ALICE Springs Eagles willhave to wait another 12months for a chance to winthe Calder Shield after suf-fering back-to-back de-feats in Darwin over theweekend.

Eagles captain SeanHuddle said his side lackedthe match fitness aftersuccumbing to Top EndBuffaloes and DarwinSharks in consecutivedays.

‘‘It’s the same old story, they are in season and weare out of season,’’ Huddlesaid.

The Eagles bowled wellon day one against theBuffaloes, restricting themto 8/258 from 50 overs.

But Alice Springs washumbled with the batting, dismissed for 130.

‘‘We lost our first sevenwickets for virtually noth-ing,’’ Huddle said.

Huddle said one positivewas the form of the nextgeneration.

‘‘Ned (Gaynor) battedwell on the first day andJayden Dick made a goodscore on day two,’’ he said.

‘‘Those guys are the fu-ture and will play CalderShield for the next decade.

Huddle was also particul-arly impressed withPROBuild Rovers speed-ster Daniel Clarke.

‘ ‘ C l a r k e y w a s t h equickest bowler out therebut he needs to get hisbody right,’’ Huddle said.

Huddle said the Eagleswould be more competitiveif the tri-series was playedafter the local season.

THE unexpected whitewash byRovers Scope of Federal TrustyGlass, their grand final rivals forthe past six seasons, raises thequestion of who will be thechallenger for the Club EastsideAlice Springs Netball Associ-ation A-grade title.

Rovers won 68-33 with bothshooters Michelle Ellis andAimee Rodda netting 34 goals tooutscore their opposition.

It was a complete annihilationafter half-time when Roversscored 38 goals to eight.

Injuries to Tabatha Savilleand Nat Collins, who both had toleave the court during the thirdquarter, did not help Federals’cause.

Federal led 13-12 at quartertime but Rovers hit back fromthe start of the second term tolead 30-25 at the major break.

The third term was almostperfect shooting by Rodda andEllis as they scored 21 goals from22 shots — and the shot Ellismissed, she rebounded andscored.

It was a complete game fromRovers with Tracey Meekingsoutstanding in defence.

Little could be said of theFederal performance althoughJo Sheridan shot 19 goals at 82.6per cent before being moved.

Federal coach played Savilleand Savanah Tiller, in her firstA-grade game, and brought backKassy Chong from the reserves.

Tiller won a couple of big

rebounds against Meekings andRovers keeper Kylie Briggs andbrought a cheer from the crowdwhen she scored her first goal inA-grade.

Rovers made 80 per cent oftheir shots while Federal netteda 55 per cent return.

But the real sign of Rovers’dominance was the 26 moreshots created for the shooters.

Versatile Cindy Drover proveda key player in the gritty 42-35win by Lasseters Seasonsagainst Wests Gillen Club.

Seasons were leading 25-21when shooter Mai Segi, who hadscored 18 of the goals, was forcedto leave the court.

Drover in goal attack scoredeight goals and pulled off theplay of the day, dashing alongthe baseline to retrieve a looseball and flick it back to EllenSchembri who passed back toDrover to shoot a long goal.

Wests coach Naomi Preecesearched for a combination tocounter Seasons including mov-ing Kathleen Carlile to centrefor the final term when bothsides scored 12 goals with Mich-elle Hall and Dani Wenske in thecircle for Wests and converting71 per cent while Seasons 12goals came at 63 per cent.

The win enabled Seasons toregain second place from Fed-eral with four rounds to play.

Both have byes in the final tworounds — but Seasons still has agame against Rovers. Nextweek’s game between Seasonsand Federal will determinewhich side finishes second.
