Audience Survey Analysis

There are more female responses than male, this means for my magazine I will have to focus on interviewing more women than men, find out what they are interested in in a magazine and use their input to create a magazine that mostly appeals to them. There were only marginally more women, so it would be unnecessary for me to attempt to aim my magazine at a certain gender.

Most of the respondents were aged between 13 and 17. This is a good result because I wanted my magazine to be aimed at the younger generation. This means that when doing my interviews I’ll interview people of that age range to find out what they would like in a magazine.

Rock was the most heavily favoured genre. However, it is my aim to create a magazine that includes various popular music genres. Many people also enjoy pop, indie and electronic. I would like to include all these genres in my magazine to appeal to a wider audience. 0% of people asked liked jazz, folk or rap, so it would be wise for me to not include these genres in my magazine.

Many people enjoy Kerrang magazine, so it would be wise for me to closely analyse Kerrangs magazine layout, audience and general style. NME is also popular so again, studying various aspects of this magazine would help me greatly in producing my own. Q was also relatively popular, which is good because that happens to be my preferred magazine and would have been my key inspiration.

Over 65% of people would like to be given CDs as promotional items. Music vouchers were also a popular choice, and posters also proved to be popular. This means I will include these promotional items in my magazine, however it could be an idea to rotate which item I put in which issue. For example, I could do CDs one issue, and then the next do a series of music vouchers. It could revolve around the content or band/artist featured in the magazine.

The most popular response was ‘rarely’ , and the second most popular response was ‘never’. This means I will have to be very creative and try to create an interesting and unique magazine that will make people want to buy it regularly. I also need to take into account The fact that once a month, and once a fortnight is popular. I need to do some more research to find out which one of these would be more suitable.

Weekly and fortnightly were equally popular, with four responses each. Bi-monthly was not very popular, with only one response. The most popular response is for music magazines to be published once a month. This response was clearly the most popular so I think it would be wise for me to publish my magazine once a month.

Most people valued blue and black as appropriate colours for an Indie music magazine. Red, green, white and yellow were also popular . Pink and purple weren’t very popular, and orange got no responses. The most popular colours were darker colours, also white and green were popular. From this I can see that most colours would be suitable for the magazine, some more than others. But, I also know that I should definitely not use orange.

Most people are keen to pay up to £2 for a music magazine, 4 people were willing to pay up to £3 and 4 people were even willing to pay over £3. I think as the majority said up to £2, it would be wise to price my magazine between £1.50 and £2.
