The late Dr. W. E. Deming (1900 1993), was invited toJapan by JUSE in July 1950.

In appreciation of Dr. Demings generosity, the late Mr.Kenichi Koyanagi, managing director of JUSE, proposedusing it to fund a prize to commemorate Dr. Demingscontribution and friendship in a lasting way and to promote thecontinued development of quality control in Japan

A company or division of a company that wishes to apply for the JapanQuality Medal (applicant company hereafter) must submit Application Form

Proposal for the examination process (including a request for the unitsto be examined and days for examination).

Based on this proposal, the subcommittee determines the format for the on-site examination,

examination dates and examiners.

Using the Description of T QM Practices as a reference material for the examination, the examiners conduct the on-site examination.

T hen, the subcommittee reviews the results and, based on its review,the Deming Prize Committee Chairman consults with the DemingPrize Committee and determines either " passing " or " continuedexamination " .

Incidentally, the examination process is not open to the public.However, examination findings are complied and provided to theapplicant company.

Immediately after the Deming Prize Committee makes its decision,the medal-winning company is informed of the result.

T he name of the medal-winning company and the reasons for awarding it are released to the mass media and reported in theNippon Keizai Shinbun (Japan Economic Journal) in October.

T hey are also reported in the monthly magazines. "T otal QualityManagement " and " Engineers " , both published by the Union of Japanese Scientists and Engineers (JUSE).

T he Award Ceremony and the Winners Presentations are conductedin November.

When the applicant company receives a " continued examination " status, nothing whatsoever about the company, including its name, isannounced.
