nity to develop the skills to box whilst raising money for a good cause.’’White Collar Boxing originated in New York in 1988 when a doctor and a lawyer trained for a few weeks before boxing each other at a black tie event.Ultra White Collar Boxing is the most established organisation in the UK, running hundreds of events since 2009 and raising money for charity. The organisation is one of Cancer Research UK’s biggest fundraisers in the UK, raising over £2 million in 2015.Anyone interested in donating to Darryl’s fun-draising effort can visit JustGiving.com and search for ‘Darryl Meadows’.Donations can also be given to Darryl in person at Shildon AFC home games, where he operates the matchday burger van.

Helen Goodman MP, speaking at the Small Businesses debate in the House of Com-mons on Tuesday 17th January.
MP questions government’s customs union strategy
Bishop Auckland constitu-ency MP, Helen Goodman has questioned the effect the government’s Brexit strategy will have on local businesses during the Small Businesses debate in the House of Commons on Tuesday 17th January.“The most useful thing that the Treasury could do for small manufacturers in my constituency,” said Ms Goodman, “is announce an objective of staying in the customs union. “Up to now, the Treasury has been a beacon in saying that it wants deci-sions based on analysis, not on rhetoric and ideology.“Can the Minister Secre-tary assure the House that that is still under consid-eration?”Financial Secretary to the
Treasury, Jane Ellison, re-sponded: “These are issues that we are looking at care-fully; the Chancellor has had a series of roundtable meetings with different sectors and industries in recent months, as have all of us Ministers.“We are looking care-fully at what those detailed issues are. “Of course, much more will be said on this and dis-cussed in the House later today, but we are clear that we want to under-stand the detailed issues that businesses face, so that as we move forward to make our future outside the European Union, we can resolve the practical issues that businesses will face in a way that helps the British economy.”
Commenting after the debate, Ms Goodman said: “Theresa May seems not to understand the importance of the customs union (what people used to call the Common Market) to manu-facturers. “In the North East we have an exporting surplus and we can’t afford tariffs or barriers on exports to the EU.”Meanwhile, Ms Goodman’s next contituency surgery will take place on Friday 27th January, from 12 noon at Auckland Youth & Community Centre, Walker Drive, Bishop Auckland. To attend the constituency surgery, register with the Constituency Office on 01388 603075 or by email at [email protected].

Durham County Council’s international relations team is leading a mission to Kostroma, Durham’s twin town, in April.
Teachers wanted for Russian schools visit
Are you a teacher or retired teacher interested in travelling to Russia to teach English classes at Easter?Durham County Council’s international relations team is leading a mission to Kostroma, Durham’s twin town, in April to visit local schools, help Russian teachers with English classes and deliver English lessons to students of various ages and abilities. Attendees will have to pay for their own airfare and visa processing but they will stay with Russian host families for the duration of the stay. Kostroma is 250 miles
north of Moscow and has been twinned with Durham since 1968. Durham County Council has organised many school, cultural and educational exchange visits with the Education Development Institute in Kostroma for several years. Brian Stobie, interna-tional officer with Durham County Council said: “Teachers who have taken part in this exchange in the past have considered it to be a really memorable and worthwhile experience. “It gives teachers in our county the opportunity to discover more about Russian culture and the city of Kostroma, while the
young students and their tutors gain valuable expe-rience”. Anybody interested in taking part should contact the international relations office on 03000 268 501 or email [email protected].

A Shildon man has been ordered to pay £1,000 in compensation to his victims, after he cut their hair while they were sleeping.Ryan Hallimond, of Cedar Grove, received a message from a former girlfriend on 8th May last year inviting him to her home, however Hallimond had replied stating he couldn’t get there. The woman later fell asleep on the sofa, while her friend had already gone upstairs to bed.One of the women, the householder in Holly Hill, woke at around 4.30am to find the 22-year-old standing above her with a pair of scissors in one hand and holding her hair in the other. Deborah Smith, prosecut-ing, told Durham Crown Court: “She could feel him pulling on it and asked what he was doing and how he got in.”
She went on to explain how the woman saw a clump of her hair on the floor before Hallimond told her she should see her friend upstairs, who was “a lot worse”.She then rushed upstairs and woke her friend, who discovered her hair had also been cut.Hallimond had previ-ously denied two counts of assault causing actual bodily harm, but changed his plea to guilty on the day of trial.Judge Simon Hickey, sen-tencing Hallimond, stated there was an element of degredation about his be-haviour. He imposed a 21 month prison sentence, suspended for 12 months, during which Hallimond must undergo 20 days re-habilitation work with the probabtion service. He was also ordered to pay a combined total of £1,000 in compensation and imposed a 15 year restraining order.

Dear Editor,
I am amazed and somewhat apalled by Durham County Council’s ideas on how to go about saving money by reducing the number of street lights on our local roads here in the south of the county - I wonder if they are contemplating using this method further north? But I digress.
To remove fifty lighting columns is surely going to cost several thou-sands of pounds in labour, not to mention the cost of temporary traffic lights, disruption to traffic and the safe disposal of said columns. It will cost a huge amount again when they all have to be re-instated in a few years time owing to the upsurge in road traffic accidents during rush hours and bad weather, and to even more over-stretching of the Police Force, local hospitals and ambulance service when dealing with said accidents.
I live on a bus route, near several small industrial estates, so our road sees its fair share of heavy vehicles. We also have a new housing estate very nearby, and the entrance to the main car park for Locomotion Museum is at the bottom of the road. Police cars and ambulances use the road as a direct shortcut to Middridge and Newton Aycliffe. Altogether quite a busy road.
However, after about 8pm the road becomes very quiet and in the wee small hours when I’m roaming the house (OAPs often don’t sleep too well) it is absolutely deserted.
Instead of Durham County Council removing lights completely, could they not distinguish the ones that NEED to stay on all night (outside hospitals and police stations, main roads and pedestrian precincts, etc) then turn off all the others, say from midnight to 5am? If this strategy was rolled out county wide, what a saving in electricity costs it would be, not to mention light pollution. What an example to the rest of the country on how to save energy and precious resources!
J.M.Warner.Dale Road, Shildon
PS Malvern’s historic gas street lighting group has used this system to make substantial savings in costs, and would only be too glad to help with advice if needed.

Ken Loach’s award-winning film will be screened at St John’s Churh Hall on Saturday, 21st January from 6pm.
Screening of I, Daniel Blake
Shildon and Dene Valley Labour Party, with the support of Saint John’s Church, are to host a screening of the award-winning Ken Loach film, I, Daniel Blake.Entry to the screening will be free of charge in St John’s Church Hall on Saturday 21st January from 6pm. Tickets are limited to 60 so must be booked in advance by calling 07867 411287. The film centres around skilled craftsman, Daniel Blake, 59, who loses his job after suffering a heart
attack. He has assets, but not the kind that the market rates highly since they have little monetary value: qualities such as integrity, honesty and compassion. Winner of the Palme d’Or at Cannes when it premiered last year, Blake’s attrib-utes carry little weight in a system designed to pitch one human being against another in a time of aus-terity.Monetary or food dona-tions towards the cost of the screening and room hire will be donated to St John’s Church food bank.

Mayor of Shildon, Cllr Trish Pemberton, went along to watch the fantastic show.
Skaters put on a technicolour dream show
Spectrum North East Roller Skating Club performed family favourite Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat on Sunday 15th January at Shildon Sunny-dale Leisure Centre. The cast of 16 roller skaters (aged from just 5 right up to adults), are Tracy Stevens, Karen Austin, Jo Loring, Nicola Stevens, Sharday Smith, Joseph Kearney (15), Niamh Dawson (11), Benjamin Smithies (11), Hannah Godwin (10), Lucy Richardson (10), Harrison Austin (9), Indie May Clark (9), Jazzmyn Loring (7), Fearne Abbott (7) Heidi Turner (7) and Joel Turner (5). They have been busy
rehearsing since October in order to fundraise to help the club achieve their dreams of attending national competitions this year, and have managed to raise £205.65.The show opened with the Narrator (Tracy Stevens – coach and founder of the club) finding a book and starting to read the story of a young dreamer, named Joseph (Hannah Godwin from Coundon). Hannah started roller skating less than two years ago when she went along to lessons at Spectrum Leisure in Willington as a complete beginner. The club itself has been running less than three years but already has es-tablished regular lessons at two venues and is affiliated to the national govern-ing body of roller skating, competing at three com-petitions, where this year Hannah won a bronze medal. The show is a mixture of artistic skating moves and theatrical acting with lots
of enthusiasm and fun.Tracy Stevens, skating coach and daughter Nicola Stevens - choreographer, came up with the idea of combining their two passions of skating and theatre and have spent months rehearsing with the skaters. Pharoh, played by Jazzmyn Loring (7) from Oakenshaw can certainly entertain a crowd and is one of the most experienced skaters in the group as she started on wheels at just four years-old!Tracy commented: “Thank you to everyone who helps our club develop. Mayor Trish Pemberton attended the show. We would like to thank her for the continu-ous support for our club and thank you also to Sun-nydale Leisure Centre staff for their cooperation. “Bring your roller skates along to Sunnydale Leisure Centre on Sundays from 2.30-3.30pm, or Spectrum Leisure, Willington on Wednesdays from, 4.30-5.30pm. Sessions cost £4.”

The 30-year-old pleaded guilty to a charge of common assault and to
criminal damage to an internal door but not guilty to damaging a BMW X1 vehicle belonging to the North East Ambulance Service. Shildon AFC look for positive reaction to get back on track
Shildon AFC management will be looking for a positive reaction from their players this week after the disap-pointment of their FA Vase exit was quickly followed by the shock result of the Northern League so far this season when the Rail-waymen’s title aspirations were dented by Chester le Street. The bottom of the table side came from behind against the defending champions to claim their first home win of the season.Shildon remain third in the league table, but a win against the lowly league newcomers would have seen them come within four points of South Shields, with a game in hand, and still with the league’s big spenders to play in February. The shock result has removed the task of re-taining the league title from Shildon’s own hands, although a more positive spin on it may be that it will focus minds on the task ahead.Shildon remain in title con-tention, albeit the climb
to the mountaintop has steepened sharply. They also remain active in both domestic - as opposed to FA-related - cups, with a midweek League Cup Third Round tie against Whitley Bay scheduled to take place at Dean Street as the Crier goes to press. The added incentive of defending the trophy - cur-rently on display alongside the league championship trophy and other memo-rabilia at Locomotion: The National Railway Museum at Shildon - should ensure any lingering disappoit-ments are swept aside. The side will also be the bookie’s favourites to progress to the semi-finals of the Durham Challenge Cup after drawing second division side, Billingham Synthonia at Dean Street in the last eight of the com-petition.That match is scheduled to take place on the evening
of Wednesday 1st February.Between the two cup ties comes the opportunity to get back on track in the title race, although that will require wins on the road against lower mid-table sides, Sunderland RCA and Ashington respec-tively.The visit to RCA takes place on Saturday 21st January, followed a week later by the trip to Ashington.Perhaps the strongest indicator that the players remain incentivised in the title battle will come with the visit of Morpeth Town - themselves smarting from their controversial FA Vase exit at the hands of South Shields - to Dean Street on 4th February.Although any loss of league points before that date will almost certainly leave the two cups as the club’s only hope of polishing some sil-verware at the end of this season.
