Ezra Klein is a columnist for Bloomberg News. He most recently left The WashingonPost where he oversaw Wonkblog to start a new media publication at Vox Media focused ongiving the public crucial contextual information necessary to understand what's happening in theworld today. “We treat the emphasis on the newness of information as an important virtue ratherthan a painful compromise. The news business, however, is just a subset of the informing-our-audience - and that's the business we aim to be in. Our mission is to create a site that’s as good atexplaining the world as it is at reporting on it,” Klein said about his new publication.
He is also a regular contributor and policy analyst for MSNBC where his commentary focuseson as Klein describes it “domestic and economic policy-making, as well as the political systemthat’s constantly screwing it up.”
Prior to joining The Washington Post and Bloomberg, Klein was an associate editor atThe American Prospect and a columnist at Newsweek. In addition to appearing and hostingon MSNBC, he has also appeared on Charlie Rose, Real Time with Bill Maher, TheMcLaughlin Group, The Colbert Report and many more. The Economist named him oneof the “Minds of the Moment.”
In 2010, Klein was named Blogger of the Year by both The Week Magazine and the SidneyHillman Foundation for his extensive coverage of the healthcare debate and Congress' passage ofthe Affordable Care Act.
In 2011, TIME Magazine named his blog one of the 25 best financial blogs and the Societyof American Business Editors and Writers named Klein as their2011 Opinion Columnist of the Year. In 2012, GQ named him totheir 50 Most Powerful People in Washington list saying “as pro-prietor of The Post’s Wonkblog, Klein has become a singularjournalistic force” and Esquire named him to their 79 ThingsWe Can All Agree On list saying “Ezra Klein gives economicscolumnists a good name.”
He likes graphs, appendix tables and he lives in Washington.

From the Rabbi's DeskRabbi Carl Wolkin
The following column is based on the sermon I delivered on the first night of Rosh Hashana this year.
Schwartz, a wealthy Jew, got sick in Boston. He was rushed to the besthospital, Mass General, where he received VIP treatment. But, after oneweek, he requested to be transferred to Beth Israel, a much smaller and lessprestigious hospital.
At Beth Israel, the doctors finally gathered the courage to ask what wentwrong at Mass General. When Schwartz replied that nothing was wrong, that everything was fantastic, the bewildered doctors demanded, "Then whydid you transfer to Beth Israel?"
"Because," answered Schwartz, "here I can complain."I have seen this story in several places used by different rabbis, and if it
sounds like a stereotype, forgive me. There is some history, however, tosuggest that there is a Jewish proclivity to KVETCH! KVETCH! KVETCH!- a word of Yiddish origin, now an English word as well. The kvetching ofJews began in ancient times even before we left Egypt when the Jewishpeople complained by blaming Moses and Aaron for Pharaoh increasingtheir burden after they complained to him (Exodus 5:21). The complainingcontinues throughout the Exodus, especially about food. “We remember thefish we ate in Egypt, free of charge, the cucumbers, melons, leeks, onionsand garlic. But now our life is parched, there is nothing, there is nothing toanticipate but the Manna (Numbers 11:5-6).
The Talmud must have remembered this tendency to kvetch and tried tocounteract it when it said “Who is truly rich? A person who is content withhis lot in life” (Pirke Avot 4:1)
Whether one believes kvetching is an ingrained Jewish trait or not, is upfor grabs, but no one could argue against it being a universal humancharacteristic. Why else would Barbara Ann Kipfer have written a bookentitled, “14,000 Things to be Happy About?” Is it because people todaydo not accept the truth of another popular saying, “Happiness is not gettingwhat you want, it’s wanting what you get?”
There is no argument that many of us have what to complain about. Asyour rabbi, many of you have shared with me serious trials and tribulationsover the years. You have the right and reason to kvetch as much as youwant. Some of our older members who are in this category due to disabilitiesthat come with age don’t ever complain. Many elders I have buried over theyears were described with the same phrase, “He/she never complained.” Soif it is not a uniquely Jewish trait but a universal one, is it then generational, that people were once made of stronger stuff? I don’t know, but I wonder.
In any case, it feels like there is a lot of kvetching going around, morethan there should be considering what is going on in other places in theworld at any given moment. Imagine being an Israeli, a Gazan, a Syrian, anIraqi, an African, etc… We have so much, when many not even that faraway have so little. My advice for the New Year is to kvetch less and bemore thankful.
I conclude with a prayer or you might call it a poem. Perhaps it is both.No matter. I read it whenever I find myself kvetching instead of thanking.I wrote it just a few weeks after my prostate surgery (I am thankful alwaysthat I remain cancer-free) and just before Rosh Hashana 2008.
It is pouring. I open my garage.I have a garage. I even have a car.So many people have neither.I am blessed.I step out of the car, open the door- first kissing the mezuzah.I have a God who loves me.I am blessed.I enter the house- a beautiful home made even more beautiful by a wife
who has loved me for 42 years.I am blessed.
Not everyone is so fortunate to have someone at his side.We are blessed.I think of Josh and David, our incredibly sensitive and caring sons. There is only one love among us.I am thankful. There are people in this world who have no love in their lives; they live
in a house or a country where love is prohibited.I sit at the table and look out at the rain and eat my lunch.I am safe and dry.I can make it warmer when I am cold and cooler when I am warm. Not everyone has this facility. Some people don’t even have a roof over their heads, or if they did, a
stormy demon name Katrina, Ike or Gustav robbed them of theirroofs and their safety.
And yet today I am feeling sorry for myself. The future is uncertain. I need patience. I am not yet whole. But I forget that I am alive, that the cancer has been removed from my
body.God, please remind me how fortunate and blessed I am today, on this
eve of Rosh Hashana, for my wife and children, the multitude offamilies who are part of our lives, the roof over my head, the clotheson my back, the food in my stomach.
God, please remind me that I have so much when so many have so little. When I complain, remind me, when I am impatient, remind me, when I
feel sorry for myself, remind me how blessed and fortunate I am.Remind me, most of all that You and I are partners in life.I can’t do it without You, and You can’t do it without me.Remind me that what we must do, that what we need each other for, is
Tikkun Olam, repairing the world, so that tomorrow we can bothsay, “because of us, someone will eat today”, so that one moreperson can say, “I am blessed and I am fortunate, so that next yearat this time, the “I’s” will grow in to “we’s”, into multitudes whohave roofs over their heads, food in their stomachs, health in theirbodies, someone who loves them.
God, help me remember the Midrash that you taught me, that you putthe world into our hands, made it our responsibility, and that if wedestroy it, there will be no one left to repair it.
The rain has stopped. The sun is shining once more.
AMEN

This month of Thanksgiving is certainly that. Firstly, I have the great joy of taking partin three weddings this month as well as emceeing the Masorti Event in New York City andhonoring two friends of mine, Rabbi Gerry Skolnik and Cantor Randy Herman. Towards theend of the month my mother Irene is to celebrate her 90th birthday for which we hope ourfamily will converge onto Pittsburgh to revel in the moment. (Yes, I will be in trouble on onehand but shout outs to one’s mom is always worth the revealing of one’s age).
In the middle of the month my wife Susan is to travel on a women’s mission to Israel withJUF. Susan and I met in Israel 30 years ago and as circumstances have mandated we havenot traveled back as often as we might have imagined we would. This time will be special.
In September Susan and I adopted an Israeli kindergarten called Gan Or, Kindergarten ofLight (see picture below). A longtime friend of mine established and administrates anorganization called MBKI, My Brothers’’ Keeper Incorporated. MBKI works to alleviatehunger and provide, shelter and educational needs for the poor amongst Israel. He has donesome fine work with the Ethiopian Olim establishing afternoon school activities, hot lunchprograms, winter coat drives and school supplies. He is now engaged in helping fringecommunities, some of them in areas defined as “settlements”, to help those in need. Thekindergarten that Susan and I have chosen to help is in Ma’ale Adumim, which is about 4miles or so outside of Jerusalem. The city is located along Highway 1, which connects it toJerusalem and the Tel Aviv area. Notwithstanding political leanings, we are thrilled to helpchildren in need (see picture below).
The most poignant detail about this kindergarten is that it is specified as a class for specialneeds children. Many of you know the pride I carry that Beth Shalom has taken onto itsshoulders the HUGS program. (Please see our website if you are unaware of HUGS and itsgood works). This year we have already successfully welcomed our HUGS community intoa uniquely designed Rosh Hashanah service, Sukkot program and into our CBSSimchaTorahTONE.
I know our Thanksgiving this year will be filled with gratitude for so many things and forGod’s blessings which have allowed us to do this mitzvah. When Susan visits Israel she willbe able to personally meet the students and faculty and create and even more intimateconnection with this group of families. I am sure you have ample reasons to be thankful aswell. Let us all be blessed with the awareness for all the good we have and offer words ofthanks to God, Hodu Ladonai Ki Tov – Let us give thanks to God for His goodness. (FunFact: Hodu is the Hebrew word for thanks and Tarnigol-Hodu is Chicken of Thanks, in otherwords, Turkey).

Now our year is off and running. We’ve had our Sukkotcelebrations, school is in session and adult education is in full swing. This year, try to do one more thing at CBS than you did last year. Iam sure you will find it rewarding. We have a few new eventscoming your way, so explore this bulletin or go to our website tofind out what is happening at www.bethshalomnb.org. Wow, WOW, wow and thank you. The monthof October was pretty incredible celebrating withso many wonderful CBS congregants, family, guests and friends. I finished my first 90 days asyour new Executive Director and I can’t say forsure how many people I met, but it has been wellover 2000+. A few thousand congregantswelcoming me to the synagogue, giving mehandshakes, hugs and in many different ways justsaying hello and welcome. A bit overwhelming tosay the least.
I was also very lucky to be at the main sanctuary for Rosh Hashanah andWood Oaks for Yom Kippur. I was able to experience our wonderful andextremely hardworking clergy; honored to work with so many dedicatedvolunteer ushers; watched our amazing financial committee help so manycongregants in need; watched our CBS maintenance staff bend overbackwards to get things prepared and ready; was completely amazed at theCBS administrative staff manage 100’s of requests each day; proud to bepart of a senior staff so dedicated to making everything right for all of you;learned many things about both sites; and I have to tell you each place wasvery special.
Sukkot was also very welcoming, especially watching the Men’s Clubbuild two sukkahs and sharing many meals in the Sukkah with so many newfriends. Sukkot Night Fever kept a smile on my face the entire evening, incredible job done by Leann, Deanne and all of the volunteers.
Simcha Torah is always a special holiday day for me personally, there isjust something about rolling out the entire Torah that just feels so special.
Also can’t forget about the Youth Department scooping out so many scoopsof ice cream.
Looking forward to being part of the festivitiesin 2015.

NEWS FROM THE KETER MINYANBy Harold Schwartz
When I initially began attending the morning Minyan it was
after the death of my mother over 20 years ago. I accepted the
obligation of saying Kaddish for the entire 11 month period and the
Minyan at Beth Shalom started at a 6:45am, so I could get to my
office on time. I soon realized that this group of regulars was
something very special as they welcomed me into the family and
made me feel as if I had always been there. Nate Batt was the
defacto leader who called pages, assigned honors and made
breakfast. Bob Wershkoff read the Torah and led services. Then
there was Joe Schwartz and Joe Fields who loved to tell stories
every morning at breakfast. Norm Glazer, a quiet but dedicated
Minyan goer was always there with a smile.
Then there was Mortz, an Israeli who was one of the best Torah
readers that I ever had the pleasure to hear. He did the bulk of the
reading until, of course, he discovered that I could read and was
more than happy to pass the baton. But we will never forget Fred
Byk who would read Torah every Rosh Chodesh and lead services
every Thursday. My memories of Fred encompass laughter at his
jokes and tears at his Holocaust stories. We always knew where
Fred stood on any issue but especially his love of Judaism and
Israel. When he stopped attending Minyan a few years ago because
of his failing health, I was saddened and realized that I was the last
man standing from the original group those many years ago.
I am sure I have forgotten someone, but these are the people
who made the greatest impression on our Minyan that was in danger
of not continuing, until the members of Northwest Suburban Jewish
Congregation came to the rescue several years ago. To them I pay
the highest tribute for they saved what is and should always be the
cornerstone of any Synagogue, the morning Minyan; in our case,
The Keter Minyan. It is the regular attendees of our Keter Minyan
that this tribute is made.
I found an article on the importance of the morning minyan in
a Chabad publication (Chabad.org) and it reads as follows:
"Fortunate is the man who listens to Me to watch by My doors day
by day, to watch the doorposts of My entrances. For he who has
found Me has found life, and he has obtained favor from G‑d." The
phrase "doorposts of my entrance" refers to the entrance to a
synagogue. When ten men pray together, constituting a minyan, the
Divine Presence rests on them, as the Mishnah states, "When ten are
sitting… the Divine Presence rests amongst them." For this reason,
the prayer of a minyan is considered more effective than private
prayer, because no interceding angels are needed to raise the prayer
to G‑d. Rather, the prayers are accepted immediately.
In addition, when praying with a minyan, one is able to say
and/or hear many prayers that are only recited with a minyan (i.e.,
Kaddish, the repetition of the Amidah [which includes Kedushah],
the Torah reading.”
KERUV CORNERKERUV: Welcoming Interfaith Families
BOB SPECTOR
Shalom Chaverim,I hope this holiday season is bringing all of you
good health, peace of mind, and happiness. Overthe last couple of months I have had severalconversations with friends and family memberswho were anticipating the Holidays with varyingdegrees of stress or worry. The common themeamong these discussions was that an adult family
member was involved with someone who was not Jewish andstruggling with the implications of inviting the non-Jewishsignificant other to a family meal or services. The following DearDr. Bob column is a composite of those questions.
Dear Dr. Bob,My 25 year old son, Steven, has been dating a woman he met at
work for almost six months. We have met her twice and she seemsvery nice, but she is not Jewish. From Rosh Hashanah to SimchatTorah we have planned several extended family gatherings andholiday meals. Steven wanted to invite her to our break the fast.He also mentioned that she would welcome the opportunity to attendYom Kippur services with us since it falls on a Saturday (she offeredto pay for the guest ticket). My father was a holocaust survivor andhad very strong opinions about marrying outside the faith. Iunderstand that Steven is an adult and he will make his own lifechoices, but by inviting his girlfriend to participate in and celebrateour holidays with us feels like a betrayal to my father’s memory andthat I am legitimizing a choice that I am not comfortable with. Please advise.
Dear Conflicted Parent,First, I want to assure you that you are not alone in this family
circumstance. Close to 40% of all Jewish young adults (age 25-40)are married to or are in committed relationships with non-Jews.Given your family history, your anguish is understandable. One ofthe most difficult transitions in parenthood is the realization that wehave very limited if any control over the choices our adult childrenmake. I suggest you dialogue with Steven about your feelings. Trynot to lecture-he is an adult and lectures tend to be one-waycommunications, not two-way. It is not within the scope of ourauthority as parents to legitimize (or illegitimize) our children’schoices, nor can adult relationships be legitimate or illegitimate. With that said, within the context of constructive communication, parents have the right to express to their children the impact theirchoices have on us. It may be too soon for you to include Steven’sgirlfriend in sharing synagogue time, but I would suggest youconsider using a holiday meal as an opportunity to expose her toyour son’s culture. This is a reasonable compromise that hopefullySteven can appreciate. On the positive side, Steven’s girlfriend isclearly invested in his Jewishness and it appears that he has foundsomeone who not only respects that but also wants to embrace it.
Please note that the Keruv committee is sponsoring a program onSunday morning December 7th called A Conversation With OurClergy (see bulletin flyer). As always, please do not hesitate toshare your questions, thoughts and/or feelings with me. I can bereached at [email protected].

SKIP is a cooperative program in which families, congregations, and the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Chicagoeach contribute funds toward an Israel Experience program forparticipating students. The SKIP goal is for each student to travelto Israel as part of his/her Jewish education. Enrollment beginsduring a student’s 3rd, 4th, 5th, or 6th grade and continues through9th grade. Both public school and day school students are eligible. The combined annual contribution for our children at Beth Shalomis $255 ($70 from each family, matched by $100 from ourcongregation and $85 from Federation). Although the SKIPprogram may not cover the entire cost of a trip to Israel, the fundsmake a considerable reduction in the expense. Remember that thefunds are in an interest-bearing account. Furthermore, families infinancial need can apply for scholarships from other sources. Weare indebted to Delores and Eugene Zemsky for their generoussupport of the SKIP program. They have made it possible forparents or grandparents to enroll their children at a very reasonableannual contribution.
Enrollment is arranged through our synagogue. After the initialenrollment form is completed, we are responsible for the rest –submitting the partnership agreements, transferring the funds andreporting our children’s names to the Federation. Enrollmentinformation will arrive in November, with a deadline of December1st for the submission of forms and checks.
There are many wonderful Israel Experience programs out there– everything from internship programs in various fields to volunteerprograms to sports-based programs to study programs of almost anylength. Your child’s SKIP funds (as well as Gift of Israel funds)can provide the opportunity of a lifetime. Birthright Israel is awonderful program but not everyone is guaranteed a spot on aBirthright trip. Your child’s SKIP funds ensure that he or she willbe able to go to Israel at least once, if not more than once, even ifBirthright Israel is not an option.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I register my child? When you receive the enrollment information, you need to
complete the forms and send a $70 check, made payable toCongregation Beth Shalom, by December 1st. No specialinformation is needed.
What if I forget to sign up in 3rd grade? May I start my child at alater date?
Yes, you may begin participating when your child is in 3rd, 4th,5th, or 6th grade.
If I want to enroll my child who is currently in 4th grade, may Ipay past 9th grade and make up a missing year?
You may begin contributions in grades 3, 4, 5, or 6 but you mayonly contribute through 9th grade.
If my child would like to go to Israel before the completion of 9thgrade, may I use his/her funds one year earlier?
S.K.I.P. ‘s goal is for funds to be used for a high school orcollege Israel Experience program and is designed for sophomorehigh school students or older. My child is in 6th grade and I would like to begin a SKIPaccount. May I enroll him now and pay for the previous years (for3rd, 4th, or 5th grades)?
You certainly may enroll your child in 6th grade. However,catch-up payments are not accepted.
May we use the funds for a family trip to Israel? The partnership program is designed to promote travel with a
peer group. Although the synagogue and JUF support andencourage family trips, these funds are to be used when your childtravels with a group of friends on his or her own young adult trip toIsrael.
What if we move and we join another synagogue in theChicagoland area?
If the synagogue has a S.K.I.P. program, your child’s accountwill be transferred and the partnership continues. You may continueto invest a sum of money each year (determined by the synagogueyou join), JUF continues its matching funds (always $85), and thenew synagogue continues its matching funds. Each congregationdetermines the amount to be contributed. The new synagogue maynot match your entire portion.
After several years of contributions, my child no longer wants totravel to Israel. What happens?
You will receive a complete refund of the money you deposited, plus the interest on that money. Please note that monies contributedby Congregation Beth Shalom are returned to the synagogue.
Up to what age may SKIP funds be used? This is a relatively new rule. SKIP funds may now be used by a
student through the age of 26.
Enrollment information has been mailed to all Aleph and newstudent families. Additional forms may be picked up at our schooloffice. If you have other questions, please feel free to contact methrough the synagogue or religious school office.

Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizenscan change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever does. -Margaret Mead
I had a conversation recently that was about to end with thewords, “If Beth Shalom ceased to exist, then our congregants wouldjust go to become congregants at another synagogue, or just stopbeing synagogue members altogether.” And then we came to theopposite conclusion. Our Beth Shalom community represents aunique and remarkable force, both for doing mitzvot in the here andnow and as a focal point for shaping the Jewish future. This is afundamental axiom for our school.
• The High Holidays brought our families together in force. We setthe Rosh Hashanah family service for 200 participants. Werequired an additional 40 chairs to accommodate our community.Ritual Director Naomi Weiss and I had a lot of fun. We werealso humbled in the congregation’s moments of shared holiness.
• Just before Yom Kippur teacher Lenna Scott took our firstgraders to the Garoon Science Center in Lake Zurich. There theyutilized the sound wave installation to practice saying, “I’msorry”. The refracted light demonstration provided the contextfor a conversation about rainbows, the Noach story and God’spromise to never bring such desolation again.
• Parents and sixth graders built the school’s first sukkah. Part oftheir comprehensive holiday curriculum, this is hands-on-training for adult Jewish life. (Maybe preparation for Men’sClub?) Classes took turns sitting in Beth Shalom’s Sukkot. Theylearned about lulav and etrog, and the practice of invitingushpizin into our family’s sukkot. Who from our storied pastwould you invite to your sukkah?
• Fifth grade began its second annual campaign of “Guerilla TorahTheater”. Parent Patricia Dolins taught a dramatic reading ofparashat Beresheet, and then, with props, this crew “invaded”the other classes in session with a different kind of Torahlearning. Fun and memorable text engagement.
• Family Shabbat Services begin anew. We are building a cadre ofyoung Torah readers to help lead. Music, rhythm instruments, parent participation and a guaranteed Torah honor if you want it.You should come.
Stay tuned for next month’s bulletin article and find out about ourShabbat dinner for Aleph and Bet families, the fifth and sixth graderetreat with Beth Judea congregation, Chai Mitzvah, which is a BethShalom Shabbat morning adult education program with RabbiWolkin and me, and more.

It’s hard to believe November is already upon us! The HighHolidays have passed us, and we are ready to move forward with therest of the school year. This past month we had our first 8th gradeonly event at Pinstripes, and the CBS USY enjoyed a Sukkah dinnerwith Clergy, along with a Monkey show in the Youth Lounge tocelebrate the Parsha Noah. The 2-6th graders enjoyed a Columbusyouth day off program, along with our second Youth Lounge openhouse after Hebrew School.
I wanted to talk for a moment about High Holidays at BethShalom. I was lucky enough to experience both Wood Oaks and themain service throughout the holidays. To work for an organizationand see all the pieces come together is really special. All the meetingswith congregants and volunteers come together to make for abeautiful High Holiday experience. Growing up, I loved seeing mydad on the bimah in the choir with the cantor. While I no longer liveat home, the Beth Shalom community has become an extended partof my family. I am lucky to work with everyone here at Beth Shalomand the High Holidays bring out the best of this synagogue.
I look forward to the year to come, and hope our families arefinding enjoyment from the Youth Department. If anyone has anysuggestions of programming please be in touch. I am here to makeyour experiences meaningful and fun, and any program I can makehappen for you I will!

After more than 3,000 rockets and missiles targeted Israel this summer, and after dozens ofsurreptitious terror tunnels were uncovered and destroyed, the time has come for us to learn aboutthe Hamas Charter. This session will examine the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement, and consider themotivations that drive the BDS crowd. Considering the scope and reach of Israeli innovation in fieldsas diverse as technology, agriculture and medicine, what would it mean for the world if a full boycottgained momentum? What can we do to combat the effort?

The separationbarrier, military rule autonomy and peace talks all will help complete the picture.
SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 8, 2015 | 10:00 am30 Parties and Nobody to Vote For: Understanding Israel’s Electoral System

SUNDAY, MARCH 15, 2015 | 10:00 am Nakba or Independence Day? Exploring Multiple Narratives

WE ARE COLLECTING CANDY FOR
Have any leftover candy from the end of October?
Congregation Beth Shalom is collecting candy once again to send to Operation Gratitude in California. Last year we sent over 200 pounds of candy which Operation Gratitude sent to deployed US service members.
Collection bins will be in the front lobby and in the Religious School lobby.
Give a sweet tooth to our troops serving overseas and let them know we care!
Any questions, please contact Jill Olefsky at 847-272-1758 or [email protected]

Men's Club PresidentLarry Grossman & Ray Rokni
Old Traditions, New Traditions, Traditions RefreshedFor over 45 years your
Men’s Club has innovatedprograms and events, eachof which started as a newtradition and evolved intoan old tradition. It’s thenatural course of things inan organization focused onengaging an ever-changingcommunity of Jewish menby serving their changingcommunal needs.
We are very proud ofour longtime traditionssuch as Sunday morning
breakfasts, Kavod Award, Man of The Year, Lox Box, Men’s Club GolfOuting, Erev Thanksgiving and especially Men’s Club Shabbat. We alsoenthusiastically participate in regional and national FJMC events such asWorldwide Wrap and Yom Hashoah Yellow Candles. And we are excitedabout some of our more recent traditions such as Steaks in the Sukkah, BearsBash and the Men’s Club Youth Opportunity Fund at the Illinois HolocaustMuseum and Learning Center.
Please join us for these golden oldies:• Bears Bash on Sunday November 9th will feature the Bears and Packers
on Sunday Night Football, hamburgers, hotdogs, beer, soda, desserts!$20 Men’s Club member/$25 non- member. RESERVATIONSSTRONGLY ENCOURAGED
• Erev Thanksgiving with the Jesse White Tumblers on Wednesday,November 26! $10 per person $25 per family. Food and entertainmentthe old fashioned way! RESERVATIONS STRONGLYENCOURAGED
Our newest iteration of the old tradition of a combined Men’s Club-Sisterhood social events will be great and you’ll want to be able to say yourwere there:
• Men’s Club/Sisterhood Night Event: An Evening of Fun on Saturday,November 15 will feature various games of skill and luck, food, beverages, PRIZES and socializing. CBS members and their friends andrelatives are welcome to attend this new and exciting social gathering.Play various casino table games or just eat, drink and schmooze.RESERVATIONS STRONGLY ENCOURAGED
Last year we started several new traditions, including the MidwestRegion of the Federation of Jewish Men’s Clubs addition of a Youth of theYear Award to the Man of the Year event and launching the Men’s ClubYouth Opportunity Fund. Both were overwhelming successes as directresults of the hard work and dedication of the men who developed andexecuted them and the acceptance of them by our community. We are verypleased to announce that both will continue in 2015.
In 2015 we will also be re-inventing one of our oldest and most cherishedtraditions, Men’s Club Shabbat. For at least 42 years Men’s Club Shabbathas been both a celebration of our members and their creativity andcommitment on a Friday night in March. We have seen dwindlingparticipation and attendance simply due to the work and lifestyle changesamongst us and the increased emphasis of Saturday morning Shabbatservices in the Conservative movement as recognition of this trend. We haveproduced many wonderfully moving and spiritually enriching Friday nightsthat people simply were unable to participate in and enjoy for reasonsbeyond our control. So this year we will test a new tradition of a Saturdaymorning Men’s Club Shabbat. Please join us on March 21, 2015, for aunique Shabbat experience led by your Men’s Club. We will present ourcoveted Kavod Award as well as provide our own special blend of ritualand ruach as we lead the service. All members are welcomed to participateand we hope you’ll join us as we honor and extend our legacy of Men’sClub Shabbats.
Use our website to find dates, times, forms and the most currentinformation: http://bethshalomnb.org/mens-club-overview. Men’s Club hasexpanded its social media efforts to keep you informed and involved in ourmany activities: www.Facebook.com/cbs.mensclub and Twitter:@CBSMensClub. Connect with us!
There is something for everyone in Men’s Club! And if not, we’ll starta new tradition for you!

HELPING HANDS 2014
For many years, Congregation Beth Shalom Social Action Committee has asked our members to purchase Holiday gifts for those children in need. This year we are doing things a little different.
Instead of taking a wish list from the boards posted at the front off ice lobby and the Religious School lobby, we are holding a general toy dr ive for Jewish Child and Family Services AND the Boys and Gir ls Clubs of Chicago.
ALL TOYS MUST BE NEW AND IN ORG INAL PACKAG ING. DO NOT WRAP ANY PRESENT
There is no minimum money that you have to spend. Whatever you can give will br ighten a child’s holiday!
NO GIFT CARDS PLEASE
We have received wish lists from both agencies. Suggested items include:
Games: Scattergor ies, Clue, Guess Who, Taboo, Monopoly, Operation, Trouble, Apple to Apple Jr ., Bob It, Scrabble, Checkers/Chess, etc.
Books: Sound, I Spy, Board, etc.
Children’s scrap booking kits, Ceramic painting kits, Jewelry/bracelet making kits, P lay- Doh kits
Puzzles for young or older children
Legos – for Toddler or older children
Cars and trucks (Hot Wheels, Tonka, Matchbox, remote control, model kits)
Any toys themed with popular characters (i.e. Dora, SpongeBob, etc.)
Color ing books, sticker books, Journals/notebooks, fun pens
All donations should be at Beth Shalom by November 30. Collection boxes will be in the main off ice lobby and in the Religious School lobby.
Any questions, please contact Debbie Bell at [email protected] or 529847- -5676.

LL’Chaim! To Life and Health!
On Sunday, September 28, 2014, CBS hosted our annual Blood and Flu Vaccination
Drive. It was a very busy morning, and I am so proud of what we have given back to
our community.
Steve Elisco and his Blood Drive Committee consisting of –Laura Shoeneman, Neal
Golden, Heff Hoffen, Michelle Crane, Janet Rohde-Krain and Shari Coleman, kept the
process running smoothly and efficiently, and did an amazing job of registering and
prepping people for their donations. CBS ended up with 64 successful donations. I
would like to thank Steve and his committee, as well as all the blood donors for all
they continue to do for our community.
I would also like to thank the wonderful people at Walgreens for partnering with us in
providing our members with Flu, Shingles and Pneumonia Vaccinations. Arlene
Handler did a wonderful job of ushering members through the vaccination process
and encouraged all to do what they could to stay healthy during Flu season.
Walgreens pharmacists gave 90 Flu shots that morning!
Happy and Healthy New Year To Everyone!

RESCUING THE EVIDENCE
Three Minutes in Poland TRAVELING IN EUROPE IN AUGUST 1938, David Kurtz, a Jewish immigrant to the United States, captured three minutes of ordinary life in a small, predominantly Jewish town in Poland on 16 mm Kodachrome color film. Through the brutal twists of history, these few minutes of home-movie footage became the sole surviving moving images of this town.
Join Glenn Kurtz, the author of Three Minutes in Poland (Farrar, Straus and Giroux, November 2014), to hear about the extraordinary discoveries made when he donated his grandfather’s film to the Museum. Now part of the Museum’s permanent collection, it serves as a memorial to an entire community—an entire culture—that was annihilated in the Holocaust.
