• THAT is service-learning!
8
Service Learning is:• An element in a course in order to achieve a
specific learning outcome • A form of teaching and learning method• About :

9
Service Learning Is Not:• An episodic volunteer program• An add-on to an existing university
curriculum• Logging a set number of community
service hours in order to graduate• Compensatory service assigned as a form
of punishment by the courts or by school administrators
• One-sided: benefiting only students or only the community

31
What are the barriers to e-SULAM?
• SULAM in a ‘traditional’ form already requires extra work on the part of lecturers to create community partnerships, support students in connecting with service opportunities, maintain communication with community partner, incorporate reflection and assessment, etc.
• Some lecturers who are highly committed to SULAM abandon their SULAM efforts when migrating to teaching online because they view the online medium as a barrier to SULAM.
