It is only 73 miles from Treblinka to Bialystok,a city which prior to the Second World Warwas a commercial and cultural metropolis,

70% Jewish. Almost all of Bialystokʼs more than200,000 Jews were killed in the Nazi invasion in1942. Joanna Auron-Gorska, Ph. D., a nativeof Bialystok, who will speak at Beth El on May1, 2013, was not born until a generation and ahalf later. By that time the Russian occupationof Poland had erased all but the barest traces ofher ancestry on her fatherʼs side. She, neverthe-less, felt that her unknown ancestors wereJewish and she was determined to find out.

Today Dr. Auron-Gorska, a well- known artistin Poland has a Ph. D. in multi-cultural studies,an M.A. in Jewish/Christian relations, anotherM.A. in English philologyand a summa cum laudeBachelorʼs Degree inteaching. She is also aJew by Choice!

Known in Poland forher illustrated lectures onthe Holocaust and itsaftermath, Dr. Auron-Gorska, for years traveledfour hours by bus onFriday to attend Shabbatservices in Warsaw, andfour hours home onSaturday night. She willtell us how difficult it is tobe an observant Jew inPoland today, and why she founded BeitBialystok in what she calls “a city full of ghosts”so that she can bring being Jewish “out of itshiding space: so that the “Invisible Jews” ofBialystok, and half-Jews, and quarter-Jews canhave a place to study and learn and worship.This is her goal for herself, but also for her fiveyear old daughter, that she, unlike her mother,will not need to live a life of unknowing.

Dr. Auron-Gorska is a scholar who will showphotographic slides of old Jewish places in theBialystok that she has filled with new life byartistic renderings of contemporary painted inpeople…a monument to what once was, butalso a monument of hope for the future. Shewill also speak of her personal journey of beinglost and then of becoming who she somehowknew that she always was.

Many have heard of Jewish renewal inPoland, of the Jewish museum in Warsaw illus-trating what was once Jewish life there, andalso of festivals in Krakov. Few have heard

First one family moved, then a second and athird. Soon hundreds of Jewish familieshad relocated from their city row houses to

the ranch houses and split levels of the post-war suburban frontier, as Baltimore Jewsjoined in the national rush to suburbia whichbegan after World War II.

By the late 1960's, some four out of fiveJews lived in a single section of the metroarea: greater northwest Baltimore, fromUpper Park Heights deep into the suburbsof Baltimore County. And that ratio holdstrue to this day.

Such a sudden and long-lasting change couldonly have happened as a result of powerful forces coming togetherat once.

You'd be surprised at how many Beth El members you will recognize! Beth El played a BIG partin this movement. Featured builders among others include Elliot Weinstein, Sam Gorn, and LeeRosenberg.

Participants will learn abouttheir history, techniques and motifs, and how these items fulfill themitzvah known as “Hiddur Mitzvah,” the beautification of a mitzvah.There will be 2 sessions on that day, 1:00 p.m. - 2 p.m., and 7:00p.m. – 8:00 p.m.

Middle school guides - a class act …The municipality of Jerusalem is training aselect group of students from the 5th to7th grades as future city guides. Thetraining, titled “My Neighborhood”, is edu-cating the young students in ancient andmore recent history. As guides, theywould be equipped to share this knowl-edge with future tourists hungry for thecapital cityʼs true local flavors.

Israel Defense Forces begins POWtraining …The experiences of Gilad Shalit, the Israelisoldier who was freed after five years inPalestinian captivity, have resulted in the

IDF designing a course on dealing with captivity. All special servicessoldiers and combat pilots are expected to take the course. Mr.Shalitʼs abduction also resulted in military protocols designed to pre-vent soldiers from being snatched by enemy combatants.

A solution to frequent car washing …Professor Edward Bormashenko, an Israeli researcher, has created alow-cost hydrophobic material to keep surfaces clean. The new nan-otechnology breakthrough means not having to use water andcleansing agents to keep surfaces free of dirt, dust and oils. Thewater-repellant material is said to render surfaces virtually cleaning-free for long periods of time.

The Baltimore Zionist District (BZD) will present Beth El mem-bers, Debra Silberman Weinberg and Joe Weinberg with theprestigious Humanitarian Award at the 68th Brandeis Gala,

Experience Israel, on Tuesday evening, May 7 at the Pikesville Armory.Debra explains, “My first visit to Israel on a BZD teen trip had a

permanent impact, deepening my sense of responsibility for ourcousins choosing to live in the ʻlandʼ and strengthening my connectionto Jewish peoplehood. Joe and I are pleased to honor the memory ofmy father, Gene Silberman, and our familyʼs ongoing commitment tothe State of Israel.”

What do you get when you partner an American Jewish interna-tional business developer with the State of Israel and theASSOCIATED? “Business innovation that helps mankind.”

This Israeli model of business intended to improve the welfare and/orsecurity of mankind exemplifies the many remarkable achievements ofthe MIDC, the Maryland/Israel Development Center.

On February 9, Barry Bogage, the MIDC Executive Director, shedlight on the special partnership between Maryland and Israeli companiesand research institutions. Unlike the alliances between other Americancities and Israeli companies, the MIDC is not state funded, thereby allow-ing more flexibility in developing and executing business strategies andinnovation. Maryland and Israel share strengths in medical sciences,information technology, and homeland security, making their partnershiptruly exemplary.

Picture a festive wedding in Beersheba. See the happy bride? Nowjuxtapose the celebratory music with video footage that follows thezigzag trajectory of iron dome missiles in the sky. Mr. Bogage explainedthat the domeʼs highly sensitive radar detects incoming missiles headedfor population centers. On YouTube, he witnessed the video of the neartragic event. Thanks to the brilliance of two Israeli companies that workedin Maryland on this amazing anti-missile defense system, the weddingproceeded undeterred.

During the holidays, Beth El raised $1,558,700 for the Israel Bond Drive.The congregation turned in 566 contribution cards to the organization.

Join us as we revisit thelife of early Baltimoregentry. Our group willbegin this nostalgic tripby visiting the Howard–RawlingsConservatory andBotanic Gardens locat-ed in Druid Hill Park.The Conservatory wasopened in 1888 and itsmulti-million dollar reno-vation was completed in2004. This gem is one

of the oldest surviving conservatories in the United States. Besidesseeing the beauty of the plants and flowers, this visit, will provideyou with a better appreciation and understanding of plants fromaround the world and their importance in our lives.

what it is really like to try to live a Jewish life in modern Poland. Dr. Auron-Gorska quotes statistics indicating there are between six and twelve thou-sand people who belong to Jewish organizations in Poland now, but addsthat the rabbis of Beit Warzawa claim that there are between fifty and sixtythousand living Poles with Jewish ancestry.

A riveting lecturer, Dr. Auron-Gorska, who speaks of this, onceanswered the question of why living as a Jew in Poland is difficult. Shesaid that it is difficult to live from a tradition you learn from a book, withouta community…that there are legal and halachic issues between the exist-ing few communities that have to be resolved, and there is a fear ofostracism: of social death.

Beth El member, Ellen Budish, is receiving the LayHonoree Award from the Jewish Educators Assembly thisspring. The Lay Honoree Award is given specifically to

those who devote a large amount of their time to education andtheir synagogue.

Ellen has been voluntarily serving Beth El and its surround-ing community since 1999. She has served and chaired theHebrew School Committee, organized school retreats, plannedmultiple mitzvah projects, and chaired numerous fundraisingevents. Ellen is also an officer at the synagogue and sits onmany of its committees. Her involvement and commitments areendless.

Dr. Eyal Bor, the Director of Education, nominated Ellen forthis distinguished award and rightfully so. He explained, “Ellenʼsdedication to the Beth El Schools and the synagogue as a wholemakes her the most natural candidate for this award. Ellen isalways the first to volunteer and she never says no when she isasked for help. Leaders like Ellen make my job so much easierand so rewarding.”

TORAH MAINTENANCE FUND

A project of the Beth El Seniors is to support the maintenance andrepair of our synagogueʼs Torahs and Megillot. A kosher, usableTorah must be written by hand with a pen and special ink by alearned scribe. Every letter must be perfectly formed and every wordmust be correctly spelled. The ink can not be chipped off even a littlebit. The parchment that the Torah is written on must be flawless. Theslightest tear or smudge will render the Torah unfit for use. The BethEl Torahs are regularly inspected and repaired. This is a costlyprocess. Beth El Seniors is pleased to provide financial support forthis entire process. It is a mitzvah to contribute to a process thatkeeps our sacred scrolls preserved for future generations. TorahMaintenance Fund cards may be purchased at the Beth El frontoffice or call Dorothy Fineblum at 410-653-2631. These all pur-pose cards are six for $10 or $2 each.

Beth El presents its Scholar in Residence Weekend beginningFriday, April 19th. Our Scholar in Residence will be RabbiLeonard Sharzer, M.D., who will discuss issues which affect

our daily lives but are reluctant to confront. As a physician and arabbi, Rabbi Sharzer is able to convey both medical and religiousperspectives relative to these topical issues.

Rabbi Leonard A. Sharzer is Senior Fellow in Bioethics of theFinkelstein Institute of Religious and Social Studies at the JewishTheological Seminary. His current research is the field of bioethics,especially as it pertains to Jewish law.

A native of Boston, Rabbi Sharzer graduated from the BostonUniversity School of Medicine and completed his residency training ingeneral surgery at the University of Iowa. In addition, he earned anMS in surgery for work in organ preservation for transplantation.Following a fellowship in hand surgery in Louisville, Kentucky, hereceived a Fulbright Scholarship to do clinical and laboratoryresearch in microsurgery in Melbourne, Australia. He completed hisresidency in plastic surgery at the Eastern Virginia Graduate Schoolof Medicine in Norfolk, Virginia. Dr. Sharzer then worked as aRegistrar at the West of Scotland Regional Plastic Surgery Unit inGlasgow, Scotland.

In 1978, Rabbi Sharzer joined the Faculty of the Albert EinsteinCollege of Medicine in New York City where he attained the rank ofClinical Professor. He retired from medicine in 1999 to enterRabbinical School at the Jewish Theological Seminary where he wasordained in May, 2003.

With this extensive background, Dr. Sharzer will provide membersand guests with the opportunity to explore troubling questions that wefrequently face.
