Spring is sure acting strange this year but, as usual the fi rst order of business will

be to rake the lawn. Obviously raking removes all the twigs, branches and pinecones from

the lawn but there are other benefi ts. Raking will fl uff up the matted blades of grass. This

allows air to dry the old blades of grass, which lessen the chances of a fungal disease taking

hold. A raked lawn will also warm up quicker and get the grass growing sooner.

Another benefi t of spring raking is the chance to get reacquainted with our yard and

take note of areas that are thin and might need extra attention. I like to rough up thin areas

and put down grass right away. It’s too cold for the seed to germinate but the cold won’t

hurt the seed. By putting the seed down now, it will have a chance to get all pumped up with

moisture so it will germinate as soon as temperatures are right. This will give the young grass

as much time as possible to establish a root system before hot summer weather arrives (now

there’s a nice thought).

Another project that I like to tackle early is feeding all the permanent members of

my garden community: the trees, shrubs and perennials. You might be thinking, “Nothing

out there is really growing yet! Why should I feed plants that show no signs of life?” A

valid question. The reason I like to get these woody and perennial plants fed early is this: the

granular fertilizers and tree food spikes that I’ll use take some time to dissolve and perme-

ate the soil. When you get the food into the soil early, it will have plenty of time and spring

rain to dissolve and soak into the soil. When the plants get the warmth they need to spring

into growth, the nutrients they need will already be there waiting for them. Since our garden

plants have depleted a great deal of their reserve energy just surviving the winter, they need

nutrients more in the early spring than at any other time of year.

For trees and large shrubs, an easy way to apply nutrients is by pounding in some

of those tree food spikes that are made of compressed fertilizer. When you go to the garden

center, you’ll notice that there are different formulas for different plants. The spikes for ever-

greens and shade trees are higher in nitrogen and those for fruit tree are higher in phosphorus

to enhance fruit production. You may have large, fl owering shrubs like lilacs that you want

to feed with spikes. The fruit tree spikes, with their higher phosphorus formula would make

them appropriate for use on fl owering shrubs as well. Be careful to follow the directions

when using fertilizer spikes. They should be driven into the ground AWAY from the trunk

or stem of the plant you’re feeding. The tiny roots that take up the nutrients are about the

same distance from the trunk as the outermost branch tips. For trees, it’s easy to fi gure out

where to place the spikes. Simply walk away from the trunk until you are standing under the

outermost branch tips and pound in the spikes at that circumference. How many spikes you’ll

need to use is determined by the diameter of the trunk. There are directions on the package.

Follow them. More isn’t necessarily better. If you use too many spikes or place them too

close to the trunk, you may do more harm than good.

For smaller shrubs and perennials, you’ll want to use a gentle, granular food. I like

the Espoma products. You can pound holes around small shrubs (under the outermost branch

tips) and pour the appropriate amount of plant food into them. When in doubt, less is best.

On the perennials, I’ll dig a shallow trench well away from the crown of the plant and apply a

modest amount of gentle Espoma Flower-tone plant food. Follow the recommendations on

the package and, again, when in doubt, less is best.

If you can get out there at the fi rst opportunity and get your nutrients into the soil

early, your landscape plants will be able to take advantage of them and have the best season

possible. Thanks for the read.

Lecture and Book Signing ROTTERDAM JCT. – Written by Robert Moss, “The Interpreter” (now in paperback) is the third in the Cycle of the Iroquois trilogy. On Saturday, March 31, at 2pm, Moss will speak about “The Interpreter” and sign copies of all three books in the trilogy at the Mabee Farm Historic Site on Route 5S in Rotterdam Junction. The work is a visionary journey into the crucible in which America was born and a tale of love and war that shares the story of a master shaman and his twin apprentices - the Mohawk dreamer called Island Woman and the young immigrant Conrad Weise - who become critical players in their peoples’ struggle for survival. Through its pages, we are able to fi nd ourselves in another time, and in other worlds. Known for his vivid storytelling, Moss, a novelist, journalist, historian, and lifelong dream explorer, describes in his new preface how his Cycle of the Iroquois - Fire Along the Sky, The Firekeeper, and The Interpreter - began with dreams and visions in which an ancient Iroquois arendiwanen (woman of power) insisted on teaching him in her own language, until he was obliged to learn it. Call 887-5073 for more information. $5 per person; Schenectady County Historical Society members admitted free. (A)

(MS) -- Whether the kids have all grown up and moved out or if the kids are on the way and it’s time to expand a living area, building a new home is an exciting, yet often agonizing, experience. The reasons for building a new home are many, but regardless of the reason, the process of choosing a builder should remain the same.

* Look for a builder with a solid reputation. A builder’s reputation speaks volumes, but it doesn’t have to speak for istself. That’s because a builder who has spent years providing personal service, innovative design and quality workmanship will no doubt have a host of happy former customers ready and willing to offer their in-put. If during the interview process a builder appears reticent to share his work or experiences with pre-vious customers, this should be a red fl ag. Reputable builders will be proud of their work and more than willing to show it off.

* Find a builder who is fl exible.

How to choose a builderYou will be paying to build your home, not the builder’s home. A builder should be fl exible and ready and willing to meet your needs, no matter how unique they might be.

* Look for a builder who does more than build. A good builder should do more than just build. A builder should provide a network of qualifi ed professionals to make the process go more smoothly. This network should include real estate and building consultants, interior designers, architects and engineers. Such connections can provide peace of mind and will also illustrate that a builder is both respected in the community and is intent on ensuring your home becomes the dream home you envision it to be.

* Don’t build on the cheap. Buy-ers who plan to build their own home are in the unique position to ensure their home is as safe and high-quality as possible. This isn’t always the case when buying a re-

sale, so make the most of your op-

portunity and use only top-of-the-

line construction materials and

features and choose a builder with

experience in working with such

materials and features. Building

on the cheap could prove disas-

trous in the not too distant future,

so don’t sacrifi ce on quality when

building a new home.

“How can I think outside the box when I work inside a cube?” -- Unknown

Since its inception around 40 years ago, the cubicle has been a mainstay of offi ce decor. Love it or loathe it, many companies still employ the segregated design of cubicles to outfi t their buildings and provide a measure of per-sonal space for employees.

Before the advent of cubicles, most offi ce workers were lined up rather rigidly in desks in one open space. Those who held higher positions in the organiza-tion may have had a private of-fi ce. Robert Probst, a research director at the home-furnishings company Herman Miller in Zee-land, Mich., came up with the concept of the “Action Offi ce” in the late 1960s. His system was designed to increase productivity of workers. It consisted of a vari-ety of work surfaces and shelves

that could display paperwork and other work items. This was before the desktop computer became an essential element of offi ces across the globe. Partitions were part of the design, offering some semblance of privacy and a place to post work in progress. Desks varied in height so that workers could stand up and stretch while working.

In theory, the Action Offi ce had merit, but soon plain old econom-ics changed cubicles into what they would become -- inexpen-sive means of housing employees in a relatively small amount of space.

To stimulate business spending in the 1960s, the United States Trea-sury established new rules for de-preciating assets. They stated that offi ces with permanent structures depreciated after 39.5 years. Of-fi ce furniture would depreciate -- and need to be replaced -- in just

seven years. Therefore, a compa-ny could recover costs faster if it purchased a cubicle-type system, and this factor quickly became a new selling point for Probst’s Ac-tion Offi ce systems. Probst’s orig-inal design was meant to be fl ex-ible and moveable. But cubicles, once erected, rarely moved. And soon companies packed them into whatever space they had.

Although there have been upris-ings to thwart the cubicle lifestyle within the offi ce environment -- most unsuccessful -- one of the more recent threats to cubicle life is the growing popularity of working from home or from other areas, such as coffee shops or ar-eas with WiFi service. Some of-fi ce cubicles remain vacant most of the week thanks to mobile technology and fl exible bosses who allow work to get done any-where as long as productivity is not sacrifi ced.

For those who still spend consid-erable time inside of a cubicle, here are some suggestions for making it your own.

* Add small decor touches, like a landscape photo or a portrait of your family.

* Put up diplomas or certifi cates of merit, especially if customers or clients will be visiting you at your cubicle.

* Plants can boost your mood and add a bit of life and color to the offi ce. They also help liven up stale offi ce air. Many plants thrive under fl uorescent lights, a staple of offi ce living.

* Place a candy dish out so that coworkers will stop by and visit for a few minutes.

* Hang up a brainteaser or word of the day calendar to help keep your mind sharp. CB11A316
