Strasbourg ROSEMONT STUD
Rosemont Stud’s development
into one of Victoria’s premier
farms has taken another step
forward with the acquisition of
Group 2-winning two-year-old Strasbourg
(I Am Invincible) in partnership with
international powerhouse China Horse Club.
The Anthony Mithen and Nigel Austin-led
operation will stand the BRC Sires’ Produce
Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) winner on the Rosemont
Stud roster alongside Shamus Award (Snitzel),
Starspangledbanner (Choisir), Starcraft (Soviet
Star) and Nostradamus (Medaglia d’Oro) in
2020.

for an introductory fee of $11,000 (inc
GST), while a limited number of lifetime breeding rights ($22,000) are also
being offered in the rising four-year-old who was an eye-catching yearling
with a $750,000 price tag at the 2018 Inglis Australian Easter Sale.
“We are thrilled to introduce such a good looking and sharp two-
year-old son of I Am Invincible onto the roster,” Rosemont Stud general
manager of bloodstock Ryan McEvoy said yesterday.
“As a Group 2 winner, he’s the best performed juvenile by I Am
Invincible to go to stud in Victoria since Brazen Beau. In fact, he shares
the same two-year-old Timeform rating as the emerging Darley stallion.
“Strasbourg was an easy debut winner in the Max Lees Classic by
a big margin as a December two-year-old and then his juvenile season
culminated in winning a Sires in impressive fashion which led to Peter
Snowden declaring him an ‘elite talent’.”
Strasbourg’s convincing performance in the 900-metre Newcastle
feature race on December 2 saw him race solely at stakes level thereafter,
which included a fast-finishing second in the $500,000 Inglis Nursery (RL,
1000m) 13 days after his first start.
But it was the Queensland Winter Carnival last year when he took
out the Sires Produce Stakes, a race won previously by Zoustar (Northern
Meteor) and champion mare Melody Belle (Commands), that assured
him of a place on a stallion roster. On that occasion, he defeated Dubious
(Not A Single Doubt) who has also
been retired to stud this year.
He was also placed in The
Schweppervescence (registered
as T L Baillieu Handicap) (Gr 3,
1400m) at two and finished close
up behind fellow first season
sire, Coolmore’s high-profile The
Everest (1200m) winner Yes Yes
Yes (Rubick), in the Todman Stakes
(Gr 2, 1200m).
Strasbourg retired after
12 starts, with his three-year-
old season hampered by bone
bruising and other setbacks, and it
was then that an alliance between China Horse Club and Rosemont Stud
came to fruition.
“Hearing how good looking they are is one thing, actually seeing
the horse in the flesh is another. As soon as you see Strasbourg you will
be booking in. It’s that simple,” said China Horse Club chief operating
officer Michael Wallace, who played a key role in selecting Strasbourg as
a yearling.
“We buy a number of horses every year, yet this colt stands out as one
of the best types we’ve ever purchased.
“He’s by far the best looking son of I Am Invincible we’ve had
involvement in. Not only that, he’s the most precocious of his sons we’ve
had through the China Horse Club system given he was a dominant debut
winner and stakes performer as a pre-Christmas two-year-old.
“He’s got an ideal profile and genetic make-up to be a successful
stallion. We’re thrilled to partner with an emerging organisation in
Rosemont and excited to be supporting the stallion with a number of
China Horse Club mares.”
McEvoy confirmed that China Horse Club and Rosemont Stud would
commit a significant number of quality mares to Strasbourg in his early
years at stud.

“He can seriously let down this horse when in space. I really like him, in fact I’ve liked him from the moment he came into the stable. He’s an elite talent.” Trainer, Peter Snowden post Strasbourg winning the BRC Sires Produce Stakes Gr2.

“We see the partnership with China
Horse Club as fundamentally the beginning of a strong relationship going
forward,” McEvoy said.
“They will be supporting the stallion with a number of lovely mares
who will reside at Rosemont.”
Strasbourg is the second first season son of I Am Invincible (Invincible
Spirit) to head to stud in Victoria this year, with Group 3 winner I Am
Immortal standing at Swettenham Stud. His first Group 1-winning son
Brazen Beau spearheads Darley’s Victorian stallion roster and Overshare
has been well supported at Spendthrift Australia in his first two years.
“The Invincible Spirit sire line is clearly one of the most desirable in
world thoroughbred breeding today,” McEvoy said.
“When you look at Europe and horses like Kingman and Shalaa in
such high demand and the fact that I Am Invincible is a sensation down
here, one would think that ‘Vinny’ is going to leave a lasting impression as
a sire of sires over the next decade.”
Breeders who elect to purchase a lifetime breeding right in Strasbourg,
which carries two nominations for the first three years and one thereafter,
will also go into the running to win a business class trip for two to Europe
to visit the idyllic city in France which the colt is named after.
“The partnership put their heads together and came up with a rather
fun and exciting reward for one lucky investor who, importantly, can
determine their date of travel,” he said.
“It’s something a little unique and it’s another attraction to purchase
a breeding right at $22,000 in a stunning, Group-winning son of I Am
Invincible.
“I understand I Am Invincible breeding rights were sold initially at
$30,000 and have subsequently been traded publicly for almost $600,000
so, like all breeders, we live the dream and hope we can replicate a similar
phenomenon.”
The securing of Strasbourg is also part of Rosemont’s long-term
plan to invest in new commercial stallions to stand at the property near
Geelong to offer to Victorian and interstate breeders.
“We’re committed to strengthening the stallion roster over the course of the
next few years. That’s an area of the operation that we’re certainly keen to evolve,
however, we’re really pleased with the way it’s shaping up this year,” he said.
“We’re rapt with Shamus Award, particularly with what he’s achieved
in the past 12 months with so many Group winners, and he’s clearly
Snitzel’s most successful sire son.”
Rosemont barnmate Starspangledbanner is another stallion who
McEvoy believes continues to provide value to breeders.
He said: “Strasbourg has over six per cent stakes winners to runners
and has the ability to get a proper two-year-old. He sired the Inglis
Millennium winner this year and had the champion two-year-old filly in
the UK last year who won a Group 1.
“We feel they are of unbelievable value when you consider both
stallions are under $20,000 and have each sired Group 1 winners within
the past 12 months.”

Five for Rich EnuffWoodside Park resident Rich Enuff (Written
Tycoon) sired his fifth first-crop winner
yesterday when Patty’s Fortune (2 f ex Kalseru
by Octagonal) took out a QTIS two-year-
old maiden over 1050 metres at Doomben.
The Les Ross-trained filly defeated Winter
Rain (Rubick) by a comfortable margin of
three and three-quarter lengths with Chief
Mondo (Headwater) finishing a further half-
length away in third. Purchased by Mishani
Enterprises for $120,000 at the Magic Millions
Gold Coast March Yearling Sale from the
KBL Thoroughbreds draft, Patty’s Fortune is
one of two winners from three to race out of
Kalseru (Octagonal). Her grandam, Catriona
(Bellotto), is also responsible for Caniona
(Canny Lad) who herself is the dam of stakes
winner She Can Skate (Bradbury’s Luck).
Rich Enuff stands at Woodside for a fee of
$8,000 (inc GST) in 2020.
Five for I’m All The TalkPerth-based sire I’m All The Talk (Stratum)
landed his fifth winner yesterday when Madam
Torio (2 f ex Sorabatorio by Oratorio) trotted
home by five and three-quarter lengths in a
1000-metre two-year-old no-metro-win plate
at Belmont. Snipillicious (Snippertson) was
second with Iron Sharp (Written Tycoon)
another half-length away in third. Madam Torio
was purchased for $9,000 by her trainer Martin
Allan from the Mungrup Stud draft. She is the
only named foal out of unraced mare Sorbatorio
(Oratorio) who herself is half-sister to three-
time Group winner No Questions (Xaar) and
dual Listed scorer French Favorite (Favourite
Trick). I’m All The Talk’s fee for 2020 is currently
set at $7,700 (inc GST) but with Mungrup Stud
announcing their closure earlier this week, he
could be set to find a new home.
Playing God to join Darling ViewThe stallion roster at Darling View was
significantly bolstered yesterday when the stud
revealed that they will stand Group 1-winning
sire Playing God (Blackfriars). “This was simply
an opportunity too good to miss,” Darling View
tweeted to reveal the news that Playing God
would be joining their stallions Lucky Street
(Oratorio) and Patronize (Redoute’s Choice).
The sire of Kingston Town Classic (Gr 1, 1800m)
winner Kay Cee, Playing God previously stood
at Mungrup where he was champion WA first
season sire in 2017-18. He has produced 31
individual winners from 51 runners. A multiple
Group 1 winner himself, including back-to-
back wins in the Kingston Town Classic, his
other notable progeny include Group 3 winner
Lordhelpmerun and the Listed winning and
Group 1 placed Platoon. A fee has yet to be
announced.
Outback Barbie to back up Outback Barbie (Spirit Of Boom) has come
through her Stradbroke Handicap (Gr 1,
1400m) run well and will join stablemates
Shalwa (O’Reilly) and Krone (Eurozine) to
give Tony Gollan three runners in Saturday’s
Dane Ripper Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) at Eagle
Farm. Gollan has always rated Outback
Barbie a top stakes horse and likes her
chances. "Her run in the Stradbroke was very
good as she ended up in the wrong part of
the track," Gollan said. "She was only beaten
one and a half lengths and she was strong at
the finish. I have been pleased with her since
the Stradbroke and provided she continues
to please me she can run on Saturday. At the
set conditions she meets a lot of these horses
very nicely at the weights. After all, she has
won $1.4 million. This is her chance to put
the Eagle Farm hoodoo aside."
Tatt’s Cup at Waller’s mercyChampion trainer Chris Waller will be chasing
his 30th Queensland feature staying race win
with a strong hand at Eagle Farm. He trained
the first six across the line in the Chairman's
Handicap (Gr 3, 2000m) at Doomben two
weeks and could possibly do so again in the
Tattersall's Cup (Gr 3, 2400m) on Saturday.
Waller has seven acceptors in the race he won
with Index Linked (Dansili) in 2016. He has Le
Juge (Dansili), Shraaoh (Sea The Stars), Yulong
Prince (Gimmethegreenlight), Black On Gold
(Sebring), Brimham Rocks (Fastnet Rock),
Another Dollar (Ocean Park) and Savacool
(Savabeel) lining up, although Yulong Prince
has also accepted in the Winter Cup (Listed,
2400m) at Rosehill on Saturday.
Blinkers on Best Of DaysAfter finishing third in the Gosford Gold Cup
(Listed, 2000m), Group 1 winner Best Of Days
(Azamour) will wear blinkers and drop back
to 1600 metres in the Eagle Farm Mile (Gr 3,
1600m) on Saturday, and James Cummings is
hoping that will turn his form around. “We are
switching him back to a mile and putting the
blinkers back on,” Cummings told Racing.com.
“He’s trialled well since his solid performance
at Randwick four weeks ago. He’s weighted a
little better against these horses under these
conditions. We think that the shortened journey
with the blinkers gives him every chance of
returning to winning ways.”

Soldier Of Love after hat-trick
The Bjorn Baker-trained Soldier Of Love
(Mawingo) has continued stepping up this
preparation and will be aiming for a third-
straight city win when he runs in Saturday's De
Bortoli Wines Handicap (1800m) at Rosehill. "I
thought his win last start was excellent," Baker
said. "He's a no-nonsense horse. He just keeps
doing it. The 1800 should hopefully suit pretty
well. It is a bit of a jump from 1500 to 1800,
especially with the demanding tracks, but I
think he's well. His work has been very good
and he just keeps improving."
Invictus Prince a ‘project horse’Since finishing second to Winx (Street Cry) in
the Winx Stakes (registered as Warwick Stakes)
(Gr 1, 1400m) in 2018, the Matt Smith-trained
Invictus Prince (Dansili) lost his confidence
and form and it has since become the stable’s
project to get him to enjoy racing again. “He's
been a real project, he was in the wrong
headspace and just wasn’t a happy horse,’’
Smith told Racing NSW. “We wanted to get
a bit of confidence back in him and get his
head right and wanting to race again. You keep
analyzing what you’ve done right or wrong in
previous preparations, why he wouldn’t want
to jump, and go back to basics with him. He is a
thinker and you need to see them come out of
the gates and really want to be there. You never
know when a horse gets into the wrong frame of
mind what they are going to do.”
Sweet Thomas in good orderAfter finishing fourth in the Sydney Cup (Gr
1, 3200m) in April, Sweet Thomas (Dylan
Thomas) is set to line up as a $21 chance in
the Winter Cup at Rosehill on Saturday and
Matt Smith doesn’t think an upset is beyond
him. “I don’t know about him on the heavy
ground but he trialled well in it at Canterbury.
On his trial and his work he wouldn’t be too
far off these horses with the light-weight,’’
he told Racing NSW. “His work was great on
Tuesday, I can’t fault him, he’s really working
well and it just comes down to the conditions
and if he handles the track.’’
Pride Of Dubai filly on comeback trailTwo-year-old debut winner Sense Of Honour
(Pride Of Dubai) will make her racetrack return
in the Sheamus Mills Bloodstock Handicap
(1200m) at Moonee Valley on Saturday, her
first start since her win in January. “After she
won on debut, she pulled up immediately
with Capsulitis (inflamed ligaments around
the joint) so we just chose to spell her and
her fetlocks have been perfect,’’ her co-trainer
Mick Price told Racing.com yesterday. “She’s
a sound filly and she will run well. She went
out to Sandown this morning for a gallop with
(stablemate) Jabali Ridge and there wasn’t
much between them. She’s sailed through her
prep. She’s had a couple of trials and been good
in trials and the only thing that will beat her
is race fitness and whether the tempo will be
right.”
Rothfire second-favourite for RoseJJ Atkins (Gr 1, 1400m) winner Rothfire
(Rothesay) has been made the $8 second-
favourite for the Golden Rose Stakes (Gr 1,
1400m) after trainer Robert Heathcote paid
the $2,500 late entry fee for the gelding.
Rothfire has won six of his seven career starts
with his only defeat coming in the QTIS Jewel
2YO (1200m) at the Gold Coast in March. He
showed he would have no problems with the
1400-metre trip by running a course record to
claim the JJ Atkins. Rothfire is likely to have his
first Sydney start in the Run To The Rose (Gr
2, 1200m) on September 12. Favourite for the
Golden Rose Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m), which takes
place at Rosehill on September 26 is the Golden
Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Farnan
(Not A Single Doubt) at $6.
Sixgun impresses at CanterburyTwo-year-old colt Sixgun (Snitzel) raced to
an impressive debut win on a heavy track at
Canterbury yesterday beating six rivals including
Winx's half-sister Covent Garden (Exceed And
Excel). Trained by Mark Newnham, Sixgun beat
Camerlengo (More Than Ready) by three-quarters
of a length with a gap of more than four lengths
back to Rocketing By (So You Think) in third.
Covent Garden finished sixth of the seven runners
in the 1100-metre maiden. Sixgun is the younger
brother of Arrowfield Sprint Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m)
winner Splintex and a half-brother to the Group-
placed mare Invictus Salute (Exceed And Excel).
"He's probably a bit more physically developed
than Splintex at the same stage but he's got a few
wayward traits that Splintex didn't have," Newnham
told Sky Thoroughbred Central. "We've had to iron
that out with a few trials and a change of gear. After
his last trial we've put the cross-over noseband on
him and that seems to have worked well."
Stackhouse celebrates Sale win
In-form jockey Daniel Stackhouse had a little
extra reason to smile after So Let's Toast's (So
You Think) victory in a two-year-old race at Sale.
The colt is part-owned by his mother Vicki and
yesterday's win in the 1105-metre maiden may be
the start of bigger things for the colt who is trained
at Mornington by John McArdle, and thought to
have the potential to be competitive in the spring.
"I've always liked this horse and have had a lot of
time for him," Stackhouse told Racing.com. "I got
my mum interested in him, so it's great to get a
result for her especially." So Let's Toast's win gave
Stackhouse his 115th Victorian winner for the
season, moving him to within two of leader Jye
McNeil in the premiership race.

Tracy May relishes Queensland moveWell-bred filly Tracy May (Redoute’s Choice) led
all the way to win a maiden at Doomben on her
first start for Tony Gollan yesterday. The filly is out
of the Encosta De Lago (Fairy King) mare Madam
Tracy, a half-sister to the 2009-10 Australian
Horse of the Year, Typhoon Tracy (Red Ransom).
She was knocked down to Queensland's biggest
owner Linda Huddy for $650,000 at the 2018
Magic Million Gold Coast Yearling Sale. Gollan
said it had been important to get a metropolitan
win for Tracy May, who did her early racing for
Chris Waller in Sydney. "Her entire page in the
sales catalogue is black type so she is already a
valuable broodmare," he said. "We will look for
something a bit better now."
Spell for StockmanProgressive three-year-old Stockman
(Tavistock) has earned a well-deserved break
after stringing together three successive
victories. The Joe Pride-trained gelding defeated
older horses when successful over 2130 metres
on Monday and races in the colours of Jamie
Walter’s Proven Thoroughbreds. “He is a really
nice horse and it is the manner in which he is
winning that is pleasing,” Pride told Sky Sports
Radio. “It is one thing for a horse to win a
staying race, especially on wet tracks sitting up
on speed and grinding out a win, but the way
he is doing it coming from back in the field and
making long searching runs without anything
to take him into the race, they’re the qualities
of a very good horse in the making. He is going
to go to the paddock now. He is actually going
to go to Queensland and winter up there.”
Godolphin’s Esperance tops Inglis Digital auctionThe first Godolphin draft to be offered online
has highlighted another multi-million dollar
Inglis Digital sale, with the 17-strong offering
realising a $909,000 gross at an average of
$53,471. The top lot of the sale came from
the Godolphin draft with last start Rosehill
winner Esperance (Bernardini), purchased by
Hong Kong-based A Value Consulting Limited
for $175,000. “Esperance was bought for a
client who is keen to race him at the top level
in Macau, where we expect him to be a very
competitive sprinter and Danny Wong is the
trainer we have in mind,” A Value Consulting
Limited’s director Dr. Alan Lee said. “A Value
Consulting Limited has bought a number of
horses off Inglis Digital – including Earth Song
in the May catalogue – it’s a very good platform
for all trainers and horse owners and you know
the price will be fair to all parties.”
Werribee to host ‘one-way ticket’ internationalsIt was yesterday confirmed the horses on a ‘one-
way-ticket’ to Australia will be allowed to compete
during this year’s spring but a decision has yet
to be made on internationally trained horses.
“We have agreed to open Werribee this year to
what we call one-way ticket (horses). That’s for
horses that are trained in Europe but owned by
Australians that want to come and compete in
the Spring Carnival or, horses that are purchased
in the coming months by Australian connections
and want to bring them down,” Racing Victoria's
general manager international and racing
operations Paul Bloodworth told Racing.com.
“We call them one-way tickets because they come
and do their quarantine at Werribee and then they
go to the local stable. So we are opening Werribee,
and so we will have an influx of overseas horses
into Melbourne to compete during the spring,
but as it stands, those horses will have to go to
Australian trainers.”
Vic country cups programme imminentVictoria’s country racing chief Scott Whiteman
is confident all 27 country cups will go ahead
this year with the program set to be released
tomorrow. “Obviously we will have to heed the
advice of the government and Racing Victoria
but, at this point in time, the vast majority of
cups should be able to be run,” Whiteman told
RSN Central. “Some of them are very strong
community cups that race once a year and if
they can’t have crowds of substance then some
of them won’t be on, but right here, right now,
we remain optimistic that we can have crowds
of some size and therefore we intend to put
those dates in and monitor that situation over
the next short period of time. They (country
cups) hold some of those communities
together. It is absolutely vital that we be able to
conduct those if at all possible. The community
cups out there are so important to the fabric of
racing and those towns. At this point in time we
are going to continue on as normal. We have to
work with the government and Racing Victoria,
who control the dates.”
Hyeronimus and Paine case adjournedA scheduled hearing into charges issued against
Group 1-winning jockey Adam Hyeronimus
and stablehand Blake Paine has been
adjourned. Hyeronimus was issued multiple
charges by stewards relating to alleged betting
infringements and a hearing was scheduled
to begin today. "Racing NSW Stewards have
acceded to a request from solicitors to adjourn
the hearing to allow the author of an expert
report served on Racing NSW yesterday
evening to attend the hearing and to consider
associated minor amendments to the charges
issued," a Racing NSW release yesterday said.
A new hearing date is expected to be set today.
Newitt still non-committal over Melbourne move
Craig Newitt is still to decide where his
long-term riding future lies after making an
impression on his return to Victoria. Newitt
has been well supported by local trainers since
returning after Tasmania’s racing was put on
hold, but with racing in Tasmania set to resume
on Sunday, Newitt faces a tough decision. “I’ve
got no set plans. I’m just taking it week-by-week
at the moment,” the veteran rider told Racing.
com. “I’m here until the end of the month, no
question. And then I’ve got to go back, but for
how long, I don’t know. Hopefully I will be back
here full-time. But everyone asks me and I can’t
give them a definite answer.”

Further setback for BrownDual Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m)-winning
rider Corey Brown is set to miss the rest of
2020 following a setback in his return from the
injuries he suffered in a fall in the Queensland
Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) in June last year. Brown
was left with two plates and eight screws
holding together his spine after fracturing his
T7 vertebra as well as suffering fractured ribs,
a cracked sternum and punctured lung. “After
seeing my spinal surgeon today, he feels that my
spine has not progressed enough to operate just
yet,” Brown wrote on Instagram. “Unfortunately
the shattered bones are not joining together as
we had hoped, so we will have to wait another
three months before attempting surgery. If we
were to operate now and take out the screws
and plate, the surgeon feels my spine could
collapse in the area of the T7. I hope I will be
able to return to trackwork and fitness work
in January next year but we'll just have to wait
and see. Thanks to everyone for the love and
support.”
Scorse hospitalisedApprentice Patrick Scorse, the son of Group
1-winning jockey and Sky Racing personality
John, is undergoing treatment in hospital after
being forced to depart Corowa races with severe
abdominal pain on Tuesday. Scorse become
ill in the enclosure after finishing fourth in
the last race on the card. He was said to be
suffering pain in the abdominal area and had
to be transported to hospital for observation
with a CT scan coming up inconclusive. Scorse
has been one of the leading apprentices in
the ACT and Southern NSW in recent seasons
and has ridden 16 winners during the current
campaign.
Mayor Bedggood stands downCressfield Stud general manager Wayne
Bedggood has resigned as Upper Hunter
Shire mayor. Bedggood, who was elected
to council in 2012, served as Upper Hunter
mayor from April 2015. “Wayne was a brilliant
mayor and he has become a close friend
of mine,” deputy mayor Maurice Collison
said. “We worked well together and always
strived to do our best for the community and
residents. He was a passionate, hard-working
mayor, practical and straight to the point. I
thank him very much for his support to me
as deputy mayor, over the last five years.
Wayne Bedggood will be much missed as a
mayor and a councillor. My friendship with
him will continue.” Bedggood tendered his
resignation on Tuesday.
Hawkesbury chairman retiresHawkesbury Race Club chairman Ken Quigley
has retired from his role as chairman of the club
and as a director of the HRC board. Quigley has
been a director of the board of Hawkesbury Race
Club since 1992 and has served as chairman
for the past five years. Under his leadership,
the club’s facilities underwent extensive
refurbishment, including the installation of a
Polytrack.
“I would like to acknowledge and thank the
support that was given to me by the members
of the Hawkesbury Race Club over the past 28
years of representing them," he told Racing
NSW.
Ryan Shinn joins Kennewell RacingRyan Shinn, the brother of prominent jockey
Blake, has been appointed as Melbourne
trainer Lloyd Kennewell’s racing manager.
Shinn, who was a member of the Virgin
Australia cabin crew before the onset of the
Covid-19 pandemic, has relocated to Victoria
to take up the role. "An opportunity came
knocking where Lloyd was very keen to get
someone to help him doing a managerial role
and take some of the load and responsibility
that is required in a cut throat business,"
Shinn said. Group 1-winning trainer
Kennewell said: "Ryan has settled in like a
part of the furniture in recent days and I can
see him being here and growing with our
business for a number years to come.”
NEW ZEALAND
Spring in the air for RogersonTeam Rogerson were out in force at the Te Rapa
trials on Tuesday with 48 representatives and
a number of their runners have the Hamilton
trio excited heading into the new season. The
training partnership of Graeme Rogerson, his
wife Debbie, and granddaughter Bailey, were
able to keep a few of their team in work at
their Tuhikaramea private training property
over the Covid-19 enforced lockdown period,
which was reflected by their large contingent
on Tuesday.
“We were one of the lucky ones, we kept quite
a few going,” Graeme Rogerson said. “Quite a
lot of them trialled on Tuesday. They are pretty
fit.” Tavirock (Tavistock) carried the yellow
and black silks of part-owners Brendan and
Jo Lindsay to an easy three-quarter length
victory in his 850-metre heat and Rogerson is
eyeing some lofty targets in the spring with the
unraced colt. “I think he has the makings of a
really good horse,” he said. “His aim is the 2,000
Guineas.”
Ormsby back in the saddle
Group 1-winning jockey Chad Ormsby is
making a comeback to the saddle, some eight
years after he last rode on raceday. Ormsby,
who hopes to resume his career at Pukekohe
on Saturday week, was among New Zealand's
most respected jockeys when he made the
shock move to quit the saddle in 2012 to train.
"Every jockey wants to be winning big races
and I'd love to be out there competing at that
level again," Ormsby said. "With NZTR raising
weights, it planted the seed that maybe I could
come back. I know the extra kilo isn't going to
last long but it's enough to entice me to have a
go. I don't expect I'll ride at anything less than
57.5 kilos but there's an opportunity there
and I’m working full-time with my own team
of horses so that will assist with managing my
weight.”

Extra horse ambulance added to fleetAn extra horse ambulance has been delivered to
Auckland in the hope that there will now be one
for every meeting in New Zealand by the end of
the year. The ambulance was delivered by Otago
equine veterinarian, Dr Peter Gillespie, and
was manufactured at TL MacLean’s Dunedin
workshop. Gillespie and his colleague, Dr Bill
Bishop, came up with the idea of a national horse
ambulance service eight years ago and Gillespie
acknowledges the hard work and determination
of NZHAT Trust chair Martin Burns to help make
it happen. “It’s incredibly satisfying to personally
deliver the sixth horse ambulance to Auckland,”
Gillespie said. “We’ve planned a few stops along
the way to demonstrate its capabilities and to
formally acknowledge the generous support of
our sponsors. The majority of the cost of the sixth
horse ambulance was funded by a significant
grant from the NZ Community Trust.”

Williams’ Irish team readying for Melbourne returnEarly season form in Ireland will determine
the strength and number of horses six-time
Melbourne Cup-winning owner Lloyd Williams
has in Victoria for the spring. Williams' son Nick
said the ownership group could have four or
five of their Irish-trained horses in Melbourne
for spring assignments, joining their local
team prepared by Danny O'Brien and Anthony
Freedman. Joseph O'Brien has a number of
the Williams-owned horses about to kick off
their campaigns in Ireland, with some well
known to Australian punters including Yucatan
(Galileo), Master Of Reality (Frankel) and
Latrobe (Camelot). With racing having recently
returned in Ireland, Williams said form, and
injuries, would determine the make-up of the
team. "It's been a difficult season they've had,"
Williams told RSN. "They're just starting off now
so the races are all a bit crowded together. It's
an interesting time there and it will probably
take a month or so to sort the form out and work
out where we're going."
Sheikh Fahad swoops to buy Norfolk Stakes hope The Lir JetSheikh Fahad Al Thani has moved to keep his
summer run of success going at Royal Ascot
next week by purchasing live Norfolk Stakes (Gr
2, 5f) contender The Lir Jet (Prince Of Lir).
The juvenile broke the all-aged track record at
Yarmouth when scoring on his debut over 5f
last week when he carried the colours of trainer
Michael Bell's son Nick. The purchase will make
a tidy profit for assistant Nick, who acquired
the colt privately after he was sold to breeze-
up consignor Robson Aguiar for just £8,000 at
the Goffs UK Premier Sales at Doncaster last
August.

Following several months of
discussions, road show meetings,
select committee submissions,
a government bail-out, Racing
Board “adjustments” and track closure
announcements, the latest revised New
Zealand Racing Industry Bill is much closer to
its second reading and appears to reflect some
of the concerns raised by the industry and its
participants.
It seems a long time since John Messara
completed his report, suggesting wholesale
changes to the industry if it were to survive.
Messara was the exclamation point when
making the final submission to the select
committee in March. The first iteration of the
Racing Industry Bill failed to include significant
parts of Messara’s bold but necessary plan.
Comprising 124 clauses plus five schedules
and running to more than 100 pages, the
original bill has been revised in more than 30
general areas which indicates that the select
committee has listened to the industry.
Code representation, intellectual property
rights, track closures and betting via an offshore
agency were some of the points raised during
the roadshow.
Code RepresentationJanuary saw multi-location meetings
throughout the country discussing the first
version of the bill. Within the thoroughbred code
there were major concerns regarding the bill’s
apparent shut-out of the very people who know
most about the business. However, version two
looks to have addressed that concern.
As recommended by Messara, the
three codes (thoroughbreds, harness and
greyhounds) will now each make their own
appointment, making up three of the seven
member board which is due to be re-named
“Racing New Zealand” when the bill becomes
law.

Revised New Zealand racingindustry bill reflects concerns
Intellectual Property RightsIntellectual property rights are now to be
owned by the codes, whereas the original bill
had the TAB owning exclusive rights within
New Zealand and Australia.
This topic went against the Messara
Report recommendations and the revision has
removed that clause on the grounds that as a
commercial matter IP should be determined
by agreements between the TAB and the codes.
Track ClosuresTrack closures, several of which were
announced recently, have been the most
discussed points in the Messara Report. The
revision finds that a club surrendering its venue
to the code could, in some cases, be unjust and
therefore proposes requiring the minister to
consider special circumstances.
These may include venue ownership;
how the code intends to use the venue once
transferred; whether the venue is a training
facility and wider community use.
The minister will now appoint a reviewer to
carry out investigations, seek submissions and
apply the considerations before recommending
which action to take.
The revised bill also provides an appeal
process to clubs whose venues are deemed
“surplus” by the code, allowing them to take
their case to the High Court if in dispute with
the code.
Given its potential value, the closure of the
Avondale track is going to be very interesting.
Offshore BettingPeople who bet with offshore agencies and
agencies that take bets on New Zealand racing
“must pay charges in New Zealand relating to
their betting operations.”
The original bill had operators seeking
permission from the Department of Internal
Affairs. However, as the IP will now be owned by
the codes, it becomes a commercial arrangement
and negotiations must be with the relevant code.
The House of Representatives has yet to vote
on the bill. If the vote is successful the bill then
goes to committee, a third and final reading, a
final debate then the final vote. If passed, it can
then be signed into law and becomes an Act.

& Damreel (AUS), last.
Analysis: The Mark Newnham-trained colt Sixgun, a full-brother to Group
2 winning sprinter Slintex, staged a very promising effort in winning here on
debut. He went back from his outside barrier (7) and settled in second-last place
and was still conceding the leader about seven lengths nearing the home turn.
He then responded to Robbie Dolan’s riding, sprinted smartly from the 200m
and then finished far too well to score a very good win. The Gai Waterhouse
and Adrian Bott-trained colt Camerlengo, who was the favourite on debut,
began quickly from his inside barrier (1) and went straight to the front. He then
set a good tempo on the rain-affected track, only fading in the closing stages for
second after running a bold race. The half-sister to champion Winx (Street Cry),
Covent Garden, who was also racing on debut, travelled quite well in fourth
place on the rails but was under pressure coming to the turn and just battled in
the Heavy 9 conditions to finish (6.9 lengths) sixth. [KB]
