Dear Parents, FACTION POLO SHIRTS AND INTERSCHOOL SPORT BANNERS Now that we have established our faction names, we are in the process of organising our polo shirts with logos. I’ll keep you informed of our progress with the logo and banner development. Kristy will be sending out order forms for the faction Polo shirts before the end of term. Once students receive their faction polo shirts they will be able to be worn each Wednesday. This aligns with our senior sports day each week. BOTANY CLUB The Botany Club met with Craig and Diana from Coast Care on Thursday. Craig and Diana had an in depth discussion with students about regeneration of costal vegetation following recent bush fires in our area. Cultural use of fire by local Indigenous people was explored. Students were able to learn about how Indigenous people use fire for hunting, dispersal of seeds and ways that grassland is encouraged using controlled burning of vegetation. In times past this was important for creating a sustainable food supply throughout the year. POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR SUPPORT The Positive Behaviour Support team is currently working on the creation of lessons to accompany our behaviour matrix and agreements as well as developing a wide range of stimulating playground activities for students. New playground equipment has arrived for years one to four, and will be on display and in use within the next couple of weeks. READING AT HOME Congratulations to students who read at home every night. It is very important that children read each day to increase their fluency while building their capacity with comprehension. Students are able to borrow from the school library each week. Parents and students can also access the levelled books in the Reading at Home section of the library. Please have a look at the information on page four of this newsletter to guide you and your child with additional opportunities to become fluent with their reading. EASTER BREAK A friendly reminder that the school Easter break falls during the term this year. The Easter break commences on Friday 25 March and goes through until Tuesday 29 March (inclusive). Students return to school on Wednesday 30 March. What is Positive Behaviour Support?

Golden Bay Primary School is implementing Positive Behaviour Support with the purpose of sup-porting a safe, inclusive and positive learning environment. Positive Behaviour Support applies evidence-based approaches, practices and strategies for all students to increase academic per-formance, improve safety, decrease problem behaviour, and establish a positive school culture.

Positive Behaviour Support places a major focus on prevention and the following key elements help to create a safe, positive and productive learning environment:

• Clearly defined and taught behaviour expectations.

• Consistent and frequent acknowledgment of appropriate behaviour.

• Constructively and specifically addressing problem behaviour.

• Effective use of behaviour data to assess and inform decision making.

Positive Behaviour Support is a school wide strategy for helping all students’ achieve important social and learning goals. We know that when good behaviour and good teaching come together, our students will excel in their learning. As part of the Positive Behaviour Support process, we have three behaviour expectations. These are directly based on our school values of Excellence, Respect and Integrity.

Staff and students worked together to develop our whole school Behaviour Matrix. The Matrix lists behaviour agreements link to the behaviour expectations. Behaviour agreements have been developed for a variety of settings. The Matrix forms the basis for the teaching of expected be-haviours. A copy of the Behaviour Matrix is included with this newsletter. Our staff and students are very proud of all the work that went into developing this.

These expectations and agreements are explicitly taught to the students and we encourage them frequently with positive incentives and rewards for their great behaviour. The expectations are stated visually throughout our school. The signs on the external walls of the school buildings, along with posters in all learning areas, provide consistent and positive reminders for everyone.

You can ask your child questions like - What are the three school behaviour expectations? How do you follow these expectations? What happens when an adult in the school sees you following the expectations?

Positive Behaviour Support specifically addresses problem behaviours, supports a safe school environment and gives more time for instruction. By detailing expected behaviours and teaching these to students in a positive way, we are providing a common language for everyone at Golden Bay Primary School. We believe that by helping students practice and achieve good behaviour, we will build a school community where all students have an environment where they can feel safe, succeed and grow.

We will continue to inform you about our implementation of PBS throughout the year.
