Dear Friends,As the mercury climbs in Phoenix, approximating the temperature onthe planet Mercury, many of us areplanning for the summer. Somewill find refuge in air conditionedspaces while others may travel tocooler climates. Whenever Debbiand I have vacationed in moretemperate climates like Flagstaff orSan Diego, we always seem tobump into congregants.
Over the years, I have been grateful for the periodic sab-baticals that have been granted to me by Beth ElCongregation, giving me the time to ‘recharge my bat-teries’ for a job which can be as demanding as it is mean-ingful. This year I will be taking such a break.Hopefully when I return to Beth El and my pulpit inmid-August, I will be fully renewed and able to serveyou, my beloved congregation, with complete andrenewed vigor.
My travels will take me far and wide in the comingmonths. I will be traveling to Thailand and Cambodia(I have already found a synagogue to attend in Bangkok)and then plan on visiting my son in Minnesota andspending time with my sister and her family in NewYork. Debbi and I will continue to golf in states wherewe have yet to do so (we have 16 more to go) and we willtry to cool off in Northern Arizona towards the end ofmy time off.
So, what happens at Beth El when the rabbi is away dur-ing the summer? Thankfully, most things will continueas usual. While there are fewer activities, classes andmeetings during the summer, we continue to have dailyMinyanim (morning and night) and we can always useyour help. Cantor Angress has graciously agreed to sub-stitute for me in case, God forbid, someone takes ill orpasses away. And we have a wonderful group of lay peo-ple who have volunteered to deliver Divrei Torah (hom-ilies, or sermons) in my place while I am gone.Regarding our weekly e-mail blast, the Billboard, we willbe publishing articles about the weekly Torah Portionfrom faculty members at the Jewish TheologicalSeminary in New York and the Ziegler School ofRabbinic Studies in Los Angeles. We will be distribut-ing these articles with the express permission of theseinstitutions and I hope that you will all learn from someof the luminaries of the Conservative Movement.
When I was a student at a Yeshiva in New York, Iremember that our school principal, Rabbi Fendel, spoke to us at an assembly on the last day of school. Hesaid, “You may have a vacation from school, but younever have a vacation from God or Torah.” I commitnever to take a vacation from God or Torah; the staff
Arthur LavinskyRabbi
and volunteers of Beth El follow suit as they serve youyear round, and I hope that each of us will always liveour lives guided and inspired by our faith and traditions.
Truth be told, I will miss you while I am away. But Iwill look forward to my return to Phoenix in August sothat I can continue to teach, preach, and minister toyour needs. There is no job more wonderful than beingthe spiritual leader of such a loving, caring, and appre-ciative community of faith such as ours.
I wish each and every one of you a wonderful, regener-ative summer. May you spend time with people youlove, stay cool, and drink plenty of water!
L’hitraot (until we see each other again),Rabbi Arthur Lavinsky

Women’s League NewsAs summer approaches we are ending our Beth ElWomen's League year. During the summer yourWomen's League board will be meeting to plan andprepare for the coming years events, and we welcomeany Beth El women who would like to help. We havemuch to do, but it takes women to make these wonder-ful events happen. Please consider volunteering, aphone call to Alicia Moskowitz at Beth El will put youin touch with the committee you can join, or assist youin finding a one-time project you can work on. We canuse as much or as little of your time as you have to offerand we appreciate any time you can provide. On thisnote, Eileen Bloom is now in charge of our Women'sLeague donation cards and Torah Fund cards, if youneed one sent out please contact her at Beth El.
Dues for the coming year will remain at $36. By keep-ing our dues reasonable we hope it enables all Beth Elwomen to join the group. Annual membership is fromJuly 1, 2017 through June 30, 2018. This year weorganized many social and educational activities andnext year we plan to do the same. Some of the eventswe tentatively have scheduled for the coming yearinclude: a happy hour event, Rosh Hodesh events,Women's League Shabbat, speakers and several otherfun activities in the planning stages. Watch for flyers inthe echo and upcoming information in the near future.
At our annual meeting in May we announced our newtzedakah project: Project Golda, which is named after"A Woman of Valor," Golda Meir. We hope to accu-mulate gift cards and certificates donated by Beth Eland community members, then give these to individualsor families who need financial assistance. All recipientsnames will be kept confidential. Please donate gift cardsfor places such as Target, Trader Joe's, Walmart, movietheaters, restaurants, hair salons, etc. Give them Aliciaat Beth El or any of our Women's League officers. Wehope to provide a little help, a little recreational time, and some school supplies for the new school year todeserving families in our own community. Please helpus achieve this goal. When you are in the market pay-ing for your groceries, purchase an extra $5 or $10 giftcard, and you'll be performing a Mitzvah. It feels"soooo" good!

Dear Friends,As we are rapidly approaching thetoasty summer months in theValley of the Sun – and with a shortrespite from writing my article forthe echo, (this being a combinedJune/July issue) I’m thinking aboutwhat message I’d like to conveytoday. What comes to mind is thenext major happening at Beth El.It is 4 months away, but “it” hap-pens to be the big annual event in
Judaism and is already in the preliminary planning stages- - the High Holy Days. Mark your calendars folks – asErev Rosh Hashanah is September 20. Didn’t we justwish each other “L’Shana Tova” as together we cele-brated the New Year - 5777?
There is an incredible amount of preparation for theholidays so I’m delighted that we’re months away, just atsummers end…and not weeks away. As I get older, itseems that the hands on the clock are going ‘round fasterthan the year before. We were just preparing for 5777and now our fiscal year is closing (5/31) and the duesbilling for 5777-78 will be in your mailbox soon or mayalready have arrived. This is a reminder, or in the eventthat you are not aware, 50% of your membership duesshould be paid or a payment plan established with Ninain our Accounting Department before we can mail outyour tickets for the High Holy Days.
With the holidays months away, please remember ourannual Kol Nidre/Yom Kippur food drive for ICM.They count on all of us at Beth El to help fill theirpantry. This outstanding organization (ICM) helped27,000 families last year. Their statistics indicate that arecord 135,000 individuals in the valley received food, clothing, and other basic essentials. If you start stockpil-ing for them early, perhaps by Kol Nidre we can breakour previous record of 2341 pounds of food donated. How about we commit to 500 pounds more this yearthan we did last year? Think of how many more fami-lies our additional donations could feed.
Also, since I’m in High Holy Days mode, don’t forgetabout our Break-the-fast. For as long as I can remem-ber, the Rozen Family Foundation (courtesy of Marthaand Craig Rozen) has generously underwritten the costof this meal for the congregation. That will take placeimmediately after N’ila on September 30.
Enjoy your summer. Stay cool but more importantly –be well. I always look forward to seeing you but espe-cially during the holidays.
B’shalom,Anne
Anne SchaferExecutive Director
Shalom,This summer you will most likelyenjoy and participate in July 4th.One week after July 4th is the 17th ofTammuz. This is a little recognizedday in Jewish history, commemorat-ing the Roman breech of theJerusalem wall that would lead to thedestruction of the Second Temple.Tish B’ Av, three weeks later is a dayof mourning, commemorating the
destruction of not only the Second, but also the FirstTemple. (The First Temple was destroyed by theBabylonians in 586 BCE and the Second Temple bythe Romans in 70 CE. Both were on the same day ofthe Jewish month of Av). The destruction of theSecond Temple facilitated the eventual diaspora of theJews from the land of Israel throughout the Romanempire. The diaspora is what eventually led to the Jewish com-munity in the United States. This summer take anopportunity, if possible, to visit a Jewish heritage spot, and consider the correlation between your participationin July 4th, and the diaspora. Discuss with your familyand friends, those who came to this country as immi-grants and their efforts to integrate into the social fabricof this great nation. Some of us are first generationimmigrants, many are second generation, (but none ofus are native Americans.) Those immigrants came tothis country, a foreign land, and continued to adhere toa Jewish way of life. They came here because of thelure of democracy, liberty, and economic freedom topursue happiness. The Jewish immigrant’s life was not merely a test oftheir strength to survive as Jews but also to extend theboundaries of opportunities for their children. Theytested the ideas of democracy in a way that went farbeyond that which anyone had contemplated. Theirlives in the United States were a definitive assaying ofthe values on which the American society had beenbuilt. There was the constant conflict between a reli-gious way of life and the fear of assimilation. This strug-gle continues. The devotion which stirs in our hearts, not only ourallegiance to this country, but also our passion to Torahand Jewish education, is not inconsistent. It is possible,in this nation, to live a Jewish life while adhering to theprincipals of democracy, liberty and the pursuit of hap-piness.As we enjoy our summer and participate in our sum-mer activities and take part in the July 4th celebrations,do not forget the diaspora and our heritage. The livesof the Jewish immigrants will forever be rememberedbecause we, as members of Beth El, are living proofthat their struggles to become part of the American cul-ture and society, did not result in total assimilation.I wish you and your family a safe and cool summer, andlook forward to your renewed connection with yourBeth El community. -Barbara Becker

EDUCATION NewsA Jewish education is one of the great-est gifts you can give to your child. Agood Jewish education will add a deepmeaning to your student’s life. Beth Elis committed to providing excellentand positive Jewish opportunities, along with the partnership and sup-port of parents and families. Duringthe school year, we offer several inter-active educational family programsthat include the "whole" family. Three
importants aspects to our Talmud Torah are Torah, prayer and mitzvot.
Hebrew is a part of our program beginnning in the (Pre-K and Kindergarten) classes. Learning Hebrew pre-pares our students to fully participate in Jewish life byconnecting with the prayer book and enhancing theirJewish identity in the process. If you had the privilege ofattending the Talmud Torah led Shabbat on May 12,you would have been quite impressed with the skillslearned this year as the students led the congregation insong and prayer. Special thanks to my teaching staff, thestudents, and Cantor Angress for leading us in thisbeautiful and fun-filled service. And to the parents thatattended, I would like to personally thank you for yoursupport. Parent involvement in the child's education, even in Hebrew school, is crucial. When parents getinvolved in their children's education, children aremore likely to do better in school, be better behaved, have more positive attitudes toward school, and growup to be more successful in their endeavors.
At the beginning of the school year we will hold aTalmud Torah Open House and Orientation Day.This will be an opportuity for you to meet our staff andother personnel at Beth El. You will be receiving a sum-mer mailing with the exact time and date of this eventas well as other important paperwork pertaining to ourTalmud Torah. I encourage you to read through thisinformation carefully. Mark your calendars with impor-tant school year events such as parent group meetings, field trips, school programs for the family, holidayobservances and more. These meetings give you a goodchance to talk to other parents and work together tobring the best possible programs to our school.
In the meantime, I encourage you to have your childcontinue practicing their Hebrew over the summermonths. If your travels take you by car, bring alongHebrew learning materials. Long plane rides often dragon and on, another good time to brush up on onesHebrew skills. I have plenty of supplemental books, workbooks, and worksheets that I am happy to sharewith you over these long, hot summer months. Feel freeto call me, email me, or stop in. I’m happy to help.
Until next time.....

PRESCHOOL NewsThe end of the school year is always bit-tersweet. We say goodbye to our Pre-Kgraduates - most have been with us sincethe infant room! We enjoyed watchingthem grow and learn. We will miss themall, and we hope to see them in ourTalmud Torah Hebrew school.
Over the past year our school has experi-enced so many wonderful things. We hadsiblings born and start in our infant room,
infants learn to walk and moved up to the Ones room, the Onesand Toddlers are communicating with words, the Twos andThrees are potty training or trained, and our Pre-K children arebig helpers to the teachers and all their younger friends.
During the summer we will be turning our classrooms into ani-mal homes for the summer camp theme, “Animal Action.” Thecampers will learn about different animals, where they live, whatthey eat, and what they do all day long. I am pleased toannounce that Shelly Daley will be helping me during the sum-mer with summer camp. Shelly ran our camp in 2014 and 2015and all the children and staff loved her. She will be here threedays a week for five of the eight weeks of camp. Together, wehave planned to bring in very special visitors, have water activi-ties, learn about animals and much more.
Even though school has just ended, we have already startedplanning for the next year. The new PTO chair is LindseyDoucett and she is already hard at work. The big fundraiser fornext year will be on January 28, 2018. Save the date as it isassured to be as fun (if not more fun) than this year’s AlumniHoedown. The timing is perfect this upcoming year because itis after the football playoffs and before the Superbowl. We areinviting all the alumni and synagogue members to come havefun and support our school.
I want to wish everyone a fun summer and at the same timeremind you that there are a lot of heat related illnesses that caneasily sneak up on you (especially young children). Phoenix hasbeen having some crazy weather, but I am sure it is going to getvery hot and stay hot soon. Please remember to stay hydratedand give your children a lot of extra fluids. Heat exhaustionstarts slowly but can quickly escalate. If you are like me, you stayinside as much as you can. If you have to be outside, drinkinga lot of water is the only way to help prevent heat related ill-nesses.
Enjoy your summer and stay safe,
Joanie
P.S. The best advertisement is word of mouth. Please tell yourfriends about your great experience at our Preschool, and if theyenroll (and stay and stay for at least three months) you willreceive a $100 credit off of your tuition, or a $100 Visa gift card.

Feeling a little green?
Beth El would very much like to know when con-gregants are ill or in the hospital. Please call AliciaMoskowitz at 602.944.3359 x113 so that we can putyou on our Mi-Sheberach list and/or schedule a visit.Because of HIPAA privacy regulations, the hospitalsno longer call to tell us when a member is ill. Pleasekeep us informed. This includes supplying contactinformation for members who may not be ill, butwho are otherwise restricted in their daily activities. We don’t want anyone to be forgotten. Do notassume that anyone at Beth El knows, unless you oranother family member makes the call to the officeto let us know.
THANK YOU ALLFOR YOUR

Everyday items, which we take for granted, aredonated to ICM (formerly Interfaith CooperativeMinistries) who in turn supply the Arizona poor. I would love your Sunday and/or Wednesday news-paper, magazine or internet coupons - but only thoseyou do not use! I, in turn, will go shopping for thebest deals and put those coupons to work. Couponsthat I do not use are given to the armed forces.Drop off your coupons at Beth El...please keepthem intact. No need for cutting!Any Bar or Bat Mitzvah students who would like tohelp with this mitzvah are welcome. I pay for allitems and donate them to ICM. Words of wisdom from Beth on extreme couponingDid you know that Bashas Grocery Stores still dou-bles their coupons? For instance, a $.50 coupon isworth $1.00! Did you know that Wednesday's newspaper Safewaycoupons are a great deal? Those coupons can bepaired up with manufacturers coupons to take a"bite" out of your total grocery bill. Thanks again and Happy Shopping, Beth Shernoff - Mitzvah Coupon Lady
