Massive Open Online Course (MOOC)

Definition:A massive open online course (MOOC) is an online course aimed at unlimited participation and open access via the web. In addition to traditional course materials such as filmed lectures, readings, and problem sets, many MOOCs provide interactive user forums to support community interactions among students, professors, and teaching assistants.

Pakistan PerspectiveIndigenous MOOC’s in Pakistan• Besides availability of International MOOC’s access in Pakistan to audience who

have access to required ICT Infrastructure, A number of initiatives have been taken locally in Pakistan in this area. Some Sample initiatives are listed below

Free video lectures for Pakistani school and college students ( various grades and subjects) available online or via DVDs.

Many Khan Academy Videos with Urdu Translation. Videos but not LMS is localized in Urdu.

3 LEJ Knowledge Hub -Lej4learning.com.pk

Under supervision of Dr Ata ur Rahman, a project by LEJ National Science Information Center (ICCBS) with aim to provide integrated access to thousands of video lectures of full courses from top Universities around the world (MIT, Udacity, Stanford, Open Yale Courses, NPTEL, Khan Academy and Virtual University of Pakistan) at different levels, i.e. school, undergraduate and graduate

Pakistan’s first virtual public University based completely on modern Information and Communication Technologies. Using free-to-air satellite television broadcasts and the Internet, Allows students to follow its rigorous programs regardless of their physical locations.

5 PI Teach Piteach.com

Joint initiative between Pi Pakistan (Pvt) Ltd & LEJ National Science Information Center . Web based access is provided to live streaming as well as recorded videos of lectures for various school grades. Further, content is provided in Urdu as well as regional languages.

6 Rozgar -Rozgar.work

Central MOOC portal by Microsoft Pakistan that provides access to courses from international MOOCs such as ALISON, Udamy, others.

7 E-Learn Punjab -elearn.punjab.gov.pk

Student lectures, Books, Teachers Guides etc of ( various grades and subjects) of Punjab Text Book Board available online or via DVDs.

Scope of work - Overview

Program Name

Reimbursement of 80% of certification cost of selected MOOC specializations. Full Reimbursement +50% Additional rewards for high achievers. (similar to program being pursued by Malaysian Gov.).

Another option is to Pay MOOC Courses( in specialization) Fees in advance for selected candidates as long as they have passed previous course in specializations.

Selection of MOOCs, courses/specializations , candidate selection criteria by Program & Content Governance Committee with representation from Industry/Academia. MOU shall be established with selected MOOCs.
