GOVERNMENTurged to lend a hand>> Drugs in different forms are on the increase in schools in the Greater Edendale

MEMBERSof the community under the Plessislaercluster community policing forum (CPF) haveurged government departments to lendahand in

drug awareness campaigns in local schools.This isduetothediscoveryof itemsthatarenotallowed

in schools, according to the CPF chairperson SfisoMavundla.

Schoolsarealsoencouragedto formsafetycommitteessothattheCPFmembers’jobwouldbeeasywhentheyvisitschools for awareness programmes.

In someof theschools in Imbali, the (CPF) teamdiscov-eredpacket of chips, popularly knownasgo-slow, that aresuspected to have been mixed with drugs.

AccordingtoMavundla,thepupilsbought,atethechipsand after that their behaviour changed. That is when wewere called into the school to attend to the matter.

“Thepupils bought the chips fromthewomenwhoareselling at the school. After eating the chips, they becamedizzy and that concerned the teachers. We checked thechipsanddiscoveredthat therewasafunnywhitepowderthat was sprinkled on the chips.

“We strongly believe that might have caused theirchange of behaviour. The women selling the chips at theschool said theywerenot aware that the chipsmighthavebeen dangerous”, said Mavundla.

He said they still do not knowwhat the white powderwas.

“There are other items that are slowly becoming atrend in schools. Pupils go to China shops and buy itemsfor bad purposes. In some of the schools, we discovereda charming potion called (isigqabo). This is usually usedby girls to seducemen.Wemade an investigation andwewere informed that they put that lotion on their eyebrowsand eyelashes to seduce boys.

“Once they lookatanymaleafterputtingonthat lotion,hebecomesattracted to them.That iswhat theyarebeingtoldwhen theybuy these items. Currently,weare fightingagainst therelationshipsbetweenteachersandpupilsbutits not possible if such things are found on the pupils.

“These items are sold at R10 and R5, whichever pricethat the pupils can afford. Another chocking find was asweet inadoll container,whichagain changed thebehav-iour of pupils in one of the primary schools in Imbali.

Pupilsate thesweetand theystartedhavinghallucina-tions,” said Mavundla.

EducationspokespersonMuziMahlambisaid theyap-preciate what the CPF is doing in schools, adding that asthe department, they also have structures in place to dealwith social ills in schools.

“We have Soul Buddies and other structures that dealwith different issues in the school.We are grateful for theworkthattheCPFisdoing,fightingagainsttheuseofdrugsin schools,” said Mahlambi.

POLICEhavewarned of an increasednumber of cases of car theft in thePietermaritzburgCBDandsurround-ingareas,citingnegligenceandsheercarelessness ofmotorists and vehicleowners.

Captain Thulani Zwane said thata number of car theft reported casesoccur without any forced entry. Itmakes it possible to believe that thesuspects are using a jamming deviceto jam the motor vehicle’s lockingsystemwhen the driver activates thealarm.

“The device is used to gain easyaccess into a car. To prevent suchcriminal activities, police are urgingmotorists to be careful. Make surethat all the doors and windows areproperly locked when you park yourcar.

“Do not leave your firearm in thecar glove compartment (cubbyhole)oranywhere inthecar.This isagainstthe law. Laptops and cameras shouldbe put in the boot of your car. Keepyourwindowsclosedwhendriving inthe city centre.

“Do not open your windows forhawkers along the road and at therobots. Keep the doors locked andwindows closed at all times,” he said.

Zwane advised drivers not to usea cellular phone unless it’s a hands-free kit.

“Always lockyourvaluables in thecar boot before departure and atnight, park in well-lit areas. Practicethe same prevention skills you applyin parking lots or garages at home.

“Storeyour luggageinthecarbootwhere it is out of sight. Do not leaveyour handbag or briefcase visible inthe car. Do not leave your keys in theignition. Always lock the doors andclosethewindowswhengettingoutofthe car. Remove detachable radiosand the radios face when getting outof the car. Try to fit an alarm and oranti-theft device in your car. Haveyour keys ready in your hand as youapproach your car, especially if theyare difficult to find in your handbag,”he said.

Speaking toEcho, founderAyan-da Dube said: “The unemploymentrate amongst youth is very high andthere are not enough jobs for every-one.Wewant to seemore andmoreyoungpeopleventuringintothehos-pitality industry.

“Our main focus will be particu-larlyon those fromdeepruralareas,as they are not as exposed to manyopportunities like other young peo-ple.Wewanttoequipthemwithnec-

essary skills within the industry sothey can make careers out of it.

“These skills include catering,waitering, financial management,eventsmanagementandalsogener-al life skills”.

Dube said that their long termgoal is to have their services used ingovernment hospitals, old agehomes, orphanagehomes and com-munity soup kitchens.

Theworkshopswillbeconductedfreeofcharge.Dubefurthercalledallthosewithin thehospitality industrywho have an interest, to come for-ward and share their knowledge.

Ambrosini told Parliament that he has beenusing dagga illegally after he was diagnosed withcancer of the lungs and pleaded that it be allowedto be used by cancer sufferers and other who needits medicinal properties. lamented an old man clad in an ANCT-shirt, in the taxi from Dambuza totown.

“Or is it because our ex-combat-ants are ravaged by poverty that wefind it hard to respect them?”

“YouseeBab’Zulu,”amiddle-agedman sitting next to the old manmused, “the dignity of MK veteranscan only be restored by educatingpeople about the pivotal role thatUmkhonto weSizwe played in theliberation struggle.”

“ThatisnotenoughVusi,”Bab’Zu-lusplutteredexasperatedly,“weneedto rid ourselves of this disgustingnonsensical tendency of marginalis-ing our soldiers in the organisation.The ANCmembers across the board,let alone the leadership, need to holdourex-guerillasinhighesteembeforewe could expect the mainstreamsocietytopayhomagetothem.Other-wise the imageof thewholeorganisa-tion would be - if not already -tarnished.”

This preceding dialogue gives usan abundant clarity on how people

feel about the predicament of MKveterans.

These freedom fighters are nowtreatedcontemptuously,evenbyANCleaderswhoaresupposedtobeexem-plary in terms of treating them withdignity. The ANC is now throngedwith ignoramuses who are notconversant with its literature, whichhasandcontinuestobreedanembar-rassing ignorance regarding MK.Doesn’t this explain why you wouldfind theveteransbeingpatronisedbythese opportunist newcomers whojoined the organisation after 1994when it was fashionable to do so?

WhentheANCreluctantlydecidedto formUmkhontowe Sizwe in 1961,due to the intransigence of the whiteregime to relinquish oppression, theaimwastoescalatethestruggleofthisveryANCtoliberatethiscountryfromthe ravages of apartheid.

But what is baffling and appallingis that these people who call them-selves loyal and disciplined ANCmembers are the ones who discount

MK veterans, acting as if the estab-lishment of MK was frivolous. Theveterans have become Cinderellas inthe organisation.

The branch is themost importantsphere of any political force, for it isclosest to the rank and file. I doubt ifall branch executive committees(BECs) of the ANC are well versed intermsof theorganisationin itsentire-ty.

In my personal experience, someBECs’ members know nothing aboutUmkhonto we Sizwe Military Veter-ansAssociation (MKMVA), and that itispartandparceloftheANC.TheANCneeds to take the issue of inductionseriously. What is needed for all newANC members is a properly struc-tured programme of induction andpolitical education at a branch level.

Thiswouldmake sure that peoplewho serve on these BECs are wellequipped in terms of understandingall the workings and components ofthe ANC. Isn’t it disgraceful being anardent ANC card-carrying member,

yet being diametrically in the darkwithrespect toMKMVAand its role inthe ANC? The ANC Moses Mabhidaregion was named after the commis-sar and chief political instructor ofMK, Moses Mabhida. But does theleadershipofthisregionreflectthatintheir dealings with MK veterans?

We hope that Senzo Mchunu, asthe new ANC chairperson in thisprovince, would recognise MKMVA.Does the ANC leadership rejoice fail-ing to honour their promises to assistMK veterans? I’m struggling tounderstandwhyMeshack Radebe asanANCleaderfailedtokeephisprom-ise of hiring military veterans toaddress the issue of rhino poaching.

When MK suspended the armedstrugglein1990,whichultimately ledto its disbandment in 1993, the ANCnever uttered a single word that theex-combatants had now becomeobsolete in its political life. Which iswhy youwould find the leadership ofMKMVA(establishedin1996)playinga crucial role in the ANC structures,

for instance, Kebby Maphatsoe, thenational chairperson of MKMVA, is amember of the national executivecommittee (NEC) of the ANC.

His KZN provincial counterpart,Themba Mavundla, is also instru-mental in the ANC in the province. Itshould also be noted that no one canpurport to be an MKMVA memberwithout being a loyal card-carryingmemberoftheANC -MKMVAderivesits existence fromtheANC.Thisgivesus a vivid demonstration thatMKMVA can never be divorced fromthe ANC.

During this time, we remember the lives ofmen and women like Nelson Mandela, JuliusNyerere, Malcom X, Steve Biko, MangalisoSobuko, Marcus Garvey, Queen Nyahbinghiand manymore who played a part in upliftinghumanity.

As Africans, we value our history andsee the great need to pass knowledge to theyoungergenerationsothatourhistorydoesnotget lost in time.

Asaresult, theuprisingeventscoordinatingcommittee, in association with the Universityof KZN’s School of Religion, Philosophy andClassics, is hosting a one-day workshop at theUniversity of Kwazulu-Natal to seal up BlackHistory Month on 28 February.

It falls under the country’ governingbodySafa. Thesoccerindoorleague,undertheSouth African Indoor Football Association(Saifa), is popularly called “Futsal” around theglobe and is currently taking SA by storm.

It’s fixtures are played all over the countryevery weekend.

What ismoreinteresting,andnotknownbymany, is that thechairmanofSaifa is local legalguru and long serving executive member ofSafa, Poobie Govindansamy.

Govindansamy this week told Echo that“Futsal” is very popular around theworld andfixtures are played twice a week.

He said soccer giants such as Spain, Brazil,Italy, Germany and others start by mouldingtheir players in the indoor leagues, beforegraduating to outdoor.

“I am glad that the mother body, Safa,agreed to start and to accommodate their newbaby Saifa, commonly called Futsal in soccercircles around the world.

“I amalso excited that our affiliates (teams)are coming from all the SA provinces. Otherprovinces are already becomingpowerhousesof Saifa.

“It is also interesting that therearea coupleofteamsfromtheCityOfChoicelikeMaritzburgHotspur and Young Natalians,” saidGovindansamy.

Another Pietermaritzurg-based adminis-trator, EbrahimHossen,who is Saifa’s generalsecretary, told Echo that the new look leaguereceived a shot in the arm andwas sponsoredby the 2010 Fifa World Cup Legacy Trust thathas provided R1.6 million.

But this requires additional sponsorshipthat will boost the growth of Futsal and createopportunities for all South Africans.The immediate aim of the league is to create-credible competitionand this canonly bedonebyhavingasustainableNationalFutsalLeagueacross the country.

“Wedon’t achievegoodresultson the inter-national scenebecausewelackedexperiencedplayers. We can only have such players if wehavea competitive league whichwecan selectour best players from,” said Hossen.

Currently, the league ismadeof120playerswhoareeligibleforselectiontorepresentSAonthe Futsal international scene.

“We are now following in the footsteps ofcountries such as Brazil and Spain.” he said.

HAVING scooped medals in theinternational wheelchair racingtournament that was held in CapeTown last week, chairperson ofRichmond Riders Club, MichaelLuthaka, says that disability doesnot mean inability.

The club, which deals with allissuesofpeople livingwithdisabili-ties through sports, broke recordsby coming back home with tenmedals - five gold, four bronze andone silver, beating participantsfrom different countries.

The club also made their markby participating in the NelsonMandelamarathon lastyear,whichwasopenedfor the first timetopeo-ple livingwith disabilities. Its otherprojects include skills develop-ment, computer training, craft anddeveloping all sporting codes forpeople living with disabilities.Speaking to Echo, Luthaka said:“This is a great achievement for us,especially since we had manychallengesprior tothetournament.Although we did not get enoughsupport, coming back with thesemedals is very encouraging.

“If you are livingwith a disabili-ty, it does not mean it is the end ofthe world. Living with a disability,does not mean that you are unableto do things.

“You can still do something thatthe whole world can be proud of. Itwas not easy as we competedagainst world champions.”

Most of SA coaches arenot training any playersIT is impossible to improveand progress without apply-ing yourself. Presently, thereisnotmuchtrainingandcom-petition happening in SouthAfrican football.There isverylittle action.

The country has alsoinvested huge amounts intraining football coaches. It isunfortunatethatmostofthesecoaches are not training anyplayers. Coaches can only getbetter through working withplayers daily.

We also have many otheruncertificated coaches thatonly talk about football. Theyhave a bit of knowledge andexperiencebutarenotwillingto educate the youth of thiscountry. They have lots ofopinions and ideas yet theyareunwilling to test their the-ories. We need to learn thatwishes, plans and promisesnever got anyone anywhere.

It is not possible to succeedwithout making sacrifices.Improvementsareonlypossi-ble when people act on theirgoals.

Are we a nation thatstrives for excellence?

It is interesting to listen tothe general public talkingabout our footballers.We callthem all kinds of negativethings. Are South Africansgenerally a hard workingpeople?Dowestrivefor100%or are we just content with a30%passmark?Dowegener-ally go beyond the call of dutyor expect more money forovertime?

Football is part of a coun-try’s culture. Football offi-cials, coaches, referees andplayers aremembers of com-munities. If a community iscorrupt or lazy, donot expecta different situation in foot-ball.

The sooner we learn thatthere are no free lunches inthis world, the better for thefutureofSouthAfrica.Ithastostart with parents and thosein leadership positions. Ourboys and girls need to be en-couraged tomake an effort todo their best in sports and ac-ademic work. The reality isthatyoungpeoplemodel theirparents and other adults.South Africa is rich withsporting talent thatneed tobecultivated. Presently, noSouth African footballer hasjoined the aristocrats of foot-ball in the European leagues.Wecontinuetofailgenerationafter generation. Let us havemore action and less talking.Unzima lo mthwalo!
