SIX PARISHES FRIENDSHIP CLUB
Well, it was that time of the year again – The Children’s Shoebox Appeal – and members entered the village hall laden with gifts which were quickly transferred to tables to be sorted into boys/girls or either, thank you to Beryl Tooth and Jenny Bradley who had between them covered over 25 shoe boxes with festive paper. Soon happy members were busy filling boxes with goodies ranging from soap and toothbrushes to all sorts of hats, games, writing materials and toys, with each box going to Anne and Jenny for checking to ensure that all items met with the required criteria. All too soon the tables were cleared, boxes added up, and much to our amazement, we found we had filled 42 shoeboxes. Our next problem was finding enough money to send the gifts onwards, at a cost of £3.00 per box we needed a total of £126.00. Already members and friends had donated £90.00 so the balance should, hopefully, be reached before our shoeboxes go on to the next stage.
For our meeting on Tuesday 8th November we are going to Mere Park Garden Centre, near Newport, leaving Beckbury at 1.30pm outside Beckbury Church. Contact: David and Beryl Tooth 01952750324

I’m only joking!
In a church school cafeteria, in front of a pile of apples was a
sign which read, ‘Only take one - God is watching’. Further
down the line was a pile of biscuits. Someone had written a
sign saying, ‘Take all you want - God is watching the apples.’

……………………………………………………………………………...........FROM the RECTORY
Dear Friends This year is the centennial anniversary of the Battle of the
Somme which began on 1st July and ended on 18th November 1916, when fighting stopped because surviving the winter became the priority for both sides. It was one of the costliest battles of World War I. The original Allied estimate of casualties on the Somme, stated at the time, was 485,000 British and French casualties and 630,000 German, but these figures are not entirely accurate. But on the first day alone the British Army lost nearly 60.000 men. Debate still continues today on the value or futility of the Somme. Some argue that it was a necessary step in the change from old style Victorian warfare to a more modern style of ''industrial warfare'' with aeroplanes, tanks and guns. Some see it as a turning point in weakening and exhausting German resources leading to the final victory in 1918. Another on-going debate is the place of religion in these conflicts. Anglican bishops and chaplains were with the troops, and people prayed in Sunday services and privately for their family members on the front line. But does this make the Great War a ''religious war'' as one writer has stated ? The causes of the war seem not to have been religious at all, but more to do with land and power and the European desire to build empires. No doubt this empire building included an element of taking Victorian culture and church to annexed lands, but inside Europe the tensions between competing nations were not about religion. While there are pacifists in the Church, many acknowledge the need to defend against aggression and injustice. It is hard not to support the WW2 allies in their fight against Nazism. In this country this year the Somme was remembered on 1
July at 7:28am with a two minute silence observed on all BBC Radio
stations to mark the start of the battle. Across Britain 1400 actors, dressed in replica World War I-period British Army uniforms, walked about in streets and public open areas, each taking on the identity of a British soldier who died on the first day of the Somme, and handing out information cards about that soldier.
We will be remembering in our Remembrance Sunday Services in church all those who died in the two Great Wars and more recent conflicts, as well as praying for soldiers and victims in present day conflicts.
