Due to an error made by the Crier the Mayor’s message printed in the Christmas issue was incorrect. We apologise for the mistake. The message should have read:“It is a great honour and privilege to represent you all, the Townspeople of Shildon. We have attended many events, both in Shildon and around our region, and whilst lasting friendships have been forged considera-tion has also been given to the variety of challenges that face us all in these changing and difficult times.Fundraising is extremely important for all organisa-tions, and thankfully, we all can help, either by donating time, money items or just promoting events. My charities this year are the Mara Unit, Bishop Auckland General Hospital and Help for Heroes, who again need our help and support through difficult times. Thank you to everyone who has supported my fundraising.
My prayers are with all of the armed forces serving our country, wherever they may be this Christmas and I hope that they all return safely to their families. We owe them so much for providing us with the comfort of being safe in our own country.Only too often young people are blamed for all of the trouble in the area, but I
have had the great honour of attending and presenting awards to young people of this town who have achieved greatness and will continue to be proud young people of the town. Again, this was demonstrated during the Angels and Kings Procession and Carol Service. Thank you all.I am very grateful for all the help and support that I have had from the staff of Shildon Town Council, without whom I could not have carried out my duties as Town Mayor. I also wish to give thanks to the Town Crier, Shildon Council work-force and the staff at the Civic Hall. It goes without saying that I should thank my wife Pat and daughters Louise and Rachael for their unconditional support over the last 33 years.On this note I wish all the Townspeople and ex Shil-donians around the globe a happy and peaceful Christ-mas. Can I ask that during this holy time you all bear in mind the sick, elderly, lonely and anyone strug-gling financially who would benefit from a neighbourly kind word. I would like to finish by wishing you all a happy and healthy New Year as I am sure we will all meet new challenges in 2015. God bless you all. x”

The volunteers of Shildon Alive! (A Saint John’s Church project) gathered at the Civic Hall before Christmas for a celebration of an amazing year. With 64 volunteers and partners sitting down for a Christmas lunch, there was much conversation about all that has been achieved.With two community gardens, a summer guer-rilla gardening project, a well used Credit Union, a popular hub in Church
Street, a food aid project and much more, the last twelve months have been busy indeed. Shildon Alive! was es-tablished to help Shildon become a happier, more fulfilling place to live. As the volunteers were pre-sented with certificates of appreciation Revd David told them that he stood in awe of their achievements. “Shildon is our town,” he said, “and it is up to each one of us to give of our-
selves to make it a flourish-ing town. “As the austerity choices made by central govern-ment bite ever deeper we need to remind ourselves that what is special about Shildon is its people, resil-ient, determined, support-ive people who care about their community. Shildon Alive! has an exciting 2015 ahead building on the last year to make an ever greater difference to our town.”

Children from Timothy Hackworth Primary school visited Holly lodge Care Home on Maddison Street, Shildon, on Friday 19th December, when they per-
formed Christmas Carols for residents, families and staff. “We would like to say a huge thank you to the children and teachers as
everyone really enjoyed the singing and the chatting with the children afterwards,” said a spokesperson for the care home.
At 10.15pm on Thursday 1st January, a registration plate - GJ03 WXY - was stolen from a vehicle in Sunnyside Avenue, Shildon.It is believed this number plate may have been
dumped on the Jubilee Estate. If anyone knows who took the registration plate, or if anyone comes across it, they are urged to contact Shildon Police on 101.
Just before Christmas Shildon Community Safety Group, based in the Town Council Offices, organised a ‘Santa Safety Hunt’ when youngsters in the town were asked to find 14 Santas in various shop windows along Main Street and Church Street. On Santa’s hat was a safety tip which the children had to find. They then had to write down the message from each shop for a chance to win a Christmas sweet tree. There was a different safety tip in each shop window. In Hays Travel it was ‘Always cross roads
where you can see left and right clearly’. Clems’ safety tip was ‘Don’t give your mobile phone number to people you don’t know’. After the children had collated all the answers and written them down, the form had to be returned to the Council Offices where the draw was made on 19th December. The winners were Matthew Harnett, age 6, Maple Avenue; Isobel Owen age 5, Garbutt Street; and Trinity Colling age 7, Thomas Street, who each received a Christmas sweet tree. Two runners-
up were Lewis Owen age 8, Garbutt Street, and Sophie Fletcher age 7, Dale Road, who each received a selection box. Santa’s safety hunt
Two Shildon people, Claire Smith and Edward O’Neil, of Byerley Road, were both arrested on Christmas Eve for a burglary at Holly Lodge Care Home.
They were charged on Christmas Day for this burglary as well as for ad-ditional handling offences. Both are currently on court bail.

The children of Shildon were transformed into Santa’s helpers in the run-up to Christmas. Thirty children from two Saint John’s Church projects (Explorers and Kids in the Garden) came together to help make the Christmas of 120 elderly town residents.With presents beautifully created by Sweet Greet-ings, the children braved cold, rain and wind to
sing on Jubilee Road, Hackworth Close, Plevna Mews, Harrison Court and in Redworth House. With the songs sung they knocked on the resident’s doors, who were amazed to discover that rather than collecting money the children were giving them a present. Organised by three Shildon Alive! volunteers, Kelly Maychell, Michelle Glazier, and Zara-Lucy Duncanson,
the project was funded by Shildon Communities First.George Turner (94) summed it all up when given his gift by Eve and Blossom; he said with a happy smile “This is really Christmas”. Rev. David thanked everyone for their support and when the ‘work’ was done the kids got to meet Santa at Saint John’s and each received a surprise present of their own.
Overnight between Saturday 27th and Sunday 28th December, a child’s green bike and a child’s yellow Quadbike were stolen from a secure shed in Auckland Wynd. Tyre marks were followed from the scene onto

With candles, oranges, and cheery children Saint John’s C of E aided School Christingle was underway. Over 90 parents arrived to watch and listen to the children sing, tell stories, and dress two of their teachers up as human Christingles in a service held before Christmas. For six weeks Revd. David and a team of children
drawn from years 4, 5 and 6 had planned and prepared. The children wrote prayers, prepared the script and put their own twist on the familiar tale of Christmas as they spoke about Jesus, a present from God, who lit up the world. Headteacher Andrew Farnell summing up at the end took the opportunity to thank everyone for their
support. “This is about your children discovering and learning new skills every day,” he said, before wishing every-body a very merry Christ-mas. Revd. David then showed a short Disney Christmas video as a treat for the kids before the whole church erupted into ‘We wish you a Merry Christmas.’

A caravan which was parked on the roadside at Front Row, Eldon, was stolen between 8.45pm on Wednesday 10th and 7.30am on Friday 12th

In the early hours of Wednesday 24th December, between 2am and 5.30am, a car window was smashed on Vaughan Street, Shildon. Anyone with information

It will soon be Panto time at the Civic Hall in Shildon when The Tearaways Youth Theatre Group present ‘The Disney Pantomime’ on Thursday 22nd, Friday 23rd and Saturday 24th January at 7.30pm, with a matinee on Sunday 25th January at 2pm. A spokesperson said, “This is a great family show with many of your favourite Disney characters in it. Boo and hiss at the evil Captain Hook, the Ugly Sisters and many others, but cheer and shout for Snow White,

Anna Munford from Shildon was so impressed at the care her aunt Loraine Lye received when diagnosed with breast cancer that she decided to dedicate her
21st Birthday party, held on Tuesday 2nd December, to fundraise for the Univer-sity Hospital of North Tees’ breast unit and the Mara unit at Bishop Auckland
General Hospital. Anna and her family arranged a raffle, raising £1,187, and would like to thank everyone for the amazing prizes donated.

Visit Locomotion, the National Railway Museum at Shildon on Saturday 10th and Sunday 11th January for your chance to access some very special vehicles at the museum, including the V2 Class locomotive Green Arrow and ex-US Army Transportation Corps S160 No.223 locomotive during the January Cab It! event.Visitors can get close-up access to vehicles within the collection, see inside the vehicles and board loco footplates.Visitors will also be able to get up close to Green Arrow, the London North Eastern Railway Class V2 No. 4471.The V2 Class locomotives were designed by Sir Nigel
Gresley and built from 1936 to 1944. They were adapt-able and very powerful. They really proved their worth during World War II as they helped the UK with the issue of moving many goods quickly. What was very special about the V2s was that they could pull very long trains and could cope with long journeys, this meant that it took less time to load and dispatch goods. During WWII there was a great need to move domestic supplies and also move munitions for the war effort. Petrol was scarce and rationed and the vast quantities of goods couldn’t be moved quickly enough by
road. The railways supported the essential haulage needs of the war effort and the V2s were the leaders on this front. A thought provoking radio drama entitled ‘The Fer-ryhill Philosophers’, was broadcast this week on BBC radio 4. The two-part drama set in Ferryhill was written by author, radio and television producer Michael Chaplin, who was originally from our region.Micheal’s father was also the influential author Sid Chaplin, who was originally born in Shildon and gives his name to the town’s library. He worked for many years in the Dean and Chapter Colliery in Ferryhill, writing between mining shifts. The Ferryhill Philosophers features Joe Snowball, an unemployed ex-miner, and the Hon. Hermione Pink, a slightly disen-chanted senior lecturer. Together, they wrestle with the collision between

Last year the Gymnasts from Athena Gymnastics Academy, based at both Shildon Sunnydale Leisure Centre and Aycliffe Leisure Centre, were very busy competing at both local and national level, which culminated in several of the gymnasts competing in national finals. Athena were also well received at the Gymfusion 2014 event in Newcastle, receiving excellent reviews from both spectators and other gymnastic teams at the event. The annual Christmas display, held at Newton Aycliffe Leisure centre in December, was watched by over 300 spectators. The showcase involved all gymnasts, from the toddlers in Rec 1, to the superb Disability Sunday Group, as well as gymnasts who will be competing at national competitions in 2015. The harsh words handed out by manager Gary Forrest to the players at Shildon AFC last week must have hit a nerve after he told them to either ‘shape up or get out’. They must have listened to what he was saying as the team put in a good solid performance, beating Bedlington Terriers com-fortably 4 – 1 at Dean Street on Saturday 3rd January.Shildon got off to a perfect start when Darren Richard-son scored a superb indi-vidual goal on four minutes, when he cut in from the left beating two defenders and fired into the roof of the net.Terriers came more into the game and on 17 minutes Steven Young was put through, but keeper Kyle Hayes blocked well with his feet. A minute later Terriers Jordan Nellis blasted over the bar when he may have done better.Half Time: Shildon AFC 1 Bedlington Terriers 0.Straight from the break Shildon went 2 – 0 up when a great three-man-move was finished off with a left foot shot from Mark Doninger. Minutes later
Doninger nearly got his 2nd but fired over the bar.Constant Shildon pressure paid off on the hour when Terriers captain James Harmison’s short back pass was intercepted by Micky Rae who put the ball past the advancing keeper.It was all Shildon control-ling the game and looking dangerous.On 72 minutes it was 4 – 0 when a free kick from 20 yards from Adam Rundle went through the wall and under the keeper.On a rare Terriers attack a shot-come-centre from Liam Davison went straight into the net on 79 minutes.Near the end Terriers’ keeper made good saves from Paul Connor and Chris Emms.Final Score: Shildon AFC 4 Bedlington Terriers 1.Goalscorers: Richardson 4, Doninger 47, Rae 60, Rundle 72.Subs: Connor for Rundle 74, Scroggins for Hodgson 85, Emms for Greulich-Smith 87.Man-of-the-Match: Carl Jones.After the match manager Gary Forrest said, “A good solid team performance”.
