Good news for GRANTS>> Beneficiaries are happy that despite the economic downturn, the government has still increased their grants

NOMPENDULO NGUBANE>>[email protected]

ONE of the reasons people wereglued to their television setslast Wednesday was to hear

how much Finance Minister PravinGordhan would add to their pensionand child support grants.

As from April, pensioners willreceive R1350, foster care R830 andchild care grants will be R310.

A 64-year old pensioner, MavisMshengu, from Imbali Unit 2 andSlindile Nzimande from Ashdown, who depends on the child supportgrant, expressed their appreciationto Echo about the government’smove.

“I have always been grateful forthe pension that I receive from the

government. I have never paid toomuch attention to the amount and Ihaveneverhadareasontocomplain,”said Mshengu.

Both Mshengu and her husband,Wilson (68), are pensioners and boththeir pensions help out with the

groceries, which also support theirtwo unemployed grandchildren.

TheyspendlessthanR300onelec-tricity as they are the only ones livingin the house.

One can never insult governmentand complain, she said.

“Howcanone complain about themoney that we have never workedfor?Icanproudlysaythat I’mblessedto be a South African citizen with allthe benefits from the government.

“As an elder living in this country,I’mable tobuygrocerieseachmonth.

I have two grand children who de-pend on our help and we are able toprovide for them. We are grateful tothe government. Every cent we getcounts and it goes a long way,” saidMshengu.

Nzimandeagreed with Mshengu, saying she receives grants for threechildren which in April is a total ofR930.

“The money covers all the needsof the children. I pay their school feesand buy them food and clothes. Itdoesn’tonlytakecareofthechildren’sneeds, but it also helps with thegroceries that also cater for mysiblings in the house.

“I’m not complaining that onlyR10 was added. I’m grateful for theassistance that government isoffering,” said Nzimande.

Womenin drug trafficking

>> Recent statistics show that there are more women involved in drug smuggling

NOMPENDULO NGUBANE>>nompendulo.ngubane@myecho.co.za

ON 9 February 2014, awoman was arrested atKing Shaka International

afterbeingcaughtwith1,16kg’sofcocaine strapped to her body.

ThedrugswerevaluedatR450000, said Colonel JayNaicker, in areport from the police with thestatistics of the drug arrests thathavebeenmadein2013and2014.The statistics reveal the arrestsfrom the May 2013 to February2104.

Out of the ten drug arrests, sixof the suspects were women. MzoNxumalo of the SAPS OrganisedCrimeUnitsaysthereasonwomenare involved in drug smuggling isbecause they are less suspiciousthan men.

He says in some cases, their in-volvement is due to a love affairwith the drug lords.

“One would spend send timewith a woman, asking certainquestions which would show hermental state. It’s thesamewith thedrug dealers, once they have mettheir targetedwomentheywant to

useforsmugglingdrugs, theytrytofind out how the target thinks.Sometimesdrugsmugglingcomeswithprostitution.Awomanon thestreet would want to have a tasteofdrugsandthedealerswouldgivethem to her. They would give herasmuchasshewantsuntilshefails

to pay them.“That is when she starts the

businessofsmugglingdrugstodif-ferent countries. If thedeal isdoneinthatmanner, thatmeansthat it’spayback time for that woman. That’s how most women arehooked on drug smuggling.

“It’s easy money that doesn’tneed any qualification. To some,it’s extra cash that would fulfil thedesires of living a luxury lifestyle.

“AsIhavementioned, awomanis less suspicious than a man andthat works for the drug dealers. Asmile of awoman is different fromthat of a man. The way a womandresses is different from that of aman and that is how the drugdealers play their game of usingthese women as drug smugglers,”said Nxumalo.

According tohim, drugdealersknow that when they send awoman to smuggle drugs, thereare chances of her getting caught.

“They also know that there arechances that a woman won’t getcaught. My advice would be forwomen to stay away from drugs.People get arrested for smugglingdrugs and it’s always a harsh sen-tence,” said Nxumalo.

Some of the women, such asNobanda Nolubabalo and AliciaCoetzer, have been arrested inforeign countries, while othershave been arrested and impris-onedinSouthAfrica,suchasSher-yl Cwele, forhavingdrugmulesdothe smuggling for them.

Composting company gives back to Dambuza childrenHEATHER O’NEILL

THANKS to a generous donation by KZN composting company Farmyard Organics, the MayibuyeOneStopcentre’svegetablegardenhasundergonea much needed revamp.

It will now be able to supply fresh, organicallygrown vegetables to their soup kitchen, whichfeeds over 120 hungry local children every day.

Farmyard Organics donated 100 bags of theirpremium compost, and trays of new vegetablesfrom Sunshine Seedlings, to the MayibuyeOneStop centre in Dambuza.

The compost will be used to rejuvenate thelarge scale vegetable garden that supplies freshvegetables to the Dambuza soup kitchen at thecentre. The centre supports disadvantaged andvulnerable children in the community, throughspecialised welfare programmes run by The Childand Family Welfare Society of Pietermaritzburg.

The centre relies completely on donations fromthe public, as well as volunteers from the communi

ty to keep the centre running. They celebrated their10th birthday at the end of February, having provided soup daily to children since 2004.

“It is very difficult to keep projects like this onerunning as they rely on donations from the publicand companies. The compost and seedlings thatwe have been given will help the garden and soupkitchen to sustain itself for the next few months,”said Sithembiso Khumalo, project coordinator ofThe Child and Family Welfare Society.

Shepherd Kazunga from Farmyard Organicspraised his employer John Kidger for his generosity.“John is always finding ways to help organisationsthat work closely with the local community. Hethinks that it is important that we give back in anyway that they can,” said Kazunga.

The company was recently involved in anotherproject where brand new vegetable gardens werebuilt and vegetables planted at six schools aroundKZN.

Theprejudice ofmoney valueISRAEL MKHIZE ISRAEL MKHIZE

WHOEVER invented money trulyprejudiced the batter trade system of ‘the exchange of any valu

ables of value for value’.Money, which was valued in goldvalue

and equated to randvalue and visa versa, gold that is stored say, in the capital cityreserves of exchange, lost its life around1971 when currency was introduced by theNixon Administration in the USA.

Without getting deeper into this transition from money/gold value to money/currencyvalue, letshighlightthemostcritical casualties.

First, money became a victim by beingvolatile to price control of goods and service. This means that the value of moneyhad to chase after the play out of marketsunder macroeconomics price control.Whatever the seller in the market wouldpitch their prize on their goods and services, money would have to adjust its value

to catch up. The second victimisation ofmoney, as I have already alluded to above, was its conversion to currency value underformer president Nixon, facilitated by thecommerce sovereignty of the federal reserve.

As it is common knowledge, the federalreserve introduced the practice of printingmoney in proportion to how prices wereregulated by the ‘free market’. Inevitably, money value was no longer equated togold stored by fed or stock exchange, butby how the prices of gold were behavingin the market, thus money chased afterprices, hence we have what is called, in anutshell, inflation and inflation targeting. If the market raises the price of a good orservice, money loses its ‘current’ value andmust therefore, accordingly chase the incumbent price.

The same size bread we bought for R5now costs double that price, albeit thesame process of production.

The everillusive currency method ofmoney value, introduced us to secondaryillusiveness which are subresults ofchanging money from goldvalue to currency. These are, namely inflation, debtvalue or debt capital and interest. Interest, debt value and capital are the compensation of the difference between real moneyandcurrencyvaluemoney.Soinreality, one

they owe and how much they own. Thiscomplex and weblike entrapment of purchasevalue (money) in currency illusivesjustify the false cliché that “people liveabove their means”. What that basicallymeans is, currency complexity with its subtraps on interest and debtvalue /capitalwill surely keep everyone trapped on a spiral swing of not really knowing one’s valueof purchasing power. Living costs are rising. What is raising them if it is not the complexscam of currency and her ‘friends’. Hard issues that black people hardly take a second to ponder.

Equally so, on the race and class question, have we resolved as a nation whichis the main source of our catastrophe between the two?

Late former SA President Nelson Mandela resolved the race question, as somecontend, but what about the class question? Who is to resolve it?

As Nixon graduated the financial system from gold value to currency fluctuations, did he push forward the possibilityof inclusion for the peripherals?

Has the victory over race, as it were, solved the class question for the ‘previously underdog race’ or has it entrenched theminto further race currencytraps, which dueto its complexity, paralyse and frastratethe victims from attempting any analysis.

The underdog race, which is black incolour and African by continent, south bydemography, is lagging behind other racesby four grades; 1. Behind on goldmoney

value as we own no gold. 2. In currency valueaswedonotcontrolnorunderstandcurrency variation. 3. We are behind on therace masculinity discourse, becausewhether we as a black race like it or not,our race is lagging behind the entire humanrace as far as these critical things are concerned. Even when ‘our saviours’ do theirsaving rituals every four years, it looks likeother races beget the blessings. 4. Last andvery sad, we are still the underdog classand don’t understand the class war.

I have not tried to solve a problem, butinstead problematise whatever is deemeda solution, because truth is, our African society is trapped in the complexities of money and currency, race and class

Addressing problems of corruption and work ethic

FOOTBALL leaders need to take action inaddressing issues of violence and brutalityin football. A few weeks back, I saw a

referee being assaulted during the SABleague match.

A number of referees have beenassaulted during matches and yet no onehas been prosecuted. It seems that theyhave accepted this as a normal practice. The sooner people are taken to criminalcourts the better.

Safa also need to pay more attentionto the recruitment, training and remuneration of the men in black. The majority ofguys seem to be earning their living fromofficiating in football matches. This is also

a reason why sometimes a referee will officiate alone in a football match as thewhole amount is then not shared betweenthe three officials.

Issues of unemployment, poverty, andpure greed in some cases, lead a few of ourmatch officials to accept bribes. I think thisis not only a football problem. We havebecome a very corrupt society. Peoplewant to make lots of money without having to work hard. Clubs make it possible forthe corrupt referees to thrive.

Ifwefailtoaddressproblemsofcorrup

tion and poor work ethic, South Africanfootball will continue to struggle. We needto do correct things at individual level.Football needs to grow and move awayfrom traditional ways of operations. I findit abnormal that with all the latest technology, football associations are poor incommunication with their members.

Service delivery is the buzz word inSouth Africa. Sometimes, it looks like wedo not understand that we owe our breadto clubs and players. Elected officials andassociations’, or clubs’ employees, tend to

think that they are doing people favours.Let us show some maturity and give theservice that we can be happy with. Thesuccess of football in our country isdependent on the work of local footballassociation and districts.

It will be impossible for Danny Jordanto achieve Safa’s vision if people at lowerlevels do not act responsible.

Unzima lo mthwalo!

Sundowns totame AmaZulu>> Wounded Mamelodi Sundowns look to vent their anger against Amazulu

THE visitors on Sunday at 3pm atMoses Mabhida stadium, wound-ed Mamelodi Sundowns, might

take out their steamandvent their angeron AmaZulu.

ThePretoria basedBrazilians recent-ly lost two league games in a row.

A fortnight ago, Sundowns lost toOrlando Pirates 1-0 and last weekendwent down 3-1 against Bidvest Wits.Their recent results against the Milparkbased outfit did not only disappoint, butclearly showed that the Pretoria sidehead coach Pitso Mosimane was stillbattling to find a winning combination.Sundownsfollowerswatchedindisbeliefwhen Wits came from behind, from 1-0down, to become winners. Mosimaneblamed injuries for the defeat.

“It’s obvious that they were missingthe injured players. I am not making anexcuse, because there are a lot of playersin the team andwe should have won thegame. It simplymeansplayers thatweregiven a chance to play failed to deliver,”said Mosimane.

Sundowns are crippled by injuries to

captain Alje Schut, Cuthbert Malajila,Katlego Mashego and Khama Billiat, while Nhlopho Kekana was suspended.Someof the injuredplayers are expectedto go for a fitness test this week.Mosimane says their visit to Usuthu

won’t be an easy one.“We need to be very strong mentally.
