Agudas Israel has formed a PANDEMIC TASK FORCE to set the best protocols to keep our congregation safe during this COVID-19 pandemic. We will continuously define the metrics

and create a timeline for the safe full re-opening of our building and operations. Your safety and health are our prime objectives.

The goals of the task force are:•Make informed decisions from information

obtained from the CDC and Governor’s office•Share with the congregation how decisions were

made•Reduce the ambiguity as to how and when we

    gather•Determine best practice for gathering

The inside of our building will remain closed until November 1, pending a re-evaluation in mid-October, based on any updated science, a possible second wave of outbreak, or an available vaccine. It has been proven that gatherings in closed spaces are one of the biggest culprits of virus spreading. Singing and talking loudly further maximizes the risk.

The office will remain open for business needs only, Tuesday through Friday (beginning July i). Please call to make an appointment.

Outside gatherings on our property with NO building entry will be limited to less than 25 people. Bathrooms, kitchen, and water fountain are off limits.

It’s now July 2020, and we’ve made it half way and that feels like some sort of achievement. As you are aware by now, we have established a Pandemic Task Force. We have collectively made the necessary and difficult decision to keep our building closed for non-business needs until at least November 1st (pending reevaluation

in mid-October). Not being physically close to our community has been challenging for us all, myself included. The summer months have previously been full of activities in our synagogue. I feel this palpable lack and deep longing.

We have spent about three months pining and lamenting what cannot be. We have moved a few things virtual—namely Lunch n Learn, Torah Study, and recordings of Friday Shabbat Services, plus the usual committee meetings. There are a few activities which are much harder to do online such as Canasta and Mah Jongg. There are others which take a bit of creativity but can be done.

And so we have a choice. We can continue to mourn what is not possible. Or we can take this time as an opportunity to reengage with one another in novel ways. Rabbi’s column - continued from page one

The following protocols for gatherings on the Synagogue property must be followed:

    • Date and time reservations for the space must be made through the office

•Participants must provide their own chairs•Food must be brought in for yourself or individual-

ly wrapped in single servings for each participant•All trash must be carried out •Masks are required when not eating•Social distancing must be followed – minimum

of 6 feet apart (areas will be marked with tape or flags to indicate the 6 ft distance)

    • If you are not feeling well, or have been with someone who has COVID-19, please stay home

•Bring your own hand sanitizers or wipes and use often

•Bathrooms will be closed.•Limit your gatherings to no more than one hour

or less. Even outdoors, prolonged person-to-person interactions are dangerous.

•No handshakes, hugs, or fist bumps are allowed

Note that Rabbi Jackson, the Board, and Chair people are trying to make every possible opportunity available to you so that you may continue to enjoy Shabbat and High Holy Day virtual services, as well as weekly zoom meetings. Please let us know any ideas you may have for additional social gatherings.

    How Exactly Do You Catch

    Covid-19?

have havdallah every week with someone else, have at it! The possibilities are endless.

One of the great benefits to having a relatively small synagogue population is that we run on volunteers—programs included. There is minimal “red-tape” to get through to do what you want with our community. You be the lead and we’ll help orchestrate the logistics.

We can use this time to break out of our routines and be a community, no matter if we are in the building or not. And then, when we do come back together in full, we will be stronger for all the connections that have been made in this time apart.

Finally, I and our Ritual committee are taking this advice to break out of routines to figure out how we can have meaningful, connective, communal, and virtual High Holy Days together. Consider this an invitation for input as we are putting everything together. As we get more details, we will be sure to keep everyone updated and involved.

Together, let’s see what the community of Agudas Israel can do!

With blessings and prayers for health,

    Rabbi Jackson

    Chai Hopes Campaign

In case you missed our June asking, it is not too late to respond to our Chai Hopes Campaign. We express our gratitude to those who have made generous donations.During this unprecedented period, Agudas Israel has managed to be active and present in your life. Our dedicated Rabbi has ensured that we are here for you to provide spiritual, educational, and social opportunities to benefit all of us.While sheltering at home, many people have attended our Zoom Lunch ‘n Learn and Torah Study and you have been watching the pre-recorded Friday night Shabbat services. We have also celebrated the end of Shabbat with a Zoom Havdalah service. We are encouraged by how many of you have been attending these meaningful gatherings and hope your needs for spiritual and community connections are being fulfilled. The financial effects of this virus are widespread, and Agudas Israel is not immune from it. We are experiencing much of the same. We have had to cancel many fundraising activities and donations have ground to a halt. Sources of revenue that support our congregation, operating costs, and building repairs have also been affected. We have created an opportunity that we are calling “Chai Hopes” to help our budget shortfall. We are asking our members to make a monthly pledge “Chai” ($18 or multiples thereof). This small monthly amount repeated over the course of a year can make a big impact on our ability to continue to fulfill our mission. If you are able, please make a donation to Agudas Israel to help sustain us during this difficult time. See tear-off coupon below or visit our website www.agudasisraelsynagogue.org to donate on-line by credit card.Support our warm house of Jewish tradition, our open and inclusive spiritual community, as we strive to strengthen ourselves, each other, and the community as a whole — not just during this challenging period, but for the brighter days ahead. If you are in need of support, feel free to contact Rabbi Jackson. Stay well and safe.

I wanted to take a moment to introduce myself to all of you, since I now am your vice president. Originally I am from New Jersey. I moved here in 1997 and never looked back. I have a daughter, Sophie, who became a bat mitzvah here at Agudas Israel. She will be a senior at Hendersonville High School this coming school year. I am a practicing attorney with an office in downtown Hendersonville. I have been serving as a trustee for the synagogue for the past two years. Before that, I served on the long range planning committee. As you all know, we are facing some unique and trying times because of the Corona virus and the many restrictions it has placed upon us. We are acutely aware that our congregation falls mostly in the high risk category, which has made us very cautious in relaxing any of these restrictions. As your vice president, I want to be responsive to the needs and wants of the congregation while balancing the very real health concerns that face us every day. I encourage all of you to reach out to me with questions, comments or requests. I will do my very best to meet those needs in the coming year.

    Richard [email protected]

Y Y YAs a note of introduction as a new vice president for Agudas Israel Congregation, I, as a native of Hendersonville with my family, have been members of this synagogue since 1928 when my grandfather opened his business, Louis Williams and Sons. I have earned my livelihood working in various areas of media. I started working in local radio, advanced to television news broadcasting and continued to advance by working in audio for corporate, commercial and theatrical motion picture productions. Susan and I will celebrate our fortieth wedding anniversary this July. We met here in Hendersonville while working in a local community theater. I have one daughter, Rebekah, four grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.I have served on the Board of Trustees for the past three years as a trustee and on the Ritual Committee for the past two years. My responsibilities revolved around upgrading and maintaining the sound system. Currently, David Monoson and I are nearing completion of installing a state-of-the-art security system. As you realize, we are facing challenges caused by the pandemic. While some religious institutions have opted to open, we at Agudas are a taking a very cautious approach regarding opening our facility. It is my hope that you, the members of Agudas Israel Congregation, will reach out to me, Richard or Rabbi Jackson with any questions or concerns.

    From The Board Room

We expressed our sincere thanks to the outgoing Board for the many hours they have spent working on our programs and special events, as well as running the every day business side of Agudas Israel. We now welcome the new Board and offer them our support going forward.

We have developed a Pandemic Task Force and they will determine the protocol for reopening our building and the necessary precautions that we will take to keep our congregational family safe and healthy.

The Agudas Israel office will be closed on Mondays to all congregants and visitors, beginning July first. This is an effort to cut costs. The Rabbi’s day off has always been on Mondays.

We thank all of our donors who have supported the Chai Hopes Campaign. See our Chai Hopes Campaign on page 3 to help sustain our synagogue.

Annual commitment forms have been sent out to all congregants. Please complete them and return to the office as soon as possible.

A message from our Sisterhood Vice President - Karen Jarmon

So, What’s New?Updates from your Sisterhood

July marks new beginnings for your Sisterhood. We are thrilled to welcome our new and returning members. We are eagerly awaiting the time when we can gather and again enjoy the camaraderie of our Sisterhood friends.

Part of our new beginnings are changes in the Board of Trustees and how we will operate. It is a pleasure to introduce our newly elected officers: Karen Jarmon, vice president; Joan Kershner, vice president; Sue Kopel, treasurer; Lynn Lewis, recording secretary; and Marlene Wiener, membership secretary. The new board also includes Karen Murray, immediate past president, and four trustees – Rebecca Burns, Barbara Gittleman, Vicky Lieber, and Natalie Zitnick. Together, we look forward to continuing the traditions of Sisterhood and exploring new ways to support each other and Agudas Israel during the next two years.

Starting in July, the board operational structure will shift to a leadership by committee format. With this change, our officers will share in assuming the executive, administrative and communications duties previously handled by the president.

As we welcome our new board, we extend our heartfelt appreciation to our outgoing board members, Sue Kaplan, Toby Linder, and Susan Williams, for their dedication and major contributions over the last two years. Thank you!

Mayor Barbara Volk has agreed to speak with our community as part of our Shabbat Speaker Series. We usually have time for each speaker to give a presentation and then some time for questions from us. We are still going to keep that structure. However, this time we will ask for the questions in advance so that Rabbi Jackson may ask them of her. This will then be part of a service in July in lieu of a sermon, as has been our custom. Please email Rabbi Jackson [[email protected]] with questions you would like Mayor Volk to address. Send questions by July 8.

It’s summer! I am sitting in a beautiful forest in Virginia, with the sun teasing through the trees after two days of gentle rain. It’s really pretty! Sounds like a normal summer ritual, right? Camping, hiking, cooking out......with hand sanitizer in my pocket and an N95 mask around my neck. Not at all like a normal summer ritual. Now, spring, that was filled with normal rituals. Going to nurseries and Lowe’s to buy flowers for planting and mulch for the beds, herbs to grow in a container garden. Standing just inside the doorway, six feet from the next person, masked and gloved like a character on General Hospital. Totally normal! The ritual of spring flower shows and summer festivals this year have become marches across America, calling for the normal, the familiar, the rituals of life in America to be shared equally. Rituals of comfort, of happiness, of safety, of giving and receiving, should be everyday for every American, with liberty and justice for all. And they will be, because this is not new to America, nor is it new to the Jewish people, for whom hope has always been a light in the darkness. Here’s hoping that when we find our way out of this time of grief, fear, and quarantine, we will all be able to share in the rituals of our best lives. Without the corona virus and without all the hand sanitizer.

    -- Cya Ashley, Committee Chair

On February 23, 2020, a proposal was introduced at our meeting that we would have our two Vice Presidnets serve as co-chairs for 2020/2021. Both Ray Wiener and Allen Rosen will serve as Vice Presidents, Neil Sutker as Secretary, and Alan Cooper will serve as Treasurer.Unfortunately, due to the COVID-19 virus we were forced to suspend our activities, shelter in place at our homes, and adhere to Public Health Protocols. We are looking for help to keep the Brotherhood a productive group. We are planning our Veteran’s Day Service in November, if conditions allow. We need people to participate in the planning of events. Please contact Ray. We want to thank Allen Rosen for taking it upon himself to place American Flags on the graves of Veterans in our cemetery. We feel that going forward with this leadership concept creates new interest, and robust energy to our vision for next year, and we all hope that our activities resume sooner rather than later.Allen has held several leadership rolls, member Ritual Committee, Trustee on AIC Board, and VP of Building and Grounds. In addition he has participated in many fundraising activities. Ray Wiener has been president of the Brotherhood in years past. The Brotherhood has provided a tremendous amount of support to Agudas Israel, and we hope to continue for years to come. You can reach the new Brotherhood Vice Presidents at: Ray: 828-808-1175 or [email protected] andAllen: 828-595-1497 or [email protected] you all stay well, healthy and safe.

    Our Condolences

    SHIRLEY YOUNGER

It is with great sorrow that we notify you of the passing of our long time member, Shirley Younger, on June 2, 2020, just 10 days short of her 94th birthday.

Shirley is survived by three loving sons: Bruce, Jeffrey and Larry, grandchildren: Rachel, Elijah, Hannah, Zachary, and Samantha, a great grandson Earl, sister Joan and sister-in-law Eileen Lieberman, as well as several nieces, nephews and many close and dear friends.

Shirley always had a kind smile and a kind word for everyone who would sit down to speak with her. She cared about people and especially her friends at Agudas Israel. Whenever Rabbi Jackson would ask for a volunteer to light the Shabbat candles at Lake Pointe Landing, Shirley would volunteer.

Shirley will be missed. May her memory be for a blessing. Z’ichronon l’vracha.

    EMERGENCY CONTACT FORM

If you have not yet done so, please complete and return the Emergency Contact Form that you received. If you do not have one,

please call the office. Many contacts/phone numbers have changed and we need your updated information.

Email or mail to the office. Thank you.In this day and age you can never be too cautious. Here are two items we bring to your attention:

    1) If you receive an email from Rabbi Jackson requesting gift cards or money - DO NOT REPLY - it is a scam.2) If you receive a phone call from someone claiming to be with Social Security who wants your personal information - HANG UP - The Social Security office will only contact you by mail.

    1) Cannabis is looking at being decriminalized, both for medicinal and recreational use, and if the laws are passed, it would join only a handful of other countries in the world.

    2) Coronavirus is under control, with a total of about 22,000 cases and less than 310 deaths.

    3) Tour companies are having hour long or even several day-long excursions around Israel—from your living room. If you have never been, or want to see again, this could be a good opportunity. JNF link:www.jnf.org/travel-pages/jnf-virtual-tours-to-israel. Several different guided videos: www.travelandleisure.com/trip-ideas/israel-virtual-tours.Or the Israel Museum in Jerusalem is offering tours: www.imj.org.il/en/events/museum-closed-come.

    4) Scholarship continues to happen, such as finding the DNA of the animals used for the parchment for the Dead Sea Scrolls. A recent discovery showed that sheep skin was used, and this could be in the same location as the Qumran caves themselves. Cow hide was also used, but that could not have been local to the desert area. The mystery is slowly pieced together and continues to grow.
