Ferryhill youngster, Izzy Race, is a big fan of Youtube, and one evening, after watching a
Izzy loses locks to raise funds for children’s cancer charity
video about the work of the Little Princess Trust charity, which makes wigs for children who have
lost their hair as a result of cancer treatment, she spoke to her parents, Debbie and Troy, and told them she intended to have her flowing golden locks cut off to raise money for the charity’s work.“We are so proud of her,” said Debbie, “She decided on this herself and we are overwhelmed by the support she has been given.” Izzy, who attends Cleves Cross Primary School, arranged to have her hair cut at Bronzing Beauty in Ferryhill on Wednesday, 24th November, just a few days after her ninth birthday.Initially, Izzy had hoped to raise £350, which is the cost to the charity of sup-plying one wig, but online and offline donations, at the last count, had exceeded £900.Anyone wishing to donate can still do so online by visiting justgiving.com and searching for ‘Izzys Big Chop’.
Before and after: Izzy Race had her flowing locks cut off to raise money for the Little Princess Trust, which provides real hair wigs for children suffering from cancer.

The Chilton Gala Com-mittee held a meeting at Chilton School on Saturday 14th November to announce the success-ful application for addi-tional gala funding and to organise the date of next year’s gala. The meeting was attended by the 4Together Area Action Partnership, who administer a Capital Small Grants Scheme which dis-tributes funds annually.A spokesperson said: “The Chilton Gala Committee would like to thank all who attended the Chilton School meeting.“We were successful with our application to the Area Action Partnership’s Small Grants Scheme, and this will now enable the Gala Committee to buy the equipment necessary for the running of further galas.“It was agreed that the date for next year’s Chilton
Gala will be Saturday, 23rd July 2016. “As in previous years, free tables will be provided to local and international charities to help them raise funds. “Further news about the gala will be published during the months before the day.“The Chilton Gala Commit-tee gives its sincere thanks to the Ferryhill and Chilton Chapter, for their unfailing announcements about Chil-ton’s annual galas.“Their reports go a long way in ensuring our suc-cessful day.”“In addition, it would not be possible to run the Gala without the donations the Committee receives from local businesses, from Chilton Town Council and from individuals. Their ex-cellent support and finan-cial commitment, along-side funding, is what makes the day a great success.”

Ferryhill Town Council’s new pavilion at Mains-forth Sports Complex and Friends of Miners Welfare in Chilton, were among the winners at the County Durham Environment Partnership’s Environment Awards 2015.Ferryhill Town Council was presented with a Com-mendation in the Built En-vironment category for its “valuable contribution to sporting and social provi-sion, and for improving the local environment.” Designer and Project Manager of the new building, Steve Macdonald of Sports Clubhouses; Con-tractor, Kurtis Tarn of TB Tarn; Mayor of Ferryhill, Cllr Pauline Crathorne; and Grants and Projects Officer for Ferryhill Town Council, Karen Younghusband attended the event and were delighted to accept the commendation.Mainsforth Sports Pavilion, which is home to Mains-forth Cricket Club, was opened by Paul Colling-wood MBE earlier this year and replaces an old cricket pavilion.
The project cost £400,000 which was secured from a range of external funders, including Lafarge-Tarmac Ltd, Sport England, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), and the neighbourhood budgets of county councillors. The project was the result of years of hard work by officers of the council, Mainsforth Cricket Club, and the designers and con-tractors. Mayor, Councillor Pauline Crathorne said: “It was a wonderful evening and it was great to see such a wide range of worthwhile projects being developed in County Durham. “Ferryhill Town Council is thrilled to be amongst those picking up a Com-mendation for its project.”Meanwhile, Friends of Miners Welfare were rewarded in the Places and Spaces category, “For the outstanding contribution to the improvement of the local environment and positive effect on the local economy, health and well-being of local residents and visitors.”
Brian Turner, Vice-Chair of Friends of the Park said: “I was delighted to accept an award on behalf of the Friends of the Miners Welfare from Mr Lewis Stokes (Development Re-lations Co-ordinator) of Banks Mining Group for the outstanding contribution and improvement that we have made to the local en-vironment. “This was in recognition of the redevelopment of the Pavilion within the Miners Welfare Recreation Ground at Chilton. “Prior to this time the Pavilion had fallen into disrepair and was virtually derelict. “Thanks should be noted to the many local organisa-tions and businesses who gave generously to allow this project to come to fruition. “The Friends of the Park Committee in conjunction with Chilton Town Council and the Trustees of the Miners Welfare intend to carry on raising funds for future developments to further enhance the facili-ties for the township.”The winners were an-nounced at a ceremony on Tuesday 24th November.

Friendly, local, reliable service
Despite the terrible weather conditions, resi-dents turned out on Friday night for the switching on of Chilton’s Christmas lights. Assisting the Mayor, Coun-cillor Elizabeth Bruce, was local youngster Millie Pinder, and this year’s Gala Princess, Georgia Holmes.Canon Jon Bell conducted the service and, as children from Chilton Primary Choir sang, members of St Aidan’s Church kindly circulated with sweet mince pies and refreshments. Even Santa
Claus stopped by to speak to our younger residents.A spokesperson said: “Members of the Town Council would like to thank all those involved with the Christmas lights and the official switch on event, particularly St Aidan’s Church and Chilton Primary School.”“The Town Council would like to remind residents that the Civic Carol Service will be held on Tuesday 15th December at St Aidan’s Church commenc-ing at 7pm.”

Ferryhill Business and Enterprise College music students are joined on the stage by international opera star, Ian Storey, who also visited all of Ferryhill’s primary schools.
International operatic tenor, Ian Storey visits Ferryhill schools
Pupils from all the schools in Ferryhill have been involved in an inspirational concert with international operatic tenor, Ian Storey. Ian, the son of a Chilton miner and dubbed the Billy Elliott of the Opera World, took time from his hectic schedule to show students what they can aspire to if they work hard and follow their dreams. Ian worked with Ferryhill Business and Enterprise College (FBEC) students in the morning as they rehearsed The Iona Boat Song ready for a public per-formance in the afternoon. He delighted the budding performers by sharing stories of his performances in all the major opera houses across Europe and America and by recounting how he has had to learn to sing in six different lan-guages. Students took the opportu-nity to quiz Ian about vocal exercises, singing posture
and projection techniques. In the afternoon pupils from all the primary schools and FBEC music students joined together to give an outstanding concert. The finale saw all the schools joining Ian to sing the Iona Boat Song accom-panied by former music teacher George Hethering-ton on piano. The excitement contin-ued to rise when their adventure was not only recorded and broadcast by BBC Radio Tees, but also for television by BBC Look North. All the pupils gave an outstanding vocal perfor-mance with Ian and spoke eloquently when inter-viewed.A busy day for everyone was rounded off at the prestigious FBEC Awards Evening where Ian was guest of honour. Ian presented students with awards for achieve-
ment and performance before he and the music students once again de-lighted everyone with another excellent rendition of the Iona Boat Song.Glenys, from Approach Too, the project set up to raise the aspirations of young people in Ferryhill and Chilton, said: “This has been an amazing day for children and young people in Ferryhill and one that they will remember for a long time. “I want to say a huge thank you to Ian, the pupils, students and staff who took part and all the com-munity who came along to enjoy the concert. “Also thanks to Gary Wright for his help and support and Liz Parker Berry. “Ferryhill and Chilton is a great community. It’s a strong community and that’s why Ian, George and others are so keen to come back, they still feel part of it.”

Miss Chloe McCormack with the Mayor, Councillor Pauline Crathorne and Santa Claus switching on the Ferryhill Christmas lights.
Chloe, Santa and the Mayor switch on Ferryhill’s lightsOnce again Ferryhill Town Council and the Ferryhill 2000 Committee played host to Ferryhill’s Annual Christmas Fayre on Friday 27th November. The event commenced at 2pm with a Craft Fayre in St Luke’s Parish Centre which was fully booked and was well attended by local residents.Local school children, their teachers and members of the public, met at St Luke’s Church and at 4pm they formed a candle lit parade which was led by Santa Claus in his sleigh which ended at Ferryhill Town Hall where children from the local schools held a carol service in the Town Hall gardens. At 4.30pm Miss Chloe Mc-Cormack from Cleves Cross Primary School switched on the Ferryhill Christmas Lights.Santa’s Grotto was located in the E Café which proved to be very popular with the younger children who attended the event. In conjunction with this a fun fair was held at the town centre car park and this too was well sup-ported. All of these events were enjoyed by hundreds of Fer-ryhill residents and their families who attended the various activities despite the inclement weather. The Mayor, Councillor
Pauline Crathorne com-mented that this was once again a successful Christ-mas Fayre which was well attended and enjoyed by many of the residents of Ferryhill.
This support was appreci-ated by members of the 2000 Committee and the Town Council.Photographs of the event are available from the Town Council for 25p each.

Dear Editor,Can I please, through the Chapter, say a big thank you and congratulations to a small group of very kind, talented ladies. The ladies of Dean Bank Chat and Craft Group, and friends of the group - they know who they are and come from as far afield as Chilton, Spennymoor, Bishop Auckland, Tow Law, Sedgefield, Cleckheaten and, of course, Ferryhill - made beautiful blankets, and filled over 200 shoeboxes with jumpers, hats, scarves, toys etc.The ladies also organised car boot and table top sales to raise money for their transport.Thank you so much to all who helped. The very best of wishes to you all for a happy, healthy Christmas and New Year.Kind regards,Name and address supplied
Dear Editor,The Durham Light Infantry Museum (DLI) is a tribute to one of the finest army regiments that ever served the British people. Therefore, it is fair to say that the Museum deserves funding, protection and preservation.Durham County Council have an alleged £214 million in the bank so they can surely find some loose change to keep the DLI Museum in Durham City.I hope the residents of County Durham fight for those who fought for us to keep the Museum in the City of Durham - its rightful home.”Yours sincerely,Councillor Peter Davies, Chilton Town Council Ferryhill Town Band now

Tributes paid to community stalwart and former mayor
Tributes have been paid to former community stalwart, David Newell from Ferryhill, whose funeral took place on Tuesday 1st December after he lost his six month battle with cancer.Mr Newell, who was 52, was a councillor on Sedgefield Borough Council between 1999 and 2009. He became the borough’s youngest mayor when he was elected in 2002.His sister, Bernadette, said: “David served with great pleasure and honour. He loved his role and invited his family along at every appropriate opportunity. We were all very proud
of him and his ongoing achievements. “He was a very private person but he absolutely loved helping people and he saw the good in people, even if everyone else had turned their backs on them.“He was 100 per cent dedi-cated to the community. He was the only person who could get away with a suit and the flip flops he was well known for wearing to work.”As Mayor, Mr Newell met US President George Bush in 2003 when he visited the county with former prime minister and constituency MP, Tony Blair. Playing at home against Darlington, in developing winter storm conditions, proved a tough test for Fer-ryhill Under 9’s on Sunday 29th November. The home side started very brightly with a great bursting run down the wing from Kacie, who let loose a shot that produced an alert stop from Darlington’s keeper. As the rain came down, so did the shots on Dar-lington’s goal, with all the strikers - Rio, Mason and Owen - keeping warm and busy.Kacie also kept the pressure on with powerful long range throw-ins to the strikers. However, the storm
pressure also began to build with the driving rain turning to horizontal sleet and Darlington, with the wind behind, were able to score two great goals before the half time break. With the gusting wind, rain and hail behind them in the second half, it was now Ferryhill’s turn to take advantage of the weather conditions. Kyle, receiving the ball midway into Darlington’s half, struck an audacious shoot that looped up high to drop sweetly into the goal to halve the deficit. As the weather conditions worsened, both teams struggled, but it was Fer-ryhill, through Rio with the assistance of Mason, who
Thrilling draw in stormy conditions for Ferryhill U9’s
pulled off a great finish to level the score at 2-2. Darlington, however, weren’t finished and retook the lead in the face of the weather to make it 3-2.But Ferryhill showed their resolve, as they have done all season, and levelled again with another great goal from Rio.After the match, coach Wayne Dobson said: “In very difficult playing condi-tions the team did a fan-tastic job of coming from behind twice to finally level the game. It was a great result against a dif-ficult Darlington side.”The second friendly match was abandoned due to unplayable weather condi-tions.
Ferryhill Town Youth U7’s got back to winning ways last weekend with a 4-0 win against Darlington RA Spitfires. Ferryhill went 1-0 up on 10 minutes when a through ball from Conner Chaytor found Jayden Wilkinson, who slotted into the bottom corner for the only goal of the first half.
In the second half, Fer-ryhill made a change with Jude Tracey coming out of goal and Jayden taking his place. Ferryhill were quickly on the front foot and Jude scored instantly, followed by a goal from Conner. Jude got his second and Ferryhill’s 4th with a great run and finish. The weather started to deteriorate as the second game began. Ben Dargue
Comfortable win for U7’s started in goal but was rarely troubled. Unfortunately, Oliver Heaviside had to go off with an injury. In the final moments, Zak Lauder won the game with a superb strike into the top corner. The final whistle was met with cheers from the parents as everyone was soaked to the skin. Next for the U7’s is a home game against Primrose on Saturday, 5th December.

On an extremely windy Sunday morning (29th November), Ferryhill U8’s travelled to Billingham Juniors for another away league fixture. The performance matched the previous week’s efforts, with a comprehen-sive 5-0 victory making it two wins out of two on the road.Ferryhill named an un-changed starting line up with Aidan, George, Noah, Zach and Jamie. The boys dominated pos-session in the first half and made it count, going 2-0 up with two goals from Zach for a comfortable half-time lead. The side continued in the same manner in the second half with two more goals from Zach and a deserved 5th goal which came from
George who battled to win the ball before finishing confidently. Aidan made some great saves in the second half and Aaron F and Carlton came on to keep the work rate up and finish the game with a clean sheet. The second game saw a dif-ferent starting line up with Aidan, Aaron S, Carlton, Kole, Aaron F and Noah.Another impressive team display saw Kole break the deadlock early on with a powerful drive. Aaron F then made it two with a long range finish. Jamie then went on to complete a well deserved hat trick to make the final score mirror that of the first game, ending with a 5-0 win to Ferryhill for two excellent wins to brighten up the difficult conditions.
