School Car Parks

Thanks to all those parents using the Tangadee

Road and Arizona Parade car parks. For safety

reasons I allocated the car park at the front of the

school on Thundelarra Drive as a ‘Staff Only’ car

park. A number of families cross the car park drive

area at the start and finish of school.

I respectfully ask that parents not use this car park

unless they have a child with a disability requiring

close parking.

YEAR 6 STUDY TOUR CAMP Our Year 6 students are left for their Canberra Study Tour on Sunday 30 August. They will return on Thursday 3 September. Stu-dents will be given the opportunity to participate in a variety of edu-cational programs with a focus on Australia’s history, culture, herit-age and democracy.

The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion the Australian Government is contributing funding of $240 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate Program towards those costs. The rebate is paid directly to the school upon completion of the excursion. This rebate has already ben deduct-ed from the total cost that parents were asked to pay for.

We are sure the students will make the most of this very exciting opportunity. They will experi-

ence some amazing places and learn so much about our national capital. We look forward to

hearing all about it on their return.

Safety House Visit

On the 4th of September our students will be attending a Safety House incursion in

the undercover area.

The show will present ways for children to identify and deal with difficult situations with strangers and other

Science Week

To celebrate National Science Week last week we had a paper plane challenge. Our keen

scientists considered the variables that would contribute to a successful flight, including design, throwing technique and speed. With very close elimination rounds, we were in no time down to our final five planes. Our winners, managed to combine all variables, and a bit of luck to ensure that they could take home the title of Paper Plane Champion! Congratulation’s Sugar our Champion and Jacob our runner up.

SCHOOL PHOTO DAY IS COMING!

Dear Parents,

Our school photo day is coming! Approximately two weeks prior to the photo day every student will re-ceive a Kapture Photography order envelope to bring home. The recommended method of ordering your photos is online through Kapture’s website as your payment is secure and can be easily verified at any time. Alternatively you can pay by cash or cheque and return the provided envelope to the school on the photography day. If you place your order online please DO NOT return your envelope to school.

Any parent who forgets or is unable to supply their envelope on the photo day will have five (5) days to complete an order online. Late payment envelopes cannot be accepted by the school office or by Kapture.

You also have the option to order a sibling photo package online, however please be aware there may be a limited number of sibling orders that can be placed due to time constraints on photo day. We suggest you place your online sibling order as early as possible to avoid disappointment.

Kapture offer a money back guarantee for any parent who is not fully satisfied with their photo package. Should you have any queries before or after photo day, please direct them to the Kapture office on

9240 1714 or email [email protected].

All students will be photographed individually on photo day for school administration records AS WELL as included in their class group photo available for purchase to all families. Should there be any reason why

your child should NOT be included in the photo shoot –please contact the school office.

Reading at Home

We don’t send home levelled readers at Golden Bay Primary School, we do however

encourage students to read, or be read to, each night. Kids will be more enthusiastic

about reading if they are reading books or magazines that interest them. Below are

some questions that you might ask your child when discussing what they are reading:

On the lines (right there question) – This is the simplest kind of question. The reader

finds the answer in the text.

What happened…?

Who…?

What is…?

Which…?

Between the lines (infer) – You could anticipate the ending and consequences, state

the reason for events and/or make generalisations.

Why did…?

What was…?

How was this similar to…?

Beyond the lines (on your own questions) – Make connections between the text and

your own experience and knowledge.

Do you think that … should have …?

What else could he/she/you….?

What would have happened if….?

If you were… what would you….?

Musical Costume Meeting, 17th of September 3:00pm

We are seeking fantastic people to help us make our school musical

costumes. Come meet with us on Thursday the 17th at 3:00pm to

see our plans and what we need. Any help is greatly appreciated!

SMS Communication

We are pleased to advise that Golden Bay Primary School has implemented a mobile phone messaging system

to communicate student unexplained absences to parents/guardians.

This new communication system uses Short Messaging Service (SMS) and will send text messages to parent/

guardian mobile phones when your child is absent from school (in the instance that an explanation has not al-

ready been provided).

Each morning of a school day, our computer system will automatically send parents a message similar to this if

an Unexplained Absence has been recorded:

Golden Bay PS records show Frank Smart is absent Mon 23/03/2015. Pls reply SMS or call 95838800 stu

name/reason/abs date

SMS is designed to advise parents that according to school records, the student is absent and no reason has

been provided to the school.

It is a legal requirement that parents contact the school regarding any student absences or reasons for late-

ness. If an explanation for the absence has been provided prior to 9.30am each morning, then parents will not

receive an SMS. Please note that there may be some circumstances out of our control, such as power outages,

where we cannot send SMS.

Parents need to be aware that this system is an additional absence follow up service only. There will be times

when parents may not receive a text message due to technical issues. In cases where you are concerned about

your child’s attendance, please contact the school directly on 9583 8800.

Once absence notification messages have been implemented, the use of SMS communications may be extend-

ed to wider uses such as unexpected school closures or a reminder about a school event.

It is expected that the use of SMS communication to parents will assist in reducing the number of unexplained

student absences and help inform the school and parents as to the whereabouts of every student. The SMS

strategy is already being used across many WA schools as a successful initiative to improve communication to

parents and to encourage student’s to take responsibility for their attendance at school.

Further enquiries should be directed to Kristy McGregor on 9583 8800.

Request for volunteers to sit on Attendance Advisory Panels

Regular attendance at school enables children to build on their knowledge and skills each day, each week and each year. If a child has persistent absences, they can miss out on basic skills and may experience difficulties later with their learn-ing. School helps children build confidence in areas such as communication, team-work, organization and social skills. Attending school is a legal requirement.

When a child’s absence is identified as a concern, school staff work with the stu-dent, parents, and the community to develop and implement strategies to engage the child back at school. In some cases, these strategies are unable to restore at-tendance.

An Attendance Advisory Panel is a group of people from outside the school who are brought together to provide advice and assistance to the family and school from an external point of view. They are designed to help restore a child’s attendance. Pan-els are a strategy schools can use to plan for a child who has persistent absences when many efforts by the school to restore attendance have failed.

Panel members are volunteers from the local community and we are requesting your support to help us. We need people to volunteer a few hours of their time to sit on an Attendance Advisory Panel to help other children and families in our com-munity.

We are requesting parents ask friends, relatives and contacts from local community groups to volunteer as panel members for our school. A parent cannot be on a pan-el for the same school where their child is enrolled as panels need to be external from the school. We are requesting parents to volunteer their time to sit on panels for other nearby schools.

If you are interested in assisting in advisory panels, please contact Golden Bay Pri-mary School on 95838800. You will be given an application form to complete and staff will organise for a short training session for you, prior to the panel meeting.

Kind regards,

Peta
