INTRODUCTION

Engineers are problem-solvers who want to make things

work more efficiently and quickly and less expensively.

Engineers apply the sciences of chemistry, physics and

mathematics to find suitable solutions to problems or to

make improvements to the status quo.

Today India is undergoing vast changes of landscape

outer ring road, Metro Rail, Big shopping malls,

destruction of buildings of road widening, cutting of big

trees, disappearance of hillocks, boulders for new roads

and for real estate

Disturbance/Destruction of ecosystem:

As we are developing towards industrialization there is in balance

of our ecosystem, loss of biodiversity disturbance/destruction and

pollution. Development should be there, but it should be

sustainable. We should hand over of planet earth to our new

generation as we have inherited from our forefather’s. Destruction

already started during our father’s time (last 30 years). There is

need restore/regenerate biodiversity, ecosystem and control

environmental pollution by scientific methods.

Proclain is the enemy No. 1 of biodiversity:

Destruction of Hills, for real-estate construction, Ring Roads, Big

trees (Eg: at the recent biodiversity conference 2012 at

Hyderabad) for the purpose parking!!! .Blanket rule- That

Proclains to be prohibited in urban planning. To be used sparingly

for Dams, Canals where it is un avoidable. Mechanical engineers

use engineering principles to provide efficient solutions to the

development of processes and products, ranging from small

component designs to extremely large plant, machinery or

vehicles. Mechanical engineers can also be involved in the

management of people and resources, as well as the development

and use of new materials and technologies.

Green technology/building/offices: Our new building and glass building

are not readily environmentally friendly. The concept of green building is not

mere solar electricity and large glass windows for ventilation. Marble flooring,

acyclic paints, theramocol their manufacture transport and installations etc.,

require high energy involving carbon dioxide emissions. Volatile organic

emissions (VOC) inside our houses due to solvents of paints, phthalates are

cancer causing. Any green technology or chemistry involves the whole

procedure either manufacturer or construction should be involved

environmentally friendly starting material and process. Improved stoves (Mud

stoves), should encourage for village peoples for low energy consumption. Glass

buildings trap more heat and glass closures consume more energy by way of

cooling rather than it allows light inside (green house effect). Glasshouses are

not suitable for tropical country like India.

Striving for a Green Future: Small yet smart decisions can

help save and conserve energy in a big way. When thinking of

going green wall paints in the home also count. It also

improves the health of the people living in the home. The air

quality is directly connected to the paint used because one

would breathe the VOC emissions. The benefits of using eco

friendly paints and stains help reduce breath risks like

headaches, respiratory disorders, lung problems, burning

sensation in the eyes nose and throat and so on. So, one

should maintain the indoor air quality at home, VOC (Volatile

Organic Content) free paints.

As we know water bodies are the main sources of the health the water bodies must be maintained properly.

For example the Hussain sagar(Hyderabad,AP) is a much visited place in the city but the people don’t know the polution caused by sagar.

Earlier sagar was surrounded by mudflats .These mud flats with thick grass, water levels of few centimeters, through which nalas flow, trap water into mud flats, slow down water flow, facilitate photochemical decomposition of wastes, which eventually sediment there itself. Thus the water filtered and then trickles down into sagar. Thus the autofiltered and somewhat purified water

But now due to development of buildings aroung sagar all the mudflats vanished and so water is not getting purified and wastes are getting deposited. More human activity in the vicinity means more pollution.

The governement should utilize the funds given for development of lakes and rivers properly and that these water bodies remain clean and unpolluted.

Electronic waste is another big polluter.Electronics engineer should assume low energy consumption material Ex; LCD to light emitting diode (LED) and plasma TV etc., Project work to devise methods for its disposable.

Some solution to mitigate the suffering of urban population are given are reduce the consumption of electricity. Close big malls shopping, TV shops all air condition and illuminations during day time, between 11.00 a.m. to 4.pm and 8.30 pm onwards. Close TV cable connection between 9.00 am to 4.00 pm and after 10 pm. Stop supplements to news papers on cinema advertisements and other topics some papers and electricity. Schools to work five days 9.00 am to 2.30 pm only. Sumer holidays for schools and hotels to be closed after 9.00 pm.

To relive urban congestion and automobile fuel emission:

develop radial roads to outer ring roads. These were not

developed so far. Develop bus depot/stations at radial

roads/outer ring roads intersections.

The Radial Road or RR are roads identified as the main

connecting roads between inner ring road and outer ring

road to provide better connectivity to city roads

It should also be seen that the state busses should use the

outer ring road effectively,ORR are not just only for Hi-tech

or Airport busses

Safety of the structure around metro train routes :

The metro rail construction is in active progress. They pass through on

congested routes on elevated route supported on pillars. In all the countries

metropolitan routes pass through underground in crowed localities, over

bridges in medium crowded localities and finally on surface where the

population and structures are sparsely/thinly located.

the governement should see that during the best route should be used for

construction of the metro so that minimum number of bulding are

destroyed,that is,constructing on a much elevated route.

. The trains run at a speed of 80-120 Km,it should be seen that these metro rails

maintain a distance from buildings to reduce the vibrations which are caused

while the train moves,if these are not followed then the foundation may become

weak, the instruments in the buildings suffer vibrations.

Electronic and plastic waste and ground water pollution in urban area: Not useful electronic, computer, all phone parts cause irreparable damage to the biodiversity and environment.

Lead, Cadmium and Mercury (it volatiles also) are the most dangerous toxic elements. Arsenic is found to be present in bore wells water drawn below 600 feet.
