PRAYER TO THE BLESSED VIRGIN (Never known to fail). Oh, most beautiful flower of Mt. Carmel, fruitful vine splendor of Heaven, Blessed Mother of the Son of God, Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. Oh, Star of the Sea, help me and show me, herein you are my mother. Oh, Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth, I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to answer me in this necessity. There are none that can withstand your power. Oh, show me herein you are my mother. Oh, Mary conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee (3x). Holy Mother, I place this cause in your hands (3x). Sweet mother, I place this cause in your hands (3x). Holy Spirit, you who solve all problems, light all roads so that I can attain my goal, you who gave me the divine gift to forgive and forget all evil against me and that in all instances in my life you are with me, I want in this short prayer to thank you for all things as you confirm once again that I never want to be separated from you in eternal glory. Thank you for your mercy towards me and mine. The person must say this prayer 3 consecutive days, after 3 days the request will be granted. This prayer must be published after the favor is granted. Favor granted. C.M.S.

It’s this Moment

Comes a time on Christmas Eve

When all the gifts are bought

And wrapped and tied with shiny

Bows and placed beneath the tree.

Shops are closed,

Locked up tight.

Even merchants hurry home

On this enchanted night.

A glass of wine perhaps a kiss

Beneath the mistletoe.

Evening fades as night begins

And children dream of gifts.

Late that night stillness comes

Magic spills over the land

As every creature of the earth

Feels the promise of The Son.

Humblest home and greatest hall

Are wrapped in a mother’s love.

It’s this moment I hold most dear

When peace fills the hearts of all.

Merry Christmas Everyone!

JCC Jewish Film FestivalNISKAYUNA – The Human Resources Manager will be the next film at the Schenectady JCC Jewish Film Festival on Sat-urday, December 22, 7:30pm. This recent Israeli drama was made in 2010 and is 103 minutes long. The film is in Hebrew and Rumanian with English subtitles. It was Israel’s 2011 of-ficial Oscar entry. Rabbi Ted Lichtenfeld will be the guest speaker. A self-centered Human Resources Manager of a Jeru-salem bakery faces accusations of indifference when a foreign female worker is killed in a terror attack. On his mission to make amends and return her for burial in remote, wintery Ro-mania, he encounters her ex-husband, an obnoxious journalist, and a bizarre hearse. In this tragic-comic road trip of the heart, a modern Israeli man discovers his lost humanity and ability to truly care for human resources. Cost: $9; $5 for members; and $3 for students. Refreshments and sweet kugel included. The Robert and Dorothy Ludwig Schenectady Jewish Com-munity Center is located at 2565 Balltown Road, Niskayuna. For more information, please contact Jewish Cultural Director, Irit Magnes at 377-8803 x235 or [email protected] (P)

SPECIALSTablet computer shopping tipsTablets are the must-have portable computing device of the moment, making them a top holiday gift. In just a few short years, the number of people with tablets has increased dramatically.

Within a year of the iPad’s introduction into the tech-nological lexicon, 11 percent of Americans already owned one. As other tablets and upgraded versions of the iPad entered the market, tablets became more and more popular.

A study from the Pew Research Center’s Project for Ex-cellence in Journalism in collaboration with The Econ-omist Group found that the majority of tablet owners (77 percent) use their tablets every day, using them for an average of about 90 minutes.

When shopping for a tablet, there are many different features to consider.

Size

Tablets come in different sizes, weights and screen of-ferings. When the iPad was released, it set the standard screen size at around 10 inches, weighing slightly more than a pound. Tablets made by other manufacturers range in sizes from 12-inch screens to 5-inch screens, giving shoppers the ability to choose a device that is as mobile as they need it to be.

Battery Life

Many tablet users are interested in the portability of the device. Battery operation makes that portability pos-sible, so it makes sense that battery life is a big draw for consumers. Many tablet reviews citeAndroid products and the iPad as the best for battery life.

Flexibility

Flexibility is also important to prospective tablet buy-ers. Tablets that are only able to connect to the Internet via a Wi-Fi service will be much more limited in use. Many tablets now come with 3G or Wi-Fi capabilities, enabling the device to work even when you are away from home or a Wi-Fi connection.

Storage

Some consumers are interested in the amount of data they can store on their tablets. Some reviewers have complained about the inability to add more storage space to the Apple iPad, forcing consumers to purchase a more expensive device just to add more storage. An-droid and Windows-based tablets have removable stor-age options and may be better buys for those who need to save a large number of apps or photos and video.

Price

As with any purchase, price is often a big component of decision-making. Therefore, the tablet that offers the most features at the most affordable price may win out.

HOLIDAY SAVINGS AT...

Did you know?The first Christmas tree at Rockefeller Center was erected in 1931, two years before the opening of Rockefeller Pla-za, where the tree now draws thousands of tourists each year. The tradition began when construction workers hard at work on building Rockefeller Center decorated a rough-ly 20-foot tall balsam fir tree on Christmas Eve in 1931. Strings of cranberries and tin cans were among the items used to decorate the tree. While there was no tree in 1932, the first official tree was unveiled in 1933 in Rockefeller Plaza, and the lighting ceremony was broadcast over NBC Radio. The 1933 tree, at 50 feet tall, dwarfed the 1931 tree. However, the 1933 tree paled in comparison to the 10-ton Norway Spruce erected in 1999, which measured 100-feet tall and remains the tallest tree ever erected at Rockefeller Center. The tradition of the Rockefeller Cen-ter tree continues to evolve to this day, but the evergreen it is no longer lit with incandescent light bulbs. LED bulbs that consume a fraction of the energy of traditional bulbs are the bulbs of choice now. In addition, in 2007 Rock-efeller Center partnered with Habitat for Humanity, who used the tree after it was taken down to furnish lumber for home construction.

Out-of-the-box themes for your holiday partyParties are an integral part of the holiday season, when friends and family gather to celebrate and give thanks. For holiday hosts, parties are a great opportunity to make the season even more festive with an event that guests won’t soon forget. The following are just a few themes to make your holiday party as memorable as it is merry.* Christmas sweater party: Christmas sweater parties have grown in popularity over the last decade, when revelers have tried to outdo one another with the most outrageous holiday-themed sweater. Give prizes for the most outlandish sweater and let guests know early on so they can begin their hunt for a holiday sweater that’s so ugly or outrageous you can’t help but love it.* Christmas costume party: Costume parties aren’t just for Halloween. This holiday season, consider making your holiday bash a costume party, encouraging guests to dress up as their favorite characters from holiday tales like “Frosty the Snowman,” “A Christmas Carol” or any of the host of beloved holiday legends.* Caribbean Christmas: The weather come the holiday season may be the one thing to put a damper on the festivities. To combat blue feelings from potentially inclement weather, consider a Caribbean theme for your holiday party this season. Rather than wearing sweaters and long pants, wear beach attire and give the party a touch of the Caribbean. Outfit your home in beach decor and serve food and drinks remi-niscent of the Caribbean instead of more traditional holiday fare like eggnog and gingerbread cookies.* Film festival: Holiday movies are another tradition of the season, so why not invite friends and family over for a holiday film marathon? Include classics like “It’s a Wonderful Life” and “A Christmas Story” and encourage guests to submit their own favorites for consideration. * Christmas karaoke: For those who love to belt out their favorite holiday tunes, consider throwing a Christmas karaoke party that allows guests to perform their own renditions of their favorite Christmas carols. Purchase a home karaoke set and ask guests in advance of the party if there are any particular songs they’d like to perform.

Did you know?Many area shopping malls offer some method of transportation between tourist sites or transportation hubs. For shoppers looking to avoid the hassles of finding a parking space at malls and shopping centers, shuttle buses may be the answer. For example, the Mall of America in Minneapolis offers free shuttle service between the stores and around 50 hotels in the vicinity. To investigate the possibilities of transportation to a mall near you, visit the mall’s information kiosk during your next visit and inquire as to whether a shuttle van or bus is available. Also, you may con-tact local bus companies to find out whether there is a free or paid shuttle available. Typically, these will be stationed at park-and-rides or in large parking lots. The bus will pick up and deliver you to the same location. Seniors may be entitled to complementary busing to the mall courtesy of municipal senior busing systems or accessible ride programs.

Few things make holiday shoppers happier than giving a gift that instantly lights up a loved one’s eyes. All the work that goes into finding and securing the perfect gift becomes worth it and then some when the recipient’s smile stretches from ear to ear.

A great holiday gift often involves someone’s favorite hobby. When gifting the family sports fan, the options are endless. Sports fans tend to wear their hearts on their sleeves, and they’re liable to be just as vocal with appreciation if any of these gifts are waiting under the tree for them this holiday sea-son.

* Magazine subscription: Many sports fans feel they can never get enough information on their favorite teams and sports. A magazine subscrip-tion to Sports Illustrated or another periodical focusing on a particular sport can provide insider access for a year or longer. Magazine subscrip-tions are typically inexpensive, but they provide lots of bang for your gifting buck, especially weekly publications. In addition, many maga-zines now give print subscribers access to ex-clusive content online, playing to your favorite sports fan’s ever-growing desire for more knowledge.

* Sports apparel: According to IBISWorld, a California-based market research firm, online sporting apparel sales were ex-pected to approach $5 billion in 2012. Driving those sales are sports fans who can’t wait to don the gear of their favor-ite teams. Apparel makes a great holiday gift, whether it’s an authentic player jersey, a team logo hoodie or a personalized T-shirt that directly connects fans to their teams.

Gifts no sports fan should go without

* Memorabilia: Sports memorabilia can be costly, but shop-pers can still find great deals on everything from autographed items to relics of a franchise’s fledgling days. When shopping for memorabilia, be wary of auctions, where “shill bidding”

can drive up the price of coveted items. Shill bidding occurs when owners bid on their own items at auction in an attempt to drive up the sale price. And authentication can be an issue with regard to sports memorabilia. The Fed-eral Bureau of Investigation has been cracking down on fraudulent memorabilia. Shoppers without knowledge of the memorabilia in-dustry might want to focus on less expensive items that will be a hit under the tree but won’t be a hit to their bank accounts.

* Video games: Many sports fans indulge in their love of a favorite sport by playing video games. Like most technology, video games are consistently reinvented, so last year’s

game might already be out-dated, making video games an ideal holiday gift. Those who want to go the extra mile can include a new gaming console along with the latest video game.

* Tickets: Of course, sports

fans might like nothing more than tickets to see their favor-ite teams play. Buying directly from a sports team is a safe bet, but it can also be expensive. Savvy shoppers can ex-plore the legal secondary market, which includes online re-tailers like StubHub.com or even league-affiliated programs like NFLTicket Exchange, where they might find more af-fordable tickets. When gifting tickets, do so far enough in advance of the game so fans have time to plan their trip and, if need be, take a day off from work.

Do good by donating older giftsThe holiday season is one firmly ensconced in the tradition of exchanging gifts. To address storage issues, some families choose to make charitable donations of some of their past holiday finery in preparation for the arrival of new gifts and goodies.

The average person has many belongings he or she may not need. According to the Self Storage Association, there are 2.3 billion square feet designated to self-storage space in the United States, and one out of every 10 households in the country rents a unit. Many financial analysts say that the self-storage industry is essentially recession-proof. That’s because once a person moves items into storage, they’re not likely to move it out anytime soon.

Many of the items relegated to self-storage units across the nation could be holiday gifts from years past. But rather than store items that will never see the light of day, why not help a good cause and donate such items to charity?

Make it a tradition

Families can make donating items prior to the holidays a tradition so that it is something that ev-eryone anticipates and looks forward to.

Much as you would decorate the home or shop for fancy holiday clothing, you can set aside a day for sorting through infrequently used items and preparing them for donation. Doing so can teach children the benefits of generosity, which often goes hand-in-hand with the season.

Work with an organization

There are certain organizations that gather used or new toys and other items to give to the less fortunate. Begin with churches and synagogues and inquire if they sponsor or host a collection program. Schools also may hold item swaps to help raise money for parent-teacher associations or to donate to charities.

If you cannot find an organization that serves as the middleman for donations, take it upon yourself to solicit safe houses, hospitals, veteran groups and more to see if they will accept your items.

Set limits on new gifts

Encourage family members to give back while gifting as well. While one or two new items will be appreciated, you may want to specify that donations to charities that you support, or helping to fund extracurricular activities, is your preference.

Allergic conjunctivitis is the most common allergic eye prob-lem. Although the condition is often associated with hay fever, many things can trigger the signs and symptoms of allergic con-junctivitis. The main cause, of course is pollens, but many indoor al-lergens such as dust mites, molds, and dander from household pets such as cats and dogs may affect the eyes year-round. And this time of year, with Christmas trees brought inside, and dusty decorations taken out of dustier storage areas, allergy flare-ups are quite common. Typical complaints include itching, redness, tearing, burning, watery discharge, and eyelid swelling. (Rub-bing itchy eyes is a natural response, however rubbing usually worsens the allergic reaction. Applying cool, wet compresses to the eyes will help calm the itch.) The treatment of choice generally is topical antihistamine drops such as Zaditor, Patanol, Bepreve or Lastacraft. Of these, only Zaditor is OTC; the rest require a prescription, and many do not have generics. Your optometrist will know which one is right for you. In some cases topical steroid drops may be needed, but should only be used if prescribed by your doctor for severe reactions and on short-term basis because of the po-tential for side effects.“Like” Dr. Cusma on Facebook.

Albany, NY (October 15, 2012) –Do you have a love for animals and want to support a great local cause? Join with the Goldstein Auto Group and bring your empty bottles and cans to a Goldstein dealership and support the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society. The Mohawk Hudson Humane Society’s “Empties For Animals” campaign helps support the mis-sion of the organization, including sheltering, adoption, education, advocacy and the prevention of cruelty to animals. This year’s goal is to raise $125,000, in honor of the Society’s 125th Anniversary. To reach the goal, the Goldstein Auto Group will need to collect more than 1,500,000 cans and bottles. The 2012 "Emp-ties For Animals” campaign has raised over $73,000 thru Sept. 2012, an increase of $17,638 or 33% over the same period last year. The 2011 campaign raised a total of more than $74,000 and collected 925,000 cans and bottles. Volunteers sorted all those bottles and cans, based on the originating dis-tributor, which in turn generated $.08 per can or bottle instead of the regular $.05 redemption fee paid at stores. Monies from the program were used to benefit the more than 6,500 animals cared for by the Society in 2011. “We are very pleased to continue our partnership with the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society and support the 2012 “Empties For Animals” campaign. We would like to thank all of our customers and the members of the community who have generously donated to such a worthy cause,” said Alan Goldstein, President of Goldstein Auto Group.

Rare British Naval Jet Fighter Comes to ESAMGLENVILLE – The Empire State Aerosciences Museum is proud to announce the acquisition of an extremely rare jet fighter. British authorities at the Fleet Air Arm Museum, Yeovilton, England, have agreed to the transfer of one of only three remaining Supermarine Scimitar F.1 strike fighters from the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum to the care of ESAM. Powered by two Rolls-Royce Avon 202 un-reheated turbojets, each of 11,250 lbs. thrust, the Scimitar was supersonic in a shallow dive. Serving only with the Royal Navy-- Nos. 700, 736, 800, 803, 804, 807 Squadrons and the Fleet Requirements Unit—the Scimitar was soon overtaken, technically, by other jets. It was withdrawn from front-line service in 1966. ESAM’s example is one of just three survivors from a production run of 76 (the other two aircraft are both in museums in England), so it represents a rare chance to see an early generation jet fighter. For more information, call 377-2191 x10. (A)

Riding a bicycle is beneficial for many reasons. Not only does riding a bicycle reduce the number of cars on the road, but such an activity is also great exercise. However, when riding bicy-cles, cyclists must keep in mind that the rules of the road that apply to cars do also extend to bicycles.

In many areas of the country, bicycles are subject to the same rules as other two- and four-wheeled vehicles. That includes yielding to pedestrians and obeying signage. Other rules in-clude:

* riding on the correct side with traffic;

* when turning, always using the turning lane;

* obeying traffic signs, lights and road markings; and

* using correct hand signals.

Not every cyclist obeys the rules. In many major cities, cyclists routinely ignore traffic lights while repeatedly failing to make proper hand signals. That’s especially disconcerting in cities like New York, where special bike lanes have become the norm on some of the city’s busiest streets.

Sharing the road safely remains a concern for motorists, cy-clists and pedestrians. If bicycle riders do their part to obey the rules of the road, fewer altercations and accidents may occur.

Rules of the road apply to cyclists, too
