Making disciples of Jesus Christ for the Transformation of the World

On January 27 at 7pm, more than 40 people from our church sat together in the fellowship hall and considered the future and how God might be leading
us into it. I would like to share with all of you how proud I am to be the pastor of a church that is ready and willing to do the work of developing a vision; of laying a path marked with values and passions and needs...so that we can do what God is calling us to do for Him in this community. During the workshop we started a process that begins with naming the core values of our church and ends with us naming our vision; putting into words how we intend to fulfill our mission, which is to "Make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world." I am very excited to be a part of this process and I want to invite all of you to get involved as well; the more input we have as we move toward a vision statement the better the vision statement will be. Vision is so important to our future. Proverbs 29:18 says, "Where there is no vision, the people perish...," and later the Apostle Paul said to the Corinthian church, "...I do not run like a man running aimlessly; I do not fight like a man beating the air." Paul was talking about purpose; he was talking about the importance of having a vision; a process for accomplishing what God wanted him and the Corinthian church to accomplish.
Will you be a part of that work at Dyer UMC? Will you commit to helping us develop a vision so that we don't run aimlessly; so that we don't fight like a man beating the air; so that we can get on with our work of "Making disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world?" I hope you will.
Through Christ, Pastor Jim

take seriously the words of the One who tells us, ‘Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny
themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.’ (Luke 9:23)” ~ Mike Slaughter

1) Myth. High blood pressure runs in my family. There is nothing I can do. I will get it too.
High blood pressure can run in families. If your parents or close blood relatives have had high blood pressure, you are more likely to develop it, too. However, lifestyle choices have allowed many people with a family history of high blood pressure to avoid it themselves. Lifestyle changes you can make to prevent it include: Eat a heart-healthy diet, which includes limiting sodium to less than 1500 mg per day. Enjoy regular physical activity. Maintain a healthy weight. Manage stress. Avoid tobacco smoke. Comply with medication Prescriptions. If you drink, limit alcohol. 2) Myth. I don’t use table salt, so I’m in control of my sodium intake and my blood pressure isn’t affected.
In some people, sodium can increase blood pressure. But controlling sodium means more than just putting down the salt shaker. It also means checking labels, because up to 75% of the sodium we consume is hidden in processed foods like tomato sauce, soups, condiments, canned foods and prepared mixes. When buying prepared and prepack-aged foods, read the labels. Watch for the words "soda" and "sodium" and the symbol "Na" on labels; these words show that sodium compounds are present. 3) Myth. I use kosher or sea salt when I cook instead of regular table salt. They are low-sodium alternatives.
Chemically kosher salt and sea salt are the same as table salt – 40 percent sodium – and count the same toward total sodium consumption. Table salt is a combination of the two minerals sodium (Na) and chloride (Cl). Learn more about Sea Salt Vs. Table Salt.
4) Myth. I feel fine. I don’t have to worry about high blood pressure.
More about 78 million U.S. adults have high blood pressure – and many of them don’t know it or don’t experience typical symptoms. High blood pressure is serious. If uncontrolled, high blood pressure can lead to severe health problems. High blood pressure is also the No. 1 cause of stroke. 5) Myth. People with high blood pressure have nervousness, sweating, difficulty sleeping and their face becomes flushed. I don’t have those symptom so I must not have high blood pressure.
Many people have high blood pressure for years without knowing it. High blood pressure is often called "the silent killer" because it has no symptoms, so you may not be aware that it's damaging your arteries, heart and other organs. Don't make the mistake of assuming symptoms will alert you to the problem of high blood pressure. Everybody needs to know their blood pressure numbers. Diagnosis should only be made by a healthcare professional.
6) Myth. I read that wine is good for the heart, so I can drink as much of it as I want.
If you drink alcohol, including wine, do so in moderation. Heavy and regular use of alcohol can increase blood pressure dramatically. It can also cause heart failure, lead to stroke and produce irregular heartbeats. Too much alcohol can contribute to high triglycerides, cancer, obesity, alcoholism, suicide and accidents, and it can be highly addictive. If you drink, limit consumption to no more than two drinks per day for men and one drink per day for women. Generally, one drink equals a 12-ounce beer, a four-ounce glass of wine, 1.5 ounces of 80-proof liquor, or one ounce of hard liquor (100-proof). 7) Myth. I have high blood pressure and my doctor checks it for me so I don’t need to check it at home, too.
Because blood pressure can fluctuate, home monitoring and recording of blood pressure readings can provide your healthcare provider with valuable information to determine whether you really have high blood pressure and, if you do, whether your treatment plan is working. It's important to take the readings at the same time each day, such as morning and evening, or as your healthcare professional recommends. 8) Myth. I was diagnosed with high blood pressure and I have been maintaining lower readings, so I can stop taking my medication.
High blood pressure can be a lifelong disease. Follow your healthcare professional's recommendations careful-ly, even if it means taking medication every day for the rest of your life. By partnering with your healthcare team, you can successfully reach your treatment goals and en-joy the benefits of better health. Thank you to our church family for all of your prayers, cards, and kind words when Megan’s mom died. It was through many prayers that we were able to find peace. We know Megan’s mom is now in an incredible place with no more pain and she can once again breathe without any struggle. And after 31 long, lonely years, she is with Megan’s dad again. We are so blessed to have a church family that loves and cares for us the way you all do. Thanks again. A hard time was made bearable with your help. We love you!
Blessings, Pastor Jim, Megan, Jamie, Josie & Jenna
We really want to thank our church family for all that was done for our family when my Mom passed away. The prayers, cards, donations, food and support show us how much you care, and make Mom’s passing a little easier. Mom and Dad were both Christians and had great lives, so we understand God is taking care of them now!! Thanks again – God is Good.
Tom, Charlotte, Brian, Jamen & Andy Lane
Dear Church Family,
Thanks to all for your many prayers, cards and phone calls. Also, thanks Pastor Jim for your visit.

“Being a church that leaves the building.”
Note: Locations, days and times have changed.
This February will mark the sixth month that our Young Adults GO Group has been meeting. Over the past months, we have been able to grow relationships reaching outside of the church and build a friendship based around Christ. Not only are we able to dedicate every Wednesday to a bible study, but we are also able to create a friendship and form a unity, based on scripture and our faith in Christ. I believe these GO Groups allow us not only to grow deeper in faith, but to bring us to build new relationships. I love the idea that we are bringing Jesus outside the walls of Dyer United Methodist Church and into the area surrounding us. I am looking forward to the ways that God will lead our GO Group in the future. Courtney Myers
The GO Groups meet to pray, study the Bible and
discuss ways we can be in service to our community.
