In the first reading from the prophet Isaiah we hear: Share your bread with the hungry, shelter the homeless; cloth the naked...and do not turn your back on them. Then your light shall break forth like the dawn, and your wound shall quickly be healed. Fr. Don Kenny, beloved former pastor of St. Thomas, is with us this weekend to talk

about his mission and vision in the Quito Ecuador Barrio. Today’s Isaiah scripture calls us to situations exactly like this. I hope you are able to support him generously with your time and talent. The very same Isaiah reading continues with instruction for dealing with conflict. We face conflict every day; in our world,

in our politics, in our own church. But scrip-ture tells us to build relationships with one another. Every individual belongs to the whole. We, our world, culture, society, families, and each of us as individuals need healing. The Word of God is very clear about how that healing and peace will come to us and our world. If we really believe that we are heaven sent as sons and daughters of God, we will live differently. Are we a godsend to our world and to others? “Then you shall call, and the Lord will...say: Here I am!” As I write this letter, we are all preparing for what they tell us may be a history-making blizzard in the Midwest. I hope you are all safe and warm, that you are well-fed and surrounded by those who love you, and that the “light shall rise for you in the darkness”! In Christ’s love,

Dear Friends,

Welcome Guests and Visitors!

We’re so glad you’re here and in-vite you to walk the path of faith with us. Our goal is to provide a spiritual home where all are wel-come, where the healing, reconcil-ing, liberating love of God flows through us to all people. We believe the church is the sacrament of God’s saving presence in the world.

Presentation of Gifts — The gifts of bread and wine are brought forward to become the body and blood of Christ…but we also bring ourselves and our own needs forward at this time. Bringing up the gifts is a won-derful way to celebrate an anniversary, a life, a birthday or the death of a loved one. The book is available in the Narthex. Can’t find it? Ask the Host Greeters for their help to sign up. Host Greeters — We are in need of host greeters, especially at the 4:30 pm Mass. If you are interested in being a vital member of this ministry, please contact Lori Culberson in the Liturgy Office.

Wedding Workshop The next music and liturgy workshop to help cou-ples choose music and prepare their wedding mass or ceremony will be held next Saturday, February 26 from 10:00 a.m. to Noon in the Church. All couples who will be wed at St. Thomas must at-tend one of these workshops which are held several times throughout the year. This workshop should not be confused with the Engaged Couples Retreat Day, which couples must also attend. After February 26, the next workshops are scheduled for April 9 and Septem-ber 17. Contact Diane at 630.355.8980x101 or [email protected] to register.

Opening Our Eyes to St. Paul Paul sees the “Body of Christ” as something alive in this world. He sees it almost as an energy field created by participating in the very real Spirit of Christ. St. Augustine said it well a few centu-ries later, “The church consists in the state of communion of the whole world.” Those who live in communion and love, surely made possi-ble by God, are the church, wherever they are. They are the leaven that will change the world. For Paul, you do not live in the world and go to church. You live in the Church and go to the world Take off your head, shake it and put it back on; because that was not the way any of us were trained to think. Church, for Paul, is not something you attend. Church is something you organically are—or not! It is more a living organism than a formal organization. You don’t join it as much as you breathe it. He is announc-ing an existing mystery more than establishing a new institution. Maybe this is exactly what Jesus meant when he said that many who think they are first will be last, and many who think they are last will be first. Faith and Spiritual Formation Commission

With the numbers of believers in Jesus explod-ing, seven new helpers were appointed to take care of some of the immediate and logistical needs of the community such as paying taxes, feeding the whole group, and taking care of property (Acts 6:3). This allowed the apostles to be able to focus on preach-ing, teaching and praying. Their goal was to bring more people into the fold. After all, Jesus had com-missioned them to baptize all nations “in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit” (Matthew 28:19). The followers of Christ believed He would be returning very soon so they weren’t making any long term plans. They sold their property and many of their belongings and went about their business learn-ing this faith and following Jesus’ instructions with regard to loving God and neighbor and sharing the Eucharist. There were no church buildings; some of the Jews continued to go to the Temple as well as participate in the “house” church services with fel-low Christians. There were no priests; one of the Apostles or another leader would oversee worship services. There was no written Scripture about Jesus; everything was passed on by word of mouth. But all that would change soon.

St. Thomas Soul Searchers February 12 Soul Searchers will meet once a month to explore and discover truths in Edith Stein’s The Science of the Cross: “…it is only by beginning with God that it is possible to understand what spirit is; however, that means that spirit is a mystery that constantly attracts us because it is the mystery of our own being.” Born in 1891 to a German Jewish family, she received a doctorate in philosophy, supported women’s issues and wrote several books. She converted to Catholicism in 1922 and entered the Carmelite Convent of Cologne in 1934 to become Sister Teresa Benedicta. This book, a tribute to St. John of the Cross, remained unfinished because the Gestapo arrested her in 1942 and transported her to Auschwitz where she was gassed to death. Stein was beatified in 1987 as a martyr. Chapters 11-12. pp. 133-152 will be discussed. The next meeting of Soul Searchers is Saturday, February 12 from 9:15 to 10:30 a.m. in the Rectory Basement. The text is available at the Carmelite Center in Darien and on the website: www.icspublications.org. Deacon Will and Mary Maloney are group leaders. Come whenever your schedule allows to enjoy a thought provoking experience. All are welcome to attend this monthly discussion group.

High School Youth Ministry Update The Gospel this week actually is pretty challenging to us – as are the readings. The Gospel from Matthew states quite clearly that our “light must shine before others, that they may see your good deeds; and, be wary that we are not salt that is “no longer good for anything but to be thrown out!” Ouch! That’s pretty harsh, isn’t it?! The first reading is a bit more practi-cal, I think, telling us to not do bad things (like op-pression, false accusation, etc) and instead do good things (giving to the hungry, helping the afflicted). We are told if we do that, a “light shall rise for you.” Now, I hear this general idea a lot in Scripture and life – love God, know Christ, and serve others and you will find joy and life. My life experience tells me this is true too. When I help a friend, a family member, or a stranger I do, actually feel better – almost instantly AND it lasts. There aren’t many things in life that work that way (coffee, maybe?), but I’ve never looked back a few years back on a cup of coffee and smiled at its effects. I have done that for a mission trip, a random act of kindness, etc. Here’s the question then. If this is pretty universal and not just true for me AND if this is what our God asks of us, besides loving and knowing Him, then why don’t we spend as much time practicing it as pos-sible? I know there are many answers to that question, but this week – teens and parents – try to notice what actually gets in the way of you helping and serving those around you. Take this challenge: intentionally serve one person each day. I’m willing to bet you’ll actually come to know Christ more…just a thought.

Joliet Diocese Legislative Advocacy Network Prior to Advent, we defined the Justice Continuum, recognizing that we are all somewhere on that contin-uum. The Joliet Diocese Legislative Advocacy Network allows you to move yourself along the continuum. It allows you to become more aware of and become more educated on social justice issues … and to take action, if you are so moved. Faithful citizenship requires ongoing participation in the continuing political and legislative process. It calls Catholics to see civic and political responsibilities through the eyes of faith and to bring our moral convic-tions to public life. Our responsibility is to measure all public policies by how they protect or undermine the life, dignity, and rights of the human person, whether they protect the poor and vulnerable and advance the common good. You are invited to participate in the Diocesan Legis-lative Advocacy Network (sponsored by The Diocese of Joliet - Peace and Social Justice Ministry). Please visit www.paxjoliet.org/advocacy for more information and to sign up.

Stewardship: It’s a way of Life

Some good Catholics may think they do not have much to share about their faith. Even though they are devoted, and may think they do not know enough to evangelize, but that is a mistaken notion. Evangelization is about acknowledging God's love for us, sharing that love with others and helping those in need. Stewards are also evangelizers in the work of building up the Church.

COMMUNICATIONS FROM THE BISHOP 2011 Catholic Home Missions Appeal Strengthening the Church at Home Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, The weekend of February 12/13 our diocese will take up a collection for the Catholic Home Missions Appeal. Catholic Home Missions is committed to providing poorer dioceses in the United States with the support they need to sustain essential pastoral care. Over the years, the Appeal has supported reli-gious education, evangelization, youth ministry, seminarian education, and ministry training in mis-sion dioceses in Alaska, Appalachia, the Southwest—all across the United States—as well as in Puerto Rico and U.S. territories in the Pacific islands. This important work is made possible through your gener-osity to this yearly Appeal. One tangible way to strengthen the Church is through vibrant youth ministry programs in dioceses and parishes. Through youth ministry, young Catho-lics are evangelized, catechized, trained in leader-ship roles, and encouraged for religious vocations. The young faithful energize the Church and provide a unique vision for the future. Without the Catholic Home Missions Appeal, this essential ministry would not be possible in many mission dioceses in the United States. Last year, our diocese donated $ 229,526.93 to the Catholic Home Missions. I ask that you be gen-erous in this year’s Appeal. As we continue to re-cover from the economic downturn, it is important to remember our Catholic brothers and sisters in the United States whose dioceses are financially fragile even in the best of times. The Church in the United States needs our support. Together, we can strengthen the Church at home. Sincerely yours in Christ, Most Rev. Joseph M. Siegel Diocesan Administrator Auxiliary Bishop

Keynote Speaker Night February Presentatioin Wed, Feb 23, 7:00 pm: Who Were YOU Born to Be? presented by Steve Olsher Imagine being on the brink of losing everything you’ve worked for decades to attain. Couple this with sitting bedside next to someone you love who is on the verge of dying and having a vision of your own funeral where the words being spoken graveside are: “Here lies _____ who dedicated his (or her) life to chasing the almighty dollar.” As these words are spoken, you realize that your life to that point was all about you and those closest to you and that your existence would have zero im-pact on anyone outside of your restricted circle. As you feel your soul tremble, you hear the most impor-tant question you’ve ever been asked. This question, and its life-changing answer, inspires you to shift your life 180 degrees towards a life of service that not only makes an inordinate difference in the lives of those that walk the Earth with you, but also of those in lifetimes to come. This is your chance to heed the inherent blueprint that already exists within you. This is Steve’s story. And through his award-winning writing and renown presentations and Work-shops, he helps others live powerfully, live on-purpose, and identify their WHAT—the one thing they were born to do—and create a step-by-step plan of action for bringing their WHAT to fruition. Who Were You Born To Be? is an inspiring, interac-tive, life-changing presentation that will teach you how to leverage proven shortcuts and strategies of the successful to create happiness and fulfillment now, identify your WHAT, and help you move powerfully towards a lifetime of contribution.

BIO: Steve Olsher is “America’s Reinvention Expert.” A successful entrepreneur who has applied his street smarts, business acumen, and communication skills to a wide range of endeavors, he is the founder of the Reinvention Work-shop, host of Reinvention Radio, as heard on 1100 AM KFNX in Phoenix, Arizona, and author of USA Book News’ 2010 “Self-Help Book of The Year” Journey To You: A Step-by-Step Guide to Becoming Who You Were Born to Be.
