Results of Six-Word Memoirs for Yom KippurBelow you will find all the Six-Word Memoirs that were submitted to me before this bulletin

deadline.Thank you all so much for your participation. The hour we spent discussing all of them

on Yom Kippur afternoon was most gratifying. It was fascinating to share our thoughts witheach other and inspiring to know how much time people spent thinking about theirJewishness. I sent them all to the creator of the phenomenon, Larry Smith (without yournames, of course).

At this time, the Book of Six-Word Memoirs is “sealed”, but hopefully I can come up withsomething as interesting for next Yom Kippur afternoon.

I always enjoy the chance to write my bulletin article and use this space to teach or challengeyou in some manner. Periodically it is good to use the bulletin space to inform the membershipof programs or resources available to you.

These are various pamphlets which we have produced in-house for your benefit. Please comeand ask any of the clergy for any of the following if you might find it helpful.

The Sacred Bridge – This large booklet is filled with information about the issues that weare confronted with during the period of death. What are the customs and laws whichabound within this cycle of life? What are the directions that one would find by talkingto the clergy? This publication is a good overall study guide to answering some of thequestions surrounding death in Jewish ritual, specifically as practiced at CBS.

Kaddish: A Tribute beyond the Sands of Time – This small trifold pamphlet is filled withtestimonies from CBS members who found comfort in the practice of coming to reciteKaddish for the year. It is one thing for me to preach the benefits of doing so but whenit is one of your own peers, who lived and experienced loss, and then healing throughKaddish, it speaks volumes.

NORMAL – This valuable resource is an acronym for No One Really Manages ALone. The booklet is filled with information of housing options for a family member who mayneed a new living residence and helps to spell out some vital information to help you, thecaregiver, make your decisions. The second section is an abridged form of our SacredBridge volume. The third and final section is some guidelines for legal and financialissues that often come up at this stage of life. This is important reading for people whowish to better prepare for the final stage and help their families to manage more easily.

Farewell and Shalom – This booklet helps one facing the daunting moment of sayinggoodbye. It includes prayers of confessional (Vidui) to be said with or for someone whois taking their final breaths of life. As well it offers words of tradition to offer just priorto leaving ones physical side for the last time. How you choose to say goodbye to one youlove is personal but if one is searching for something to say when words often fail, thisbook may offer such a blessing.

Turning the Key of Time – This pamphlet was created having been inspired by thewritings found with another such life cycle manual. How does one come into the homeof their parent(s) and close it up for the last time? What might be said or done to turn thisemotionally difficult moment into something more spiritual? Something mundane suchas cleaning out a pile of boxes, closets and drawers and turning into something moremeaningful. This booklet is a gem.

Yizkor prayers – Our High Holiday and Festival Yizkor book is available not only duringthe services but also for those who might find relief and support from reading its passages.Filled with modern poems and traditional prayers this is a good book to use when visitingthe grave of a loved one or other contemplative times.

I recently had the pleasure of representingour Synagogue at the 100th AnniversaryUnited Synagogue of Conservative JudaismConvention. What a showpiece theconvention was, displaying the newest andbrightest ideas of our movement. There werespeakers galore, discussion sessions well intothe night and enthusiasm about Judaism thatoozed out of every person’s pores. I had mychoice of a number of Shabbat services, fromtraditional to cutting edge. I sampled a couple

of them to get an idea of what else was going on in our movement. There were so many speakers there that were beyond belief.

Subjects on history of our religion all the way up to other’s ideas onwhere we are going. The future will let us know. Trying to absorb asmuch as I could, I returned to Northbrook with notes and examplesof the way the Conservative movement is changing and plenty ofnotes on how things are staying the same. Our mission will be toincorporate new ideas along with our tried and true philosophy tobetter serve you, our congregants. If you would like moreinformation on United Synagogue or the convention, go towww.uscj.org.

HIGH HOLIDAY THANK YOU

With the High Holidays 5744 behind us, I have many people tothank for their work. Over two thousand people attended at MainService and nearly nine hundred attended at Parallel Service. Thefact that all the services ran smoothly is due to the many hours ofplanning and coordinating from both our professional staff and ourlay leadership.

Next to thank is for children and family services at both locations-David Barany, Naomi Weiss, Matt Rissien, Suzy Hakimian, HowardSigal, Meryl Weis, Adrienne Varhula, Lawrence LeVine, MarlaIsrael and Howard Freidin. The Israel Committee presents:

CBS ISRAEL STORIESCapturing Beth Shalom’s connection with Israel one congregant at a time

When you start talking to Joel Schwartz about his initial experiencesin Israel you have to keep reminding yourself that his vivid memories arefrom several decades ago. Joel’s first trip to Israel was during the summerof his junior year of college when he joined an American Zionist Youthfoundation trip and spent six weeks on a kibbutz near the border of GazaCity interacting with Israeli kids who were part of the Nahal youth fightingpioneers who were guarding the border. That first trip was just the start ofa multi-year adventure of visits, exploration, education and war.

The following year Joel was back in Israel this time on a kibbutzbetween Tel Aviv and Haifa. A few months after arriving, the Yom KippurWar broke out. Not only did Joel stay, he moved to kibbutz Kfar Haruv inthe Golan Heights which needed help as most of its members weremobilized for the war effort.

After returning to the US and working for about six months, Joelreturned to Israel to spend six weeks at kibbutz Neve Ur on the Jordanianborder (it seems like Joel completed the full Israel border kibbutz tour!).But this trip would last much longer. Joel decided to enroll at TechnionUniversity to take classes at the original Technion building in Haifa (nowa museum). This started a two and half year adventure living in Haifa andgetting a Master’s degree in Urban and Regional Planning.

While Joel has been back in the US for more than 30 years, his strongfeelings for Israel have never left. Joel is the Chicago chapter president ofthe American Technion Society – an organization dedicated to supportingTechnion’s mission to improve the well-being of Israel and all humanitythrough leadership in science and technology.

Joel is also very active in the Jewish National Fund, and together withhis wife Sharon is active in the American Friends of Israel War DisabledFoundation which hosts Israeli war veterans each summer.

The next time you see Joel be sure to ask him about what it was likespending time on kibbutzim, being in Israel during the war or studying atTechnion. Be assured you can have that conversation in English orHebrew which Joel remains fluent in to this day.

It’s hard to believe November is already upon us! This year todate we have already seen improvements in the Youth Department. Our numbers to date are much higher from previous years, and wehave been trying to put an emphasis on integrating the youth intothe synagogue more. One of the ways we are doing this is with ourupcoming USY-led Shabbat service on November 9. We hope thatyou will be able to join us for what is sure to be a great service ledby our teens.

On the programming side of things, October was jam-packedwith really fun events in the youth department.

Our K-2nd graders had a great time at the wild animal show (seepictures below), which featured the following animals: BurmesePython, Coatimundi, Flemish Giant Rabbit, Tarantula, BeardedDragon, Ferret, Quaker Parrot, Sulcatta Tortoise andchihuahua/pomeranian dog. The kids had a great time playing withthe animals, and getting to see animals they had never seen before!

Our second Sunday Youth Lounge Open House was a hit aswell. Once a month, on Sunday mornings, we open up the youthlounge for the youth and their families to come hang out and playbefore and after Hebrew School. Our next open house will beNovember 17. We would love to have you all attend.

Lastly, October was a great month for our CBS USY chapter. We were finally able to begin our regular programming after theholidays, and our first lounge night (Sumo/Sushi kickoff) broughtin almost 50 USY’ers. Every Thursday night you will find ouryouth lounge filled with tons of high school students at our loungenights. For upcoming themes, please check the upcoming eventspage under the youth tab on the Beth Shalom website.

Upcoming events in November include a Kadima LimoScavenger Hunt, a Youth Day Off Event, Youth Lounge OpenHouse, USY Lounge Nights, CHUSYFest and many more. Lastly,I want to wish everyone at Congregation Beth Shalom an amazingThanksgiving/Channukah!

Dinner:

Thanksgiving + Hanukkah = Thanksgivukkah!

Thanksgiving is the fourth Thursday in November. This year Thanksgiving is on November 28th, which happens to be the first day of Hanukkah (the first "night" of Hanukkah is the night before). As it happens, November 28th is the latest Thanksgiving can be and the earliest Hanukkah can be.

It’s A Miracle … At Plymouth Rock? Help us attempt to break the

Guinness Book of World Records record for

“most dreidels spinning!”

Chicken, latkes, cranberry apple sauce, dessert

Communal candlelighting

In order to break the record, we will need as

many people as we can get to spin dreidels…we need over 750 spinning

for 10 seconds!

A great miracle happened there.

I wrote this while getting ready for theCBS Cuba Mission I went on in 2011. I thinkback to what an enlightening experience itwas for me. Thank you again to RabbiMelman and Harold and Susan Schwartz foran amazing Mission and one that I will neverforget.

Life isn't fair. After 4 years of therapy I amfinally able to say it's the "LUCK OF THEDRAW".

Not long ago I met a friend at the pool just by chance, she wastelling me her husband said if life was fair children would not beborn with severe handicaps and they would not go hungry. It mademe realize how lucky I am that my family does not go hungry andall my children and grandchildren are healthy.

I guess that is one of the reasons I went on the CBS Mission toCuba. I felt my time had come to give back, not only monetarily butphysically. I thank God I was willing and able and also that I got thechance.

I believe this ties into my message for the New Year, BE ALLYOU CAN BE. I hope I can. I hope we all can.

Chanukah, The Festival of LightsChanukah, The Festival of Lights, which is celebrated for eight

days beginning on the twenty-fifth of Kislev commemorates theheroic struggle of the Jewish people against pagan forces, a strugglewhich proved decisive in forming the character of the Jewishpeople. The Maccabean victors in 168-155 B.C.E. eventually ledto the religious freedom and national independence of the Jews fromthe Greeks who sought to impose their beliefs and snuff outJudaism. The recollection of Chanukah is an eternal encouragementfor the Jewish people to stand up for our faith against all odds.

The lighting of the candles on the eight days of Chanukah islinked with the miracle of the oil. The Maccabees discovered onlyone cruse of oil, usable for the Temple Menorah when they came tocleanse and rededicate the sanctuary after its defilement by paganworship for Greek gods. Miraculously, the one-day supply of oilburned for eight days. The following year, eight days weredesignated for giving thanks and praise to God.

Today we celebrate the festival with candles, the spinning of thedreidel (top) and potato latkes (pancakes). The candles are kindledas follows:

The first candle is placed in the menorah on the right hand side(to your right as you face it). This, in addition to the extra Shamashcandle, is lit on the first night of the holiday. On each evening, afterthe first, a new candle is added so that the menorah fills in from theright to the left.

The new candle is lit each evening first (after the Shamash) sothe lighting of the candles goes from left to right.

Candles should be placed in a prominent place in the house sothey can be seen by all, and, if possible, should be placed in awindow so they can be seen outside the house as well.

The purpose of the candle is to “publicize the miracle”.Therefore, we place them in a prominent position and do not usethem for light or for any other functional purpose.

On Friday afternoon, the Chanukah candles should be lit beforethe Shabbat candles. On Saturday night, candles should not be lituntil after it is completely dark. Candlelighting should follow therecitation of Havdalah.

The appropriate blessings are to be recited beginningWednesday evening, November 27. The last day of the holiday isDecember 5.

Chanukah Candle Blessings:

On the first night only:

Baruch atah Adonai, Eloheinu Melech ha’olam, she’heche’yanu v’kiy’manu v’higi’anu la’zman hazeh.

HappyThanksgivukkah!

For the first timesince 1861 the JewishFestival of Lights willcoincide with theAmerican festival ofgluttony, Thanksgiving,on November 28, 2013.

(Technically the first time ever because President Lincoln formallyestablished Thanksgiving as a national holiday in 1863.)

Men’s Club will help celebrate this unique phenomenon with thecongregation on Wednesday evening, November 27 at 6:00pm with“Happy Thanksgivukkah: It’s a Miracle!” Join us as we attemptto break the Guinness Book of World Records for dreidel spinning!

On Sunday Nov. 24th come for breakfast to hear our UnitedSynagogue of Conservative Judaism Scholar-in-Residence RabbiJoel Levy speak on “Property ownership in God’s world: “Does

Judaism Recognize the Right to Individual Property as

Sacrosanct?” Rabbi Levy is Yeshiva Director of the ConservativeYeshiva in Jerusalem. He has been the part-time rabbi of Kol NefeshMasorti Synagogue, Britain’s only fully egalitarian traditional shul, since 2001. He teaches Talmud and Practical Halacha.

Do not miss The State of Anti-Semitism in the United States

and Europe on Sunday, December 15, 2013 at 9:30 a.m. Comefor breakfast and discussion by the Midwest Director of the Anti-Defamation League, Lonnie Nasatir. Reservation form available onCBS website under Men’s Club.

Did you know: Thanksgivukkah occurs because the Gregoriancalendar puts the fourth Thursday of November on the absolute latestpossible date and the Jewish Lunar calendar put the 25th of Kislevoccur on its earliest possible date. The Jewish calendar’s 19-yearcycle, and Thanksgiving’s 7-year cycle in theory mean this happensevery 133 years. (7 X 19). However, the Jewish calendar drifts fromthe solar calendar 4 days per 1000 years. Hence, while Hanukkahcan be as early as 11/28, over the years the calendar will drift forwardso the earliest Hanukkah can be is 11/29. Therefore, 2013 is the onlytime Hanukkah will ever overlap with Thanksgiving until theGregorian year 79, 833!

(Source http://JonathanMizrahi.blogspot.com/2013/01/hanukkah-and-thanksgiving-once-in.html) In case you are not yet confused, note Jewish days start at sundown while the Gregorian days starts atsunrise. OY!

NEWS FROM THE KETER MINYANBy Harold Schwartz

The Keter Minyan is going strong and growing. We invite thosewho have not yet experienced its spirituality to attend and see whatwe are all about. This column will discuss the Prayer Book that weuse during our worship. Jews created fixed texts and structure thatwere drawn together to form the Siddur, or Jewish prayer book.Siddur, in Hebrew means order; the order of Jewish worship whichwas largely established during the first five centuries of theCommon Era. Components of the liturgy were drawn from earlierperiods and continue to develop until today. The actual structure ofthe worship services was developed during the Talmudic period. The morning service, the most complex of the three daily servicesis focused on two main prayers. the Shema and the Amidah. Wehave previously discussed the significance of both prayers.

Most of the material in the morning service fit into structuresthat emulate these two themes. They are either Biblical passagesurrounded by blessings like the Shema, or a series of blessings likethe Amidah. Other materials in different forms supplement thevarious services, but these two formats cover most of the structurein the Siddur. Although the basic format of the services wasdeveloped during the Talmudic period, the Siddur continues togrow as new material is added. The first Siddur was not writtenuntil the ninth century when Babylonian geonin (leaders)formulated the “canon” of the service. Differences remained andcontinued to develop in different communities, especially in theSephardic and Ashkenazic communities. Today, differentdenominations of Judaism have developed their own Siddurim.Modern Siddurim frequently contain translations, commentariesand texts for home rituals and observances.

BOB SPECTOR

Shalom Chaverim,To tree or not to tree… that is the question. I

now refer to this as the December challenge (I nolonger use the ‘D’ word (dilemma) because forsome it implies there is a more right or wrongway to decide). What is it about the Chanukahand Christmas holiday season that tends to bring

out more religious territoriality compared to other holidays? Wehad a tree our first year in our home before Chris chose to becomeJewish. This was a very spiritually challenging experience for me,but more about that later. The following question came to me byway of a close Jewish friend whose son is in a committedrelationship with a Catholic woman.

Dear Bob (I don’t make my friends call me Dr.):As you know, Nathan has been living with his girlfriend for

six months. She is not a practicing Catholic but she loves theChristmas season. She wants to have a Christmas tree in theirhome and Nathan has agreed. We know Nathan has a strongJewish identity, but we feel this is the beginning of losing him. Ifwe participate in celebrating Katie’s holiday we feel that we areencouraging his choice. We are hurt, angry and scared. We feel solost. What should we do?

My Dear Friend:I did personally struggle with this issue before Chris converted.

I wondered if I was I betraying myself, my family and Judaism byhonoring Chris’ tradition. The truth is the tree question forced meto do some soul searching. If anything the ‘tree’ question pushedme to find myself. You have a choice to make. You will only loseNathan if you push him away. You will not lose him because heis honoring the tradition of the woman he loves. Talk to Nathanabout your feelings after you ask and listen to how he is feeling. As Jews we are taught to honor the traditions of others. At timesthis is a very difficult task. Please understand you have a choice. The December challenge exists only if you make it one.

On behalf of the Keruv Interfaith Family Initiative, HappyChanukah to all our Jewish CBS family members, and MerryChristmas to all our non-Jewish CBS family members. OnNovember 23rd we are including a Keruv program as part ofour Shabbat morning service. We will be having a paneldiscussion with several of our intermarried members during andafter the service. This will give all of us an excellent opportunityto learn from and share with our members their experience at BethShalom.

I am very interested in your thoughts about the Decemberchallenge. Please share them with me at [email protected].

About Face: German-Jewish Allied Soldiers Who Foughtthe Nazis in World War IIFeaturing Dr. Julia Rath,

National Executive Director of Honest Reporting

About Face: German-Jewish Allied Soldiers Who Fought the Nazisin World War II was a documentary film created in 2000. It is directed bySteven M. Karras and produced by Dr. Julia W. Rath and Beach StreetEducational Films Foundation. The 20-minute version of the film wasoriginally intended as a trailer for the 90-minute film, completed in 2004, byRose Lizarraga, Steven Karras, and Buddy Pictures. Yet it stands on its ownas a brief history of the Allied troops of German-Jewish descent and detailstheir role in fighting Hitler and Nazism, 1942-1945.

The documentary presents a set of oral histories that detail theimpressions, drama, and personal experiences of these German- andAustrian-born Jewish émigrés who escaped the Final Solution and returnedin military uniform to Europe and North Africa, as soldiers for the UnitedStates, Britain, and Canada. Their knowledge of the German language andculture made them invaluable in both combat and intelligence roles, wherethey often served as interpreters and interrogators.

Beach Street Educational Films Foundation was originally set up as anot-for-profit film production company, incorporated within the State ofIllinois, in order to bring these life stories to public attention and explainhow these people were in a unique position to strike back against those whohad previously victimized them.

Today’s featured speaker Dr. Julia W. Rath is the producer of the 20-minute version and executive producer of the 90-minute version and iscurrently president of Beach Street Educational Films Foundation. Sheearned her Ph.D. in sociology from the University of Chicago and is anexpert on oral history, having taught interviewing and research skills at theFordham University Graduate Center, in Tarrytown, New York. Her fatherleft Germany in 1936 and served out World War II as asergeant/draughtsman with the British Army in Palestine; her uncle escapedGermany only to return to Europe with the U.S. Armed Forces to serve inthe infantry and interrogate prisoners of war.

Eclectic in her interests, Dr. Rath has just finished a book entitledConquering Your Own Sleep Apnea The All-Natural Way, which will beavailable for sale through Amazon.com, and the author’s own website,ConquerApnea.com.

A light dinner will be served so please RSVP no later than November 4,2013.

Other works by Ms. Jules that we have readat CBS include: Abraham’s Search for God; Benjamin and the SilverGoblet (a Sydney Taylor Honor Award winner); Once Upon aShabbos; and Sarah Laughs (a Sydney Taylor Honor Award winner).Detailed bibliographies of Ms. Jules’ works are available in ourlibrary. To prepare for Ms. Jules’ interactive presentations for eachgrade level, our students will be encouraged to read as many of herbooks as possible.

Ms. Jules explains that she became a writer because she “loves toplay with words”. During her visit to CBS she will do exactly that!!!Our students will be given an opportunity to create stories in advanceto share with Ms. Jules and their classes.

Please get involved with your children and share this excitingexperience.

Book order forms were sent home with students and areavailable online on the School and Library websites. Paid ordersare due by November 5th to ensure delivery by Chanukah, whichbegins on November 27th. Ms. Jules will autograph her books onJanuary 19th after her presentations with our students.

WHAT ARE WE THANKFUL FOR?Thanksgiving is most special time when we express our gratitude

to God . . . not only for a bountiful harvest. . . but for all that isprecious to each one of us.

At this time, we would like to include our deepest appreciation toeach of our dedicated volunteers who, as an incredible team, has madeyour library the outstanding resource that it is!!!

What an exciting month November is this year . . . Chanukah,Thanksgiving, and Jewish Book Month (October 26th –November 26th).

For the first time ever, Chanukah and Thanksgiving are celebratedat the same time!!!

When we consider the significance of Chanukah andThanksgiving, though, we note that they both are manifestations ofthe same values – the pursuit of religious freedom, giving thanks, andsharing time with family and friends.

To enjoy our extensive Chanukah collection, please “check usout” in person or visit us online at www.BethShalom.org (LifelongLearning. . . Library and Resource Center).
