Editors Letter...

Get ready for the heat wave...

planned around 1st September,

just as most children head back to

school for the new term! What is

it with our weather? Just wait and

see, September will be blue skies

and red hot!

I have resembled a pack horse for most of

August, a trip out needs waterproofs, a

fleece, sun hats and sun cream, whichever

you don’t pack you need! Never mind, at

least there was no chance of anyone getting

sun burnt.

However, the sun did shine at the Auckley

Show and helped organisers achieve a

record turnout, we have many photographs

of the event in this month’s arrow however

the results from the show will be in the

October issue.

We also have an article this month for the

residents in the parish of Cantley with

Branton (every household in Branton, Old

Cantley and the Bessacarr side of Warning

Tongue Lane). The new development at

Manor Farm falls within your parish

boundary so all new dwellings will come

under your parish council. The article

explains how this effects your parish. If you

are a resident, make sure your voice is

heard whether you agree or not. A

boundary review can only be achieved if

you ask for it. The Council need your

views.

Thank you to everyone who has sent in

articles of interest and information. The

deadline for the October issue is

Wednesday 15th September.

Best Wishes

Record breaking turnout for

The 2010 Auckley Show

Saturday 14th August started a bit cool and dull,

however, the sun soon came out to shine as did

many locals for this year’s show.

Many local businesses were there supporting this

annual event including local architect, Antony

Snowden who with the help of his wife Vicky and

Mandy Tuite, entertained children, and parents

with lots of sporting competitions including a tug of

war—where the girls won!

Flying start had a stall and helped to entertain

some of the younger children with colouring in

activities and Doncaster’s Astronomical Society

welcomed show goers to take a safe look at the

sun!

There were many performances in the main

marquee, from dancing and singing to Punch and

Judy! Well done to all of the hard working

committee members who made 2010 Auckley

Show such a success. Auckley show continued on p8.

Auckley Show 2010 declared a total success,

with what must have been a record turnout,

the show ground was buzzing with families

and friends from near and far enjoying a true

community annual get together. The bonus

was the weather which was kind, a damp

start turned into brilliant sunshine.

We are only a small committee so planning well

ahead was the key to success. All the committee

has worked so hard during the previous 12 months

on their various projects and I, as Chairman, am

proud to be part of a great team. We also had

helpers on the day which we thank. A special

mention should go to the 1053 Squadron Air

Cadets based in Armthorpe. There have been so

many comments of how smart, professional,

efficient and helpful they all were. Their main duty

was the car park, all the car parking areas were full

to capacity, and I don’t know what we would have

done without them. We have good feedback also

from residents that the streets were not blocked

up. Well done 1053 Sqd.

The exhibits were well up again on last year, a total

of 586 entries were judged. I was glad the new

eggseedingly good class was supported with eggs,

the wines and beers proved popular also with 29

entries.

It was just amazing to see how all the youngsters

were captivated by Mr Magic’s good old fashioned

Punch and Judy. They also enjoyed and had great

fun in the children’s sports; the mums enjoyed it

too with the space hopper race.

The Eagle and Child staff was once again stretched

to the limit as more than ever sampled the many

real ales on offer. It was good to taste once again

our ‘Auckley Showstopper Ale’. The Eagle and

Child won the tug of War for the first time. A full

list of all winners of the show’s events will be

published in the October Issue of the Arrow and

will soon appear with photographs on our web site

www.auckleyshow.co.uk.

The new second marquee used for the arts and

craft was a brilliant idea which relieved the

pressure in the main entertainment marquee. I

hope we can afford to provide this again next year.

Friday night’s Auckley Show’s got talent was well

attended and the Saturday night Dance was a sell

out.

The committee meet in the Parish Centre at

Auckley every 3rd Wednesday of the month. If you

would like to get involved come along and meet

the team, share your ideas for the 2011 Auckley

Show.

A very big THANKYOU to all who provided prizes

for tombola and raffle and helped out to make

Auckley Show special.

‘May the sun continue to shine’

Regards

Neil Woodward

Finningley Neighbourhood Watch

We are happy to report that our membership has significantly increased

over the past 3 or 4 weeks bringing the total to 345 thanks to Mrs

Maureen Gofton and our chairperson Mrs Dorothy Pidcock. We now

have more than 50% of the properties in the Village registered with us together with a

few from Blaxton. It is easy to join if you are still not a member. Just call 770873 (Mrs Dorothy

Pidcock) or 771574 (Keith Robinson) to register. It will cost you just £1 to join and £1 per year

subscription thereafter. In return you will

receive a quarterly newsletter and an

invite to our quarterly meetings, usually

attended by our beat manager, Julie.

There have been quite significant changes

to the way in which local villages are now

policed. They used to come under the

Safer Neighbourhood Team based at

Robin Hood Airport, but due to increased

airport traffic the responsibility for policing our villages has been transferred

to Rossington and as far as we are

concerned policed by 2 PCs and 3 PCSOs

The officer responsible for Finningley and

Blaxton is PC Julie Gibbon.

Crime remains very low in this area but

the summer has seen a number of hanging

baskets being stolen and a set of newly

purchased garden furniture. The advice

from the Police is to lock up what you can

when not in use and don’t forget to set

your alarm at bedtime if at all possible.

There has been a case recently of a break

in whilst the occupants were asleep.

Goods were removed from the property.

Following the successful appeal by

Persimmon Homes (South Yorkshire)

Ltd to develop the Manor Farm area

the Cantley with Branton parish

council has considered the

implications of the scale of the

proposed development and the

appropriateness of the existing parish

boundary.

The current parish stretches from Old

Cantley through to Branton just beyond

the A614 and to the river Torne at Auckley

Bridge. It also includes the area of

Bessacarr along Warning Tongue Lane to

the east and part of Warning Tongue Lane

to the west from the railway line beyond

Bawtry Road containing the Manor Farm

area up to Rossington Bridge and almost to

Potteric Carr Nature Reserve. Many of

the boundary lines follow the main drainage system and so are not easy to describe in detail.

The parish currently has 1,157 dwelling and

around 2,282 electors.

The proposal to build in the region of

1,100 homes, a retirement village of around

250 homes, plus associated facilities would

therefore double the number of residents

in the parish consequently impacting on the

role and responsibilities of the parish

council.

Information has therefore again been

sought as to whether it is possible to revise

the boundary of the parish and the

procedures required to undertake this. At

the moment Doncaster Council has no

plans to conduct any reviews but the

Local Government and Public

Involvement in Health Act 2007

introduced provisions for a boundary

review to be undertaken following the

submission of a Community Governance

Petition.

If you wish to request a

review of the boundary

The community Governance Petition needs

to be signed by at least 250 electors of the

Parish based on the current number of

electors.

The petition must define the area to which

the review relates (whether by maps or

otherwise) & must specify one or more

recommendations which the petitioners

wishes the review to consider making.

Once a valid petition has been

submitted DMBC must, with certain

exceptions, conduct a review, in view of

the length of time to complete the

procedure the earliest any changes

made as a consequence of the review

could take effect would be at the Parish

Elections to be held in May 2015. The

review procedure provides a range of

options to be considered including to

make no change.

There are of course implications arising out

of any change and the extent of any

boundary change could impact on the

amount of precept paid by individual

householders. In the event that the

boundary was revised to remove only the

area of Manor Farm then the effect on the

precept would be minimal as there only a

very small number of dwellings situated on

Warren Lane and the south of Bawtry

Road. To revise the boundary for example

to the centre of Warning Tongue Lane and

Bawtry Road would have a greater impact

as this would remove properties e.g. those

on Bawtry Road, Warnington Drive and

Plantation Avenue and the west of Warning

Tongue Lane.

An increase in the number of electors

would reduce the amount of precept paid

by each individual household for the

provision of similar services.

Conversely an increase in the number of

electors would reduce the amount of

precept paid by each individual household

for the provision of similar services.

Alternatively if the precept remained at the

current rate this would raise more revenue

and enable the parish council to provide

additional services for the benefit of the

parish.

Residents are asked to consider

this information and to decide if it

is felt that a review of the parish

boundary would be appropriate.

After working hard all year Class 6 were greatly looking forward to their residential

visit at Marrick Priory. Marrick Priory is a licensed activity centre in beautiful

countryside near Richmond, and our school has been leading successful residential visits

there for over twenty five years!

During the week Class 6 enjoyed taking part in a variety of outdoor and adventurous

activities. A huge part of the week was working together as a team and supporting each

other to try out new challenges and Class 6 did this really

well. The children took part in team building exercises,

orienteering, rock climbing and abseiling, kayaking, archery,

a variety of activities on the ropes course, a long day walk

and the list goes on! On the Thursday evening a campfire

with songs and certificates for everyone brought the week

to a great conclusion. What a way to finish seven years at

Branton St Wilfrid’s C.E. Primary School!

We hope our former Year 6 pupils will enjoy their new

secondary schools and hope they will keep in touch to tell

us about their successes in the future.

Best Wishes

While I was collecting a supply wild bird

food from Andy and Jacquie Shearmans bird

food outlet at their home

‘THIE GENNAL’, Mosham Road , Blaxton, I

was delighted to get this photo of a swallow

feeding its young, in its nest built upon their

front door light. The parent birds were quite

oblivious to our presence, as they went

about their business.

The Swallow (Hirundo rustica). Both sexes

build a saucer-shaped nest of mud and dried

grasses lined with feathers, usually on a ledge or rafter in buildings, they lay 3-6 white eggs, heavily

speckled with red-brown markings, between May and August. Swallows feed on flying insects including

dragonflies and butterflies, so it was not Andy and Jacquie’s bird food that attracted them. Have you any

unusual bird nesting photos?

Branton House Query You might recollect a couple of months ago we had Cynthia Scully asking why

there was a house on the south side of the main road through Branton facing away from the road and thus

being out of line with all the other housing on that side. Well Sarah Munday has found the answer.

―I saw the question about the house that faces the wrong way in Branton. I have spoken to a farmer

(Norman) who lives in Branton, he told me that the house owned the fields where the bungalows are

built. They kept horses there, which were used to transport liquid paraffin that they sold for lamps etc. So

the house was built that way to overlook the fields’.

Branton and Cantley Cricket Club Colin Wood of Branton tells me that the cricket field only had

two homes A/ in the field behind the Old Cantley Primary School and B/ in the field to the east of St

Wilfred’s Church. He also tells me that there was a wooden Village Dance Hall, just off Warning Tongue

Lane in the area of the present Catholic Convent.

With further reference to the cricket club Alan Lindley writes;

‘I first played for Cantley & Branton in 1957 aged 14, in friendly matches. My first league match was the

first game of the 1958 season away to Sprotbrough. The field at Cantley was indeed owned by Mr Davies

who was club president. The rule regarding the tree was as you stated except that you scored 4 not 2 for

hitting it, regardless of hitting the trunk or just a leaf. Strangely the tree didn’t get hit very often. The

changing rooms were two old rail freight wagons. Horses and sometimes cows were kept on the field,

being kept off the square by an electric fence. The players had to remove the fence and go round with

bucket and shovel cleaning up the outer field before play could start. I last played on the ground in 1966,

having topped the batting averages in 1964. The captain during my time there was a Branton farmer

named Ken Turner. The headmaster of Old Cantley school, Gerry Walls, also played. The mainstay of the

club however was Roy Wood from Auckley. He was groundsman, odd job man, fixture secretary and

anything else that needed doing. His wife was roped in to help with the teas. I moved back to Auckley in

1977 and the club was playing home games then at Cantley Park then, but I think it folded about 1980.’

Dear readers, The government has made the standard Driving Test more d ifficult in recent years, with the addition of a

multiple-choice test and a computerised hazard-awareness assessment.

However it still only involves learning the most fundamental driving skills and doesn’t include p reparation

for poor-weather or motorway driv ing. The standard L-test is simply an introduction to driv ing a vehicle.

Your further education takes place on today’s congested roads and provides a steep and often precarious

learning curve, this is where Driver education comes in.

On the U/K’s congested roads it’s important that you’re always in the right frame of mind to drive. A

positive attitude will help to reduce the risk of collisions through tolerance and courtesy , by being realistic

as to your own abilit ies, and by maintaining a high degree of ca re for your own safety and others.

Driv ing on UK roads can be very st ressful, but you must always remain cool-headed tolerant and

courteous–helping to avoid or diffuse any threatening situations.

Don’t let your driving standards be affected by other motorist ’s mistakes or behaviour.

Stay relaxed , don’t be provoked and remember that, if you do make a mistake an apologetic wave is often

all it takes to put things right.

Don’t let your enthusiasm for driving tempt you into breaking the speed limit or driving dangerously

always know what speed you are doing and know what the maximum speed limit is. Remember timid

drivers can be as dangerous as aggressive d rivers.

Always expect the worst from other motorist s and try to understand what they are aiming to achieve. If

you allow for poor observation and slow reactions, you’ll find you’re always prepared for the worst-case

scenario.

Whether you’re a novice motorist or an experienced driver, you’ll always find room to improve your

driving skills. Keep an open mind, be realistic about your limitations and always be prepared to learn f rom

any errors you make.

When following other drivers, always apply the two-second rule if you suspect they may not be totally

focused on their driv ing, leave an even bigger gap to give you extra b raking time. Tailgating is a common

cause of collisions, it is dangerous and antisocia l and can never be condoned .

The Driving Position. One of the most important aspects of driving a modern machine involves achieving the perfect driving posit ion

every time you get behind the wheel . This allows you maximum control over your vehicle and wi ll keep you more

comfortable and ale rt on longer journey’s It’s also the position most often adopted by racing drive rs, especial ly rally

and touring car drive rs.

Sit in the car with the base of your spine in the back of the seat to prevent back problems.

Hold the wheel at ten-to-two or quarter-to-three. Keep your thumbs vertical .

Whenever possible adjus t the s teering wheel rake for improved control and to enable you to see all the dashboard

instruments .

Make sure your arms are slightly bent.

Your legs should be slightly bent too when your feet are on the pedals.

The back of the seat should be fairly upright giving you a good view of the road ahead, mirrors, display and dials.

Ensure that head restraints are adjusted so that they align with the top of you head.

If you are interested in further information regarding the courses that we offer, you ’ll be able to find this

informat ion on the Institute of Advanced Motorists website at www.iam.org .uk or Tel: 020 8996 9600
