From The Principal Regional Director and Assistant Regional Director Visit Tracy Corsbie (Regional Director) and Paul Williamson (Assistant Regional Director) visited our school last Thursday meeting with our leadership group and visiting classrooms. They spoke with students and were very impressed with what they observed and the standard of writing our students produced. It was great to have an independent/critical set of eyes to cast over our school processes and receive an overwhelming thumbs up that we are not only on the right track but achieving outstanding results in what we are doing. Country Fair Fireworks Sponsor Sought The Maleny State School Country Fair is the highlight of the School's social calendar and an annual highlight for the Maleny and broader community; it is attended by over a thousand staff, students, parents, friends and community members. The Fair is the major fundraising event for the School P&C but it is only successful because of the generous support that we receive from scores of local businesses, from both Maleny and across the Coast. The highlight of the Country Fair is undoubtedly the Country Fair Fireworks and this year, the opportunity remains for a sponsor to have their name 'go up in lights' in supporting these fireworks; fireworks that ‘crown’ the Country Fair, making it such a memorable event. BFG Movie Thanks to the generous sponsorship again of Maleny Apex with the support of the Maleny Film Society and Celebration of Books Maleny, our P&C hosted a very successful matinee screening of tne BFG on Saturday. On behalf of our whole school community I would like to thank all P&C volunteers and parents that coordinated this event, assisted on the day or cooked food items. A big thank you to all families that supported this now yearly event. Arrive on Time and Ready to Learn It is essential that students arrive at school on time and have time to organise themselves for the day. Students arriving late are required to obtain a late slip from the office before moving to class. When students arrive late they more often than not miss crucial information at the start of the day and often find it difficult to settle in quickly. With only one administration officer this also blocks our office delaying parents/clients who are required to wait for late students to be processed before they are served. This unnecessarily puts staff under presssure at one of the busiest times of the day. Parrents can support students by:

Making sure your children get a good nights sleep

Give them a nutritious breakfast and food for lunch to fuel their brain

Teach them to organise and pack what they need for school

Have a regular morning routine and get up early enough to get dressed in full school uniform, have a good

breakfast, brush hair, clean teeth, get organised and out the door

Attendance – for all absences call the absentee line 54998366 or email [email protected]. Maleny’s Attendance Goal- 95 % Current Attendance Rate Sem 1 92.8 % Every day counts please support us by having your children at school every day they will be the ones that benefit in the long run.

Winter Uniforms Our kids look outstanding in their uniforms - Thank you. Well done to parents who have purchased a school hat, black shoes, white socks and a school jacket or plain navy jumper for their children. It is getting cold and will continue to be that way for some time. I am proud of our school and my expectation is that parents show they are as well by ensuring their children wear the correct uniform every day. If finances are an issue please don’t hesitate to call me as I am very willing to assist you. The best way to stay warm on our coldest days is to wear layers. Jeans are not part of our uniform and should not be worn. Congratulations to the huge majority of parents that send their children to school every day regardless of the weather in the correct uniform. We very much appreciate this and see this as a sign of your support and thank you for the support that our staff give to your children every day. SWPBS - This week we are focussing on two rules, Be Safe and Be Responsible. The 4 Be catch phrase is “Play Fairly, Cross Safely” That means: I will play fairly and for fun not win at all costs. I will cooperate with my friends. I will take turns when playing games. I will follow the rules. I will share and show respect. I will be a modest winner and good loser. I will help those that are still learning how to play. I will include all in games and not exclude others. I will speak appropriately to all. I will walk away and cool down by myself if I get frustrated. I will seek a teacher on duty’s assistance if a problem arises. I will walk my bike and scooter on footpath near school, in the school grounds and across the crossing, ensuring I always wear a helmet. Have a Great Week. John

From the Deputy Principal Why Reading and Writing are equally important? Over the last ten years research has shown that reading and writing are more interdependent than we thought. The relationship between reading and writing is a bit like that of the chicken and egg. Which came first is not as important as the fact that without one the other cannot exist. A child’s literacy development is dependent on this interconnection between reading and writing. The Relationship Between Reading and Writing Basically put: reading affects writing and writing affects reading. Research has found that when children read extensively they become better writers. Reading a variety of genres helps children learn text structures and language that they can then transfer to their own writing. In addition, reading provides young people with prior knowledge that they can use in their writing. One of the primary reasons that we read is to learn. Especially while we are still in school, a major portion of what we know comes from the texts we read. Since writing is the act of transmitting knowledge in print, we must have information to share before we can write it. Therefore reading plays a major role in writing. At the same time practice in writing helps children build their reading skills. This is especially true for younger children who are working to develop phonemic awareness and phonics skills. Phonemic awareness (the understanding that words are developed from sound “chunks”) develops as children read and write new words. Similarly, phonics skills or the ability to link sounds together to construct words are reinforced when children read and write the same words. For older children practice in the process of writing their own texts helps them analyze the pieces that they read. They can apply their knowledge about the ways that they chose to use particular language, text structure or content to better understand a professional author’s construction of his or her texts. Phonemic awareness and phonics are two of the pillars of reading. Without understanding the connection between sounds and letters, a person cannot read. The connection between reading and writing can help solidify these skills in young readers. Phonemic Awareness is developed through ‘segmenting’ sound chunks that we hear and Phonics is the act of ‘blending’ the sound chunks we hear onto paper through representing the sound chunks (phonemes) into graphemes (the written form).

Strategies we use at Maleny State School to reinforce the development of literacy skills are:

Prep – Oral Language Program (which helps students to develop Phonemic Awareness)

Prep, Year 1, Year 2 – Get Reading Right (Phonics Program) and Camera/Flash Word Recognition.

Prep-Year 6 – Reading and writing lessons whereby we follow the Gradual Release of Responsibility Model.

Children often ask – “Why do I have to do this?” – for a number of situations, in the case of learning to read and write, it is common sense to adults that reading and writing are important. One of the key aims of the Australian Curriculum, English is for students to understand the ‘purpose’ of the different forms of reading and writing. Use any opportunity where ‘real-life’ reading and writing has to be performed as a perfect opportunity to discuss and show the purpose of and relationship between these two essential academic and life skills. This will ultimately lead to children becoming better readers and writers.

Classroom News

Prep Playground News We have all enjoyed watching the recent progress in the Prep playground as our plans and ideas come to life. We can’t wait to explore the dry creek beds, water tanks for water play, pathways, stepping stones, bridges, decks, stairs, seats, sandpit kitchen, amphitheatre and eat in the large undercover area. Hopefully it won’t be too much longer before we can start playing here.

Yr 1 News Welcome back to all our Students and Parents. We hope you have had a fantastic fun filled holiday. This term is very exciting. Our learning is centred around having fun in a fantastic learning environment. Our sports day was fantastic, and all the children were so enthusiastic, and tried their best. Please don’t forget your time for our Parent Teacher interviews, which is a great opportunity to discuss your child’s learning with your Teacher, and, therefore work together to enhance learning outcomes. Hats are a necessity in our climate, so please ensure that your child comes with a hat, no hat no play. Please ensure that all items are clearly marked such as jumpers, hat, coats, etc. with your child’s name. This term I hope that we can have 100% attendance within our classrooms. If you ever wish to discuss your child’s concerns, please make an appointment with us so we can allocate time, so that an effective communication atmosphere will prevail. Yours in Learning Rosie Gatehouse and Hayley Krause Year 2 News Welcome to term 3. All the children have settled in well and they are enjoying listening to the story George’s Marvellous Medicine by Roald Dahl. We have started Geography and this will continue for the whole semester. Next week we will begin growing some plants and watching Mealworms grow in science. We look forward to seeing what happens. 3A and 3B News We are pleased to be back for the start of the second half of the year, time is going by quickly! Both classes have welcomed another new student into their group in the first week back. We are looking forward to discussing your child’s progress at the Parent / Teacher interviews in Week 2. Both classes enjoyed the final couple of weeks of last term with the excursions to the Pioneer Village and our Sports days. The children were very well behaved and also tried their best and were good sports! We would appreciate any children needing any stationery items to please get these as soon as possible to enable the best possible learning outcomes. We have settled in to the new term really well, congratulations to all the students! If you would like to help out in the classroom, please contact your child’s teacher. We appreciated all the parent / carer helpers we had in Semester One. Until next time, enjoy the winter season. 3B celebrated NAIDOC week by researching a famous Australian Indigenous person. We found out that there were many people who have accomplished great things for our country. Each student then presented their chosen person to the class and shared their learning. We now have a wall of fame to show our respect for these people and

to share this with the other students and parents in our school.

Chappy News WHAT ARE YOU FIGHTING FOR? Welcome back everyone. I hope you all had a restful break and the right amount of fun and relaxation this holiday. For the last few weeks I have been thinking about a conversation I had before the holidays. It was a very honest conversation about how anger and rage were destroying relationships within a family. This person was very passionate about a particular topic and believed that they were fighting for a worthy cause. When I identified the rage behind the passion, it was acknowledged that it was a problem affecting the people most important in their life. At one point, I asked the question, “Are you going to realise at the end of your life that you were fighting for the wrong cause?” This question stopped the conversation for a thoughtful silence. And it is a question that we must all ask ourselves. Are we allowing our time, money, resources, emotional energy and physical energy to be spent on things that have no lasting value? Or am I investing those valuable resources into the people in my life who are going to benefit the most? Just a thought to leave you with. Have a great week! UPCOMING EVENT… MENTOR TRAINING DAY on the 25 July at 9am in the Meeting Room. Please RSVP!
