RABBI’S MESSAGE Rabbi Rachael Jackson
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE January is coming to a close and, although the winter
is supposed to be our “quiet time”, we have been
busy. We had a beautiful Shabbat service conducted
by the Brotherhood followed by a special oneg spon-
sored by Natalie Zitnick in memory of her late hus-
(Continued page 2)
Once every four years we have the gift of
an extra day—February 29. In reality, how-
ever, we are making up for lost time. Time
which has already gone by, but we did not
notice. After four years, our calendar catches
up with the earthly rotations.
In our Jewish calendar, day and months are
much more complicated. Simplistically, seven out of
every nineteen years has an entire extra month,
called Adar I. This month, in 2016, happens in Feb-
ruary and March. This addition pushes back Purim
and Passover—though the length between those two
holidays remains the same. So we will not celebrate
Passover until April 22.
This begs the question then, what are we supposed
to do with a whole month? A month with no holi-
days of its own. A month with no special Shabbatot.
A month which just is.
I would like to offer up that we use this month as
one of spiritual rejuvenation. During the month of
Elul, just before Rosh Hashanah, we do the spiritual
hard work—looking deep into ourselves and seeking
understanding and forgiveness from others, from
ourselves, from God. It’s hard work!
And during the month of Nissan (this year in
April), we think about redemption as it pertains to
the Exodus. We think about the plagues as they were
and as they are—more about this in a couple months.
We think about tradition and our place in it, which
often leads us to think about the future and our place
in it. Redemption is hard work!
This month, Adar 1, I think we need to fo-
cus on taking care of spiritual sides. Not an
intensive workout at the gym, but more of a
relaxing spa day. For some of us, going to the
spa means getting a massage. Easing away the
tensions brought on by everyday aches and
pains. For others, it means a manicure/pedicure.
Beautifying that which we have been given. There are
those who see a spa day as time to connect, or re-
connect, with friends in an unhurried fashion.
What could a spa day for your soul look like? Ask
yourself what it could be like to take time to honor
and cherish your spiritual side. How refreshed could
you be in a deep and meaningful way? Perhaps you
would want to scrub away some of the grime that has
built up from resentment carried too long. Or, maybe
for you, sitting and meditating over the glory and
beauty that surrounds us will fill you with child-like
awe and wonder once more. However you find a way
to rejuvenate your spiritual side is right.
Let us take this gift of time and spend it on spiritual
awareness. Not hard work. And not pushed aside.
Rather, time to care for that side of us which is so
personal, so intimate, and so profoundly beautiful. I
wish for each of us time to care for ourselves. May
we each take time to do so.
Warmly and with blessings for a rejuvenating month,
Rabbi Rachael Jackson
band Stan Zitnick. For the first time, Agudas Israel
participated in the MLK Day On, an interfaith day of
service commemorating the civil rights leader and
movement. Rabbi Jackson was a visible participant
in the program. A small but committed group of
Agudas Israel members volunteered at agencies

BROTHERHOOD REPORT
Brotherhood had a surprisingly strong turnout at
the December 20th meeting, considering it being the
slow winter season, with many members away in
sunny Florida.
Following up on a request by the Caring and Mem-
bership chairs at our last AI BOD meeting, Brother-
hood was able to organize volunteers to drive con-
gregants who need transportation to and from ser-
vices. So if anyone needs a ride to services,
please contact the Caring Committee or Member-
ship committee who will organize for someone
from Brotherhood to help transport you to the
synagogue.
Brotherhood is also considering to form a task
force of volunteers that can be called upon to per-
form minor repairs in the homes of congregants who
are unable to do them themselves. Contact for this
committee is Larry Kosowsky. Please see separate
announcement appearing in this issue of Chai Lites.
We are continuing to provide volunteers to monitor
the entrance to our congregation during services so
as to ensure the safety and comfort of members.
Shabbat Services, were successfully carried out by
Brotherhood as planned on Friday, January 15th. Al-
though we had some inclement weather to deal with,
which prevented some of our congregants from at-
tending, we had a great turnout. My personal thanks
AGUDAS ISRAEL SISTERHOOD
Notes from Nat After December and all of the attending Chanukah
celebrations, January seemed very quiet.
We were happy to help with the arrangements for the
January 25th, Tu B'Shevat Seder at Rabbi Jackson's
request.
The nominating committee for new members of the
Sisterhood Board is off and running. If there are any
women in the congregation who would like to join
our board, and by the way, meet and work with some
very exceptional ladies, please let me know, or con-
tact Sherry Harris, Chairman of the nominating com-
mittee at [email protected].
The next Sisterhood general meeting will be held
February 15th, noon. This will be a meeting about
beading. Our own Diane Stricker will help you with
any problems you have with beads that you own, or
to everyone who participated in the assigned readings
from the Mishkan Tfilah, as well as special thanks to
Nancy Silver for her cantorial accompaniment, and to
Joe Kaplan for leading the entire services. Also spe-
cial thanks to Arthur Lebowitz for his inspirational
D’Var Torah, and Danyul Jackson for leading us in
singing of Shalom Rav, and Oseh Shalom. The
Shabbat Services were topped off by a beautiful
Oneg sponsored by Natalie Zitnick.. All in all it was
a great experience, with wonderful camaraderie that
was enjoyed by everyone. What a wonderful way to
welcome Shabbat.
On January 18th, the Brotherhood Camera Club will
be providing volunteer photographers to take some
pictures of the MLK Day meeting at the St. James
Church which will be followed by community volun-
teer work.
Mountain Jewish Festival is coming up fast, and
Sisterhood is already making plans to bake all sorts
of goodies for this event.. We at Brotherhood have
been entrusted with frying up latkes again for this
year’s festival. It seems that last year we did not have
enough latkes to go around, so this time we need to
triple the amount of latkes. Ed Lieber will be in
charge of the Latke Brigade again, so please contact
him if you would like to participate.
Additional activities are being planned by your
Brotherhood Board so stay tuned for further an-
nouncements. Michael Thorz, President
Agudas Israel Brotherhood
around the community. It seems so “right” that we,
as a congregation are part of this project. There is a
strong history of Jewish engagement in the civil
rights movement so our continuing presence in pro-
grams such as these seems natural and appropriate.
The plan is for this program to be ongoing so per-
haps next year we will see a larger corps of volun-
teers. Finally, this year we will have our first Tu
Bish’vat Seder at Agudas Israel. Tu BiSh’vat is the
New Year of the Trees and it has become the custom
to eat fruits and nuts, particularly those that are
abundant in Israel. The ritual of a seder began in the
16th century and provides an opportunity for us to
gather together and remind ourselves that “…we
spend our lives planting seeds. Time and effort are
needed for our efforts to bear fruit. Wait patiently.
One day, like the seed, we will be blessed.” (Belz,
2015).
Shalom.

FEED THE KIDS COALITION
Feed the Kids Coalition of Hender-
son County is in need of a handful
of volunteers. We need volunteers
who will serve meals to the kids at
the Boys and Girls Club once every
six weeks. As you can see it is not much time on
your part. Give us a few hours of your time every
once in a while. You’ll love it! Please contact Irv
Kershner at: [email protected] or call him at

Carl Sandburg wrote “Valor is a gift; those having it
never know for sure whether they have it until the test
comes.”
On the 3rd of February, 1943 the USAT (United States
Army Transport) Dorchester, a converted cruise ship,
was pressed into service during WW II, and was 150
miles from the coast of Greenland, to deliver 902 Army
personnel, Merchant Marine, and civilian contractors.
The North Atlantic was stormy. Swells of ice cold wa-
ter intermittently washed across the deck of the ship;
freezing temperatures and gale force winds caused the
exterior of the ship to freeze, causing huge barnacles of
ice.
The Captain ordered the men to sleep in their uni-
forms. Many men disregarded the order because the
sleeping areas were adjacent to the huge boiler room
which emanated a great amount of heat. The real reason
for this order from the Captain was that German subma-
rines had been spotted by the Dorchester’s escort, three
Coast Guard cutters. This part of the North Atlantic was
called “torpedo alley.”
In the early morning hours a German submarine, U-
233, released two torpedos. The Dorchester was hit
starboard side, and immediately began to list. The sea
would devour the vessel in 27 minutes. In less than one-
half hour four Army Chaplains; two Protestant pastors, a
Catholic priest, and a Jewish Rabbi would commit the
ultimate act of interfaith for God and country, and came
to be known from then on as the “Immortal Chaplains.”
Rev. George Fox (Methodist), Alexander Goode
(Rabbi), Clarke Poling (Dutch Reformist Minister), and
John Washington (Roman Catholic Priest). All four
men attended Chaplain School together. And by an odd
twist of fate, embarked on the Dorchester which began
its last journey from Staten Island, New York on Janu-
ary 22, 1943.
With their trip to Greenland in its final stages, they
continued to stay busy, ministering to the needs of the
soldiers, and holding interfaith services. When the tor-

pedo hit the ship, bedlam ensued below deck. The
lights were going out, and panic quickly set in. The
Chaplains restored order as the men got dressed and
were made ready to muster on the top deck. Once
on the deck of the ship, the Chaplains handed out
lifejackets, all the while encouraging the soldiers to
have faith.
Rabbi Goode encountered Petty Officer John J.
Mahoney, who attempted to re-enter his cabin.
Rabbi Goode stopped him and Mahoney said he
wanted to get his gloves. “Never mind” Goode
said, “I have two pairs,” and Goode gave his gloves
to Mahoney. In retrospect, Mahoney realized later
that the Rabbi had decided not to leave the Dorches-
ter.
On the deck of the ship the Chaplains continued to
spirit their congregation, and hand out the remaining
lifejackets. Soon the storage cabinet was empty,
and four soldiers remained without jackets. At that
time the Chaplains removed their jackets and placed
them on the soldiers. The reaction to this gift was a
bewildered but grateful gift of heroism.
Survivors of the ship reported seeing the Chap-
lains on the deck of the ship with arms linked and
offering prayers for the safety of the men. The Dor-
chester finally breathed its last, and slipped beneath
the waves. There were only 230 survivors. The
Chaplains seemed to initiate an active interfaith
ministry, realizing that in a world where differences
have often created conflict, these men found a spe-
cial kinship. They were brothers because all four
shared and prayed to the same God, and they made
God very proud.
In 2011, the American Legion and the Sons of the
American Legion, helped correct an omission at Ar-
lington National Cemetery by dedicating a plaque
honoring Jewish chaplains, and in the month of Feb-
ruary , a special interfaith service is conducted by
local clergy and the American Legion to give further
recognition for the Chaplains Supreme Sacrifice.

A Helping Hand From the Brotherhood
Many of our congregants may not be able to repair small items that need to be fixed. Change a light bulb, install a new set of phones, undo a stuck drawer or window, change a filter and similar tasks. Brotherhood now has a team of members that are here to help. We should be able to make most of these small repairs and obviously there is no charge.
Call Larry Kosowsky at 891-8179 or Bart Bohnen at 692-3333 and they will arrange to have a team member contact you.

Sisterhood would like to thank you for your past participation in our Sisterhood Gift Card
Program. You have made a significant impact on our Temple becoming an even better place for
us to congregate and worship through the following two ways:
Rebates from the gift cards you purchase
Donations you have made for special projects such as the Kitchen Renovation Fund and the Sanctuary
Beautification Fund.
2013/2014: We renovated the Agudas kitchen with the funds from these two areas.
2015: We engaged a fiber artist to create our unique, beautiful Ark curtain and Bimah cover.
We most recently purchased 6 new matching chairs and 4 matching tables to go next to
the new chairs.
NOW ANNOUNCING: Sisterhood is changing the name (but not the methods) of our new 2016 fundrais-
ing to the SISTERHOOD BUILDING BEAUTIFICATION FUND. We are now expanding our efforts to
include ALL areas of the Agudas Israel building.
We are accepting suggestions for more ways to beautify our wonderful synagogue. Please
note, this does not include repairs or maintenance, as the congregation has a fund for that.
Please contact Carol with your suggestions. [email protected]
Thank you again for your past support! Carol Leaman, Sisterhood V.P for Fundraising
We need some help in our synagogue office. We need volunteers to sign up for one day a week to assist Susan LaRue in the office with doing some work such as answering the phones,
help with mailings, photocopying, paperwork, etc. Susan would be most appreciative of everyone’s effort in giving her a “hand.” Thank you very much.

Notes From
The Lark’s Nest
Have you ever wondered about the ori-
gin of our name - LARKS?
The letters are an acronym for LADIES
AUXILIARY READING KLUB. In years past our Sis-
terhood was known as the Ladies Auxiliary, hence the
name. Currently, we are a group of devoted readers of
books with Jewish content. We meet every other month
on the fourth Wednesday at 4P.M. Our discussions are
spirited and fun. We recently met to choose our books
for 2016 and this year, in particular, the choices are very
fine. We are looking forward to reading all of them.
In 2016, we will meet for the first time on Wednes-
day, February 24th at 4. Our selection is THE GOLEM
AND THE JINNI by Helene Wecker.
Imagine a fascinating tale about a golem, a creature
made of clay and a jinni, a being of fire, who become
friends. Described as “marvelous and compulsively
readable” this is an inventive story weaving historical
fiction with a magical fable. A different book to be sure.
Our selections for 2016 are:
The Golem and the Jinni by Helene Wecker
The Devil in Jerusalem by Naomi Ragen
The Muralist by B.A. Shapiro
All I Love and Know by Judith Frank
The Marriage of Opposites by Alice Hoffman
Notorious RBG The life and Times of Ruth Bader
