Tuesday Coffee Club held its annual MacMillan Coffee Morning on the 23rd September and raised a total of £211.45, all of which was sent to MacMillan Charity. It was a lovely morning and there was a special buzz in the atmosphere with everyone sampling the home baked produce on offer, along with their tea and coffee and usual biscuits. Thank you to all those who baked for the Cake Stall. Victoria sponges, Tray bakes, Cup cakes, Brownies, Scones, Millionaire’s shortbread; what a mouth watering deliciousness to tease our taste buds!! Paul and Mary would have been proud of our local efforts! Thank you, also, to all those who bought the calorie filled produce and enabled us to send such a worthwhile donation to MacMillan.
Next up, the children’s Hallowe’en Party will be taking place on Sunday November 2nd and the following evening will be the 5th Annual General Meeting of Kilham Hall committee. Members of the public are welcome to join the committee and the meeting will commence at 6.30pm in the office at Kilham Hall. The meeting will include a review of this past year and the re election of the committee. The AGM will be immediately followed by an ordinary meeting which will, however, not be open to the general public.
Thank you for your continued support of Kilham Hall and of its many activities. Kilham Hall Committee

Three Horseshoes Charity Race Night On 27th September we held a Charity Race Night to raise money for Doncaster Cancer Support Group and the Aurora Centre. They are both great local charities which help support those with Cancer, an illness which affects so many of us.
We held a raffle on the evening and thanks to some wonderful donations from local businesses, our raffle, along with the other bits of fund raising we did for the event meant we raised a cracking £2,000 for charity.
As I'm sure you can imagine for such a small village pub this is a fantastic amount and we would really like to shout about it. Big thank you to employee, Laraine Nithsdale, who put in an enormous amount of hard work when it came to sourcing the prizes, arranging the evening and counting all the penny pots. News From Branton St Wilfrid’s CE Primary School October 2014
PTA Sponsored Bounce for Books On 23rd September the whole school took part in a Sponsored event to raise money for books. The school had identified a number of areas where additional books are needed and our active PTA agreed to donate all funds from their Sponsored Bounce to the purchase of books. All the children took part and enjoyed a two minute bounce on a bouncy castle, in fact several staff were tempted to have a go too! Thank you to all who sponsored a child as the event has raised £1200 in pledges and we look forward to enjoying our new reading materials!
Harvest Festival Thank you to all who attended our Harvest Festival on 6th October. The children performed readings, poems and songs to a packed house. Many thanks for all your generous harvest gifts which were sold off afterwards and raised £387.16 for Christian Aid. All unsold produce was donated to the M25 housing and support charity. Thanks to St Wilfrid’s Church for their donation of produce from their Harvest Festival and to Father Andrew who joined the school to lead prayer and the blessing.
Jubilate News Our worship group, Jubilate have had a very busy start to the year with two performances. Firstly they were invited to perform at St James’ Church, Hexthorpe to promote the Annual Shoebox Appeal. This charity distributes Christmas shoe box presents to children who live in areas experiencing severe hardship and provides for children who would not otherwise receive a Christmas present. Many of our children are now inspired to put together a shoe box and their performance was very well received. The refreshments and cakes and biscuits provided for the children afterwards went down very well!
Jubilate then took part in the Patronal Service on 12th October at St Wilfrid’s Church, Cantley. The Church was packed for a concelebrated Mass which was led by Bishop Glynn of Beverley. It was a fantastic occasion and once again our Jubilate group did the school proud, sang beautifully and represented Branton St Wilfrid’s so well. The buffet afterwards was possibly one of the highlights for the children, I think there is a common theme emerging linked to how much they enjoy their food! It was lovely to see so many parents at the service as it really confirmed the strong link the school and Church have.
As ever we look forward to reporting on our activities over the next month and would like to inform you of our Christmas Fair which is on Friday 5th December at 4.30 pm in the school hall and to which you are all welcome.

A Change of Perspective
Any guesses as to what’s in this picture? The first time I saw it I thought it looked like some sort of military bunker. But then I was encouraged by someone to look at the object from a different perspective. I was told that the photograph is a close-up of something that’s only a few inches wide and something I would see whilst driving. It is of course a cat’s eye.
As soon as I was told what it was it became so obvious and being a person who drives between Maltby and Tickhill on a fairly regular basis at night I have often been thankful for the invention of this strange little object. They guide drivers along dark country roads, they show the way to slip-roads on motorways and provide much needed illumination without using any energy whatsoever. Simple but effective.
Darkness can be an unsettling thing. My Dad is partially sighted now and as such he lives in a world that even during the brightest days everything he sees is in constant shadow. He uses magnifiers and lamps in order to do the simplest things, such as make a cup of tea or read crossword clues. Because of his eye condition his vision is also distorted so the view he has of the world is very different to most people around him. Quite often nothing is what it seems.
There are all different types of darkness too. There is a saying that we can be deliberately kept in the dark when information is withheld that might have been beneficial to us. And apparently it’s always darkest before the dawn. Darkness, whether physical or metaphorical, is seen as sinister and something to be dispelled
Martin Luther King Jnr once said ‘Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that.’ Here he speaking of a darkness of the soul and spirit. Darkness embodied in his time injustice and prejudice. It is this kind of darkness that Christians believe that Jesus came to rid the world of. In scripture Jesus is often referred to as the Light of the World. His ministry was all about love and lifting up those who had the least in society and speaking out on their behalf. When we choose to follow Christ we begin to see the world from a different perspective. Instead of seeing a world where we must compete in order to survive we must see our role as being a light in the darkness. This can mean standing up against injustices, walking alongside someone who is maybe struggling to find their place in the world, or simply telling someone they are loved by God and appreciated by those around them. As anyone who has ever traveled along a dark road at night and followed the cat’s eyes will know, just a little bit of light goes a very long way.
Revd. Louise Tinniswood St Saviour’s, Auckley and St Oswald’s & Holy Trinity, Finningley

We are pleased to report all of our reception children have settled well into new routines. Here we are ready to listen, participate and learn. So far we’ve had a busy half term talking about ‘Ourselves’ and ‘Our families’. This week we have been focusing on ‘Homes’. The 3 little pigs came to visit and talked
about sensible materials used to build a house.
The children then have been building houses with shapes, exploring different materials, making their own house using boxes and other materials and writing their own ‘Three Little Pigs’ book.
Outside we have been looking for shapes, retelling the Three Little Pigs’ story using masks, bricks and building tools as well as drawing shapes with chalk, paint and water.
We’ve had a fantastic fun filled week even though the weather has been very wet and miserable. Luckily, “The big bad wolf doesn’t like the rain, so he can’t blow our house down”, the children had decided.
The Year 2 children have been on an adventure to explore ‘The Deep’. Our topic has focused on pirates and we have learnt about life at sea, how to be a pirate and even written our own brilliant pirate stories. To take us through to half term we are now focusing on life under the sea and the creatures we will find deep down below the surface. The children all had a fantastic day exploring ‘The Deep’ and finding some of the animals we had heard about before we visited. We attended a workshop looking closely at the animals found under the sea and producing some great drawings. This has inspired us to create our own under water scenes using collage materials and sparked many more ideas for artwork.

Auckley School opened their doors and welcomed in lots of very keen parents, grandparents and visitors into school for a McMillan Coffee Morning. The year 6 children took the lead and served hot drinks and cakes. The children came out of class to join their relatives in the hall for a spot of refreshment before viewing the school. We would like to thank all those who attended this event- we were overwhelmed with how many supported this event and a special thanks to all those who donated buns. We raised a fantastic £530. We took a fantastic team of eleven boys to Rossington All Saints Academy to compete in a primary 7-a-side football competition. The boys played four matches in some terrible conditions, very cold and wet, against other school from all over Doncaster. We lost our first match but came back fighting and started our second game 1-0 up but unfortunately it ended in a 1-1 draw. We also drew our last two matches with all the boys working well as a team and supporting each other. The boys attended all their training sessions and worked really hard but unfortunately only came 4th this time. Well tried boys.

Everyone at Auckley School said a fond farewell to Ralph Hodgkinson our loyal caretaker of ten years. Everyone gathered in the school hall for a special assembly to wish Mr Ralph, as he is affectionately known, a very happy retirement. Each class had created a personalised card and these were presented these to him in the school hall. He spoke about how much he enjoyed his time working at Auckley School and that he will miss eve-ryone, but is looking forward to having plenty of time to play bowls and golf.

NEWS FROM ST OSWALD’S PRIMARY SCHOOL, FINNINGLEY
The pupils of St Oswald’s are busy getting in gear for Halloween and bonfire night celebrations, and then soon it will be time for Christmas.
A “spooooooky” disco will set off the festivities on October the 22nd and I am sure they are
all “loooooooking” forward to it.
The "Friends Of St Oswald’s" fundraising volunteers would like to ask any parents or grandparents of the school if they would like to participate in the organization, donation or running of anything like the school disco or the up and coming school’s Winter Fair to enquire at the schools office or their website. More information on the Winter Fair coming soon!
The younger children of Keystage 1 including the new Reception Class helped Rev Neil Redeyoff with the celebration of Harvest Festival at St Oswald’s Church, offering donations of food to help with Doncaster’s Food Bank
A group of lucky students were taken on a trip over to Hill House School in the neighbouring village of Auckley to hear from acclaimed children’s novelist Caroline Lawrence who writes the award winning “Roman Mysteries” series for children 8-12 years old.
St Oswald’s where also joined by several other schools from the area and they spent the afternoon being taken on a journey through her imagination and creativity, which she uses for these fantastic stories. She took time to tell the children how she creates her characters and develops her stories and themes. Car-oline then took the time to sign each child's book, that had been generously given to each student by the Hill House school.
It was in 2000 that Caroline Lawrence wrote 'The Thieves of Ostia', the first in a series of children's adventure stories set in Ancient Rome. The Roman Mysteries combine Caro-line's love of art history, ancient languages and travel. Her other passions include cinema, the internet, travel and London. She was born in the England but her American parents re-turned to the USA and she grew up in Califor-nia, she came back to the England to study at Cambridge University.
