Integrity/Dedication

The Result: What happened

When I was initially hired I was hired on a seasonal basis so after Christmas they began cutting employees who were no longer needed, I was sure this would be me because although I'd worked hard I knew my sales weren't at the top. When my boss called me she told me that I was an excellent employee whose efforts were definitely noticed and they decided that they were going to keep me on if I chose to accept. I did accept and worked there for about another 6 months before moving here to New York. Although I never was a top salesperson I still tried my hardest and definitely improved those skills at least somewhat and in the process I learned to do other retail related jobs. When I left my boss told me I was the best visual display employee she'd had in a while and if our store would have had a specific position for someone to do that job (as many retail stores do) she would have offered it to me.

The Situation: What I facedNot in all positions I've had have I been completely satisfied with the position I was in or the way things were going, My first official job in retail I realized fairly early on that I wasn't so sure I was cut out for sales and I started to get nervous about how this would reflect on my job performance.

The Action: What I did I believe like what I heard from my interviews that I'm an extremely dedicated person and as long as I hold a position I will hold it with integrity and do the best job I can do and do my best to represent whoever I'm employed by in the best way possible. In this situation I did just that and stayed with it. Of course I could have found another position but I really wanted to give myself a chance to prove to myself I could succeed as well as showing my employer that I was willing to give it a chance even if it wasn't exactly what I was used to.

Reflections

Comment on any surprises

First I must say that unfortunately I was unable to get interviews with anyone I've worked with or for because I am from North Carolina and couldn't get a hold of these people and I haven't really been in school here long enough to have any professors who know me well enough and I just got a new job so it'll be awhile before those bosses or co workers get to know me. Honestly though I think my friends and family members are more honest if anything on these kinds of things. While a boss might tell me if I'm doing something wrong I've always noticed they tend to do it in a way that's not very aggressive. The people closest to me are normally the most honest with things that are not so great skills so I thought it'd be good to get their responses on my good skills. After I've been working at my new job for a while though it'll be good to get feedback from those people as well about my skills or lack of.

What did you learn about yourself?

I was actually surprised at a lot of the stuff I heard. The organization was really the only skill I could have guessed I'd get. I'm fairly notorious for my ridiculous need to be organized. All the other things mentioned however I was really surprised to hear and very flattered. I never expected to hear things like what was pointed out and was very reassured that these are in fact qualities I possess.
