Let's tackle hunger this year in a SUPER way!! In 1990, an organization called the "Souper Bowl of Caring" was formed. That year, 22 churches collected $5,700 in South Carolina. Since this was such a success, the organizers decided to start a youth-led movement with a simple prayer: "Lord, even as we enjoy the Super Bowl football game, help us be mindful of those who are without a bowl of soup to eat". Since that time, SBOC has become a National organization and ordinary people, like you, have generated more than $100 million for soup kitchens, food banks, and other charities in communities across the Country. In addition, hundreds of thousands of youth have experienced for themselves the joy and satisfaction of giving and serving, inspiring people of all ages to follow their generous example.

This year, our LORICA Teen Group will be a part of the “Souper Bowl of Caring” movement. Teen members will be in the back of church after Mass with their soup pots on Super Bowl Sunday weekend (Feb. 2-3). We ask everyone to donate at least $1 to the cause (if you can give a few dollars more, that would really be appreciated). The money collected will be split between the St. Patrick - Saint Vincent de Paul fund and the LORICA Teen Group for their service projects. If you would like to learn more about the Souper Bowl of Caring collection, please go to www.souperbowl.org. “LORICA” TEENS NEWS! TONIGHT, Sunday, January 13, from 5 pm to 6:30 pm, in the Parish Center! We will do a Church Pew Wipe, and have hot chocolate and goodies to warm us up! Please contact the Parish Office, Amy Joyce at 570-385-0210, or Katherine Joyce at 570-640-8909 for more info about LORICA, or to let us know if you are a teen who would like to join us!! For the first several years, I resisted God’s gentle nudge to “Come away with Me” and attend our Parish Retreat. It was so easy to find an excuse: I had a prior commitment on the same weekend (for five years!) . . . I'd be uncomfortable spending so much time with a group of people who were "only acquaintances from church” . . . what if I was expected to share my thoughts and feelings about my personal relationship with God — in front of people I barely knew?

I hadn’t attended a weekend retreat since high school (remember "Search Weekends?") and I just wasn’t sure that this weekend Parish Retreat was for me. But yet, from December into February, the invitation was constantly there. It was in the weekly bulletin, mentioned at weekend Masses, and even personally extended by fellow parishioners—which I did my best to try and avoid!

I finally stopped scrambling for excuses. In February 2016, I attended the St. Patrick Parish Retreat for the first time, and I now realize that all of those times when I heard the invitation from Monsignor O’Connor, retreat team members, fellow parishioners, etc., it was really God inviting me, through them, to Come Away with Him. He pursued me patiently but persistently (and I’m sure He smiled and shook His head at some of my excuses!)

For those first several years I only considered the sacrifices that I would have to make (my time, the cost to attend, my comfort, etc.) and those things kept me away. I never considered the gifts I would receive, but there have been many. Some have been subtle and some not so subtle, and some are only known to God and me. But, there is no doubt that He has blessed me in many ways for accepting His invitation and trusting Him enough to finally say, “Yes.”

Do you hear Him inviting you? ~Melody Montag

“BLESSED ARE THEY WHO HOPE IN THE LORD!” 9th Annual Parish Retreat

Our Parish Retreat has been such a blessing year after year, and we are so excited to be planning another weekend of fellowship, fun, and growth in the Lord for 2019! What a wonderful way to begin this year’s journey! Once again, the Retreat will be held at the beautiful Villa of Our Lady Retreat House, Mount Pocono, from Friday, February 15, to Sunday, February 17, 2019. This year’s theme is “Blessed are they who Hope in the Lord!” The cost of the Retreat is $155 for double or triple occupancy, or $180 for a single room, each with a private bathroom. The price includes coach bus transportation, to and from the Retreat Center,

five full meals, snacks, and evening refreshments. Gathering together to seek God more fully, build relationships with the Parish Family, and to simply let down your hair and relax—PRICELESS! Please make your check payable to “Church of Saint Patrick”, for the full amount or a deposit of at least $50, and return it to Debbie in the Parish Office. You may also mail to: St. Patrick Church - 319 Mahantongo St. - Pottsville, PA 17901 A confirmation letter containing all the details will be mailed to you at least two weeks before the Retreat. If you have any questions, please feel free to call our Rector, Charlie Bressi at 570-691-8781 or our Rectora, Helen Weiss at 570-527-4895, or ask a Retreat Team Member.
