The next talk in the series will take place in the Hack- worth Room, Collection Building, on Thursday 20th July, starting at 1.45pm. The title of the talk is The Lowca Legacy and the speaker is Anthony Coulls, Senior Curator of Rail Trans- port & Technology. Throughout the 19th Century, many companies across the UK began to make steam locomotives. Some began from nothing; others were established firms seeking new income. A number grew into major concerns lasting over the century; others came and went. The Cumbrian town of Whitehaven seems an unlikely location for a steam locomotive works, but for nearly 70 years, an engineer- ing company there produced more than 200 locomotives. Fletcher and Jennings took over the business of Tulk and Ley in 1857. From then, until 1884, the company concentrated on four and six-coupled industrial tank locomotives, although other goods such as bridge girders, and blast-furnace shells for the burgeoning local iron industry, were also produced. This talk looks at the history of the Lowca Engineering Works and the firms that operated it, and finishes with information on where you can see the surviving engines from the site in op- eration or on display in the 21st Century. each receive £50.The group has also decided to purchase a defibrilla-tor on behalf of the town, including three years of maintenance costs. The potentially life-saving equipment will be housed in Shildon Methodist Hall due to its location at the centre of the town and its accessibility to the public, as it is open most days.Shildon Police will also benefit from the purchase of a ‘lock snapper and enforcer’, a device which they would previously have to borrow from the neighbouring police team in Bishop Auckland. In her final report, chair-person, Betty Carr said: “I personally would like to thank everyone for all the

help we have received over the years, too numerous to mention, so from the bottom of my heart a big thank you to you all. “And to my fellow board members and trustees, my heartfelt thanks for all their commitment to the group and for the hard work, without which we could not have achieved the success we have had over the years, and for making my role as chair an enjoyable task.”Mrs Carr did warn that “There is still fear of crime within our town and the need to be aware of our safety, so look to our police and, where help is needed, hopefully someone will be there. “I have every confidence in the community spirit that thrives in Shildon.”

County Durham teaching assistants have expressed dismay that the latest offer in their ongoing contract dispute with Durham County Council will see over a fifth of staff lose pay.A new offer was passed by 56 votes to 32 at a meeting of the full council on Wednesday 21st June which will see 427 teaching assistants lose out, includ-ing 268 who will lose 5% or more and 27 who will lose over 10%.In a statement ahead of the vote, CDTAA, the com-mittee representing the bulk of teaching assistants urged councillors to delay accepting the proposals until a solution could be found for the group of teaching assistants set to lose out, which is under-stood to be a particular block of TAs currently employed at a particular pay grade.

“The County Durham Teaching Assistant com-mittee wishes to express its disappointment and serious concerns over Durham Council’s new proposals,” said the state-ment. “This new proposal is being portrayed to the public as a pay increase for the majority of Teaching Assistants, whereas there is still almost a quarter of the workforce facing a pay loss.”After the vote, CDTAA spokeswoman Gillian Iveson said: “We’re disappointed the union is using a divide and conquer technique. We have to think about the 472 who are still losing money. That’s a huge number.”A motion by Lib Dem councillor Owen Temple to adjourn the vote was defeated by 55 votes to 32.TAs will now be balloted on the proposals by their unions.

Shildon Mayor, Cllr Shirley Quinn (centre) joins some of the young Variety Show performers on stage at Shildon Civic Hall.

Annual Youth Variety Show entertains Civic Hall audience

With over 200 people at-tending and 70 young people performing, the annual Youth Variety Show at Shildon Civic Hall was once again a successful event. A spokesperson told the Crier, “Over the two nights we raised over £600 for the SCYPAN Young People’s Awards Evening. We would like to sincerely thank the Mayor, Cllr. Shirley Quinn for attending the show,

along with thanks to the Spectrum Roller Skating Club, Tracey Stevens, Timothy Hackworth Divas and Claire Meadows, as well as the Tearaways and CATS Theatre Groups and all the young people who gave up their time to perform at the two events.“We would also like to thank the ‘behind the scenes’ volunteer helpers that manned the door and sound equipment, tombola

stall and generally looked after the young people’s well being. “Thank you to all the people who attended and supported the evenings. A very grateful thank you to you all. It never ceases to amaze us how much talent there is in the local area. In the show we had skaters, dancers, singers, musi-cians and comedy, filling a two and a half hour show. Wow!”

A group of Year 9 students at Greenfield Commu-nity College who have been working with the “TEAMH” project ran by If you care share have created a fan-tastic room for the school counsellor. This project started with the training of the young people involved to help them recognise and support those with mental health needs. Matthew, from ‘If You Care Share’ then set a task for the students to come up with a project that would benefit the whole school on a budget of £300 pounds. The students after some deliberation decided that the counselling room could be more comfortable for students who need it. The students had to design the room and then research

the costs of various items that they wanted to purchase.By May 15th all the items had been delivered and it was time for the group to get busy. Matthew and the students then set to work building shelves, painting quotes, preparing a fish tank and arranging the furniture that they had purchased in the room. All the students that use the room really love the new look and say it is a really nice space to be able to talk with the counsellor. “We are so grateful to If you care share for all the work they have done and continue to do at our school,” said Dianne Davis, Assistant Headteacher at Greenfield Community College.

Unsure future for Garden GuildTwo and a half years ago Newton Aycliffe Garden Guild shut its doors, and just last week, Trimdon Station Garden Club also closed for good, news which troubles the volun-teers who run Shildon’s Garden Guild in Civic Hall Square. Both clubs had been in ex-istence for over 80 years, however a lack of volun-teers meant that there was no-one left to keep this legacy going. The Shildon club is now in its 38th year and members are also discovering that volunteers are hard to come by, with just three volunteer committee men and an honorary secre-

tary. Three of the men are 82, while the youngest in the group is 72 years old.The Secretary of the club, Les Iddon, commented, “We are lucky here, all of our deliveries come on a wagon with a fork lift attached, so there’s no hand balling, but like other clubs before us there are no young people willing to help. What’s our future? I don’t know.”Anyone who would like to help the Shildon Garden Guild, which sells garden-ing products at bargain prices, should call in to the club (behind the Civic Hall) on a Sunday morning between 9.30 and 11.30am.

Dear Editor,

I was in the cemetery at Shildon on Sunday 18th June visiting my husband’s grave.

When I went to the bins to put the old flowers in, I saw someone had dumped a Dyson hoover, and in another there was an office chair.

I think it is shocking when there is a council recycle centre only a mile along the road. I know that the paper can’t do anything but it might put the people/person to shame.

Police uncover cannabis grow thanks to community’s help

A man has been arrested after a massive cannabis haul was discovered in a house on Redworth Road, Shildon. The town’s Neighbourhood Police Team executed a Magistrates search warrant at the address on Friday 16th June. They recov-

ered 330 mature cannabis plants as well as a quantity of expensive equipment. A man named Dung Van Voe was arrested at the scene and later charged and remanded in custody until 18th July, when he will appear at Durham Crown Court.

The youngsters placed themselves in a giant jigsaw at the Cathedral.

Year 6 prepare for transition to secondary schoolYear 6 children of Saint John’s CofE (Aided) Primary headed to Durham Cathedral last week to join church schools from across the diocese as they reflected together on the coming changes. The end of Year 6 can be an emotional time with many children finding the transition to secondary school both exciting and scary. Every year, as part of the Saint John’s Schools commitment to support the pupils in coping with change, Year 6 visit the Ca-thedral. Once there, they had the opportunity to engage in activities around the Cathedral, enjoying the building as they went. With a chance to write their worries, to put them-selves into an enormous jigsaw and make flags cele-brating the good moments of primary school, there was a buzz of conversation and laughter. Following the activities the children gathered with the rest of the schools present to listen to Bishop

Paul Butler, the Bishop of Durham, talk about the importance of knowing that each child really matters.

As they climbed on the bus to return home, one child commented, “That was awesome, when are we coming again?”

17 year sentence for convicted rapistA 45-year-old man from Coundon Grange has been jailed for 17 years after being found guilty of multiple rapes.Derek Cairns appeared before Teesside Crown Court via video link from Durham Prison, where he was convicted of seven charges of rape, six of which were specimen counts (several violations of the same offence).Judge Simon Hickey de-scribed how during one attack Cairns, of Brockwell Court, said: “You know you want it” and threatened that he could do what he wanted.

Judge Hickey went on to say that Cairns offences were ‘dreadful’ and that the violence went ‘above and beyond’ the rapes.Despite receiving refer-ence letters from Cairns’ parents and his serving police officer sister, Judge Hickey handed him a 17 year sentence, of which he must serve half.Cairns was also made subject of an indefinite restraining order and was barred from working with vulnerable adults or children. He will also have to notify the authorities of his movements when he is eventually released.
