FROM THE PRINCIPAL Dear Parents Our School Priorities are Feedback for Learning and Reading This term we have spent time and resources looking at individual students and ensuring they are demonstrating improvement in reading over the term. We have used the case management approach to look deeply into the students needs and ensure classroom strategies are put in place to build skills and improve reading. I have been very impressed by the results students have achieved. All teachers have come off line this term to work together in year levels and continuing the work of feedback for learning in mathematics. All year levels have developed learning lad- ders to assist students to know what they can do and what they need to do to improve. We will share and explain these to parents in Term 4. Fete Update On Friday 8 September the school oval will be closed to students and parents from 9.00am to facilitate fete setup. If your child is picked up from Carberry Street in the afternoon, they will be unable to walk across the oval to get to Carberry Street. Please speak to your child/ren about alternate arrangements for pickup on the day i.e. a different pick up location or a differ- ent route to access Carberry Street. Thank you for your cooperation as we prepare for this wonderful event. See You At The Fete! Thank you to the Fete committee and all volunteers who have worked together to bring this event to our whole community. The opening ceremony will be in the undercover /assembly area at 11am I am looking for- ward to seeing you all there. A special thank you to all our sponsors, in particular our our platinum sponsor Garry Jones from McGrath. 2018 Outside School Hours Care (OSHC) Options As you know we have struggled meeting the community demands for Outside School Hours Care. While we are looking to expand capacity for our P&C run Wilston Kids Care it will not assist options for the beginning of 2018. As an alternative we are exploring relationships with other providers. Grange Thistle Football Club is excited to be offering an after school soccer program at Wil- ston State School from Term 4 this year. This program will be available on Wednesday and Thursday afternoons from 3:15-5:00pm and may be an alternative to Wilston Kids Care for girls and boys who enjoy an active afternoon of sport and games. Many Wilston State School children already play soccer at Grange Thistle Football club, which is based just around the corner at Lanham Park and, like the school, is almost 100 years old. Through this program the club hopes to strengthen its relationship with the school and encourage more children to participate in sporting activities. Please refer to the brochures at the end of the newsletter for further details. You can sign up through https://www.grangethistle.com/after-school-programs. Note that this is an independ- ent offering not associated with the Wilston State School or the P&C. Flyers will go home with students early next week. Jude Fountain Principal Term 3. The Primary Research Project is an online, multiple-choice competition (40 questions on 8 different topics: Inventors & Explorers, Environmental Matters, Sport, Entertainment & Festivals, etc.) which requires a maxi-mum of 4 hours over a 10-day period (17-27 October 2017; Term 4, Weeks 3-4). Students are encouraged to use the internet, encyclopedi-as, dictionaries, and any other library resources at their disposal to an-swer the questions. The Primary Research Project provides an opportunity for students to research, interpret and evaluate information. All participating students will receive a certificate. Further information can be found at www.GiantClassroom.com.au.

The cost is $7 per student. Wilston State School has a total of 50 places reserved in the Primary Research Project, so register your inter-est before Friday, 15 September 2017 (Term 3, Week 10). Permission forms are available from Mr Brendan Medlin (Science Room, F Block; email [email protected]).

NEWS FROM HPE

Summer Gala Days Training for the upcoming gala days has begun. There are some stu-dents who have other commitments that may clash with training times. There is no pressure for these students to forgo their prior commitments to make training. Students will need to discuss this with their coaches. A gala day code of behaviour form will be coming home with students this week. This needs to be completed and returned this term to the student’s class room teacher. This will ensure they are eligible to attend the gala days.

FROM THE UNIFORM/BOOKSHOP

Stocking up for a new school year takes time and in the last week we’ve been unpacking a new shipment of microfibre and gaberdine shorts to get ready for 2018. We’ve got more shirts, dresses and skorts on the way too. There’s always something going on behind the scenes at the Uniform shop.

Here’s a few more things you need to know this week:

Opening times: The Uniform Shop and Bookshop is open this Friday and next Wednesday and Friday before the holidays. In Term 4 we will be open on the first day of school. Our opening times for Term 4 are Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings from 8.15am-9.45am. We are located in D Block, next to the Tuckshop. MunchMonitor: Order all your uniform and stationery items online at www.munchmonitor.com. Username: wilstonss and Password: munch4051. Please place orders by 9.15am on Wednesday and Friday. This will ensure orders are deliv-ered to teachers’ pigeonholes for class delivery on those days.

Senior Shirts: For current Year 5 students, Term 4 is when we’ll be organising your Senior Shirts for next year. Look out for a notice about this in the first few weeks of next term as we need to finalise orders before the end of school. The Senior Shirt is worn with great pride by our senior students who become leaders in the school and mentors for other students.

Entertainment Books: The Entertainment Book is full of discounts to keep everyone in the family entertained these school holidays. If you order online, the book will be delivered for free to your home and we still have copies available at the Uniform/Bookshop if you want to drop in and buy one directly. The books cost $65 and are full of restaurant, cafe, shopping, cinema, theatre, accommodation and travel discounts. You’ll also be helping the school as 20 per cent of all book sales go back to us.

Page 4: DATE CLAIMERS FROM THE PRINCIPAL - e q · PDF fileFROM THE PRINCIPAL ... Performance Choir and Ensem-bles (2.00pm) P&C Meeting D Block 20 October Summer Gala Day 24 October Year 1

There are plenty of local businesses that have discounts in the Enter-tainment Book, including Brew Master’s, Harry’s Diner, The Rusty Bur-row, Tomato Brothers Wilston, Viet Lotus and Willow and Spoon. Order online at www.entbook.com.au/221987b or pick one up at the Uniform Shop or the Office.

Tip of the week: Don’t forget school photos are being taken next week, September 11-13. Spruce up your formal uniform with hair accessories, a new dress for girls or a formal check shirt for girls or boys and don’t forget black shoes with either our school socks or plain white socks.

Did you know: Our winter jacket sale is continuing. You can buy one of our old style jackets for $20 instead of the usual $45. We have sizes 4 and 6 remaining but you can only buy them over the counter so come in and grab a bargain.

Ever Onward Wilston!
