Evaluation Question 2

How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary

tasks?

For our music video we chose to keep the whole video in black and white conforming with Indie rock conventions and therefore making our video appealing to our genre’s audience. However, we added a colour scheme consisting of four pastel colours; blue, pink, yellow, and orange as shown below to contrast with the black and white and make the video more interesting and active. These four colours are presented mostly in an opaque circle with each colour being placed over a particular band member through editing. This is done so that audience members and particularly fans can associate each band member with their colour and therefore becoming iconic.

The use of the colour scheme is also demonstrated through a ‘split screen’ where each section is a different colour. The colours are also shown placed on top of the lead singer at one point in the usual circle form, however it is the whole colour scheme focused on the lead singer of which each colour changes in time with the music.

Here I have shown the final out come and layout of my digipak. I ensured that the colour scheme was a continuous theme through out my digipak to show a strong link with the music video, I also utilised the coloured circles for each band member in my digipak so that it was recognisable for fans. I also included the black and white effect on the band members and on the front and back cover to ensure that all themes from our video and conventions of indie rock bands were included to relate to our indie rock genre. Other elements of indie rock bands that were utilised include; a photo of the whole band posed in a studio wearing indie clothing, and an object or theme which in our case was an image of a cassette tape and video tape that I took relating to the bands name and giving an indie retro vibe.

I created a tour poster for the band where I continued the black and white image theme and wrote the band title of the poster on a white strip across the poster resembling the front cover of my digipak where the title is written on a strip of masking tape. I chose to have the title written on a clear white strip edited on photoshop as I wanted it to be crisper and easier to read in comparison to my digipak. However, I chose not to continue the colour scheme in my poster as I wanted the poster to remain crisp and clear, and thus challenges the continuity of my products. Furthermore, the use of colours are stereotypically thought of as feminine and as the band poster is used to advertise the band and their up and coming gigs, I wanted the poster to appeal to a wider audience. Finally, I chose one image of the band playing their instruments to make them appear natural and to evoke the viewer to want to see them live.

The band name is made clear in both my poster and my digipak as it is clearly presented on the front of both products. This links to the video as the bands name is in its chosen font presented on the front of the drum kit.

The imagery within all three products stays very similar if not the same creating fluency throughout the products. For example; their use of costume in each product conforms with the indie rock genre as researched and creates their star image. In each product checked shirts, dark colours, white t-shirts, and denim are utilised forming a casual scruffy look and therefor in keeping with the continuity. The band is portrayed as more natural however in the image of the band with their instruments as they are not staged and simply performing. Where as in the image used in my digipak they have been told to stand in that particular position and are posing for the camera.

I included the record label for ‘Domino’ on the back cover of my digipak to make the whole product finalised and official. Domino is an independent record label which suited the bands genre perfectly as most indie rock bands are signed to independent record labels. Domino is also a well known label for other indie and rock bands and therefore may be recognised by fans of other similar bands.

Although all images for each product are different, for example, my digipak photos were taken in a studio where the band were posing and the poster image was taken during filming, there are strong references to each other as key aspects of the music video such as the use of black and white and the colour scheme have been utilised in my products.
