RABBI’S MESSAGE

Bringing the Music to Life

After a long and meaningful Chagim season, we are ready to act and bring to

life all of the promises and aspirations we so desired during Rosh Hashanah,

Yom Kippur and Sukkot. The last Mitzvah in the Torah is to “Write for yourself

THIS Song”. Last year when we worked on finishing a Sefer Torah we

understood that we were fulfilling this Mitzvah. We personally wrote the song of the Torah. This

year how do we fulfill this Mitzvah? We were recently reminded of it during the reading of

Parshat Nitzavim right after Rosh Hashanah. We were inspired to try and fulfill its call. Now, as

we begin the reading of the Torah, how do we bring the song to life?

Each song has a story, with high points and low points, fast and slow, chorus, melody,

harmony; so many features to every song. The beginning of the Torah is the song of building,

the song of excitement, filled with individuals who set the stage for the beautiful songs of the

future. In Bereshit, we enjoy the Avot and Imahot, the difficult challenges and the

complicated relationships, and the comforting interaction of Hashem, helping us to

understand that this is a story worth fighting for, a song with a promise of eternity.

This year, we will take the song that we wrote, and we will learn from it. We will learn it in a

way that brings music into our lives and helps us appreciate how Yiddishkeit fills our lives with

meaning and joy. This year will be a year of song, it will be a year of music.

I am excited to begin a new project called the “Rabbi Shaya Kilimnick zt’l Legacy Project”.

The goal of the project is to bring to life many of the gifts that my father provided for our

world. This year we will focus on the music that my father composed during his years in

Yeshivat Ner Yisroel and throughout his Rabbanus. Our goal is to record an album of his

compositions for all to enjoy. My father’s music tells a story of an eternal love and bond that

he felt with Hashem, with every Jew and with Eretz Yisroel. His songs are a representation of

the Bereshit story. They are compositions which help us to connect to Avraham, Yitzchak,

Yaakov, Sarah, Rivka, Rachel and Leah. Most importantly, they will help us connect to my

father and his Neshama.

The Project will begin on Motzei Shabbos October 23rd @ 8pm with a Kumzits concert in the

main sanctuary.

Let’s continue to live the song.

B’Hatzlacha,

-Rabbi Avi

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

What a month we’ve had! I can’t remember a Holiday season ever being so condensed. Alt-

hough exhausting, I found it very meaningful and given the challenging circumstances, I’m

grateful we were able to provide opportunities for everyone to participate. Thank you to eve-

ryone who made it possible including those who lead our services, arranged for the tent,

picked up our lulovim and etrogim, set up chairs, hosted the sukkah walk, set up our sukkah,

assigned the seating, blew the shofar, babysat our children, and coordinated our Simchas To-

rah celebration. Special thank you to Rabbi Avi and Jonathon Sadik for doing so much behind

the scenes to make our holidays a success.

While we take a break from the holidays, our Board of Trustees will have an opportunity to

meet and discuss a number of objectives designed to move Beth Sholom forward. We will fo-

cus on how best to continue the positive trends we’ve seen over the past few months and ex-

plore ideas for fundraising, increasing our membership, educational opportunities, and shule

events that can bring us all together.

Speaking of events, we have many upcoming events to look forward to including at least two

barmitzvahs, a Kumzitz, Friday Night dinners, NCSY activities and a Hannukah celebration. Ad-

ditionally, we are currently ironing out the final details on a new strategy for providing fresh,

hot, delicious food at our Shabbos kiddishim. Please join us after services for good food and fel-

lowship.

As I mentioned in my Kol Nidre address, I encourage all of you to help strengthen our shule to

the best of your ability. Whether it’s attending minyan on a regular basis or volunteering your

ideas or time to one of our committees, please find an opportunity to get involved. If you want

to volunteer but you’re not sure how, please contact me directly and I’d be pleased to speak

with you about how best you can help.

As I will continue to remind you – STAY POSITIVE. Beth Sholom continues to move in the right di-

rection. Recent investments we’ve made to upgrade our building are the brand new tables

now being used in the social hall, a brand-new HVAC system that will ensure we enjoy con-

sistent heat and air conditioning for decades to come and an upgraded lighting project that

will replace our old fluorescent bulbs with modern LED bulbs, providing better quality lighting

and long term cost savings.

Enjoy the Autumn weather and as always, please feel free to reach out to me with your com-

ments, questions, or concerns ([email protected]).

Regards,

Beth Sholom Youth Opportunities

NCSY Learning Monday Night with Dinner

We look forward to a wonderful opportunity of Torah study and fun social gathering around food. This

program will be dedicated to the memory of Donny Morris- Nachman Danaiel zt’l Ben Aryeh Tzvi.

NCSY

We welcome our new Chapter Advisor Asher Gritz.

With the help of our regional advisors and our regional director Devorah Weinstock, we plan on having

a year filled with Torah learning, Shabbat visitations and events, which will give all our kids a sense of

Jewish identity and pride unmatched by any other program.

We wish our Shaar Tzion chapter, led by our President Sophia Sherin, all the Bracha and Hatzlacha that

they should excel in all their endeavors.

SMS- Sunday Morning Spectacular- 9:30am

An old Rochester youth program is being brought back to life. A program for children 2nd- 6th Grade.

We begin with all the taste cereals, learn about Brachot, new and old Jewish songs, and break out To-

rah study groups all in an hour time.

This Program will be dedicated to the memory of Donn Morris- Nachman Daniel zt’l Ben Aryeh Tzvi

Learning Opportunities

Daf Yomi-

45 minutes before davening throughout the week, our Shul provides a class which

completes a page of the Talmud every day. With the guidance of Rabbi Danny Gold-

stein, we have a wonderful group who join early in the day to jump into the vast sea of

the Talmud. This is a wonderful opportunity to jump start your day with Torah in your

“Kup”.

10 Minute Mishnah-

We will be entering our 8th year of 10 Minute Mishnah. After Mincha and Maariv, we

have maximized our time by studying the Mishnah for 10 minutes every evening. This year we will begin

the volume of Mishnah called Nashim. Nashim is the section of Mishnah which discusses Jewish Mar-

riage.

Shabbat Afternoon Gemara-

Before Mincha on every Shabbat we explore different Tractates in the Talmud. This year we will be

learning Tractate Sukkah- the detailed analysis of the laws of Sukkah and Lulav.

Daily Halacha- after Shacharit, on days when the Torah is not read, we learn laws of Prayer, Blessings,

and Holidays. Our primary source is the Shulchan Aruch- Code of Jewish law, and the Mishnah Berurah-

a commentary on the Shulchan Aruch. It’s a wonderful way to start your day.

A Life of Prayer-

Thursdays at 11:00am in person and on ZOOM. The goal of the class is to learn all areas of Jewish pray-

er. We will delve into the history and development of the siddur, the meaning of the Tefilot, and the

laws that are associated with Prayer. Class will be with Rabbi Avi.

Me, You and Rashi

Tuesdays at 9:30am in person and on ZOOM we will continue the journey of learning Chumash with

Rashi’s commentary. The goal of the class is to tap into the thought process of Rashi, to understand

how he analyzed a verse of the Torah and how he has served as a beacon of wisdom for generations

of Torah study. Class will be with Rabbi Avi.

Wednesday night Tehillim and Dvar Torah-

Tehillim will be said for a Refuah Shelayma of our Rebbetzin and for all Cholim. We conclude our

Tehillim with a Dvar Torah on the upcoming Parsha, thoughts from the notes of our dear Rabbi Shaya
