received. The Statehood bill wasintroduced just after the ' ojcningof Congress hut withdrawn a fewdays for a revision under ihepersonal direction of the President, who was insisted by his AttorneyGeneral, Secretary of the . Interior,Chairman of the House Committeeon Territories, Hamilton and myself.Nothing important was altered, norwere any of the land appropriationschanged, but merely tho construc-tion and phrnzelogy of the bill waschanged. Salient points in tbcf ghttliis year arc these: It is strictlyan administration measure, being inthe platform of bolh parties, and ishandled solely by Chairman Hamil-

ton of the Territorial Committee ofthe House. Senator Dornh of Idaho, has the bill in charge at the Senateend and the only change he hasmade is in providing for' two voteson the adoption of the Constitution. The President is a Btrong advocateof the measure and his cabinet is

enthusiastic. The house is absolute-ly for the bill, it having been passedthere during several previous Con-

gresses, and an overwhelming ma-

jority of Senators favor statehoodfor the territories in the Seriate end.Truly, the bill's prospects werenever brighter and I am satisfied it

-- will be favorably decided upon, passed and signed this session. Thswill end the long drawn-ou- t fight

The.Lord said, "It la not good

Looks like business, dor.'t it?

..Deming Mining InttiesUVFrank Wyman has been sendi-

ng several weeks at Volcano camp, north of Steins Tim, where he re-

ports the finding of a large "amountof low grade silicious ore.

This camp has been a slow pro-

position for some time, owing to thefact that it has in the past cost$25 per ton to handle the stuff.

Now the Douglas smelters requireores for lining thi-i- r converters andthe low grade stuff can be handledat $3.25 per ton, which makes it pro-

fitable. Hence business will braceup a bit.

Mr. Wyman is at Victoria Campnear Gage working on that valuableproperty. The Helen group em-

braces seven claims, has over 5000tons of gold, silver and lead oreblocked out, and is developed to thewater level. Large bodies of oreshow at the water level, and it isplainly manifest that it extends farbelow.

This famous group has every indication of becoming one of thegreat mining properties of the South-

west.

Methodist Pastor Pounded.A large number of the members

of the Methodist church met lastnight at the church and went to the- -

parsonage and took it by storm. '

Each combatant did not fail tohave some of the very substantialthings of life under his arm.

Rev. W. E. Foulks who had beenin Deming for several days, was expected home last night but failed tocome, to the dissappointment oí i)(e'prjty, but Mrs. Foulks was equal totho occasion and the. party was of amost pleaaant nature. Las Crusescor. to El PasoJIearld.

TOAST TO DEMING."There is land of every land the pride,

B1ovh1 by Hearen o'er all the world bes Lie,Where brighter auna dispense serener light,

And milder moons emparadiae the night.0, thou wilt find howe'er thy footsteps roam,

This land thy country, and this place thy home."

SAME THING AROUND DEMING.And now comes the attorney general saying that March 8, 1910, is

the latest day on which smail holding claims can be filed. There are alarge number of small holdings in the vicinity of Socorro and the personswho are in possession of them have repeatedly been warned and urged toapply for title. Some have made the application, but many more have

not Just what action the government will take in regard to these latterafter March 3, remains to be seen. Judging from precedent, however, they will be compelled to vacate the lands they are now in possession ofand those lands will be thrown open to entry under the same conditionsand in the same manner as other public lands. Such action on part ofthe government might work apparent hardship upon certain persons whohave been too negligent, too perverse, or too selfish to acquire title tothe lands they hold, but they will have nobody but themselves to blameIf they are made to suffer for their folly. Socorro Qiieftain.

GIVE THE HOME PEOPLE FIRST CHANCE.The Graphic desires to highly commend the action of the

county commiítóioners in selling the court house bonds to a homeand we are very sure the people will approve this action. Otherand trust companies bid a little higher, but each one would requireof expense to perfect the proposition and get dirt to flying, while theDeming National bank will require nothing but the plain acceptance ofthe offer and the printing of the bonds which will be done by the bankitself. The "ifs" and "anda" of other bidders might require six monthsto perfect, but the home institution will get busy right away and put thecommissioners in shape to pay the orders as they come in.

MUCH OBLIGED.

To show that they appreciatedthe great honor that had come toone of their number and to theschools, a large class of high school

pupils; headed by SuperintendentDoderer, flaunting the colors ofblue, white and gold, paraded thestreets, drawing the victor in a two-wheel- ed

gig, giving the class yells

and otherwise showing the properschool spirit.

Murl bore the honors and worethe beautiful gold badge very mod

estly, but had to respond with a

ringing good speech the' second

time he passed up Gold avenue.Doming was right up in the front

row at Roawell. At the banquettendered the visiting delegates bythe senior class of the Roswell highschool, Murl was the only one ofthe visiting high school representa-tives who was honored with a place

on the program. He was also givena fine ride about the city and wasshown other marked favors. He

requested ine ukaphic to expresshis gratitude to all of those havingthe territorial contest in charge feethe many acts of courtesy shownhim.

In this connection the Graphicwants to call especial attention tothe very high grade of work done

in the Deming schools. In Superintendent Doderer we have a man ofsterling worth and unquestionedability. He is pushing forward all

.. the time, gaining one improvementafter another that bonefets our exl

Land Going Up.

It will not require half the timeto increase from one hundred million

of population to one hundred andfifty million that it did to increasefrom fifty to one hundred millions

ana that was done in thirty years,

says the Crocker News. The land

bargain counter U fast dissapcaring, and young men had best look outto get a foothold before all thereasonable price goods are sold out

One of our occasional writersmentions that he has been asked toadvise a farmer whether to sell ornot to sell a farm for which theowner has been offered two hundreddollars an acre. This farm is in

northern Illinois, and in answeringthe question our correspondent ap-

proaches the subject from the stand-

point of the earning power of thatparticular farm. Although ' the ad-

vice in the main is in the directiontowards selling out, it was not given

with that emphasis which the subjectcalls for, and it is one of the many

articles which we have not yet print-

ed. That any good tract of farmland as far west as Illinois can be soldatjtwo hundred dollars an acre is one

of the marvels of the century. The

farmer who has to confront the pro-

position or making a profitable in-

come on a sixty dollar an acre land

that is devoted to general farminghas all he can stand op to,

and the man who buys the best farmin the country at two hundred do-

llars an acre cannot undertake tofarm it with much hope of successalthough in the end the propertymay be cut up into small tracts ortown lots, and so wind up the transaction as a profitable investment

Land is appreciating in value be-

cause of the increase of population. In year of 1850, the available area

of this county was 2,995,772 squaremiles, and the population was 23,191,

876 people. In the year of 1908 theBureau of Commerce and Laborplaces the available area at 3,026,

689, square miles, and the estimatedpopulation is 87,189,392. Thirty

J nve years ago men on horse backdriving herds of cattle were able

Come to

to travel from the Rio Grande riverto the Canadian border without cross- -

ng a fence line, and today V on thesome trails a herd cannot be drivenfifty miles without meeting withfence Impediments. The millions ofpeople have come out west, and atthis period, we have arrived at theend of the free land, and it is only

here and there that land can be hadfor less than it Is worth, and he may

rest assured that during the nextfive years the times will arrive whenevery landless man will have to facethe purchase oi land on a basis asdangerous to him from the investor'sstandpoimtas the purchase of an

Illinois farm at two hundred dollarsan acre. It Is one .thing for theowner to have land values increaseunder his feet by reason of this in

crease in population. It representsthe profit of the pioneer who wason the ground first, but it is anotherthing tor the landless man to see

those values go up beyond his reachand beyond the times. The landarea is fixed, here and there a fewmore acres will be made available,

but the population .s increasing to-

wards the hundred and fifty million

mark, and land values will conformto that basis.
