Shildon Football Club, founded in 1890, is cel-ebrating its 125th anniver-sary this year.In recognition of this mile-stone, the club is hosting a commemorative Sports-man's Dinner, sponsored by Shildon AFC Supporters Club, at County Durham’s prestigious Redworth Hall. The evening's special guest speaker, sponsored by Identity Consult, will be Jeff Stelling of Sky Sports fame.Since 1994, football fans across the nation have enjoyed listening to Hartle-pool fan Stelling's frenetic goal announcements as the presenter of Gillette Soccer Saturday for Sky Sports. He also presents Sky's coverage of the Champions League and from 2009 until 2011 he presented Channel 4's cult afternoon quiz show, Countdown. The popular presenter has been named as Sports Broadcaster of the Year for five successive years by the Sports Journalists' Associa-tion, based on a poll of its
members, making him the only broadcaster to win the award since its inaugura-tion.The evening will be compered by local non-league ground hopper Peter Sixsmith. The event will include a three-course silver service dinner, an auction of high quality sports memora-bilia and a blind envelope with the chance to win a year's membership to the Redworth Hall fitness suite (worth £500) and a year's membership to the ladies health spa (worth £200).Tickets for the event, which takes place on Saturday 27th June from 7pm, are priced at £40 and are avail-able now. Tables of ten are available at £400 per table but tickets are selling fast with half the available tables already booked. To book your seat or table contact Shildon AFC Director, Norman Smith on 07500 874505 or by email at [email protected].
Children, staff and gover-nors at Timothy Hackworth Primary School are delight-ed to announce that the school has been re-award-ed the Rights Respecting School Level 2 Award. Assessors from Unicef visited the school in November 2014 and were very impressed at how, since achieving Level 2
status three years ago, the school’s continuing Rights Respecting School journey has developed and extended. The Assessors also com-mented how a “clear rights-respecting climate prevails in all areas of the school, encouraging con-fidence, developing skills and promoting equality of
opportunity” and how “the adults provide children with the skills necessary to make appropriate deci-sions about their learning, health, safety and wellbe-ing.”The children, staff and gov-ernors would like to extend an invitation to members of the Shildon community to join them for afternoon tea on Tuesday 24th February, from 1.30pm to 3pm. Staff will be helping the children to make and serve Fairtrade tea, coffee, cakes and biscuits and, during the afternoon, there will be an opportunity to hear about the school and their Rights Respecting Award and to also have a short tour. “Whether you are a previous pupil or staff, a parent or are just inter-ested to see what’s hap-pening at Timothy Hack-worth School, you will be made very welcome,” said a spokesperson.Numbers are limited so call ahead to book your place on 01388 772959; if you call during the half term holiday simply leave a message or email [email protected].

Police are appealing for information following the burglary of a house on Byerley Road (close to Mid-dleton Road) this week. The incident occurred over-night between Sunday 8th February and Monday 9th February when the thieves forced a rear ground floor window to gain entry and ransacked every room in the house. The items stolen are of par-ticular concern to police. Namely 10-15 high powered air rifles and a similar quantity of ornamental and hunting knives - which are potentially lethal - and formed part of an extensive collection. Sgt Simon Cowan of Shildon CID commented, “Items like this in the wrong hands are obviously potentially highly dangerous and could be used in various aspects of
criminality. It’s also fair to say that most of what was stolen was unique and easily identifiable, especially the air weapons, most of which were gas powered. This means that it will be very difficult for the thieves to ‘move the weapons on’ and a number of likely outlets have already been alerted to their descriptions. “I think it will be very dif-ficult to conceal this cache of weapons in a small town
like Shildon and I would appeal for any information about the whereabouts of the stolen property or knowledge of the in-dividuals involved in the burglary.” It is believed the victim was specifically targeted for his weapons as other items of value were left behind by the thieves.Anyone with information should contact Sgt 341 Simon Cowan on 101.

Timothy Hackworth is a name that has come to sum up Shildon’s heritage; we have the school, the road and the museum to mention just a few of the things that relate directly to him. We also have his grave and memorial, erected by those who loved him as a person all those years ago. As time passes things decay and the site of Timothy Hackworth’s grave was no exception, however thanks to the support of County Councillor and Shildon Mayor Henry Nicholson, the grave has now been restored. Cleaned by profession-als over the last week the grave looks fresh and readable and there are plans to include it in an eventual town trail. Rev David commented, “Timothy Hackworth was a man of faith, a Methodist local preacher, a person who encouraged the growth of the whole person through his provision of schooling
and chapels. Today Chris-tians of all denominations can proudly walk in his footsteps, seeing our com-munity flourish once more
through hard work, perse-verance, and compassion.” The newly cleaned grave can be seen to the left of Saint John’s church.
Grave restored to former glory
Timothy Hackworth’s grave and memorial have this week been attentively restored.

John William Rennison was listed as living in Jubilee Road, Shildon, but on ap-pearing before magistrates at Newton Aycliffe, he gave a Ferryhill address. The 29 year-old was not represented and pleaded guilty to the charge of being drunk and disorderly in Darlington Road, Ferry-
hill, on 19th January. The court heard that officers were called to assist in restraining Rennison, who was said to be angry and too drunk to be reasoned with. Magistrates fined the de-fendant a total of £208, including court costs and victim support surcharge.

Conway enters the conservation workshopLocomotion, the National Railway Museum at Shildon welcomed “Conway,” an industrial locomotive, to the museum’s conservation workshop last week, after its arrival at the museum on Thursday 22nd January, from the Middleton Railway.Conway was built by Kitson and Company of Leeds in 1933. The design dates to around 1917, when Manning, Wardle and Co built six examples for Stewarts and Lloyds at Corby quarry, and iron ore quarry in the East Midlands. Originally given a works number of 5469 and then later numbered No. 44, Conway worked at Corby right up to the end of steam and was then selected for private pres-ervation.It was purchased by the Middleton Railway from Northamptonshire Iron Trust as an example of a Kitson built locomotive for the railway. The locomotive has been in store since purchased with a long-term ambition to see it restored and displayed in the Engine House at Middle-ton Railway. The partnership between Locomotion, the National Railway Museum at Shildon and the Middleton Railway will see the long-term am-bitions for the locomotive fulfilled. “Conway” arrived at
the site in Shildon and moved into the museum’s workshop last week. The project gives Loco-motion’s heritage skills trainees and trainees from Groundworks NE and Cumbria (supported by museum volunteers) the opportunity to work on a detailed restora-tion project and further develop their skills and experience and employ-ability. It will help the trainees and possibly future generations retain the traditional skills essential for railway pres-ervation.The project will also give museum visitors the chance to see heritage conservation in action from the viewing platform
overlooking Locomotion’s Conservation Workshop. Those with a keen interest in the project can follow its progress on the museum’s Facebook page. Middleton Railway is currently undertaking research into the original appearance of the locomo-tive under the Stuarts and Lloyd livery. The work will include new steelwork, repairs to the tank and buffer beams as well as a total repaint. Replacement nameplates, work plates and S&L plates will be cast and new windows will be fitted in the locomotive cab.The project is due to start this January at Locomo-tion, the National Railway Museum at Shildon.

Ashley Fairhurst, now of School Street, Howden le Wear, will return to the Magistrates’ Court at Newton Aycliffe after a pre-sentence report was requested from the Proba-tion Service. The 24 year-old had pleaded guilty to a charge that, on 11th December, he had entered a detached garage of a property in Mid-dridge and stole a power washer, valued at £100. Others had been present when the theft had occurred and they had also stolen items. The court heard that Fair-
hurst, formerly of Shildon, had moved out of the area in order to get away from bad influences and that since moving, his life had been a lot more stable. Fairhurst, who has a long list of previous offences and owes the court over £1,700 in fines, told mag-istrates that he would not be able to attend court on 25th February, as he was due in hospital to undergo an operation on his hand and therefore his next ap-pearance will now be on 4th March. He was released on uncon-ditional bail.

Jack secures American Football pro contract
Jack Curry, who is off to play for American Football team Cologne Falcons.
A local teenager is about to touchdown in Germany after securing an American Football pro-fessional contract.Jack Curry, 19, is off to play with the Cologne Falcons after passing a trial and full medical with the German Football League team. The initial eight month contract starts in March and as well as his salary, the club will also fund Jack’s accommodation, flights and healthcare. He will play at their 12,000-capacity Müngersdorf Sportpark, Ostkampf-bahn.The dream move follows a five-year love of the sport, which started when Jack, of Eldon, played in his school team at Woodham Academy in Newton Aycliffe. The team competed in the British American Football League, where they were beaten final-ists three years running before being accepted into the American High School League of Europe and playing in matches as far afield as Sicily. It was here Jack was noticed by ex NFL player and current Sky Sports presenter Cecil Martin, who invited him to play for Team Europe in San Antonio, Texas. His two week stay was followed by three months with the Bielefeld Bulldogs in the German Football League
Division 2, which led to the move to the Cologne Falcons.Jack qualified last year with a BTEC Level 3 in Sport at Bishop Auckland College, who provided financial support for his US trip.He said, “I really enjoyed my course and learned so much, and very much appreciated the help the college gave me with the US trip, covering the cost of accommodation and health insurance.“The experience of going over to Texas showed everyone how serious I took the sport and that it wasn’t just a phase. It helped me realise I could follow my dream – to play
American football at a higher level and make a career out of it.”Katy Graham, the college’s Learning Area Manager for Sport & Public Services, is delighted at his pro contract success. She said, “It is certainly a first for the college – one of our graduates becoming a professional American Football player – but if anyone deserves it Jack does. “He is totally committed and very determined and was talent spotted by a former NFL player who is now a TV pundit, which is a great accolade in itself. We wish him every success in his sporting career.”

A new and imaginative approach to coach develop-ment is being introduced to coaches from throughout the region on 21st February at Sunnydale Leisure Centre in Shildon. The day marks a significant milestone in the progression of the game in the North East. Initially the focus of Rugby League in the North East was on participation. It was felt that elite players would always come out the “heartland” of the game. This has all now changed. The game now recognises that players from what were regarded as “devel-opment regions” can, with the right support, reach the very top. However much of this depends upon the quality of coaching provided by community clubs such as the Tigers and this is where the new approach comes in.John Simpson, chair of the Tigers commented, “We want our coaches to match the best from throughout the country. This new approach ensures that this will happen. It means that in the near future England squads may be coached by coaches from our area.”John went on to comment “This is a win win situation. All our players, irrespec-tive of ability, will benefit from the skills which our coaches will develop. It will give players the con-fidence to take those vital steps required to go on to a
professional career.“The North East has been successful in turning out quality sports people in many sports and it is now the time for this to happen in Rugby League. With the player development plans in place, and the support from Newcastle Thunder, the sky is the limit for our lads.”Michael Heap, who is co-ordinating the programme throughout the North East, backed up what John had said. Michael suggested that “the game has perhaps belatedly recognised that the North East provides a vast pool of untapped talent.
