Shield sadness CRICKET Dale Fletcher ALICE Springs Eagles will have to wait another 12 months for a chance to win the Calder Shield after suf- fering back-to-back de- feats in Darwin over the weekend. Eagles captain Sean Huddle said his side lacked the match fitness after succumbing to Top End Buffaloes and Darwin Sharks in consecutive days. ‘‘It’s the same old story, they are in season and we are out of season,’’ Huddle said. The Eagles bowled well on day one against the Buffaloes, restricting them to 8/258 from 50 overs. Rovers in power play NETBALL Steve Menzies Federal Trusty Glass defender Carlie Ryan battles with Rovers Scope’s Kelsey Rodda. Picture: CHARLIE LOWSON THE unexpected whitewash by Rovers Scope of Federal Trusty Glass, their grand final rivals for the past six seasons, raises the question of who will be the challenger for the Club Eastside Alice Springs Netball Associ- ation A-grade title. Rovers won 68-33 with both shooters Michelle Ellis and Aimee Rodda netting 34 goals to outscore their opposition. It was a complete annihilation after half-time when Rovers scored 38 goals to eight. Injuries to Tabatha Saville and Nat Collins, who both had to leave the court during the third quarter, did not help Federals’ cause. Federal led 13-12 at quarter time but Rovers hit back from the start of the second term to lead 30-25 at the major break. The third term was almost perfect shooting by Rodda and Ellis as they scored 21 goals from 22 shots — and the shot Ellis missed, she rebounded and scored. It was a complete game from Rovers with Tracey Meekings outstanding in defence. Little could be said of the Federal performance although Jo Sheridan shot 19 goals at 82.6 per cent before being moved. Federal coach played Saville and Savanah Tiller, in her first A-grade game, and brought back Kassy Chong from the reserves. Tiller won a couple of big rebounds against Meekings and Rovers keeper Kylie Briggs and brought a cheer from the crowd when she scored her first goal in A-grade. Rovers made 80 per cent of their shots while Federal netted a 55 per cent return. But the real sign of Rovers’ dominance was the 26 more shots created for the shooters. Versatile Cindy Drover proved a key player in the gritty 42-35 win by Lasseters Seasons against Wests Gillen Club. Seasons were leading 25-21 when shooter Mai Segi, who had scored 18 of the goals, was forced to leave the court. Drover in goal attack scored eight goals and pulled off the play of the day, dashing along the baseline to retrieve a loose ball and flick it back to Ellen Schembri who passed back to Drover to shoot a long goal. Wests coach Naomi Preece searched for a combination to counter Seasons including mov- ing Kathleen Carlile to centre for the final term when both sides scored 12 goals with Mich- elle Hall and Dani Wenske in the circle for Wests and converting 71 per cent while Seasons 12 goals came at 63 per cent. The win enabled Seasons to regain second place from Fed- eral with four rounds to play. Both have byes in the final two rounds — but Seasons still has a game against Rovers. Next week’s game between Seasons and Federal will determine which side finishes second.
