End of Year for Year 12

The end of school life for Year 12 students is approaching very quickly. The first four

weeks of this term are classes as normal with many assignments and exams for the

applied subjects occurring in week 4. External exams for the general subjects take

place in week 5 and only students completing external exams attend.

However, the library will be open to Year 12s who are still finishing certificate

courses. They can sign in at the office and work independently in the library across

weeks 5 and 6 to complete their courses.

The Valedictory Dinner is being held at the Pit Pony Tavern on Thursday 11th

November with the Graduation Ceremony on the morning of Friday 19th November.

Year 10

This year we have adjusted the Year 10 curriculum so they can complete their

studies and assessment in Week 4 of Term 4. For the remainder of the term,

students will move across and begin working on their Year 11 subjects. This gives

students a four-week head start into Year 11 Unit 1 topics. During SET Planning the

Year 10 students selected their senior subjects. From week 5, they move into their

senior subjects and join with the Year 11 students who begin their Year 12 units.

Parent and Community Code of Conduct

The Department has recently launched a public awareness campaign that addresses

occupational violence and aggression in state schools. While the majority of

interactions with parents and members of the community are respectful and

courteous, the department has a simple message: Your child, our student. One

Team. By school and home respectfully working together, we can achieve the best

outcomes for each child.

To support schools to be safe and respectful places, a Parent and Community Code

of Conduct has been developed to sit alongside the Student Code of Conduct and

the Code of Conduct for Queensland Public Service.

Page 2: Date Claimers Principal s Perspective

The Parent and Community Code of Conduct aims to

support schools to clearly communicate the conduct

expected of parents, carers and visitors while they’re on

state school grounds, at school activities, and interacting

with others in the school community.

A copy of the code is displayed in the foyer and is attached

to this newsletter.

Attendance

As the Year 12’s and then Yr 10’s and 11’s begin to finish

school, it is important that students attend school each day

until their finish date. Attending through to the final date is

important as learning is occurring up to the last day. In

week 10, we will have an alternate program but it will still

contain teamwork and resilience learning activities.

Ms Hannah Johnson, the Youth Engagement Officer, is

working with students to support them to attend each day.

Also following up on unexplained absences is another key

role Hannah completes. As students must be at school

each day (unless they are ill or a necessary appointment),

missed days must be explained. All absences must be

accounted for. The easiest way to do this is to reply to the

ID Attend text message to advise of your child’s absence.

Miners Memorial It was very moving to see a large contingent of school

students and town folk honouring the memory of miners

who had lost their lives in the State Mine disaster on the

13th October, 1954. The tributes, songs, poems and

prayers all worked to teach our young people the price

people have paid in our community and the need to come

home to family safely each day.

Santos Science Experience

During the holidays, 21st to the

23rd September Cooper

Groocock and Tallyn Broderick,

participated in the Santos

Science Experience at the CQ

University Campus, Townsville.

The program gave them an insite

into forensic science, coding,

robotics, nursing, paramedics as

well as working with Engineers

at the Energy Queenslands

Innovation hub to solve a

community problem.

Cooper -

“I really enjoyed the Santos Science Experience and

moving around the university campus. It gave me a good

idea of what career choices I might make in the future. The

excursion around the university campus was very

interesting and a good experience.”

Tallyn -

“Everyone was really nice at the Santos Science

Experience. I enjoyed learning about Nursing and how

much waste is produced. The university campus

experience was very interesting. The buildings were very

modern and nice and there was a huge spinning door that I

have never seen before”

As a part of Collinsville State High School’s whole

school approach to Social and Emotional Wellbeing,

students have engaged in the TRAIC funded

Resilience Project. Today Year 7 had a visit from The

Resilience Project Representatives from Evolution

Mining and North Queensland Cowboys

representative Gavin Cooper. Aside from being a little

star struck, the students enjoyed completing activities

focusing on three key pillars proven to cultivate

positive emotion; Gratitude, Empathy and Mindfulness

(GEM) with our special guests. The gratitude walk

and random notes were a real hit as was the whole

school cricket match.
