Following the trial the defendant was sentenced to a stint in the stocks. Quite a lenient punishment when you consider that back in 1361, this defendant would have been hung for theft. The children enjoyed throwing wet sponges at the defendant, so much that they all requested to go into the stocks and receive the same punishment! Anne Dockray, Headmis- tress at the school, said that the children had thoroughly enjoyed being involved with the Magis- trates in the Community programme over the last two years. An open letter to the leader of Durham County Council, Simon Henig

I was going to write about the maintenance which much have cost tens of thousands of pounds in marking out the fifty or so bus stop bays on roads in Shildon.

Unfortunately at a time of belt tightening, cutting of services and amenities by Durham County Council the work which cost thousands was all wasted.

OUR MONEY WAS WASTED.

Starting last Thursday there was large scale resurfacing work carried out in the town which covered up all the new bus stop markings.

I believe the Town’s County Councillors all get notice of what is happening in their area, as do the local Town Council; it is remarkable that no one noticed that they got the main-tenance the wrong way round.

Perhaps Durham County Council could let us know how many youth sessions, how many care hours for the elderly, or drop in sessions could have been provided with the tens of thousands that was wasted in Shildon. For measure how many times has this happened elsewhere in the County?
