around 1,300 enterprises, employing over 20,000 people and contributing around £1,300 million to the regional economy. Estimates say that the economy association with the environment has the potential to develop a further 39,000 jobs and £670 million of additional output over the next few years. Research in Tidal Generation Technologies is a particular strength with Marine Current Turbines, a Siemens Company and Alstom’s Tidal Generation located in the region.

ADVANCED ENGINEERING

The South West is home to one of the largest concentrations of aerospace companies in the World. The area has a long aviation history, producing Concorde in the 1970’s and is now Airbus’ centre of excellence for wings, landing gear and fuel systems. Nine of the 12 largest aerospace companies in the UK have major facilities here.

They, in turn, are supported by upwards of 800 supply chain companies. With high level support from organisations such as the West of England Aerospace Forum and highly integrated research facilities at local universities, the industry continues to rise to the exciting challenges facing this fast moving industry.

BIOMEDICAL RESEARCH

The region is a major centre of biomedical research with internationally recognised expertise. Employment in the sector is growing faster than the national average, with a 48% increase between 1998 and 2004. Core international strengths exist in biohazards and biosecurity at DSTL and the Health Protection Agency, as well as in orthopaedics through Corin Group. The region also boasts strong networking and collaboration with academic institutions, as well as facilities at United Bristol and North Bristol Hospital Trusts, and through the BRIG-H strategic research and innovation partnership; all providing the right environment for biomedical companies to further strengthen this fast growing sector.

DESIGN, CREATIVE & DIGITAL MEDIA

The South West is a hotbed for design, creative and digital media. The sector is growing more rapidly in this region than anywhere else in the UK, employing the most creatives outside London. With the BBC Natural History Unit, Aardman, Endemol and 3CR all based in Bristol as well as key clusters and media centres such as Spike Island, Pervasive Media Studio and the Watershed, we enjoy some of the most sought-after audio-visual production facilities in the UK.

The South West has a diverse economy, demonstrating strength in multiple sectors.

SUSTAINABILITY Sustainability is a driving force behind the design, construction and operating principles of the Science Park. In addition to the site achieving the CEEQUAL Excellent rating, the first Park buildings and National Composites Centre have attained the internationally recognised BREAAM Excellent standard.

BBSP One has 200 metres of photovoltaic roofing, shared across the Innovation and Grow On centres, providing 10% of the energy. These buildings have achieved and EPC ‘A’ rating. Our energy centre is powered by a biomass boiler, using locally sourced wood pellets.

As well as 2 electric bikes and 3 Mitsubishi iMiev cars, there are also 9 electric car charge points located in the main car park at the Forum. With a travel radius of 90 miles, fully charged, the cars are available for use by tenants and occupants who would prefer to use a car from time to time.

Our pioneering dimmer-switch street lighting, can be dialled up or down according to the time of year. Windows that fully open, provide natural light and ventilation and allow occupants to enjoy views of the 2,200 metres of natural hedgerows and mature trees that have been retained across the Park. Better still, if you’re working late, bring your night vision goggles and you could be lucky enough to see resident bats and badgers moving around the site using bat poles and badger tunnels that have been set up to maintain their established routes.

As well as our energy efficient buildings and systems, and our sustainable transport, the wider site includes new footpaths and cycle paths – all of which make it easy for people to get around sustainably and enjoy the open spaces.

IT & COMMUNICATIONS Designed to facilitate the easy exchange of ideas and collaborative working, IT and connectivity across the site is state-of-the-art. Video-conferencing and electronic whiteboards reduce travel time and costs and make sustainable conferencing possible. Dark fibre is available through an open source access arrangement, providing virtually unlimited bandwidth and flexibility. As this is already available at the Park, you have immediate access to the ultimate in network connectivity, reliability and scaleability.
