What happens outside a shop’s door has an enormous impact on their business. What happens if people feel unsafe coming into the area? This is where the Sea Point SRA has stepped in ensuring that the streets within their geographical boundary remain clean and safe.

The Sea Point Business District was showing serious signs of urban degeneration until the Sea Point SRA was formed in 2002. The added value that the SRA brings to the area is both short and long term. While the current economic climate is a challenge, we believe that the SRA has contributed to once again bringing back the confidence of developers. Success is shown in concrete with the skyline dotted with cranes due to all the new developments taking place. Over R1 billion will be sunk into new developments in the next 2-3 years.

Sea Point is one of the most densely populated suburbs and is home to over 375 businesses who contribute financially to the SRA. The area boasts a mix of commercial and residential properties with a vibrant night life element. It is a well known tourist destination with the addition of tour busses passing through on a daily basis. Many foreigners and local investors see the area as a place of urban regeneration.The Sea Point SRA provides the mechanism to effect real change in the stated geographical area.

The SRA is managed by a Board of Directors consisting of local property owners. However the SRA is delivered by a small executive team who manage the day to day operations and strategic direction of the SRA. The management team focuses on the continuance of the goals set out.

Our core priority remains cutting crime. When the Sea Point SRA was first incorporated, crime and particularly drug offences, theft out of motor vehicle, business and normal robberies, as well as ATM Fraud was endemic. In partnerships with other Law Enforcement Agencies significant improvements were made with overall crime now being virtually non-existent along the SRA area.

To be able to maintain and increase competitiveness with neighbouring suburbs. Out of town developments create a “one stop shop” where everything is under one roof. Therefore the Sea Point SRA must continue to create an area that will be attractive to locals and visitors. 8 years ago Sea Point was not an attraction, as with the creation of shopping hubs elsewhere, such as the V & A Waterfront, potential clientele, as well as big name businesses were on the move. However, from 2013, we have slowly seen the larger chain stores moving into the area with the available and upgraded retail space made available. This proves that confidence is back within the area and that the area is once again economically viable.

WHY WE NEED AN SRA
