From The Principal Maleny State School Annual Improvement focus areas Writing Attendance Welcome back everyone We enjoyed a sensational start to our term with students returning happy, settled and extremely well behaved. Term 4 is always exciting and absolutely flies as there are so many events taking place. This week I will join our Yr 4 students who head off on Wednesday to Currimundi Camp for an exciting 3 days while our Yr 5 students will head to Mapleton for their camp later in the Term. Our school focus remains writing and attendance. I encourage families to continue to support students with their reading each night and staying in touch with teachers to see how you can best assist your children this term. Extremely Successful School Review Our school participated in a full school review at the end of last term and will receive a full written report in the coming weeks which will be made available on our web site and discussed at a future P&C meeting. Reviewers briefed staff and myself at the end of the review and orally expressed that they were very impressed by the direction in which the school is heading; and by many of the processes in place; as well as how these are being implemented. I remind parents that we are a relatively small school and most year levels have two full class cohorts, this does not allow for a great deal of flexibility around which class or teacher some requests may ask for. Our staffing formula is based on student Day 8 2017 enrolment numbers and as such it is crucial that 2017 Prep students enrol now, also if families are leaving next year it is crucial they alert us now. All requests on time are considered but ultimately decisions are made to benefit all students rather than specific individuals. We aim for balanced classes and a lot of time is put into making classes up by teachers who consider numerous factors including, academic, behaviour, social-friends, emotional, students with special needs, disabilities, physical classrooms, legitimate on time parent requests. Sorry late requests from parents will not be able to be considered. Register for Prep now! Don’t wait It is essential that parents who have not contacted the office to register their child for Prep in 2017 do so now. Please do not assume we know you are coming. Registration can be completed in a one minute phone call (Ph54998333) or an email to [email protected]. Note: all students will require a birth certificate before commencing Prep in 2017. I look forward to meeting with you soon. If you know a family in the area that has a Prep eligible student for 2017 please encourage them to contact us immediately. Prep Enrolment Interviews this Week Term 4 Week 2 Monday 10 October Tuesday 11 October Please Call 54998333 to book your 20 min interview with your child. Welcome to Prep and Transition Days We encourage any parents that have Prep eligible students for 2017 to enrol their children as soon as possible and call the office to arrange an enrolment interview. Students need to be enrolled to attend our transition days on: Wednesday 2, 9 and 16 of November. Parents must attend these sessions unless children are coming with GoodStart Centre staff. Maleny High School Transition Yr 6 students will transition to the Maleny High School on the following dates. Monday, 7 & Tuesday, 8 Nov. Parents will need to make arrangements for students to get to and from the Maleny State High School on these days.

Congratulations Ryan National Swim Champ On the September holidays Ryan blitzed the field in the 2016 School Sport Australian Swimming Championships held in Darwin. Ryan won a Bronze medal in the Mixed 10-12 year old, 4 x 50m, 200 freestyle relay and a Gold medal in the 10 x 15m, 10-15 year old able body/multiclass relay. Ryan swam in individual events of 50m freestyle, backstroke and breaststroke in the multiclass 10-12 age category. Ryan proudly displayed his medals on parade last week. This was an outstanding effort and is even more amazing when you consider that Ryan competed in the 10 to 15 age group. Well done Ryan you are an inspiration and we are all very proud of you. Ryan would like to thank Shane Turner and coach Christine Peters for their support and training. Are you a member of our Town Library? If not I would encourage not only to join yourself but to join your whole family up just like Mr Grieg and I did last week. Not only do you have access to a huge range of books, eBooks, magazines, games, toys, video and audio resources located at the Maleny Library but in a couple of days you can borrow numerous resources from any of our Sunshine Coast Libraries that will be deliver to Maleny. Pop in and have your say on one of 2 new plans for the expansion of our town library. I very much thank Amanda, Candice and ‘The Friends of the Library Volunteers’ for their library tour, morning tea and chat last week. Strong community relationships open up a variety of support networks and opportunities for our school. Grab a bargain from Maleny Library monthly book sale Sunshine Coast Council, in partnership with the Friends of Maleny Library, invites avid readers to grab a bargain at the monthly book sale from 9-11.30am on the first Saturday of each month at Maleny Library. Sunshine Coast Libraries are constantly removing older stock to make way for new titles and has hundreds of books up for grabs at very affordable prices, with additional titles being added every month. Titles on sale include popular authors and bestsellers, classic books and a range of genres including mystery, romance, thrillers and more. There is a book to suit everyone’s interests including popular topics such as gardening, computers and cooking. Young book worms don’t miss out as there is also a range of junior titles on sale. Bring a bag to fill for $5 but make sure you are early to grab a book bargain. All funds raised are injected back into supporting the Maleny Library service. Maleny Library is located at 5 Coral Street, Maleny. For further information visit council’s library website or call 5475 8989.

School Captain Process Year 5 students will be informed this week about the process for nomination of 2017 School Captains/House Captains and Music Captain positions. Nominations for these upcoming positions will be due by 11:00am Tuesday 18 October; no late nominations will be accepted after this date. Writing For students to become better writers, the best thing they can do is practice writing every single day. But sometimes it can be hard to think of what to write about! Here is a short list of creative writing prompts to help children with ideas and give them something to write about daily. Whether they write short stories, poems, or like to keep a journal – these will stretch their imagination and give you some ideas on what to write about with your child/children! 1. Outside the Window: What’s the weather outside your window doing right now? If that’s not inspiring, what’s the weather like somewhere you wish you could be? 2. The Vessel: Write about a ship or other vehicle that can take you somewhere different from where you are now. 3. Dancing: Who’s dancing and why are they tapping those toes? 4. Food: What’s for breakfast? Dinner? Lunch? Or maybe you could write a poem about that time you met a friend at a party. 5. Eye Contact: Write about two people seeing each other for the first time. 6. The Rocket-ship: Write about a rocket-ship on it’s way to the moon or a distant galaxy far, far, away. 7. Dream-catcher: Write something inspired by a recent dream you had. 8. Animals: Choose an animal. Write about it! 9. Friendship: Write about being friends with someone. 10. Dragon: Envision a dragon. Do you battle him? Or is the dragon friendly? Use descriptive language. 11. Greeting: Write a story or poem that starts with the word “hello”. 12. The Letter Poem: Write a poem using words from a famous letter or a letter from your own collection. 13. The found poem: Read a book and circle some words on a page. Use those words to craft a poem. Alternatively you can cut out words and phrases from magazines. 14. Shadow: Imagine you are someone’s shadow for a day.

Classroom News Year 4 News

Year 4 have started our new English unit “Examining persuasion in advertisements”. We are looking at and

discussing a variety of advertisements from magazines, TV and websites. The teachers have been impressed with

what the students already know about advertising techniques and how hard they are working.

Next week we will be going on camp from Wednesday 12 to Friday 14 October. This camp is at the Sunshine Coast

Recreation Centre, Currriumundi. The students are looking forward to having a go at some exciting activities such

as catapults, body boarding, archery and team building games. We are very lucky to have Mr Flamank, Miss Deena,

Miss Tayyah and Chappy Beccy joining us to help out on camp. The teachers are looking forward to seeing the

students learning how to cooperate and work as a team.

On Friday 28 October, Yr 4 will be hosting a “Cultural Expo” to showcase their work about a culture they have been investigating. The students were asked to select and research a different culture from a non-English speaking country and focus on the appropriate etiquette and customs to show respect if one was to travel to this country. At the Culture Expo students will share information, pictures, food, and a PowerPoint presentation. This will be a great way to culminate the unit and for the students to be proud of their work.

Year 5 News from Term 3 Last term in Music, the Yr 5 classes were using Humarimbas (a marimba or large xylophone suspended from the belts of two of the three players.) They each played different notes to create one musical piece.

Just before the holidays students transformed Banjo Paterson poems into a narrative structure. Here are some excerpts:

Fur and Feathers “Nice catch, Butterfingers!” said a Kangaroo sarcastically as an

egg-shaped missile catapulted across the field, the skinny head of the emu slammed against the ground leaving a head shaped dent on its hard surface. The Emu’s short chicken-like wings flapped helplessly as they tried to stop the creamy brown missile from hitting their pasty beak. (Clover)

The Man From Ironbark Just then the

infuriated man pulled up two tremendous gorilla paws

to accelerate faster than a flying jet and bang, the poor barber’s eyesight turned black. (BJ)

Waltzing Matilda Pulling their guns out frustratedly one yelled, “Tell me what’s in that

sack of yours.” They heard a “Mmmmaa.” He walked away slowly hoping they didn’t hear. The troopers shot. “Bang!” They got the Jumbuck instead. “Thanks wasn’t looking forwards to killing that Jumbuck,” laughed Jack. (Leela)

Chappy News KEEP IT SIMPLE Welcome back after the holidays. We had a wonderful time during the break and spent half of it camping in my neighbour’s back yard, despite the slope and uncomfortable night’s sleep. Our kid’s just love spending time with us and enjoying the simple things in life. Its funny how fulfilled I feel when I have had quality time with my children. Even if all we do is sit around a fire and toast marshmallows and play Spotlight in the dark, nothing fancy or expensive. Children love to just ‘be’. Just be with the people they love the most in the world and I have come to see more and more as my children reach another birthday that there is such a window of time that we have to create those lasting memories of childhood. Most children want for nothing more than just time with their parents and so I will strive every opportunity I am given to make the most of that time with them. I encourage you to do so as well. The first breakfast for the Term will be Wednesday 12 October. If you are interested in helping please contact Chappy for more details. Mentoring Program – PLEASE, if you know of anyone with one hour to spare a week and could commit to building a relationship with a child during school hours (I AM PARTICULARLY WANTING DADS AND GRANDADS) ask Chappy for more information.
